The outtakes you provide at the end of your tutorials are just precious. "I'll wait." 😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣
This is a little random, but wanted to let you know anyway. I work in a stressful, sometimes toxic environment, and respond to the toxicity with anxiety and hyper-vigilance.
Your voice is so soothing, and your workspace so clear and restful, that when I'm feeling triggered, I will flip on one of your videos and immediately start to decompress. So, thank you.
Thanks so much. I'm glad it helps.
oh I soooo agree
Hi 'OTOH' so glad you find Louises videos helpful, hope you stay to watch tne fun bloopers at the very end. I also used to work in a toxic environment with the Western Australian govt, in tears because of the constant verbal abuse until I ended up on stress leave (and I wasnt young, was married with kids) and Im so sorry to hear you are (or were) in a similar situation....cant you leave, find a other job, get a transfer???? Glad Louise can add lightness to your day, have a good one and try and smile through your day. Cheers from Western Australia 🦘🦘🦘⚘⚘⚘
It was worth the wait for the kiss (see outtakes at the end 😂) Enjoyed this demonstration. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you Elizabeth.
The only thing that would make your channel any better ....MORE!
I was already a subscriber, but recently bought pencils and googled a tutorial....mind blown. thank you!!
I only draw graphite portraits, period. That's my one and only art subject and medium. When I tell my son that I discovered a superb watercolor teacher on You Tube and that I'm going to start painting birds, I think he won't believe me :-D That's how inspiring your are! Thanks again
Thank you very much Corinne. That's how I started all those years ago - in graphite. Colour scared me back then when I was in my teens and twenties. I told myself I couldn't paint. I didn't know what I was missing. 💕
Wow so many cool birds!!! My neighborhood is surrounded by woods and I have bird feeders along with bird houses. I've only lived here for a year (South Carolina, USA) and moved here from central Florida.
The birds here aren't as exotic of course as where you live but I get mostly song birds which I love. Since last Spring I have seen Cardinals, Wrens, (lots of wrens), Pine Warblers, Titmouse, Chickadee, Morning Dove, Goldfinch, Indigo Bunting, Grackles, lots of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds and only once I saw a Downy Woodpecker. For several months I have had a pair of Bluebirds nesting in one of the birdhouses. The female can't make up her mind which house she wants to stay in. She goes back and forth between two of my birdhouses. I love them all though and am always happy to see them.
You are lucky to have all those exotic, gorgeous birds in your area.
Gorgeous as always. Bloopers at the end made me laugh! So cute.
So glad! Thank you Kris.
Regular colored pencils (ones that are not water soluble) also make a great combination with watercolor. Dried watercolor paint makes a GREAT base for them. The dried paint is a little bit grippy and takes to the pencil perfectly. So if anyone wants to use their pencils like she did in this video (NOT activating with water) and you have regular colored pencils and not watercolor pencils, that's totally fine. No need to buy watercolor pencils if you only plan on using them dry.
Thanks for the tip Stephen!
One of the finest works I`ve seen yet; there are always surprises!
Ah Louise you are such fun 🤭, your gentle voice and pretty smile make you easy to listen to, and your tips are so helpful. I love how you can laugh at yourself, thanks for another great video 🐘🐘🐘 cheers from WA 💜😊
Loved the bloopers at the end!
That bird is so cute. I just love how you do your feathers. I'm going to practice so I can surprise my husband with an Eagle.
Here are some tips on watercolor pencils I've picked up here and there. If you use a stiffer brush it will reduce the watercolor pencil line weight. I use my Golden Taklon or synthetic sable brushes. The Royal Langnickle Gold Taklon or Princeton Velvet Touch Collection works well. Problem is layering because those brushes will scrape off bottom layers. For me, the best way to use watercolor pencils is in a certain layering process.
First a layer of staining watercolors. Second layer, watercolor pencils activated with water.
Third or final touches of watercolor pencils not activated with water.
