  • In 1977, an icon was born. The Lightsaber - ethereal in nature and terrifying in power - became the symbol of Star Wars, and would go on to define this series for more than forty years. As the franchise evolved, however, so did its sabers. Star Wars Visions - an animated anthology of shorts by some of Japan's biggest studios and directors - continues to celebrate this ever-changing legacy, but one short in particular - The Ninth Jedi - champion instead a return to a more civilized age...

    I think that much of this nostalgia for old lightsaber fights is misplaced. A bad rendition of kendo would always need to go away. Kendo itself, especially if you watch its tournaments, is a stilted shadow of the kenjitsu it came from. Departure from it was inevitable and much needed. The exploration of blade and force abilities as necessary as some of the craziness of some hema practitioners rediscovering the blade and reclaiming it from modern fencing. Complaining about the dual blades saber (more a staff really) is asking the wrong question, the real question is where is the saber naginata?

    • @BeyondGhibli
      @BeyondGhibli  2 года назад +61

      Yes agreed, it was inevitable. As I stated, I think much of the slow, tentative feel was out of necessity rather than design. They were fighting with very fragile props in '77, so it makes sense that the fights felt careful. I'm sure Lucas would have loved to have a crazy saber fight if he could have!
      I didn't intend to complain about the dual bladed saber - it's still my favourite iteration of the weapon. I absolutely love newer lightsaber fights, I just feel part of Star Wars' philosophical soul was lost to bring those incredibly bombastic clashes to life. I still adore the spectacle of them though - and Darth Maul is still my favourite SW character :)

      @@BeyondGhibli I'm of two minds. Arguing out of design: Consider how heavily influenced Lucas was by Kurosawa. So much so that the duel in Star Wars is kendo duel. At the time kendo was exotic, alien, to a public with fencing and swashbuckling in the zeitgeist. Done well kendo is intense, patient, explosive. I don't think in Star Wars Lucas was going for crazy in Star Wars. But Kendo was mostly gone once we get to Empire. Arguing out of necessity: One of the first and most common complaints I heard from young kendo practitioners here in the San Francisco Bay Area when I tried that art for a little bit, was that the swords master on Star Wars had only 2 years of kendo when the movie was made. If you add to that, that I can't imagine Alec Guiness or any of the actors of the day doing the level of work required to get good enough to showcase kendo, the way an actor like Ray Park would, you get a slow bad kendo. The fact that the props were delicate was a happy coincidence. But, as I think about it more, what I think this bad, tentative kendo did, was add weight to the moment. Each strike felt like it had more consequence, because the swordsmen treated the weapons so carefully. Later on the acrobatics and physicality took over, they diminished the weapon and made it more about the wielder. I'm guessing thats part of what you're recognizing might have been lost.

    • @NoobNoobNews
      @NoobNoobNews 2 года назад +17

      During filming of the Empire Strikes back and then Return of the Jedi, the props got less fragile and the saber fights got significantly better. They do look boring from the perspective of some, but from a combat perspective, Vader's movement especially is a prime example of skillful reserve and power. He moves very little, but his guard is impeccable and his every strike is meaningful and achieves its purpose. There are some breakdowns on youtube analyzing the swordsmanship which is eye-opening on how good they are.

      I would go much further tbh. The OT fights aren't elegant or tentative or momentous (in their choreography). They were bad. That's not entirely the fault of the choreographers or actors, as someone else pointed out, it takes some real training to have a fight that lasts more than a few movements look good, but it's still true.
      I'm not terribly in love with the acrobatics of the PT, and definitely not with the really silly sabers, and that's why I grew to really enjoy the more Iaijutsu things Visions has tried to do with them. The design of the lightsaber makes it amazing for the idea of the quick draw kill, and it builds some fascinating characterization, of a community dedicated to serenity, but very ready to kill

      Something else to notice is that most of the users of these "crazy" (can't think of a better term) are mostly Sith. I could be not remembering certain canonical Jedi that had something that was a bit more over the top, but I think it fits with the way the Sith lust for power, thus they attain more Kyber crystals, more powerful weapons to fight the Jedi.
      In addition, during the prequels, what we see is the Jedi at the height of their power, the longest lineage in terms of masters upon masters passing down their training, experience, and knowledge to the next generation. That would lead to a lot more bombastic fights because they had the resources, knowledge, and time to properly train their padawans to fight, thus allowing what we see.
      I also think it's hiding something that the prequels were telling us: the Jedi had lost their way. Instead of simple, deliberate strokes, you have the jumping, twirling, all kinds of tricks, which I think symbolized their corruption and eventual fall as well. Qui-gon fought simply and deliberately, while Obi-wan and then Anakin were much more willing to add some flair to their styles when younger.

