Rekindle the Light - How Studio Ghibli Inspired Tears of the Kingdom

- Tears of the Kingdom, like Breath of the Wild before it, wears its inspirations on its sleeve. In this video I look at the many ways the work of Studio Ghibli helped shape this duology, the themes they share, and the lessons they impart.
Ultimately, this is a love letter to the Legend of Zelda - a series that shaped us all.
This is a relatively spoiler-free video, containing plot elements only from the first hours of Tears of the Kingdom, That said, visuals of enemies, characters and locations from throughout the game are present.

Finally, this video would have been a lot less explosive without the work of the lovely folks over at r/HyruleEngineering. They're doing crazy stuff with the building mechanics in Tears of the Kingdom, and their work is evolving every day. Special thanks to everyone who allowed me to showcase their creations in this project!

Thanks for having me as part of this video ❤
I knew I recognized that voice! Nice collab.
I was so happy to hear your voice!!!
I have had diarrhea every day for eight years.
I gave a start when I heard GMKT! Two truly great voices narrating this made it so much better
Sometimes things are Beyond Ghibli, but then it goes full circle and returns home to Ghibli
"I've grown up with Zelda, but Zelda rarely needed to grow up with me" - God never has a line from a video essay made me tear up till now. I felt awash with all these memories of this series over the 21 years I've been alive, I don't think I'll ever be able to fully grasp how much Zelda has affected me. One of the few constants in my life is this series and I love how this video illustrates its excellence and enduring ability to inspire and awe.
Thank you so much for making this video!
I’m 33 and grew with this franchise as well , totk is one of the few games to make me feel like I was 8 years old again playing ocarina for the first time back when it launched. Everyone I knew that enjoys games even people older than myself played totk lol. It was like a big love letter / “thank you” to all the fans that have been following this amazing series for decades now (Jesus I feel old typing that lol)
“One of the few constants in my life is this series.” Dude, you nailed it. This comment resonated so much.
This is a movie. Grab something to eat, headphones and sit down, calmly, one evening, to watch this masterpiece of calmness and stakes.
Watch it with a friend, family, or alone ^^
I can’t wait to watch it with my partner but she only finished the tutorial area at this moment, do you think it’s safe for her to watch it like this?
@@3botronic maybe Wait 1 week of progression ? Or ask Siméon that know the Game ^^ i don’t bother being spoiler if it is to better enjoy the game later :)
@@WingSun hahaha thanks for the reply I’ll try my luck then
Don’t got the food but do have my headphones and a nice bottle of wine lol
Holy COW the detail in the subtitles?? The editing?? The music?? This is incredible, and I savored every second! 💚
Wow, chill out. You are coming across a bit creepy. Just some advice.
@@saintcarreyett they were just excited over how well-made this video is. there's nothing creepy about that at all.
joe, never apologise for taking so much to or making a video this long.
it's beautiful & absolutely worth the wait. thank you.
i've never played a single Zelda game, but acknowledge the importance & cultural impact that this IP has had in the decades it's existed.
I had literally just finished watching Castle in the Sky for the first time 20 minutes before this was recommended to me, and I spent most of the film telling my spouse how much it and Nausicaa felt like TOTK. What an amazing exploration of those parallels and influences you've put together here - kudos to all involved in making this video happen!
Every part of this was phenomenal but I want to take a sec to say that the work on the subtitles is seen and appreciated. It's not often I see good captioning on this accursed platform, and this was beyond that. Attention to punctuation and pacing of speech, different colors, and even moving sound effect captions? Absurdly good. Fevol, if you see this, know that you deserve an award.
Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm really happy to hear that you enjoyed them!
I promise that I'll try making the next video's subtitles - whenever it releases - as good or even better than this one.
Many thanks again for your thoughtful comment, it means a lot to me!
