Briggs and Stratton motor bicycle

- Here I've attached a bullet-proof 2hp 4 cycle (no oil/gas mix necessary) briggs motor (under 49cc) and I'm still able to pedal with all gears. In my state I can ride this with a drivers license but no registration is required. Top legal speed is 30 mph. This was a test vehicle to see if I could have my bicycle camper in tow. Unfortunately the 24" rim/big pulley I attached to the rear wheel was not successful in gearing it down enough for steep hills. My motor is old and you still have to assist it going up steep hills, but it's a fun ride. I'm able to pop the belt off the idler wheel when pedaling for any distance which reduces a lot of unnecessary drag.
As someone who has followed this highly respected channel for many years, I've come to expect the unexpected! But up until now... I was never worried about Paul joining a motorcycle club! /Great Video
Thanks Bob, and thank you for being a follower. I checked out your orchard video on your channel. Beautiful! Next time I travel to Vermont I'll for sure cross the border and say hello!
The things this man builds still amaze me. I’ve always had the idea of using a B&S motor on a bike, but never thought of his idea for a drivetrain.
You come up with some of the best ideas 👍
The belt drive system is simple and ingenious, I learned a lot and hope to make something similar someday. Thank you sir!
Imagine this with your bicycle camper. You'll be able to go across country with that.
Rocky mountains may pose a problem

You had me laughing at the speed of you flying by! Looks like awesome fun!!!
Paul.. you come up with the best of em😆
you had me at the zip ties. I mean seriously though. You inspired me slap a rim on my spokes with little screws and 1/4" plywood backer. so far it handles 3HP NO PROBLEM. Hopefully those hills will continue calling you to make it multi-speed.
That’s pretty slick! Had a similar setup (GEBE kit I bought) many years ago and loved the thrill I got from riding it. Good times.
Not been able to ride any bike this last year due to health.
Anyone riding one of these be sure to have fun safely!
You’re sure to thrash yourself wrecking at 30mph... I lost a good pair of jeans this way.
"due to health." Your health will improve if you get back out there!

