  • Located near Taiwan and bordering the South China Sea, the Philippines has found itself surrounded by growing threats from China. For help pushing back on Beijing, officials are racing to strengthen ties with the United States, a mutual defense treaty partner that has its own strategic interests in the region.
On the heels of a major military base deal between Manila and Washington, I traveled to the Philippines to observe Army exercises and learn why the country is becoming more and more important on the world stage.

0:46 Why the Philippines is in the middle of the U.S.-China superpower competition
3:31 Why Pacific powers like Australia and Japan are strengthening ties with Manila

Low chance it becomes anything big, China is probably limit testing how much of a push over PH is.
They wouldn't risk war with a country allied with the US while they're going through their own stuff.
The Philippines is like this 4ft nerd and China is a 5ft jock pushing us around whenever it passes by.
The US is the 6ft basketball team star who just happens to be in the same class but has fun messing with the bully. (Aka, bigger bully)
The US will help us but not because we're precious allies, but because China looks delicious.

We Amercians blame the Philippines for this fiasco. 1st, the USA had 2 largest bases outside the USA in the Philippines, during that time China dared not come close, later China offered the corrupt Aquino government millions of dollars to brake the lease and close the bases, so as a puppet to China the Philippines closed the bases and China now shows their true intent. America was stabbed in the back by the most corrupt country in Asia, we will never forgive nor help the Philippines, you fight your own wars, bring your jet ski's and stop crying to the USA for help. Philippines is a country which you cannot trust they'll turn their backs on you, they gossip so much, one day China will grab more islands and the Philippines cannot do a damn thing. The actions by China are those of enforcing sovereignty over the islands, shoals, reefs, etc., because Philippines keeps trying to take them. China’s enforcement procedures are not aggressive or bullying.
Philippines is really the one that uses aggressive/bullying, hostile and deadly forces against other countries’ fishermen (Taiwan, Vietnam, China) especially back in the 60’s and 70’s, during and after they seized the islands and shoals from ROC/Taiwan. They shoot to kill, did onboard searches, arrested fishermen, seized fishermen’s boats and rammed their boats. However, China has not caused any fatality over the incidents between China and Philippines.
The Philippines, during the 60’s and 70’s, have forcefully seized and occupied 11 islands, shoals, reefs, etc., which included Zhongye Dao/Thitu Island. These were originally under ROC/Taiwan’s administration. They were seized by Philippines from ROC/Taiwan when it was too weak to defend from Philippines and pressure from the US.
China uses blocking, which is less aggressive and less invasive than the methods used by coast guards of Philippines and around the world.

Is it the West Philippine Sea (12 year old name), or do we listen to Vietnam who says it's the East Sea? Or Indonesia's North Natuna Sea? Listen man, I'm a US Soldier, I dearly love the Philippines, I honestly will die to defend the Philippines from any Chinese invasion. I honestly mean that. But renaming a place doesn't mean you own it. And owning a part of it doesn't mean you can rename it either.
South China Sea has been the English name for it HUNDREDS of years before the first country called "China", which was 1912 under the Nationalists (Modern day Taiwan).
No country just gets to rename the sea just because they own part of it and expect the whole world to change their word for it.
Trust me I would fight to defend your right to the South China Sea, but that doesn't mean that I have to change an almost 600 year old world for it that is older than any country called China.

Philippine is the one that uses deadly force on others. It’s the Philippine Coast Guard that had shot to death a Taiwanese fisherman in 2013 in the near Taiping Island which is an island administered by Taiwan. Also, Philippines also stole Taiwan’s Zhongye Dao/Thitu Island during a storm. However, China has not shoot to death anyone over the incidents between China and Philippines. In addition, two Vietnamese fishermen died in 2017 in a tragic incident with the Philippine Navy.
Philippine intent to steal Chinese territories near Second Thomas Shoal and Scarborough Shoal. Philippine vessels have made multiple and continuous intrusions for the last 20 plus years into Chinese territories near Second Thomas Shoal and Scarborough Shoal. Philippine have tried to transport construction material to the illegally shipwrecked Sierra Madre outpost for reinforcement on-site or near it. Philippines had already seized Taiwan’s Zhongye Dao/Thitu Island during a storm.
Each China Coast Guard action is an enforcement operation in response to at least one or more intrusions and violations of China’s territorial sovereignty.
So, China is not the one doing the “threats.”

Philippines’ story of alleged “ramming” or “bullying” is debunked. The Philippine ship, at a faster speed, is cutting recklessly in front of China Coast Guard. The Philippine ship moves at a faster speed and tries to outrun the Coast Guard, and then cuts in front of the Coast Guard. A close shot may show the impact, but the Philippine ship is at fault for cutting in front of China Coast Guard. According to the video, the Philippine ship tries to outrun and cuts in front of China Coast Guard. China Coast Guard did not ram or bully the Philippine ship. Drone video portion of the same incident confirms the analysis even more.

The US & all its allies are bankrupt.
The US has $155 trillion official debt & unfunded obligations but only $5 trillion assets so it is only surviving by borrowing more, trillions per quarter. Very soon it will implode.
Japan gas $9.5 trillion debts with only $3 trillion income. Another basket case, just printing money like the US. They will both implode very soon that's why they're going crazy & want to hide their shame behind proxy wars. The Philippines don't need these basket cases🤣🤣🤣🤣

I wish there was a way for people to self-sustain by their own country as well as be able to trade. very tricky situation. Perhaps if USA was not so dependent on other nations and utilized its own technology and new agriculture, it could do so much for itself and the globe! But the soil here still feels very young and clean and not quite fertile yet, even with an aging planet. If China were not so paranoid about the foreign powers that be (though for maybe some tangible reasons), maybe she could do great too! The Philippines is truly a treasure, however, and it is a great trauma the land needs a breather to heal. In fact, everywhere everywhere need so much healing! Help us!

Yes!! I want that for PI also. I want the US to not only provide military partnership and protection, but also to move more manufacturing and service jobs into the islands. Now that many are leaving or preparing to leave China, I hope that President Bong Bong and his people are doing everything they can to encourage those US companies to move to PI.

You're naive if you think the US has any interest of actually helping the Phillipines, remember your history and how they treat you now. They are manipulating the Phillipines to throw your lives to fight China for them. Idk why you all can't see this. All the while China has been giving Phillipines BRI support.

The BRI has shown again and again to be a failure for both China AND for the countries that China tries to victimize with the BRI.
