The significance of C.M. Punk returning to the Royal Rumble would have been a full-circle moment, as his last WWE match was there in 2014. However, returning at Survivor Series, one of the top four PPVs (or PLEs) in WWE, also held in his hometown of Chicago, was a cool move. His mere presence made a huge impact, and it provides a natural build-up to the Royal Rumble and beyond, leading to the Road to WrestleMania.

53:47 Is the problem I have with the current wrestling media. There is no wrestling war, WWE is a multi billion dollar empire that's focusing on their own business, and AEW is struggling to put 4k people in arenas and can't get over a million viewers. The WWE doesn't need to go to war because they already have everything they need.

Bunny, to give you context on that Jack Perry incident, Perry wanted to use real glass for the glass spot in his pre-show match at All In. The use of real glass was considered a no no in the wrestling business because someone could seriously get hurt in that. Real glass is way tougher than the ones commonly used in wrestling. An example would be when Goldberg punched the car window in a segment in WCW back in the day and he ended up with a broken hand because the window was real glass. So, Tony Schiovane, recently promoted as a backstage authority figure told Punk to tell Perry that it'a no on the real glass. And Punk, having been the "leader" of Collision and an elder statesman in AEW went to Perry and told him. Perry was pissed. And that's when reports of Punk nixing Perry's real glass spot came to be after Perry threw a hissy fit over getting rejected. But for some reason, right before All In, Perry got the okay for the real glass spot. Punk didn't complain at all but of course was disappointed. He was in the gorilla position (a place backstage where the booking team is placed and where wrestlers with who are scheduled to come out next wait) because he and Joe were the opening match for All In after the pre show, that is when Perry tapped the real glass and looked at the camera and uttered "Real Glass. Cry me a river." which was a direct shot at Punk. Punk, already frustrated, coz days prior to the show, he was set to have a meeting with Tony Khan, The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega back in the US to try and hash things out but then they cancelled on Punk at the last minute. Then, upon arriving in London, his ride to the arena got mixed up. He had to travel through train and had to ask the locals who were wrestling fans for direction. So after the match, there were some instigations that ensued between Punk and Perry at gorilla and that is were the altercation happened. Hope this helps, Bunny!

I remember hearing about Goldberg injuring his hand on a real glass window. I remember hearing the glass sliced tendons in his hand or forearm and that he almost lost his arm.

“Real glass” is not a “no-no” in the wrestling business. There’s tempered and untempered glass which both are used in pro wrestling. (Sugar glass is used too but that’s a different thing and very noticeable) Tempered glass is used often in like deathmatches or certain spots. It breaks into bits and is generally safe but will cut. Untempered glass breaks into bigger shards and is more unsafe but I think it’s rarely. Untempered glass is harder to break to my knowledge and the shards break into bigger pieces and is wayyy more dangerous. Windshield spots don’t use either glass to my knowledge they use a different type that’s also quite safe. I’m not sure about car window spots but I imagine they’re gimmicked or don’t use the same glass as they did in the 90s. The Perry/Hook spot was extremely safe and it’s probably the spot they had planned and I believe they were given the okay for the original spot until the day of when Punk and possibly a few others said no.

      @Mr_Leo_DS 10 месяцев назад

That's not the story I heard at all. What I heard is that Jack Perry wanted to use real glass in a Collision spot, got the okay from the higher ups, but Punk, being the head figure of Collision, vetoed it. But then he got the okay to use it at All In and said what he said

@Mr_Leo_DS what was really said will never come out fully, and we kind of have to go off of what little has been allowed to get said. What I find interesting is two days prior to me making this comment Kenny Omega publicly aligned himself with Punk on the Punk vs Perry/Khan situation, even saying he would like to have a match with Punk in the future following his own return to wrestling.

Wrestlers have always used spots from past matches. Fans just never noticed until people on the internet stared cutting up side by side videos.
The thing is... the internet freaks out and calls em "tribute matches" ... but the thing that they seem to gloss over is that the spots are effective at conveying the emotion of the moment... and all the fans watching in the moment were super into it. Then a couple days later a couple nerds have to prove how smart they are by digging into archives just to find a reason to trash something other people enjoyed.

It was a brilliant move by WWE, something not mentioned is like him or not, ratings don’t lie, and every episode of Collision before he got released, and after, the ratings are down between 250,000-500,000 people the shows he’s not advertised for, that’s 250-500k fans who now turned back to WWE, and being one of them, most of us refuse to watch AEW after they did Punk dirty like that.