It was very surface-level. Everyone knows Ghibli, but the way you omit the work from the same studio before Hayao Miyazaki bought it, TopCraft, is very similar to how West keeps erasing such history and making media with planned obolescence.
The Flight of Dragons from 1982 is like maybe 70% TO A TEE a Zelda movie, based on a book just like Ralph Bakshi went out of his way to produce orgiinal LotR animated movies.
And If DISNEY hadn't distributed Ghibli movies, they might be as obscure in the West, as the tougher Disney movies that are now being silenced as "racist". Even Dumbo with depictions of both hard-working and loose Black Americans of the Jim Crow era, just barely inched back into the spotlight with VHS releases and was able to provide that WELL-ROUNDED representation, instead of one-sided narratives.
Today I showed someone who’s not much of a gamer Tears of The Kingdom, and one of their first comments was that it looked like Studio Ghibli, that’s how deep rooted and evident that inspiration is.
Both games wear that inspiration proud with no intent of hiding it.
I got goosebumps from the magazine. Two giants that have massively changed my view on what art.
I wonder if Miyazaki thought miyamoto would become the almost god like figure he is in his own industry back then lol .
@@mookiestewart3776 I doubt he cared much back then, due to his distaste of the medium.
Perhaps today he could have a more informed opinion, if we could get them both to talk for a couple of hours and share stories on the challenges they conquered, and lessons they learned from as their monumental careers unfolded, that would be amazing!
I would also add Fumito Ueda and Hidetaka Miyazaki to make it a 4 person talk. One can dream... hahahaha ;)
TOTK was such a special experience man. Multiple moments that brought the kid on me back out . Both it and BOTW feel like a giant love letter to the franchise and the fanbase as a whole. The Zelda team is just the best.
Legend of Zelda is so special. I'm glad to be amongst people who feel the same. My grandma used to sit me in her lap and play Zelda on her NES when I was a baby, and on one of her visits she bought me Windwaker, starting a lifelong love of the series. Whenever we were together, Zelda was brought up at some point. She loved watching me play Twilight Princess on her Wii because she said it looked like she was watching a movie.
Last October I visited her, unknowingly for the last time, and got to show her Tears of the Kingdom. While I could have shown her the cool mechanics of what you could do in the game, I just rode my horse through the world and let her dictate where I stopped. She kept talking about how beautiful the game was and how it looked like a painting when I wasn't moving. We spent countless hours exploring Hyrule together throughout my life, and I truly hope to spend countless more doing the same thing with her memory in mind, and with people I love.
Having watched your videos for a while now, the way you tell a story, your pacing, tone and timbre, definitely make good use of "Ma", whether intentional or not; something that I think shines all the more so in these longer videos. Fantastic work, looking forward to the next one! Also, was pleasantly surprised to hear John in this!
Your Breath of the Wild video is what introduced me to your channel and beautiful way of storytelling, and it's incredible how far you've come in the since then. This video is essentially an incredibly well-crafted short film; you should feel proud of yourself!
I wish I could watch this for the first time again.
I started to tear up when all the Zelda titles rolled out at the end in chronological order
Haven't seen anyone else mention it but great job with the subtitles at 23:00 Fevol small things like that really add something
Thank you! I've tried hiding adding subtle (or sometimes not-so-subtle) subtitle effects all throughout the video - that one was one of my favourites.
I was slightly worried that they would be too distracting, but I'm really glad to hear that you liked them!
from time to time i come back to rewatch the intro
Gods. This is such an overwhelmingly powerful video. I found myself emotional so early on, so much beautiful introspection and hard work. How lucky are we to have a Good Blood essay and Beyond Ghibli essay in one week. This work reminds me so much of him.
There’s a Good Blood essay too?!? *runs*
@@TabithaBlankenbiller it was a new essay on Metal Gear from the RUclips channel The Escapist, Good Blood worked on a video for them a few weeks ago, very well made.
