    The contrast between Richard in this video, where he speaks Mandarin, and in Barrett’s, where he speaks English, could not be greater. It is very instructive. He seems like a nice guy in Barrett’s video, but he is another person in Chinese: animated, funny, full of vivid descriptions, etc. He obviously can express himself so much more freely in Mandarin, it is really impressive.

    I had a similar situation when I was a child. My dad is Vietnamese-Chinese, my mom is Chinese-Malaysian. I was born in Canada. Growing up, I spoke Cantonese and Vietnamese at home. When I went to Malaysia for a few months to visit my mom's side of the family they all spoke Mandarin. Within a few months, I picked up Mandarin very quickly. When I came back to Canada, I found that I couldn't speak Vietnamese anymore. I can't explain how and why, but it seemed that Mandarin replaced my Vietnamese. I still understand Vietnamese very well, but when I want to speak, I get choked up. I think if I practice speaking Vietnamese more, I will get it back again.

    Access the playback speed controls as follows:
    *Desktop Computers and Laptops:* open the video, then go to the lower right of the video's screen and click on the settings icon (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link "custom". Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time.
    *Smartphones:* open the video and go to the upper right of the video's screen. You will see 3 dots. Click on them and you will see the link to open the "playback speed" controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you greater control over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).

    Always nice guests and always nice vidz..Eileen has the gift to talk to people, to strike the perfect conversational balance. I was 9 or 10 years old when I fell in love with Chinese by reading an article on radicals in my mother tongue, Bulgarian. I still remember the radicals and hanzi : 森林 (sēn lín) 木 (mù), and 川 (chuān). There was a 9-years old me, reading about the Chinese word formation...and the rest is history. Slowly but surely, I have been learning to speak, write and read Chinese Mandarin. At around that age, I started learning English and Russian as well, later in life Greek, French and Icelandic. The key to it: love what you do and do not give up on it, one can stop , take a break ( and the break maybe short or long) and then one gets back to it.. It is a never ending loop , like the universe itself 🙂

When she was 3 years old we returned to Australia - a multicultural country. When our daughter was growing up she didn’t face any racial discrimination. She has light skin complexion & black hair. When she was in high school many of her classmates can’t work out her ethnicity. She had been mistaken to be Lebanese, South American etc. No one realised she was half Chinese until she told them. • @legendarypussydestroyer6943
      @legendarypussydestroyer6943 Год назад

      @Wei Fan I think it's a matter of if the accent is native or not. In English you have a variety of British, American, Southern, AAVE, Canadian, Australian, Kiwi etc which all are considered native thus accepted accents. When you speak with foreign accents you're using the phonetic rules of another language to speak English, which would then be considered improper.
      It's the same with Chinese. You have all the acceptable native northern accents from various parts of the Northeast. Other Mandarin accents are less accepted because they're seen as being influenced by other languages. Particularly southern ones which are influenced by Southern Chinese languages. Even though many southern areas doesn't speak any languages except Mandarin anymore, the relics still remain in the accents. Imagine if you forced the entire Europe to learn English and speak only English in formal settings and even push it in private settings too. After a few generations many areas won't be able to speak their local languages anymore, but they might still speak English with their 'unaccepted' foreign accents even though they speak it as a first language.

    Hi Guys - is it possible to do an interview of someone who is half black half Chinese or maybe half Indian half Chinese? I think it would be interesting to hear their story. I know that lots Indians marry Chinese people outside of mainland China so it would be cool to interview a Chindian.

    I'm not studying Chinese and don't want to do it,but this interview was really interesting to watch, what about his Russian accent it's hard to understand , I understood the first phrase,but if I didn't heard the word "Richard" I wouldn't do it, another word I didn't understand at all,don't think I'm trying to show how bad he is at Russian, no,I'm just trying to say that if he'll see my comment, he should to work on his pronunciation to be even better in my language. Keep going,Richard!

    Hey Aileen, just want to ask if the conversation between you and Richard is completely natural and unfiltered? I mean, did the content of the conversation get reduced in difficulty, or was it left as it is? I can see that the conversation is very natural and doesn't have any envidence of reducing in difficulty.
    Just want to know it to see if this podcast episode's difficulty can be considered as "native" level.

      the usage of words and grammar is completely native, but the pacing is slightly slowed down. i can tell that both speakers are enunciating words more clearly than perhaps a normal regular conversation would be.

    You should consider not labeling this as intermediate. This is not intermediate. It's a normal conversation at normal speed about 200 different things. If you understand this completely you are fluent chinese. Not intermediaty.

    Interesting video, but I’m captured by the title of this segment. Half-White, Half-Chinese. It is a shame that in the english speaking west that so many of including the huge diversity of peoples of European heritage have been reduced to a complexion. In this conversation we learn that this young man is at least half New Zealander perhaps British. People of the world are much more than a complexion. They carry with them the unique histories of their families, their historic national cultures and the tribes from which their familes originated.

    Richard, I can teach you Russian if you can help me with Mandarin 😀. I feel the same as Richard. I cannot explain why I need to speak Mandarin and why I want to move to China, - probably same about Richard. I cannot explain. It's just a feeling. Also first vibe about Richard was, - what is this Russian guy doing here.