Hey Paul. Nice build! I've seen bikes with motors before, but this is kind of cool. Now that's the true DIY way to build something! Have a Super Christmas / New Year and all the best for 2022.
One of the better conversions I have seen!
Nice build! Really like that you still have your gears.
Nice I like it thanks for sharing Paul. Looks like fun.
A simple video that get everything done. Great job.
I know you're just doing this to use stuff laying around but how about an electric conversion?
45 yrs ago built one. With a chainsaw went about 45 MPH you could see the tire grow like on WORLDS FASTEST INDIAN. WOW that was scary fast. I was 14 or 15 and had access to build da shit. RACER RICK
0:09 What a nice looking wheel.
0:10 Oh, dear, spoke too soon.
I know! but the bike, although almost new, was a freebee, and I needed two 24" rims to pull this off.
@@paulwelkinsdiy It looked pretty awesome in motion. Good job.
What’s the top speed reached? 30mph? That’s pretty damn fast for a bicycle!
It felt fast enough.
That looks like a quick and easy project compared to your other ones. Hows the mileage? Add a fairing on the front and try to realize your high mileage vehicle dream with this platform. Plus, its a hybrid! haha.
That's pretty epic. Cheers, Paul! ✌️
Brillante.Epico! Great genius! Admiro su trabajo! Tambien tengo los mios.Triciclos a pedal y carritos para bicicleta. Desde Montevideo .Uruguay.saludos
He never disappoints
Great straight forward and potentially cheap as heck project. I would like to see you build a bike camper that pushes the bike. The motor weight could be kept low in its own little housing and just driving one wheel.
Outlaw motorized biker
💥👊😎💥
In Wisconsin that’s called a Dewey (DUI) cruiser
Nice build
Thats pretty frickin cool Paul.
Nice
What size shaft is your engine? I have the exact same one but I’m not there to check
That’s cool bro there a lot of fun I build motorized bikes on my channel but different kind great build
Hey, that looked like FUN!
hey, that's how I get off a bike! xD
Your a nut! Keep it up!
Wait, no coroplast? 🤓
Ikr lol
Very cool Paul! How's the handling with all that weight behind the rear axle? I added 10 lbs of battery and controller to a rear rack of my franken-ebike and it made it pretty unstable. But, once I got used to it (like flying a helicopter or an airplane with a severely aft CG condition) and got on to using the instability to aid in cornering it's sort of a fun.
Wow, I did one very similar, I used a friction drive, engine turned backwards, worked well, 30 + mph😎
Was it a briggs motor? If so that would make the bike less top heavy, even with the extra weight on one side that might be a benefit.
@@paulwelkinsdiy 2hp, briggs, legal as a moped, 1972 vintage, took it and the bearings from it,no clutch ,just ran a cable to lift the friction wheel off of the tire😁
That was fun to watch.
been building motorized bikes(electric, & gas) for almost 15 years now 👍💨
Post some videos for us to admire? :D
Did you ever see my other briggs bike? (link at the end of this video). On that I was able to use all 7 gears with the motor, but was unable to pedal and the gearing was still quite high. My ideal version would be the briggs mounted in the frame with full suspension and use of the pedals but still have the engine powering the 7 gear cassette for low gearing enabling a bike camper to be in tow. Any thoughts?
i dont get why you cut the spokes though??? In all your videos you are all about reusing and doing things that prevent excessive waste, but here you just cut the spokes instead of taking them apart. that is very wasteful....
As I get older, I value the time I have left on this planet, so sacrificing a few odd length spokes was no big deal in the grand scheme of things.
Epic and with engine to assist in breaking 😆
Neat project! Could you not just turn the tensioner arrangement into a Jack shaft/tensioner with two pulleys and then Have a short belt to a larger pulley on the jackshaft and a second belt on the smaller Jack shaft pulley to the large wheel mounted pulley thus adding further reduction. Pulleys could be turned from aluminium in the same way you filed your roller wheel
I always liked most of Paul’s projects.👍
Here is some of my art.
I drew some high mileage / EV Trike concept vehicles.
Coming soon to my channel Tron bikes and Tron tanks and other sci-fi vehicles vehicles and some robots.
Nice drawing!
great stuff.
Love it!
I've done something similar but with a weed eater engine and a friction drive
two things: One- this is awesome! and two, I wonder if you can put a brand new 99 dollar harbor freight engine on this without too much rekagiggery?
I might give that a try. I'm also thinking maybe a smaller 4 cycle motor to keep the top heaviness and weight down.
Connect it to one of your bike campers and you'll have a high mileage, cross country camper!
That was my intent, but the gearing is still too high. A 20" rear wheel and a smaller centrifugal clutch pulley may help, but probably will still not be enough for steep hills with a camper in tow.
This reminds me of one of mustie1’s builds.
But he stretched the frame to fit the motor between the frame
👍
Brilliant, but would need a type approval test, road tax, insurance and mot in the UK.
OI YA GAT A LOICENCSE FOR THAT MATE! What a terrible country.
Consider doing an e-bike for your next project.
3:45 You need to put the motor more low...or ha a lighter one like a solex (50cc 2Stroque) ruclips.net/video/Di-rhNNHkg0/видео.html
I checked out the video. I'm not too keen on friction drive 2 cycle motors. That was the first one I bought back in 1979. Although light, they chew up tires and slip when it rains.
@@paulwelkinsdiy that's right, but some crazy guy's make already some races with's louder modified solex ruclips.net/video/toTqMVPzvSo/видео.html
With some different gearing you could definitely hit that 50 mph
crazy 👍👍😎👍👍
Can it climb ?
Mantap 👍
Jos tenan bro
kabel ties is bodging
better use disc breaks
Is that 2hp?
Yeah
i no someome ride a maw motor had a nasty accident he couldnt stop it
*JOS TENAN*
Don't try to ride with the motor up there
I have built a motorized Schwinn.
Biggest issues are..
1. the rims are not rated for the speeds you will achieve. They will fold.
2. Stock Brakes are not good enough.
Wear a helmet and know that your bike is too heavy to enjoy.
Let's go Brandon
Indeed, let us go.... Brandon.
😂
Inveterate tinkerer....
Damn dude, that's so dangerous. Not to mention you're polluting far more and using far more petrol than if you just bought a car. Hell, the amount of pollution out of that you could probably buy a light truck and beat it's emissions. But the whole zip tied together drive train is horrifying. D: You're braver than I am riding that!
go lie down green soyboi! dude's way more a man than u'll ever be
What are you on about
Dude are u smoking meth a bike with a moter uses maybe a gallon of gas over 100mpg how is that more pollution then a car ?
Really? Any proof to back up your claim?
I mean Briggs and Stratton is very poluting (if that is even a word) because of all the oil they burn, but damn it still ain't anywhere near as much pollution as a car
