  • In-depth PC game review of Half-Life, a first-person shooter developed by Valve Software and released in 1998 by Sierra Studios. It was Valve's debut product and the first in the Half-Life series. The game's engine, GoldSrc, is a heavily modified version of the Quake engine licensed from id Software.
Players assume the role of Dr. Gordon Freeman, who must fight his way out of a secret research facility after an experiment goes horribly wrong, fighting enemies both human and alien, and solving simple puzzles to traverse the hostile environment.
We look at the expansions by Gearbox Software: Opposing Force and Blue Shift, as well as the PlayStation 2 port. We look at some of its amazing mods created by the Half-Life community. Half-Life is considered to be one of the greatest first-person shooters of all time.
Era Game Reviews is more than just reviews of older PC games from the 90's. The in-depth reviews not only discuss the basics like the graphics and gameplay, but also looked into the game's history, mods, culture and community.

I played this game so much back in the day, but I never even knew there was a stealth system at all. We learn something new every day.

You make amazing reviews, love your style. Been following since your Jetpack review, and will continue to follow as long as you make them :)

You miss how revolutionary Half-Life was on release. The graphics had been surpassed, but no FPS had previously had characters that you could speak with and dynamically advance the plot. Audio logs and translator messages were about as good as it got pre half-life. Post half-life, FPS developers had to create more dynamic and interactive NPCs, especially after Deus Ex.

I'm so glad finally someone addressed the low quality of the PCM audio samples in the game - it's so strange that this game has worse audio quality than many games released before it including Unreal and Blood (on the Build engine!). I wish Valve has dug of the original source files and created a true HD audio pack.

Awesome review, please keep the old school reviews coming. I was a big fan of your Quake retrospective

That game is great, my favorites of the 90s FPS, including Blood 1/2, Doom, Unreal, Duke Nukem 3D, and so much more. I also enjoy the 2 Blood games, as well as Unreal. In fact, i have completed Unreal yesterday!

I have completed Blood 2: The Chosen today! It was a good game, but the original is still the best game.

Great videos, very in depth. I grew up playing these games so these nineties shooter reviews are very nostalgic.

It's funny when half life source looks almost like the original (I can hardly see the differences) and then community made Black Mesa it's such an improvement.

It looks almost the same because it's just a port to another engine. Nothing was changed besides that.

seems like a lot of this praise should be given to Unreal for doing that stuff first

Oh yes Unreal did it before.
But system shock did a lot of things before almost any FPS
I personally prefer SiN over half life, but HL have some qualities in its combat, and the somewhat tactical approach made it stand out.
I preferred Unreal with its skill based combat, but most people tend to went away from the more classical quake combat, towards a more stand still combat.

I don't know why you rail so much on the graphics aspect.
The game looks fine for something that's based on such old code.
I'd say that despite the blurry textures the environments still manage to convey a sense of depth because how lighting is set up.
Something that's kinda lacking in a lot of modern games

@ 10:30 - I always wondered why Half Life sound effects are low quality compared to Thief which was released around the same time.

Too bad he stopped the series because he did some interesting stuff with these reviews.
And one thing I like is the fact he goes deep on the gameplay aspect of the games he's reviewing.
Also mentioning the modding scene of each game is quite a plus IMO because modding is something that very few people is aware of...

I just disagree with you on the Hornet gun part where you said that you need to use it more often because of the ammo available. That is completely nonsense. Ammo is never a problem in this game, not even in Xen. Maybe you aren't being as accurate as you should be.

Yeah i mean there's ammo canisters in every xen level.

Great review on the ol' Lambda.
Personally I think that SiN despite it's troubled launch back in the day make for a much more fun game in my opinion than HL.
It has more character for once, and it feels like the Duke Nukem Forever we never got.

Half Life games had good story & great environments. First game had ok gunplay but the sequel's gunplay was laughable. Playing as a doctor that shoots aliens is a quite dumb concept. That's why I liked the two add-ons later released better.
Opposing force was the best one & Blue Shift was great too. Short but it told a story from the different character's perspective in the same environment which is something I really liked.
Other than that, replayability is quite medium to low. I guess mods did good job at keeping the game alive throughout the years.
And this formula of no cutscenes & no text to read, many mainstream sites have said that most FPS games followed that. I don't know, I haven't been able to find a FPS to do that besides Half Life sequels & mods.
Environments & ambience were the best parts of these games, especially first one & two expansions.
I'll stick to ID Software's FPS. Those had better gunplay & high replayability.
Oh & there will be no Half Life 3 or Episode 3. The series is dead on the Valve side.

+FubarSFBD Sorry, but that honor goes to Deus Ex. ;~p
I mean, don’t get me wrong: due to Valve’s embrace of modding, Half-Life had a far greater impact on video gaming history than Deus Ex did, but in terms of story, immersion, sheer things to do, etc., Deus Ex *DEFINITELY* comes out on top!
...but it is still cool that Half-Life is one, unbroken experience, though. Deus Ex definitely can’t claim that. ;~D

What the fuck? LithTech is ass and holds up worse than Goldsrc. Have you seen Blood 2 and Shogo? It's just a terrible abuse of colored lighting and poor texture quality. If anything, Half-Life's graphics hold up better than anything else from 1998, including Unreal and SiN.