Thank you for articulating this so brilliantly. You get it. You get what having growing up with Zelda, and Ghibli, means, what’s it’s all about. When Tears was released and the discourse was all about the amount of content in the game, I felt like the soul of the game had passed people by. Especially when I hear about people never using the horses. Of course they aren’t that useful, but nothing beats the vibe of galloping around hyrule on your steed, across bridges, over mountains, through valleys. When I play this game I am just constantly wanting to soak up the atmosphere, it’s almost overwhelming how beautiful it is at times. I hope now it’s been out a while and everyone has done the main quest, we can all just start to chill and be in the world of this game without worrying about being busy.
I am absolutely shocked about the quality of this video. Amazing work and analysis you did. Thank you, truly!
I know i'm late in saying this, but I just wanted to say thank you for including my video at 20:41! i'm so glad to be part of this work of art and to be immortalized in a Beyond Ghibli video.
This video is just amazing and was well worth the wait. Thank you so much for including my doohickey at 21:11 - I seriously feel so honored right now to be immortalized in this absolute work of art. The amount of effort put into your content really shows and I have no doubts that this gem of a channel will continue to grow :)
that soft tarrey town piano theme in the background during the first part of that video is killing me
Thank you for this! Your first video compelled me to purchase a Switch and play BOTW despite not having any experience playing a video game since Ocarina of Time. Keep up the amazing work!
Metal Gear Zonai spotted at 20:35. I love how much influence Ghibli had on this game.
Excellent choice having Super Eyepatch Wolf voice Hayao Miyazaki.
I don't know how, having never played a zelda game, but it feels like you've captured the vibe perfectly in this video
You’ve never played one??!! You’re missing out my friend!! Far and away it is the best franchise in gaming . Each time a new mainline title is released even other devs around the world stop and pay attention . I highly highly recommend you play at least a few of them.
I like the fact that characters that weren't even alive during the calamity before BotW aren't addressing it, they treat it like a fairy tale or ghost story. It makes the NPCs of the world feel more realistic and natural.
I say this, because there's a ton of Zelda channels that have needlessly dogged TotK for the characters not really talk about the previous game. Yet, this video just proves why it didn't. The world itself is moving on and healing. It makes more sense for NPCs that weren't born when the Calamity took place to not have much to say about it than for everyone to have detailed information.
It's refreshing to see something like this.
Death's Doors art direction gave me Ghibli vibes. It's a charming and really well crafted little game with gameplay similar to older Zelda titles
I don't sit and watch 40-minute videos. Oh, wait. I can't say that anymore. Time just evaporated while watching this. I couldn't look away. Thanks for that great start to my day.
I had to prepare myself emotionally upon seeing the thumbnail -- I know that Beyond Ghibli never holds back on the atmosphere and the quality. Thank you again!
I'm still watching, but I had to comment on how much I appreciate your subtitles - they're timed so perfectly, and the color changing as we dropped into the depths made me so happy!
the moment at 20:21 too, where they shake and turn red with the explosion! amazing attention to detail
I was scrolling through the comments looking for subtitle appreciation! I had no idea it could change color, move around, filling etc.
Really well done! 🎉
The final minutes of this video has bring me to tears, it's so crazy to think of how the Zelda series has been an integral part of my life.
Thank you for the amazing video!
I'm only 6 minutes in and I already love your puns.
"Shaking the foundation..." (Talus emerging from ground)
"When Tears of the Kingdom landed..." (Link landing in a water)
That was quite the treat. And I can't quite believe how many obvious references I have missed.
Already a classic
The subtle editing in your subtitles bro is top tier
This is the first time I've ever seen this on any RUclips video
Glad to hear @supereyepatchwolf3007 collaborating here and there ❤
This video is overflowing with love, attention to detail, and atmosphere just like BOTW and TOTK, and just as they are the best games I've ever played, this too is one of the best videos I've ever seen. Thanks for this masterpiece.
