I’m so nervous. The MCU should have really strict castings. From the two actors from previous movies being in Last Dance. To now this.

This just seems like the worst desperation on Marvel's part. Casting Downey as some Doom variant is the worst casting decision I've ever heard.

Unless he never takes the mask off, so we never see it's him! Hardly anyone wants to do a "David Prowse." Darth Vader was once one of the greatest movie villains. But what recognition did the actor playing him get? Anthony Daniels made a lot more appearances in interviews than he ever did.

@@daarionaharis664 I mean that's not really an explanation of why it's illogical. You just don't like the idea of Doom not being a different actor, which I can understand, but in a world of multiverse nonsense, it makes sense.
Lotta red flags for me on this one:
• I think it kinda sucks that Doom seems more like their panic button after Majors’ scandal, means we get no proper build up for him.
• It reeks of desperation. Coming out swinging with “Look guys, it’s Dr. Doom! Played by RDJ! Directed by the Russos!” makes them look like they’re trying to jangle keys in front of an audience.
• The fact that he’s going to be played by RDJ makes me worried we’ll get another Ultron where they take a serious and morose villain and make him evil Tony Stark, and also makes me feel like he’s going to constantly take his mask off.
• Being introduced in the same Avengers movie where he’s the main villain, as well as the Fantastic Four being from another universe, strongly implies we won’t get a properly developed Reed/Doom dynamic and history.
There's a lot of good things here, but I think kind of the opposite on the last one. He's the Doom of the F4 universe, as opposed to "our" Doom happening to look like Stark, and will probably have pre-existing beef with Reed given that Feige and the Russos all confirmed the F4 will be major parts of both Avengers films.
With them announcing him now yes obviously they needed an annoncment of doctor doom with the new title but with f4 filming soon they could drop if he's from their universe they could drop him in there as a cameo and then have him in a couple post credits scenes in the movies beforehand

I agree with all of that except the point of bringing the Russos being a red flag move. Yes, it's definitely a desperate move, but it's the right move. They NEED the Russos. They struggle without them. They're a huge reason the Infinity Saga reached the greatness it did.
You're right, Grace. It makes absolutely no sense to cast Robert Downey Jr as Dr. Doom if he's supposed to be a different character to Tony Stark, and not a variant.

They kinda set it up with Deadpool though, they SPOILER had Chris Evans and set him up to be Captain America only to have him as Johnny Storm.

If the MCU had not fallen into questionable quality post-Endgame, this reveal would have been insane. It's a feat to turn a beloved hero into a despised villain. Disney/Marvel could have had something special with this. But because the MCU seems to be spiraling, this feels like a desperate way to win fans back.

If Doom is just a Stark variant, that is such a sad waste of Doctor Doom. Doom deserves his own phase, and Victor deserves to be the menace he is.
I think he is playing Doom and he won't take off the mask. RDJ will make him totally different to Stark.

@@fvallesThat makes no sense. You can't do Civil War without the Cap vs. Iron Man conflict. And it wasn't him who decided to do Civil War. It was Fiege when he heard DC was doing Batman vs. Superman and he quickly repurposed Cap 3 to adapt Civil War.

Seems like a REALLY bad idea. RDJ is perfect as Iron Man and he had his story told. Doom needs to really be separated from any other character and be iconic in his own right. They should have really gone with Cillian Murphy. Get someone who is highly respected as an actor and make the choice really mean something. Doom is a gypsy from Europe which is perfect for Cillian since he played in Peaky Blinders for so long.
RDJ already had his mark and so did the other Avengers. This is an act of desperation.

The MCU just feels like a shell of what it was. The original actors took the roles because they were interested in the characters. But watching that Fantastic Four panel just convinced me all those actors took the job for the paycheck. And RDJ returning just reeks of desperation. I’m just wondering when fans will run out of leftover good will from the good old days
I would tend to agree, but the fact is none of the F4 cast have ever been the co-lead in a big movie like this. For all of them it's the biggest role of their careers - yes including Pedro Pascal.
What if Robert Downey Jr's Doom were a variant of Howard Stark? That way he could have the personal connection with Reed Richards in his original 1960s setting.

Wolverine wasn't gone for longer
His return was announced in 2022, 5 years after he left in 2017 and the same is the case with RDJ cuz he left 5 years ago with Endgame. Equal breaks for both.
But Hugh came back as Wolverine, RDJ is coming back as Doom!! That's a 180 from him playing Iron Man/Tony Stark, albeit Stark and von Doom do share some similarities. Should have DEFINITELY been new actor. Even Mads Mikkelsen would have made a much better recast option, especially as Doctor Strange was in 2016 (8 years ago!).

I think it makes perfect sense on why he’s the same actor without being a Tony Stark variant. When he fights the Avengers, they won’t know how to feel fighting someone that looks like Tony. It will mess with their minds. He will look like Tony. He will sound like Tony. He just won’t be Tony. But all they will see is Tony.

Great to catch you live, Grace, albeit it's nearly 5am here (London, UK). I still can't believe this casting news 🤯. It HAS to be a Tony Stark variant, but would have much preferred a PROPER Doom casting. This feels very gimmick/sentimental driven. Even if they pivot down the line and decide to do Doom again, this will unequivocally take away from that. Feige 💯% missed a trick in not casting Marcin Dorociński as Victor von Doom.
Regarding feeling the impact of Doom stealing Sue from Reed, X-Men ‘97 gave us Genosha and removed it in the same episode, and it may be the beat episode if the series… so done right Marvel can introduce the FF and give us the feels about losing Sue within two movies.

Too much like “we have no idea how to move forward, so we’ll just hold on to what worked before”. I don’t understand, if you’re gonna take the time to adapt Dr. Doom, bring him into the movies, why not just make him his own character?? Victor Von Doom is such an interesting character on his own, who has interesting relationships with all the characters we’ve previously seen. WHY dilute that by turning Tony Stark into him?? If you weren’t ready for RDJ to leave the MCU, you shouldn’t have killed him off, on top of getting rid of Cap at the same time. I’m starting to question the decision making going on here😒

My guess: RDJ Tony Stark was the only variant that chose the good path. The rest are simply Doom in every multiverse.
I HONESTLY think that Feige/Disney suddenly decided: Oh, nobody cares about our new stories and the „taking the mantle“ characters, but people DO go to the theatre to see Cameo-Apocalypse-movies like Spider-Man3, Deadpool 3 and stuff like that. So we JUST need spectacle and that’s it.
I also think RDJ was in talks for coming back as an AI for a new character that also no one wanted and then they quickly were like: Safest way would be to give u a whole character, Robert, can u please do that?
Also the general audience isn’t craving for „seeing different versions of those characters“, so I don’t know why Feige is counting on this …

2. Know nothing about other RDJr performances.
3. Tony Stark>Iron Man fans.
I think the only way this could work is if we never see his face, which idk if RDJ will agree to that

This feels like the Marvel-pocolypse to me.
I have to say, for better or worse, this is the first time I’ve been even thinking about the MCU after so long. This definitely grabbed attention.

My take is that since people have largely been in superhero fatigue and not selling tickets that bringing back Robert is the best way to get fans excited as he has always been the big popular ticket seller. I'm excited and curious personally. We miss him!❤