So, in WWE there are four big Ppv's (or PLE's I think they are called now), which are as historic as they are epic, Royal Rumble, Survivor Series, Summer Slam and Wrestlemania, the later being the biggest one, originally designed to appeal to the mainstream. The Royal Rumble is considered the official start of the "road to Wrestlemania" the perfect place for surprise returns given the fact that most of the 30 entries in it are surprises. This has been used before for veterans to make one off returns or injured wrestlers make their awaited comebacks, the most iconics being John cena 2008 or Edge in 2020, so everybody is always hype to see who makes their appearance in that show, it's like a Marvel movie where multiple cameos are promised. However Chicago crowds always gave Punk's best reactions so it was a way better choice to make his return there.
Also! pretty good video but a couple of things that I think he failed to mention. In All in London, Punk was left at the airport because his vehicle didn't pick him up, Aew was in charge of that, so he had to take public transport to get there in an unknown place relying on people's directions, there are very funny pictures of fans with him on the train or subway, I dont know how them Brits call it. And second, the glass incident, it wasn't because Punk didn't want him to use glass, it was because higher ups didn't want Jungle boy to use it but he wasn't listening so they asked Punk to tell him, cause Chick Magnet Punk was considered a Locker room leader (by some obviosuly, the rest hated him) and then Jungle Boy said on camera "real glass, cry me a river" which proceded in their backstage confrontation which was funny considering after that Punk's match started, so in his entrance you see Punk with his "I just beat someone" face. As for Hangman Page, he was already infamous for saying he didn't listened to veterans advice because they (The Elite) founded the place and they know what they are doing. So yeah, can't blame the guy for acting like he did even though he wasn't the most mature about it.

OH! Bunny! While I'm thinking of it.... (I just paused at the 20:00 mark, while holding back some comments from the last 8 minutes or so)...... Jim Cornette, and Bruce Prichard (both of whom use "static" images for their RUclips videos) have EXCELLENT points of view on a lot of wrestling topics. Both have been employed by WWE, and other wrestling promotors. Cornette used to be a manager/booker/participant in his younger years, and TRULY understands the business, and its history. Prichard was mostly involved with WWF/WWE, but has also worked elsewhere. Those two are people you SHOULD really pay attention to. Vince Russo, from what I know, worked for both WWF/WWE and WCW prior to it being purchased by WWF/WWE, but completely failed to understand the business as it was at the time.
I'm going to finish watching this video (which is really good, BTW), before I actually post this comment... in case there's something else to point out. But I did want to point you towards both Jim Cornette's channel, and Bruce Prichard's channel.... and dammit, I just remembered Eric Bischoff's channel, 83 Weeks, which is another great source for wrestling information from the "Attitude Era", and into the 2000s. Bischoff originally worked for WCW in the 1990s, but would (because Hell started serving "Soft Serve Ice Cream") end up working for the WWE starting in the early 2000s. It's THAT whole thing, (the guy who worked for WCW and tried to put WWF out of business in the 1990s) is why I highly recommended the "Reliving the War" series from Wrestling Bios to you.
That series is currently into early 1999, which means it's going to be finished within the next few months. But we're talking about a series that is closing in on 200 episodes that cover each week's shows from both Monday Night Raw (WWF) and Monday Nitro (WCW), as they went "Head to Head" every week on television.
26:40 - THAT, my dear, was "real life" bleeding into AEW's Media Scrum (post event chit-chat). Punk was LIVID over what happened, and he had a live microphone in front of him.... and he just "cut loose", as you can tell by the look on Tony Khan's face.
29:35 - Girl, you're spitting facts here, despite being "new" to the fandom! The reason WWE lost a lot of viewers after WCW and ECW folded and were bought out, was because of the "lack of legit competition". TNA never got close to being a legit "alternative" to WWE, and as much as I like Ring of Honor, they were "regional" at best (though a valid place to grow your name and hone your skills). But neither were even close to being a competitor to WWE.
31:40 - No, you're stone correct in that you wouldn't see that kind of thing with McMahon. Vince would take control of the situation, and likely fire you on the spot if you even attempted it. The thing is, Vince is no longer in control of WWE.... but Triple H is pretty much calling the shots now, and "the boys" won't do that kind of thing publicly, because Hunter was (!!) one of them at one point. So they respect him, and would do that kind of thing "behind closed doors" out of respect.
38:05 - Bunny, Please take this as the compliment it is intended to be: You do not look even CLOSE enough to "old enough" to be a high school teacher. I get what you're saying, though.... "Authority" is usually based around either Respect, or Dictatorship. While it IS possible to be "friendly" with those you're in charge of.... it's very easy to lost the respect required to maintain your position. You seem like a big sweetheart, and I really don't think you've got enough "asshole" in you for such a position. Because you have to sometimes be a "meanie" (to use your word) in order to maintain authority.
43:25 - To be honest, given what I know about WHY Punk left WWE in the first place...... yes. Because they (likely) put into the contract with him, a correction to why he left in the first place. One of them being a Main Event spot in WrestleMania (which, honestly, he DID deserve).... he was snubbed during his "modern day" record breaking title run in favor of "Part Timers", while he was performing injured and in lots of pain, every week. So that was a valid grief of his. Not to mention, at the time, he was the HOTTEST star in the company.... only to be snubbed for the Main Event spot..... by John Cena and The Rock.
50:00 - I'm not saying that Punk is always right, but dammit, he always makes valid points.