Or like you mentioned in my travel art journal. Love drawing or sketching watercolor artwork with them. One more thing, you can get some cool calligraphy effects by writing the letters then using the waterbrush to fade out the color. Mostly, use them for fine details, shadows and sometimes under drawings.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful painting.
Laughed my head off at the end! Thanks for another great video. You probably already know this but in case you don’t…Caran d’Ache make a small rough palette specifically for removing pigment from the pencils and blending.
Great demonstration. Fun to watch the outtakes!
Stunning. So pretty. Like the two mediums.
I love your work.your voice is very gentle.
Wow 😍😍😍Amazing
Thank you Archana.
Love the end of the video 😆💐
Watercolor pencils are the best if you're travelling or painting outdoors 👍 I prefer tubes but pencils are lightweight and convenient... I hate dried up pans that get cross contaminated. This painting was superb Louise 👌 You are so skilled... I asked Liron to do a review of you in his "masters" series 👍😁 thanks so much for sharing 🙏
Love your bloopers too!
So beautiful. What an eye you have.
Always waiting for the weekend for your tutorial movies 🤩
Hope you enjoyed it! Thank you Havva.
Lol “he’s still working from home”. ... 😂. Louise this painting OMG! How beautiful. I always hear of using colored pencils over watercolor and I have so many. Thanks for showing how you do this.
This made my day! The end was as good as the tutorial!
Thank you!
Enjoyed your painting techniques on this lovely bird. I have subscribed!
Aaahhhh Louise, you are very funny! I’m totally enjoying your videos and out takes. I love the beautiful birds on your property... and most of all, your paintings!
Hi from Sydney Louise..Loving watching your tutorials & also your out-takes are so funny..glad you included them too! I have many journals & try to paint or sketch something small most days using water brush with Faber-Castel watercolour pencils I've had for years. I also have many beautiful birds that visit my plot & never knew about galah's eye colour. Your painting is fabulous!
Stunning!
You are mesmerizing to watch! I learn a lot from your shares and I am a Patreon of yours!
Thanks so much Katherine. 💕
I have a collection of watercolor pencils and regular watercolor paint.I just love the way watercolors work and and a spontaneous way of painting.Your work is beautiful Louise and thank you for sharing this.❤😀😊👍🐦
Thank you Louise for this tutoriel. I think using watercolor tube is magic to see color diffuses and, for me, with watercolor pencil there’s no magic ☹️. I will continue painting with pigment from the tubes. It was useful to know. Greetings from Montréal, Canada 😘🌈
I feel the same Ginette. I won't rush to use them again. Thank you!
Just discovered you Louise
Fabulous thank you!!
Such a gorgeous painting! I am acrylic artist but am dabbling in water colour. I am really struggling with watercolour, but love water colour pencils as I have more control!
Your paintings art so delicate as compare to Steve Cronin two very different techniques. Both very good. But your is like rain falling in water. Very smooth
Louise, having watched this video with your watercolor pencils has sent me right to Amazon to buy some! Thank you for another lovely painting and your soothing voice here in the US after an American holiday without being able to get together with my family.
Beautiful!
Is the first video I watch from you and it was an instant subscription you are so talented and explain so we'll, and for what I see you are super sweet, will run to do some watercolor after this
Thanks for the shots of your gorgeous backyard birds. Love watching you paint. I’ve been practicing your feather technique. What a beautiful painting! Your outtakes always make me smile but this group was my favorite.
Beautiful job, as always! To use watercolor pencil on a palette, I would advise against doing so on paper. It's wasteful, and who knows what sizing rubs off the paper and gets in the paint. Instead, you can use a piece of white plastic which you can rough up with sandpaper for grip. Also, to activate the rubbed pigments on the palette, I use a 100:1 mixture of gum arabic in distilled water. This makes the pencil pigments more compatible with my regular watercolors. I keep this magic potion in a 100 ml dropper bottle; makes mixing a cinch.