Feels hard to be a creator these days, but your videos showcasing the beauty, inspiration/connectedness and thought that still exists are soothing and help my heart. Thank you, truly.
This is a beautiful video. I think lately I've been burnt out on games, even Zelda, a series I've always loved. Worried that I'm not making the best use of my time by playing. But it's a reminder that it's okay to relax and appreciate the beauty and silence in between busyness of life.
Even you aren’t playing games you still need down time, doesn’t matter if it’s gaming , watching tv, movies, books etc. at the end of the day watching tv or gaming are the same thing . They accomplish the same goal of entertainment . So don’t let yourself fall into the mental trap that somehow gaming is worse , or somehow more of a waste of time than anything else you would do to entertain yourself. It all serves the same purpose and if you enjoy gaming then just have that be your thing. Obviously it can get to unhealthy levels but that goes for literally anything , even things people would consider “productive”
Just commented on Twitter / X. I omitted to acknowledge the credit you give to those who help / support you with your projects, more success to you 👍✌
What a coincidence, I was just playing it when this dropped
Why was I tearing up by the end of the video...Both of your analyses on breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom are fantastic and I love them to death! Amazing Video
How dare you youtube! I clicked on ALL notifications! And I missed this upload by 4 months!
Wouldn't have discovered you uploaded if I didn't get curious and checked this channel manually for new uploads!
Your Breath of the Wild vid 5 yrs ago was one of the first videos i've ever watched in your channel and it remained one of my favs from your vids. Great to watch this video years after watching the first one.
Eyepatchwolf showing up was so good.
Great video as always!
I can say, this was one of my favorite videos on RUclips, ever. Even since been here from its original establishment.
Much like my birth on the release day of Zelda I in the US, I am reintroduced why this adventure franchise should mean so much to me. I am glad you and I share such a similar experience, and an appreciation for this era of this story that nods to the many things that make Ghibli films so beautiful.
The joy of existence.
My favourite part of TotK is falling. When you jump of a floating island or are launched into the sky, the time between the beginning of a free fall and a landing is most sublime. A time when there is no fighting or story or exploration. Just you and the wind and clouds.
I LOVED this video. This is easily the single best video on TOTK I've seen to date. You did an excellent job exploring how the similarities between TOTK and Ghibli films go beyond surface level. Also, good points about how comparing media to Ghibli delutes the impact of those films.
I also love how you drew parallels between Princess Zelda and Nausicaa. BOTW/TOTK's Zelda is easily my favorite version of the character to date; she's the first Princess Zelda I've really loved, and I like how you call attention to the fact that everyone in Hyrule is fighting to get her back because the kingdom is a much better place with her in it.
I aspire to someday be able to write with this level of sheer eloquence, beauty and appreciation for art. Thank you for both of these insightful, well-crafted, passionate videos, I truly appreciate the work you put into these.
Leeeeeets goooooo, new beyond ghibli vid❤️
This video has given me a much deeper appreciation for what Tears of the Kingdom was going for. Thank you BG.
Seriously, my favourite channel on RUclips, by far. What Joe mentioned about 'ma' definitely rings true. I can't wait for the Chobits video after watching this. I also need to get back too, and finish this game haha.
strangely, reusing the same map from botw for totk makes perfect sense. In botw, link was wandering through a now unfamilar land and so we discover it along with him. now that he seems to have recovered all of his memories, Hyrule is no longer unknown to him, and our experience in botw wild means that it is no longer unknown to us.
Beautiful as always
Eyepatch Wolf is great, arguably the greatest with that Garfield masterpiece.
But frankly nothing beats Beyond Ghibli voiceover. You could do it professionally imho.
What an absolutely beautiful essay. I cried nearly the entire time. Many of the things you've said I already had felt, but you displayed them in such a way that it was more than I could ever express and moved me deeply.
Thank you for such a glorious video, I shared with so many people.
Bravo! And thank you, truly.... Zelda is my favorite fandom of everything and this was just... Absolutely beautiful.