Tributes are a staple. Almost every big match is a tribute to some match from the past. In the 90s it was tributes to the 70s, the 2000s were a mix of old lucca and Japanese wrestling from some and the NWA of old from others. Today we are getting 80s tributes and early 90s tributes constantly. Like music ots hard ro be original so a quote I've always taken ro heart, "it's not stealing if its inspiration and you make it your own, and everyone borrows from other artists in some way."

With CM Punk, I think you have to be willing to willing to put yourself in his shoes to understand where he's coming from. I feel like he loves the business and respects it, and after a set amount of time he came back and was hungry. He really wanted to get back to what he loved doing. He wanted to help the next generation, make great stories and make some money along the way and prove to the WWE and himself that he was a Star. I feel like when he left WWE, he felt like they weren't treating him like the top star that many of us believed him to be (whether or not this is true, there's definitely behind the scenes talks about how they didn't see him or treat him that way) and with injuries and multiple issues he burned out completely. (I've been there and had a nervous break down at a job before, at some point somethings going to give if you're not happy).
You can do things that you love and have companies burn you out on it, which I think is what happened in WWE, to the point Punk could only see the bad, and needed that break. After he came back it started to happen in AEW. I think many of the founding people in AEW, were put into positions of power, which was great when it was starting out. But as time grew, those in power shouldn't be on the active roster as there will always be a conflict of interest. Many of those people (The Elite and such) had the attitude that they knew better than everyone else, they'd gotten to this point doing things their way so they didn't need to listen to anyone's advice (Not only Punk, other veterans that were there have gone on record saying the same). Which, granted they made it popular, they have a following, there's no denying that. Having said that, we should all always be trying to learn and grow, you could still listen to advice and not follow it and make up your own mind. However, they always seemed to have the attitude they didn't even need to listen to anyone. Even when Punk seemed to be willing to talk it out after the locker room scuffle, they refused to have conversations with him. Instead, they just ignored him then taunted him from the sidelines or rubbed it in his face on TV acting rather unprofessional and childish (in my opinion). Punk is the type of person who sticks to his code, and he doesn't have to put up with crap that most other people would have to do in those situations. He's also not afraid to say things out loud that most of the time someone really should be saying, but in the real world we sugarcoat it and lie so as not to cause any waves.
I worked for a popular video game company many years ago, and for as much as I loved it, when corporations took over, they made the job miserable. You're trying so hard to do something you love and people around you are crapping all over it, taking short cuts, not wanting to put out quality and only caring about what they want to do. Most often the people in charge shouldn't be, as they aren't passionate about the product, they just happened to be in a position of power and they they abuse it trying to make a quick buck. Many of us feel trapped in those jobs, and they're difficult to leave when it's your livelihood and something you love. Punk is the type who stands up against what he thinks is wrong (whether he actually is or not is another story), but he has his own strong convictions and code which he sticks to. If you haven't been in a position where you could tell your superiors what you really think in a job, I feel like you're lucky beyond belief and can't really understand Punk's point of view.
With the locker room incident, If I'm in a room and 3-4 people who essentially break in yelling, and I feel like a fright is going to happen and I'm outnumbered, I'm not going to fault a guy for throwing the first punch when, adding in the fact there were non wresters (and pets) in the room whose safety is a concern. I feel like when you're being bullied day after day after day by (as Punk would put it) children who don't want to listen, at some point somethings going to give. We all have our breaking points, and if you can't relate, again you're lucky or just haven't had enough life experience yet as in the real world. Could he have handled things in a better way in many cases? Sure. He could have handled it differently I'm sure, but I think he's smart enough to know, they weren't going to stop and nothing was going to change given the positions many of those people were in.
I really hope that WWE just communicates with him, as I like to believe he's at a point where he's willing to talk or listen and find middle ground. I want to believe he's looking to do what he loves again while he still can and make it amazing for everyone. I think the people in charge at WWE have enough respect form the locker room that people will do things right, and they're willing to listen. In AEW the people that didn't have respect for others were in charge, or the one person at the top was trying too busy trying to not disrupt any friendships instead of doing what needed to be done in a lot of cases. I hope as a result he'll be with WWE for a while and that he can bring some amazing stories back to WWE and entertain the hell out of us once again.