This was very helpful. I will try this technique for birds in the future. I think the control will be helpful especially for tail and flight feathers as I always blur them and can't quite get the lines straight.
You are a natural watercolour artist and it seems to be that you know what to do by instinct. It's in your soul and a part of you, and it's lovely to watch. It's such a gift and thank you for sharing it. I sit and watch in awe :)
Absolutamente inspirador. Gracias por compartir tus conocimientos y tus obras. Desde Chile south América thanks
Your Galah is beautiful and you did a great job using the pencils. I bought a set of 60 Faber -Castell Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils and tried them, didn't like them that much and never use them. Added to the collection of other numerous art supplies I have bought and never use 😂 I prefer regular watercolours so much more. Thank you for the great video and wonderful bloopers:)
Beautiful work, thank you.
I think many of the manufacturers tell you to keep the pencils themselves dry because of issues with damage to the leads.
Also, Derwent Inktense are actually quite resistant to rewetting. I was surprised when I tried it and it interfered with attempts to reactivate areas that had dried. It can be quite useful though, once you get used to it, because it allows layering.
I am getting quite fond of these pencils, but am a bit disappointed that there may be problems with lightfastness in some colours.
You're a "BIT" of a bird watcher??! Oh, my goodness, you are the world's BEST bird watcher, and thank goodness you are! We are all benefiting from it! I am doing your tulip right now highlighting with my Derwent watercolor pencils, so I'm delighted with this RUclips; we watercolor pencil people LOVE Derwent :) Thanks SO MUCH for this one!!!!!
You're the best! Thank you Vickie. 💕
Beautiful painting! And loved the bloopers like everyone else !!
Thank you very much! 💕
I love your painting Louise! I think another way to use watercolor pencil would be preparing a mix of water and some of the pigment from the pencil that you can obtain from sharpening it.
Hi there Louise I hope you're keeping well. Another beautiful painting, thank you for sharing with us. 🎨 I have a tip regarding watercolour pencils - take a plastic palette and lightly sand the wells, then you can rub the pencils in the well depositing some pigment, add a few drops of water and hey presto you have paint. I hope you find this useful 😊 Stay safe and stay creative xXx
I have watercolor pencils but have never really used them because I didn’t know how best to use them! This video was excellent Louise as I never thought of using the activated pencil on paper as paint! Brilliant! Your bloopers are always the icing on the cake and the kiss from Dom was the BEST!!
Thank you for a wonderful demonstration! The painting is lovely!
I despair of ever being able to paint as you do! I will keep trying and watching your amazing videos though. Thank you for the instruction. Xx
You can do it! Thank you Lexi. 💕
Tip: You can do that paper palette trick on a plastic palette if you rough it up first with sandpaper. It would probably work without roughing it. Saves paper. Thanks.
Thank you Catherine!
Thank you. As an oil and a micron artist, I am just now trying to do a row of galahs on a wire fence as my first watercolour, using the Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils. I learnt a great deal from this.
I love this cute video!!!❤
Thank you so much for showing your techniques with wc pencils. Personally I use them very much in the same way like you on details. As I love outdoor sketching sometimes I use them to make paper palets. That way I can carry along several different colors/palets with my minimum equipment in a pocket (little sketchbook with paper palets, pencil, waterbrush).
Lovely video - happy painting!!!
Thanks for sharing Taunus!
I love watching you paint you are a great artist.
Oh, Louise. I so enjoyed that demonstration! Your techniques and expertise are a joy to behold but I really loved the ending when we see an entirely different side. Can't wait for more videos. Thank you.
Love the out takes at the end .. as well as the fabulous tips and techniques! Thanks for the big giggles.. you are adorable! and so fun!
You are great!!