    It's honestly incredible how 9 animated shorts have managed to bring more innovation and variety to Star Wars than almost anything else the series has seen before.

    • @The_Blazelighter
      @The_Blazelighter 2 года назад +11

      I think it really shows how much freedom each studio was given. We were given 9 incredibly different takes on what Star Wars could be, ranging from an old Samurai film to a modern astro boy. And not only were they given free reign of their story and direction, but they also weren't bound by any previous lore or rules of the star wars universe. I can definitely tell that trying to fit Trigger's ludicrous over the top action into actual Canon would be a real headache for any writing team.

    One of the reasons I list the Obi-Wan vs Maul fight in rebels as one of my favorites, it takes our expectation of a massive lightsaber fight and subverts into into a true masters duel. They spent more time posturing and working out one another's position and reactions before any strike, and in the end Obi-wans mastery showed him Maul had learned nothing and lured Maul into a trap. It was a brilliant fight, short not because it needed to be, but because in a real fight then can be over in a split second because one sees a flaw the other couldnt hide. Not that all lightsaber fights need to be that way, I still get lots of enjoyment out of some good lenght fights, Return of the Jedi being my absolute favorite, but I think they could learn from these about making good story telling emotional fights.

    I always saw Lightsabers as a reflection of the wielder. Yes there has been more spectacle but notice where that is within the Sith, those who wish to gain power and show it off. Jedi have had far simpler designs in the blade itself, only those with a connection to the Dark Side or conflict with the Jedi Ways have flashier sabers. Colors were also a reflection of one's core values, while the hilts represent one's personality.
    The story telling of these blades hasn't ever disappeared, they became lore info and just lost the spotlight. Ninth Jedi brings the saber back into the spotlight to remind us how special and unique each blade is and how it interacts with it's user.

      The Sith gain their powers from anger, hatred and greed, but the most useful emotion to have on their side in a fight is fear. And as needlessly flashy as it is, your average padawan-in-hiding is probably going to be terrified to see the Inquisitor's lightsaber start spinning, just as Kylo's downright angry blade leaves no doubt as to the fate of any member of the Resistance who goes up against him. Indeed, it would be daunting to see Greivous wielding the weapons of your fallen allies, having to compare your abilities to theirs (and hoping you aren't found wanting), and I doubt there's any villager brave enough to have called Kouru's staff thingy an "umbrella blade" to her face.
      The Jedi, however, have pretty much always kept it simple, on screen always wielding either 1 or at most 2 blades. The flashiest on screen Jedi was Pong Krell, and... well, he was Pong Krell. The Jedi don't seek to intimidate, escalate, or overcompensate, merely find the best solution.

      I think many Japanese anime studios understand that what makes those fights good is the emotional and psychological connection of the duelists. It's not that different from Evangelion or Gurren Lagan in the sense that pilots need to be synched to their robots or copilots. The saber/robot becomes an expression of their inner selfs. Love, love love this subject. In the original 1977 film they mostly got the dueling right since it's a weightless blade of energy and need only touch to inflict damage. However later on it got used like a weighted Katana which doesn't make any sense. The best example I can point to on the proper use of this blade is to watch Count Dooku. He wields the blade like a blade. Light and nimble, letting the blade do the work as it was employed against Obi-Wan to injure and disarm him.

I don't agree with his take but that explains why their luke and vader's fights are so heavy hitter compared to fast paced prequel battles.

    For me personally, I would love to see more of The Village Bride as the first stepping stone and yes, in a tale of a different story telling of travelling across worlds and thei connection to the force. Ninth Jedi to me although have a actually good twist but in the ends it ends down to the Dark Vs Light, Republic Vs Empire all over again. To me, this kind of story telling kinda bores me as it seems the galaxy is no short of conflict at any given time and very tiring if wars after wars keep happening one after another.
    Star Wars kinda neglected it's nice world building over the years. The Mandalorian picked up a lot of it since then. The Village Bride is a step up what what The Mandalorian could have become, traveling across worlds understanding the locals. Besides, it's been a long theme that the Jedi overly participated in politics lead to their downfall. They neglected the people of the galaxy which in turn, the people of the galaxy views towards the Jedi varies from saviour to hating them and as far as being a myth. Shows how much disconnection the Jedi have towards the people in their galaxy.

