Damn, this Kirk is so funny! a real cool guy ...and he definitely knows how to tell funny stories. I wish more Chinese guys were just as cool as him to talk about personal things openly, even if embarrassing. I feel this constant holding back and trying not to lose face and not to admit to any shortcomings but rather just not engage in a conversation at all.... ashhh.... that doesn´t bring the society forward. So again, well done Kirk, we need more Kirks! and well done Eileen for asking these good questions and holding the flow of the talk so nicely!

Some stats: The transcript has 10,190 characters in total, with 1,267 unique words. For comparison, the most recent interview with 怡菲 had 22,025 characters and 2,059 unique words, definitely much harder. Thank you so much!

      Thank you for the stats.
Variety in this channel makes it so you are over quite sure about the difficulty you will encounter.
Different guests have different vocabulary choices and their own idiolects( the way they use words).
A learning experience nonetheless I think this channel is second to none.

Kirk is great! Really thoughtful and personal answers, his opinions and experiences were so engaging to listen to. It takes a mature person to admit they don't know certain things, as was the problem with his own father. I felt a lot of empathy when he talked about still not knowing what to do with his life. Fantastic podcast, thank you so much for uploading!

I think you brought up a good point about people learning to be parents at the same time they are parents. I think the one child policy makes it hard for parents to learn. I am the youngest of 3 and my mom always said by the time they had a 3rd child, she learned a lot about kids. She no longer freaked out if I had a cold as a child or worried about me getting a cut because my brother and sister had already taught them that kids are resilient. The first born always has the hardest because parents are also trying to learn. I had a lot more independence than my older brother or sister and also, with 3 kids, my parents didn’t have the time or energy to watch every single detail about us. And don’t worry Kirk! I’m over 30 and still have no idea with what I’m doing in life :)

I read a comment that said it actually felt like a therapy and yeh. My parents were also super controlling, in China it's more common but as a Chinese person that grew up in another country it was seen differently by other kids. Like I suffered from that controlling thing. As a kid I couldn't go out that much, I had to study Chinese and the other language, write my tenses, learn my tables even tho they only ask to learn two tables lol. And my mom would be like don't eat that, it's not good for your health and she will believe everything said on we chat or by her friends, like don't eat cold things or drink cold things during ur period otherwise u will be sterile, and I will say I need proof, 👀 none. It was like trash talking u if u have the possibility to go to a good university but u choose another path or trash talking u because u didn't do well. The thing with the animal is true as well or criticisms abt how clean ur house is. And so on, ppl will always tell it's ur mom no matter what and show respect but like bc ur older I have to respect u but not u? It goes both way 😂, so she will say I'm ur mom that's all (winning argument, also the lack of education that makes a big difference, they see things on internet and believe it but when u have to prove things they are like internet is full of intox/infox 😂.

TOO FAST? Control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time on desktop computers and laptops OR 25% at a time on smartphone!
Access the playback speed controls as follows:
Desktop Computers and Laptops: open the video, then go to the lower right of the video's screen and click on the settings icon (it looks like a GEAR). On the upper right of the options window that comes up, you will see the link "custom". Click on the "custom" link to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 5% at a time.
Smartphones: open the video and go to the upper right of the video's screen. You will see 3 dots. Click on them and you will see the link to open the "playback speed" controls. Click on this link and you will be able to control the video's playback speed by speeding up or slowing down the video 25% at a time. Note that viewing the video on desktop computer/laptops gives you greater control over the playback speed (5% vs 25% on smartphones).

Yes, they most certainly are. I once dated a Chinese lady (no not a girl, but a grown lady). Her mom hated me, and was very racist, which at first her nasty behavior amused me until she took away my then gf’s phone to keep us from talking. Apparently, there was no physical or verbal struggle involved between them, the 22 year old simply acquiesced and sadly handed her phone over to the tiger mom, as if she was a child. True story. I’m sure many others can top it though.

Your experience just proves that you don't need a high education to succeed in life. You seem to be smarter and more adequate that most people who do have even a university degree. Just like some very successful businessmen and entrepreneurs who never finished college and are now much more successful than many of those who have a PhD. Of course, it's more often the exception than the rule, but it does show that "formal education" doesn't always equal learning skills that truly help you in life or make you better at making money, doing well in life, or being a good person.

是否 is an adverb that means, whether or not while 是不是 is more like a phase, but has the same meaning as 是否。You can ask a question by saying: 你吃过饭了,是不是?/ You already ate, right? But you cannot use 是否 in this case.

his mother mellowing out as she's gotten older sounded something like growing old to me lol bc she recognises deep down that parents need to tone down on the controlling after their kid reaches a certain age so that the kids grow into themselves and become strong and assertive after they're like 30-35. the parents can advice after that but they can't control a full grown adult in their old age, and an old person shouldn't run the house with an iron fist and should give up their power little by little, stuff like that. in my country and asian countries in general apparently, seeing a person act rough with their older parents isn't all that uncommon, some people might even grow up watching their fathers and mothers yell at and nag at their grandparents for things they can't control due to their old age, so maybe his mother sees mellowing out as a natural part of life