Brilliant demo and beautiful painting! So enjoy all your videos Louise (including the laughs at the end) :-) Thank you! x
Thank you so much for sharing your awesome talent and totally engaging personality 🥰. Your videos are my new obsession. I took a class with Wisconsin watercolor artist Karlyn Holman . We learned to use watercolor pencils as a way to add texture to our paintings by rubbing the pigment against a piece of sandpaper above the still damp paper. This allows the pigment to fall and spread organically thereby creating additional interest and texture.
Very clever! Thank you so much for the tip Marushka. 💕
Haha loved the bloopers. I have watercolour pencils and didn’t know what to do with them but used in a small way would work for me. BTW Hugh Jackman’s family were in the background of an interview he did recently and it was so nice to see them, glad you kept hubby’s kiss in!
Wow. Those watercolor pencils really come in handy. Especially the lighter valued colors (like that light granite rose/pink) for highlights that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. The pencils make them so easy and convenient. I just got the 60-color set of Faber Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils and they're amazing quality.
Loved the whole video but especially the end!! So cute to see the real you! Added some additional fun to a great instructional! Thanks for leaving that part in...your hubby’s kiss and coffee-making antics was priceless!
Enjoyed your video on watercolor pencils, and I really liked the colorful birds you have on your property in Australia ! Thank You!
Thank you Thomas!
Another gorgeous painting and great video. To save paper,I sometimes scrape the end of the pencil with a sharp knife over a palette. The fine shavings then can be hydrated with water.
Thanks for another great lesson and I love how you show us your bloopers ❤️❤️🤦♀️
wonderful colour blending and result with wc pencils. I shave a bit of paint end of the pencil onto a regular pallet and activate the pigment on the pallet so you can even blend colour pencil colours. You know, if you needed to add Windsor violet to them :):)
Try Winsor and Newton watercolor pencil they are awesome!
Your hubby's kids and hug was SO sweet.
I recently watched Arteza's You Tube video regarding how to use their watercolor pencils. They didn't mention the issue with leaving a mark on the paper that will remain visible. I found that helpful because I've often wondered why they aren't used as a medium to render your drawing as you would water soluble graphite so it's not visible in the final piece. Your method of using the the color on a paper as a palette was also helpful.
I also wanted to pass on another You Tube channel called Falconry and Me that I find fascinating. She recently hatched some owl chicks. I believe they're now 5/15/20 3 weeks old. If you go back to the beginning of the eggs being laid she explains why she hatches the eggs for the mom. Amy has a wealth of knowledge on many predatory birds. She has a raven that is fascinating as well.
hello Louise, I have those pencil brands also, you did say Caran d,ache properly...sometimes I use the Prismacolor VERITHIN they give a lovely thin line if you want to outline or add details...my favourite are Faber Castell, the WC Pencils are beautiful but the Verithin are not WC pencils....enjoying your helpful tips you give! Thank you for your hard work and sharing....regards Robyn theres not too much detail Louise, I think for feathers you need to show details....you need to put the "better coffee machine " downstairs! :)
What a wonderful demo!! I have been thinking about adding watercolor pencils to my art supply collection, so I came to RUclips to see what I could find out about using them. Your video sold me! I love the way you use them to enhance your watercolors.
Thank you for another wonderful video! The close up and slow patient way you negative paint your bird feathers is very educational a mesmerizing! The best I've seen on the net.
FYI: Two watercolor artists you may enjoy on RUclips utilize colored pencils and watercolor pencils in various ways. 1. In the Studio with Michele. 2. The Frugal Crafter.
Thank you so much for the outtakes at the end. It’s Fun to see. Made me laugh out loud. Thanks again
P.S. I meant to say Faber-Castell Albrecht-Durer in my last comment as the watercolor pencil of choice these days for most artists I see on RUclips (but I personally love Dewent Inktense, so vibrant), and I just looked in my stash and I have 081 of the Supracolor, so I'm doing a Happy Dance in my pajamas, weeeee! Sure hope this tutorial winds up on Patreon Real Soon! ;)
Wow this is simply beautful. It was quite lovely using the negative effect :)
I love your work. You have provided me with so much helpful information. Thank you, sincerely thank you. PS, love the out takes.
lovely lovely lovely! beautiful as always...great pace so we can follow... thank you for the lessons... Louise you are lucky to have 25 acres... and the birds... paradise...where exactly in Australia? I live in Melbourne...