    Great video. Rebirth is exactly right. Not just for this anime short, but I think the entire premise of The 9th Jedi, would be a great template for a live-action Star Wars series (of movies or a show), if Disney/Lucasfilm were to jump forward in time a bit.

    EDIT: It is after making this that I realized that this was part of a series and this was a specific episode in that series. WAHMP-WAHMP~!
    But, yeah, this is a great episode, and also several of the points remind me of The Elder. :D
    In terms of simple, elegant saber fights, I have to mention The Elder, which is one of my top spots in terms of episodes (along with The Ninth Jedi... and The Duel, which, yes, is rather over-the-top).
    I found the episode fascinating, and both grounded and human (stilted dialogue aside^): more to the point, the poise, ideals, and methods of fighting all actually felt like events that might happen in a live-action films (compared, even, to some of the events in The Ninth Jedi).
    The titular Elder himself was flashy and somewhat bombastic, but he was also surprisingly deliberate. The fact that he recognized the sheer *power* held by Master Taijin when Taijin was... just standing relatively still... felt really cool. It was implied that the force wielders were generally using the force to enhance/move themselves and manipulate things around them in unseen ways until the Elder brought out the "flashy" lightning power, which was a clear sign of desperation (even as he was enjoying the violence of the whole confrontation). The comparison and contrast in the frenetic madness of the Elder's movements to that of the master Jedi's was also an extremely nice bit of characterization.
    ^ Itself a classically Lucas thing, it's even more stilted than normal.

    Having seen these shorts, I think it just proves how hard it is to tell a compelling story in a very small amount of time. Most of them were very lackluster and unengaging. I hope this doesn't become a jumping off point for more Star Wars. As it stands, in the hands of Disney, Star Wars has a lot of trouble finding its place.

    I'm not gonna lie I live the aspects of different iterations of Sabers. Sure it's a spectacle but a really good spectacle. The most important thing I get from all the different forms of light Sabers is that different individuals adapt the Saber to their personality and speciality of combat style. Darth Maul uses a Bow staff style lightsaber because that's his primary weapon of choice this could be perhaps in his planet he grew up being trained how to use it so he adapted the light saber to a staff.

    "The Ninth Jedi's lightsabers are more a reflection of the quality of their user, than of their terrifying power. They don't need fancy hilts or spinning blades to wow us; they convey everything they intend to upon ignition."
    So, sort of like how the old EU (now relegated to Legends, sadly) and the Filoni/Favreau version of The Clone Wars depicted Kyber Crystals: the crystal chooses the wielder, and thus is determined blade color and size.

    Interesting take. I too have great nostalgia for lightsabers. I was 7 when I watched Luke I ignite his saber for the first time. I thought the ANH was neat, but not too interesting until that point (except maybe the cute and creepy Jawa - I did say I was 7 at the time). From the point where Luke ignited his saber and swung it about lightly, I was totally, irrevocably hooked on Star Wars. Though I don’t like the Disney trilogy, some of their movies and programs seem to have a reverence and respect for the essence of what Star Wars is and I’m hopeful that future programs will bring about a renaissance, exploring the best parts of the genre. As for the idea of colour changing sabres, I was intrigued, but like I said, maybe the renaissance has already begun.😁🤞

    I love the idea of the forge crystals, a logical way to keep Jedi in check. I actually had no issue with Darksider minions using overly mechanical sabers because it fits the theme of the villains in star wars being to mechanical. But the jedi not being able to design their own sabers is a downer to me. Saber design can reflect the character even the nuances of the regular lightsabers.
    Obiwan's: simple easy to maintain design is reflective of his caring and caring nature and lack of reliance direct combat.
    Anikin/Vader: tough and bulky, he is direct and heavy-handed. Vader's has an ignition lock for saber throw to compensate for the high ground
    Qui gon: had multiple power cells that allow the blade to change intensity with how tight he grips. his respond accordingly to the moment attitude.
    Dooku: Elegant curve of a fencer and his aristocratic demeanor.
    Tarre Vizla: Bekar hilt with an ergonomic utilitarian design.
    Ezra: Spare parts lightsaber with a stun blasters to compensate for his lack of skill and to disguise it in the Imperial era.
    Heck let me come up with 2;
    A Jedi archeologist whose saber has a 5 length setting knife(cutting or igniting fuel for fire), machete(cutting through foliage ), sword(in case of combat), and great sword(to intimidate enemies).
    A Jedi guardian can have a lightsaber that has a loud and bright ignition that transition to the recognizable blade of a guardian that functions as a warning shot to make citizens feel secure and to scare criminals.
    I actually think these nuances can be better represented in a shonen-style anime rather than in western media.