Bunny, I had heard the rumours for WEEKS leading up to Punk's debut in AEW. I won't lie, though.... I've seen this kind of thing before, and it's always a "cautiously optimistic" point of view with me. Yes, I do want it.... but I also realize that it just might NOT happen (had it happen WAY too many times in the past). But yes, I was watching when Punk's music hit.... and I can honestly tell you that the home audience literally could NOT hear the music very well over the roar of that crowd. It was insane, and I loved every second of it! But looking back now, it's a shame that AEW blew that opportunity with him.
I realize that what I'm about to say is a Bray Wyatt phrase.... but... "He had the WHOLE WORLD.... IN HIS HANDS!" at that point in time. But as we all know, things don't always go to plan.

Yeah, this was why I said a while back that I had mixed feelings about Punk returning to WWE so soon after his AEW firing. It feels like a big gamble to me, IMO. But hey, if Triple H is confident he can make it work, then more power to him. And yeah, I won't deny that Tony Khan's lack of leadership skills are one of his biggest flaws.... that and the fact that AEW is nowhere near as focused on story as WWE. Hopefully, the Punk drama will force him to grow as a boss, but time will tell....
BTW, I still very much recommend checking out some AEW stuff. Lots of awesome talent among its roster, even when you don't count ex-WWE performers (Darby Allin, Orange Cassidy, the aforementioned Eddie Kingston, etc.). If you're still interested in Punk's time there, then it doesn't get any better than his feud with MJF. Here's a great video that chronicles it, called "Better Than You": ruclips.net/video/7CbZQpmacJI/видео.htmlsi=dlylw5QdjtugHn_E

I think CM Punk has temper and he is a very smart guy. He has history drama but 9 out of 10 he has been made the 100% bad guy when it's more many people added to that drama. But WWE Vince and HHH both are strong leaders, at AEW Tony is a too nice of guy leader, I think CM Punk fits more with the Vince-less WWE era now. I don't think he'd fair returning to TNA or New Japan. He is CM Punk business 1st and that isn't a bad thing, AEW has great stars old and new if they had more guides that were not the young bucks and kenny they whisper to much in Tony's ear. They need a strong ring leader to work with Talent. End of the day wrestling is a crazy business. Been watching WWE since 88 when I was 6, but became loyal after my heroes Undertaker, Mankind, Kane unearthed themselves to scare the WWE. And I enjoy your channel. Have a nice day.

Punk caused a rift in the AEW community and locker-room between more oldschool minded + WWE style minded fans/wrestlers and the modern independent scene fans/wrestlers who hold very little respect for veterans in the business. People like Jungle Boy and Adam Page openly said that they don't take advice from veterans, and that really pissed people like Punk off. Since he has the more old-school mentality where you have to respect your seniors. Both Punk and the Elite would use their influence in their company and have things done their way.

What I heard is that multiple people told Jack perry not to do it, he wasn't listening then they went to punk and asked punk to tell him. at one point the narrator in this video describes "all his fireable offenses".
at the point in time that he's talking about when he says that, cm punk's only singularly fireable offense was the fight after All Out, where it was inconclusive who was the aggressor (though it's more likely that Punk and Steel were the aggressors-still, the Bucks & Kenny went there to give him trouble). I don't think the upfront no-show was exactly fireable.
i feel like the **large amount** of talk about a few things w/ Punk tricks people into thinking there's a **large amount** of problems.
there were 2 altercations in AEW, 1 of which came after he was trolled by Hangman for months, without management (3 of them being the wrestlers doing the trolling) throwing him a bone. AEW (which i prefer to WWE) has a really cliquey high school vibe backstage, it seems.
Punk is famous for being temperamental, and for taking things very personally. when AEW signed him, anyone with a brain thought, "All they have to do is not mess with him IRL, and they'll make money forever." but for some reason the Elite had to keep messing with him.
then even when the first brawl happened, after AEW decided to stay with Punk, they didn't have the professional mindset to use what happened to make more money. i love AEW but they do have an immature vibe, the Bucks especially. i think they felt threatened or they panicked when Punk's presence shined a light on Hangman not being the giant star they thought he was? Hangman just felt uncomfortably tense about Punk, and the Bucks played into that.
literally Punk didn't do anything crazy until the media scrum, which was in response to being trolled by his bosses/colleagues. then, after those guys kicked his door down and possibly hurt but definitely scared his dog, he punched them. you can't punch people, but there are far more uncalled-for reasons to punch someone.
the 2nd altercation w/ Jungle Boy, again coming after being trolled by a colleague, is significantly different and yes, you gotta fire him there.
anyway, Punk is being talked about like he's been burning everyone around him for his whole career, and it mostly only comes from Elite fans about this one feud. they don't even care about the Jungle Boy fight.
but yeah, you can't approach someone and then get physical like that.