Thank you for your sharing tips. Love your Galah. You are adorable and charming. I do enjoy your videos and smile along with your behind the scenes.
Thank you so much!
Louise you are incredible !! Love all your paintings. I am going to give it a shot thanks to you. I also love the "bloopers" as we call them here in the states at the end of your videos !! Thank you so much for sharing your techniques.
Louise! You’re my favorite!! ❤️❤️❤️ I just love your tutorials for so many reasons. And your outtakes are just one more reason for me to fall in lo cc’d e with you. You and your husband! 😂 So cute. ❤️
Enjoyed this demonstration. Thank you.
Love this video. Thank you so much. Such a beautiful bird the galah! I also love the peaks of some other native birds you have there. The black cockatoo was beautiful.
I loved the bloopers!! Keep those coming! Also, the white pencil in the Museum Aquarelle line is crazy opaque. Love that pencil!~
Thanks so much Lisa!
You’re SO awesome. Your art and your personality. Thank you 🙏
Your outtakes are hilarious!
Thanks Denise. 💕
Thank you for another beautiful painting!
I get very frustrated with watercolour pencils, not as much as pastels but it’s a close second!
As you can probably guess I’ve been experimenting with different mediums but am loving watercolours and your tutorials are so lovely and inspiring that they are encouraging me to keep trying!
So a huge thank you from the other side of the world !!! Laura xx 🏴 🤣🌸🌸🌸
Such a beautiful bird AND another beautiful tutorial from you! I enjoy these SO much. It is very overcast here today in northwest Arkansas in the states and this really helped brighten my day!
My pleasure and thank you Cherie. 😊
Love your work and your voice is precious. That little bird was beautufully done and thank you for all the tips for using w pencils. I've had some Caran d'ache for years and never got on with them. Now they have a new meaning.😘
I don’t know if you’ve ever used prismacolor colored pencils but, I’ve learned recently you can use the white pencil like the way you used the white watercolor pencil for the little white flicks of feathers. They are more opaque than the white watercolor pencil. Also you can use the white prismacolor premier pencil as a resist for watercolor. I really don’t know if it has to say premier but, mine does and I know it works. You probably know all this but just in case you didn’t maybe it will be useful? Have a great day!
Debbie
Amazing . I never think the painting will be this way...I love it
Enjoy the journey, and cherish yourself as an artist each step of the way. Your painting will improve with each painting you do, and you'll naturally get better. But the art you do today is a reflection of who you are and what you know right now, and it has value for that reason. I have work I did years ago that disappointed me at that time, but I look at it now and like it. You're probably better than you realize. :)
Thank you so much Nada.😀
it is stunning thank you. you make me feel like I can actually learn this. mycouple of attempts so far have been very frustrating but you give me hope
Wow! This is so beautiful. You live in a lovely environment... Thanks for sharing 🌹🌹🌹
This was wonderful! I just purchased some watercolor pencils and tried them. Much the same as you. Then I found ur video! Using them lightly for detail shading, I had not tried yet.
Lindsey the Furgal Crafter, she uses sanded paper because it picks up the colored lead then activates it w/ water. She said its much like working with oils. Thanks for ur videos they r so helpful! :)
This is absolutely brilliant and so timely!
Glad it was helpful. Thank you Tom.
Thank you.
Regars from Argentina !
This is a gorgeous painting! I will keep following your lessons and hope to one day be able to create such a wondrously rich and vibrant masterpiece! Thanks for sharing your amazing skills!
I cannot wait to try this. I was given a set of Prisma Colour pencils and didn't care for those little lines, either. Thank you for the tips☺