    the best explanation of why both anima and live action sword fighting looks the way it does is simple filming. In the background of Kenshin, it is explained that some of the moves are changed simply because the real moves do not film well. Such as the famous quick draw, I would suppose it is the same for light sabers. I do NOT watch films for authenticity, if I want that, I'll watch a documentary. I watch it for entertainment. One of the best (entertaining) sword fights in Star Wars ...to me...don't throw things, is Kanan and Ezra in the hold of the Ghost. Yes the fighting is probably all wrong...you never, ever turn your back on an adversary...but still it is thrilling to watch. I really enjoyed the Visions, tho I really do not like the style of some of the animation, I love the story lines. I too think some short series would not be amiss. As for the nine star wars, didn't mind the prequels, altho we all know how they end, but the sequels...they completely lost me on Ben Solo...cause in my mind...Ben will always be a be a Skywalker. The Solos are Jacen and Jaida...and Anakin.

    4:26 I was writing Star Wars fan fiction back when the prequels were coming out (1999, the Jedi Academy on the old EZ Boards). I always liked the idea that the force-user could choose, find or even forge their crystals. Synthetic crystals? Exerting ones will! Acquisition by chance? Trusting in serendipity. Acheiving it as a quest? That crystal would remember HOW you got it.
    There's no limit on interpretations, yet I always felt if you went away from the sword interpretation the responsibility was on the writer to make it seem plausible and I always felt The Empire Strikes Back had the right idea with Vader using the environment and other things as weapons. Dark siders were not restricted to Jedi traditions.

    I watched all of the Visions episodes and enjoyed them all. But to dive deep into the lore, The Ninth Jedi is best and give a new twist to an "old" story. Sure, the others were great in their own way, but they leaned on more of a spectacle than in-depth lore. However, Episode Elder and Duel, come to a close second in looking at the lore in different way. Tatooine Rhapsody and T0B1 were quaint, amusing and fun episodes to watch and give the Star Wars genre an lighter look into savage galaxy far away. The others were good stories but not quite lore material. Overall, I enjoyed Visions as it is nod to the fans that have dreamed Star Wars since 1977 and absorbed every medium that was available at the time. I do agree with the notion of turning the lightsaber into a spectacle is was the wrong decision by the franchise (save for Darth Maul's saber staff, that was COOL!...ahem...LOL). But other versions on the lightsaber do hold merit as newer generations would make their own contributions on an established concept and improve upon it. I so appreciate the review on Star Wars Visions. Thank you.

      I think continuing with the Skywalker legacy was a mistake overall. Rebooting the Empire AGAIN, bringing in the old characters that suddenly break everyones' personal headcanons, creating ANOTHER Sidius, etc. J.J. Abrams is a bad storyteller and it's about fucking time audiences realized that. He has ONE trick up his sleeve, which is used in every single sci-fi movie he makes: A big, blacker spaceship. That's his way of continuing franchises-- just add a big, blacker spaceship and we're good!

      There’s a quote from Michael Arndt somewhere about how he struggled to integrate Luke Skywalker into the script for Ep7 because as soon as Luke showed up it drew all attention away from the main cast.
      Ofc Disney had to have all the legacy characters show up so they couldn’t not include him and it boxed the story in from there

    I get that stuff like spinning lightsabers and other wacky styles is kinda stupid in design and it’s a step away from the original premise of what lightsabers are suppose to be. And I do like the premise of a sabers traits (I.e. color, length, width, shape, etc.) being something decided upon the psyche of its current handler.
    However, I don’t think that removing more wacky light/darksaber esque weapons’ concepts from circulation is a good idea. Their are many different fighting styles in real life that use unorthodox/impromptu weapons; as well as weapons that are mainly designed to confuse a opponent from knowing how to properly come at you.
    Lightsabers, IMO, shouldn’t go down the same approach as to why laser based shotguns don’t really exist in the series. Weapon specialization and versatility is something that always has some level of use that lets it out preform the old reliable standard in certain cases.
    In other words: Everybody shouldn’t have to only use handguns because they technically work fairly well in every situation when a sniper rifle or rocket launcher would be the best weapon in your current predicament. With the same being said for Star Wars’ lightsabers.
