  • Episode 5 of ‘Beat The Expert’ Antiques valuations quiz with David Harper & David Elstob.
We’re going to show you three genuine antique items before they go into auction.
You’ll get to hear the auction estimate, a description of each piece and then you’ll watch them sell in auction.
The question is can you beat the expert? Can you get closer to the final hammer price than the auctioneer David Elstob?
Anyone can play along, go with your gut feeling, go with your instincts and let me know how well you did!
In this episode, we look at a 19th century bronze, a pair of early 20th century ships wine bottle holders from The White Star Line and a Robert Thompson (Mouse Man) oak coffee table…good luck!
David Elstob is owner of auctioneers Elstob & Elstob in Ripon, North Yorkshire…Get in touch with David : www.elstobande...

Well, we sandwiched the Bronze selling price with guesses of 3500 & £1000. My partner was spot on with the wine coolers @ £850, but we both over-cooked the mouseman table with guesses of £700 & £800. Great fun though! Thank you.

The bronze I thought would be worth 1200 or 1500. The wine coolers about 800 to 1000. The mouse man 1000.

Mr. Bronzy is brilliant, fine looking subject, beautifully detailed, (shame about the wee Willy😬). Nevertheless, I feel the valuation is low, and predict $1250, as a punt speculation that the artist might one day be discovered. The wine coolers, the most unique I have seen, and in love with the copper and deco style. I predict 750 each (1500 pair). But wouldn’t be surprised if they had gone for as much as a grand a piece. Robert Thomson pieces are so widely collectible, I love the tool marks on his works. What a great investment-predict 950 pounds. Thank you for choosing such an eclectic array of goodies David. Cheers! Shae

Mouse man goes well on east coast, catching up on west coast. But still, coffee tables are slow. So US, maybe $500 to $600. See ya

Mr. Harper: Thank you for filling in the dry gaps of British antique hunting shows while the BBC prepares the next round of Bargain Hunt and/or Antiques Road Trip. Two off the cuff questions to you sir...
If you were a contestant on Bargain Hunt, who would you choose to be your playing partner, and who would your "expert" be if you could choose?
In a similar question: who did you enjoy competing against the most on these antique shows, and/or who was the most difficult to compete against?

Cheers Bill. I’d be with Gyles Brandreth because he’s hilarious and knows a lot about everything! Expert would be Charles Hanson. The three of us would have a great laugh. Expert not to compete against would be James Lewis…he does anything to win!

Auctioneer really had to work. I was thinking sell for $800, but that's dollars. Would have made more in New York city.

I was thinking more like 1200 USD for that bronze. It's a beauty and it went cheap - bet it cost the equivalent back in the day just to cast it. Those wine coolers ... White Star line ship? Price just went up. Never seen a pair before either. With any justice the estimate would have been low, but it wasn't . I'm betting someone got a pleasant surprise. ] That Mouseman table. Eek! (badump) We don't see them here, but we're having no luck with any sort of brown wood. No surprise alas that it only made its estimate instead of doubling it.

Watch out for the next one on Friday. A piece of brown furniture that might surprise!

Sorry David, these wine coolers won't do as well in US. Here, for the perfect buyer, maybe, $150 for both. Style here, sleek and shinny, deco, mid century modern, best.