CM Punk is not the first polarizing person to come back to WWE.
Hulk Hogan in 1993... as the WWF HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION... said that IWGP Heavyweight Championship (Hogan is... kinda the first person to win that title in 1983 when that title was first instituted) was the most prestigious title in the world while he was in Japan (IWGP stands for International Wrestling Grand Prix and it's a predecessor to G1 Climax tournament held by New Japan Pro Wrestling). Hogan left WWF the same year to appear in WCW to be the biggest rival of WWF. And he came back. And he also overcome the racial scandal... and many other things.
The Ultimate Warrior, a person, who held WWF for money he thought WWF owed him for his work and was a very controversial person... he came back to be included in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2014 only to pass away 3 days after the Hall of Fame ceremony and just 1 day after his last TV appearance.
Cody Rhodes... who left WWE in 2016 while he wasn't happy with his position in the company and the fact that WWE didn't want him to reach a certain level of popularity by keeping him as a Stardust persona... he even once destroyed a symbolic throne (that is portraying Triple H's King of Kings persona) at AEW show... he came back.
Bruno Sammartino (who has the longest title reign as a WWE Champion at 2803 days and the longest combined time as WWE Champion at 4040 days) didn't want to deal with WWE for many years after he left the company in 1988 and he was against what Vince McMahon was doing with wrestling business and he was against WWF/WWE allowing wrestlers to use steroids. He became a WWE Hall of Famer in 2013 when he finally realized that WWE has changed their position on many aspects that Bruno was very critical about and worked with the company until his death in 2018.
WWE is a business and they can bring back people who left on bad terms.

@@Bunnymon and that's not even the full list. There're some other names who were considered done with WWE only to return to WWE. Like "Macho Man" Randy Savage... who officially never returned, as he tragically died before he could return, but he was doing ad companies for action figures of him that were made by Mattel that worked with WWE. Randy and Vince McMahon had a very strained relationship. Vince thought that Randy's best days as a wrestler were long gone and wanted him to work as commentator, but Randy thought otherwise and left WWF as soon as his contract ended and WCW gained him a good contract. And then Randy Savage became enemies with Hulk Hogan (that's why he was so hesitant to work in TNA in 2004 as there were rumors that Hulk will work for TNA at that time) and even had a rap album "Be a Man" that had a diss track against Hogan.
And also Randy Savage was a face of Slim Jim ad company for many years, when Randy left WWF and went to WCW, Slim Jim started to work with WCW and that pissed Vince McMahon a lot, as he needed money (WWF in mid 90s were far from a juggernaut that they become since late 90s and money were an issue as they couldn't have people on bigger contracts that WCW were earn to give WWF wrestlers). Randy was posthumously inducted in WWE Hall of Fame in 2015 and his brother Lanny Poffo (who worked in WWF as "Genius" and passed away this February) took the award for Randy.
PS. Randy Savage in WCW was known for nepotism. He had his brother Lanny on WCW contract even if Lanny never appeared on TV and his father Angelo Poffo was inducted into WCW Hall of Fame even if Angelo wasn't as legendary as some other names in WCW Hall of Fame like Wahoo McDaniel, Dusty Rhodes, Terry Funk, Verne Gagne or Harley Race among the others).

You won't see that leadership dynamic with McMahon for two reasons. 1 Vince didn't put up with anything. 2 HHH is fully in charge of creative now and Vince is completely banned from everyday operations.

This video is so pro elite and anti punk, it’s hilarious. So much detail was left out and it was one sided. I wonder if this dude making the video is payed by AEW lol
