Amazing Lawn Mower Motorized Bike (Part 2/2)

  • Well boys and gals we finished the lawn mower motorized bike. This motorbike functions using an angle drive to convert the vertical rotation of the lawn Mower engine into a horizontal output to drive the rear wheel. I took it off road and despite needing a new tail-bone it functioned very nicely, not quite a dirt bike but oh well. Anyway If you like this project be sure to check out the channel for more motorized bikes, dirt bikes, go karts, gas scooters, motorcycles, quads, atv's and a crap ton of other stuff!

Nice!! Find a way to add a heavyer flywheel and it will solve your stall/torque issue. In the lawnmower, the blade acts as a flywheel gathering inertia overcoming stall.

I appreciate your all your hard work and effort and engineering skills great job!
Back in 1968 I built my first motorbike with a horizontal shaft 4 horsepower engine . I used 12 inches of angle iron and 2 u bolts to bolt to the frame. Centrifical belt clutch and one wizard rear pulley on a 26in wheel.
No welder, no cutting the bicycle frame ,no high-tech tools just me in the 6th grade building a motorbike that went about 35 to 40 miles an hour.
Sometimes a simpler design is less complicated and less breakdowns.

Yes! A plasma cutter table, & a tubing bender, plus a nicely laid out tool & compressor area, pure genious, money well spent. I loved the nice, clean gusset assembly under the engine. 2 suggestions, go back to the bigger belt driven pulley & find a carb with an idle adjustment you can open up to richen the transition from idle to midrange. That single speed carb just cannot handle the transition, it is simply to lean. Hack on a little carb from GoPowrrSports, like a mikuni clone. Get their suggestions. That very shaft has much fiber manners in it's future! Again, welcome back Sir 😎. Your quality of work has greatly improved & you're still entertaining, congrats!

Your mower engine has an aluminum flywheel due to the blade being the centrifugal force for three of the four strokes. You need a cast iron flywheel from a horizontal shaft motor or make a weight to attach to the crank to take the place of the cast iron.

Lawnmowers have a blade that is mounted directly to their PTO this means they can be made with lighter flywheels. If you changed the flywheel out from one off of a pressure washer that was weighted it would probably function better.

Oliver I love your stuff, but when I saw part 1 of this video I expected you'd have problems due to mower engines having MUCH lighter flywheels (mower blade provides the inertia)
Looks like you do have a bit of a problem with getting rolling when you first let in the clutch (in the video where you say "not enough torque")
Might be able to get an iron flywheel from a vertical shaft Briggs pressure washer or similar.

    • @OliverMotorized
      @OliverMotorized  4 года назад +4

You are right! The lack of a flywheel means there is less momentum to help sustain engine rotation while depressing the clutch. Hmm... maybe I'll rob one off a Briggs like you said.

On a vertical shaft engine designed for a lawn mower, the spinning blade acts as a flywheel so without it, there is little to no inertia built up untill the engine is at higher revs so this is why the bike keeps stalling when the belt is initially engaged.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, the vert Briggs has an aluminum lightweight flywheel that doesn’t do well without the weight of a rotating mower blade. This is likely contributing to the stalling. The iron flywheel from literally any 2hp to 4hp horizontal Briggs will fit right in without any changes and will solve much of your issues. Keep doing what you’re doing!

Get a 3.5 hp briggs horizonal shaft flywheel from an yard edger or just order a new one, you'll find it's way much heavier than the one on lawnmower 3.5s. That's all it is. Great job man.

Be advised that your vertical shaft engine probably has no ball bearings... you could add a 6205 bearing or similar to the mounting flange if you want to :)
Also the clutch setup is not ideal for a single cylinder engine. In case you want to improve the take-off behavior, you need to increase flywheel mass. So the engine doesn't cut out that easily when the clutch is engaged. Greetings and good tinkering.

Hey I don't know if you still have this, but I see you stalled it a lot. Don't be afraid to give the engine all the RPM. There's a video on my channel called "Wall Mounted Lawn Mower Engine" where I generally just rev one of these engines. Mine had the cast iron flywheel is the only change. I revved it many times and it's generally still fine. Well, it was, but I scrapped it because I don't really need a lawn mower engine mounted to my wall

Great to see you back, Oliver! It looks like you are really stepping up to the next level with CAD, plasma table, and the tubing bender. Can you do a video of your shop and all the cool stuff you have in it tool-wise? I am particularly interested in that tubing bender.

Maybe sometime in the future I'll do a shop overview! In the meantime, the tubing bender is a Rogue Fab -- lots of you tubers have done reviews I'm sure a quick search will turn up a bunch lol. Thanks!

Question : Since usually a mower engine uses the blade as a flywheel and without it the engine won't even start, what did you do to fix it ? ...simply the inertia of 90 deg. gearbox is enough ?

  • @AnyMotoUSA