🖤🖤🖤
I can't thank you enough for putting this together. I haven't played BoTW and landed straight into ToTK and could see the parallels with Ghibli from the get go. They made the Zelda franchise truly cinematographic with the two games it seems.
I'm not a gamer. I haven't played a video game since I became obsessed with losing Super Mario World on my brand new Super Nintendo when I was 11 years old. 😆
So, as fascinating (& intimidating) as all these beautiful new slicked-up video games are, it's your own personal "mah" effect that keeps drawing me back to Beyond Ghilbli.
I love how your music & your slow (but not to slow) leisurely pacing causes my body to relax & my breathing to slow down as the wonderful comfort of your voice wraps around me and submerges me into a place where nothing exists but the experience at hand & nothing matters whatsoever but the warmth & (ever so slightly disconcerting) beauty swallows me whole.
I love it & look forward to it. I sometimes get a little frazzled waiting for your next video to drop, but then somehow disappointed when one finally shows up in my feed cuz that means that in a few sweet minutes the peace & tranquility will be gone again until next time... whenever that is...
Your channel is as much a part of my love for anime & Manga as those art forms, themselves & I'm so happy Haruhi lead me to it! 😆
Keep up the excellent work & I'm happily looking forward to your promised video about Chobits!
Then again, when it finally gets here, I'll be disappointed that I'll have to wait yet again for your then next video to drop.
*sigh*
Thank you so much 🥲
I’m really glad that Overly Sarcastic Productions led me to this video. It is fantastic and well worth the watch, like, comment and subscribe
You really captured why the legend of Zelda and the works of Hayao Miyazaki are enduring to this day.
32:27 nice to see some Tales from Earthsea representation!
You really captured the atmosphere of Zelda games
another parallel that strikes me with kingdom and wild is how much hate, lust and fear poisons the land and its people. the calamity was born because the hate of one man laid bottled up and dormant under the earth, forgotten and angry. he malice was so great it leaked out into the world like demon boar in monanoka and the war against nature and man. The kingdom fell because everyone was ruled by fear. fear of the calamity, fear of failure, of the weight of expectation. they fell into complacently that war machines and faith alone would save them. the kingdom before the calamity could not summon the courage to stand up and act and it was only when zelda stood up in the defense of link, who was alway courageous, did she finally summon up true courage in herself and was able to complete the trinity. i like to think her act of courage awakened it in the survivors to pick themselves back up and carried it into the future.
Beyond Ghibli/SuperEyepatchWolf collab?! Love the Zelda inspired cutaways btw. Best vid yet?
Been waiting on this one, and you did not disappoint! Another instant classic!
Its good to be back.
I’m so happy I lived in these times where you get to play these precious games on release day. Unbelievable how we sometimes overlook them because of our hectic lives, and so many releases for games with graphics as the main thing. I also grew up with Zelda, but Zelda rarely needed to grow up with me as well.
this is a super random aspect of the video, but i absolutely adored the subtitles. i watch the majority of videos and shows with subtitles on, so it was so nice to have them be fun and dynamic and color coded. they were so unique and well done and i just really needed to say something about it :) (also this video was incredible and i loved it! you are an amazing writer and your content is so inspiring
There's always something that reaches my inner-child with these. It's happy tears I promise.
That cross-fade at 34:03 is so satisfying.
1:27 didn't expect a Eyepatch wolf cameo but it's totally welcome!
2:00 didn't expect a GMTK cameo but also very welcome!
I will enjoy every second, thank you
40 MINUTES BG IS COOKING
Omg a sequel to one of my absolute favourite RUclips videos!
A wonderful video, thank you so much.
Studio Ghibli was something I only encountered in my early 20’s but it’s movies are very special to me. My favourites being Princess Mononoke and Nassicaä, perhaps that was always going to be given my love for the themes that drive Zelda games? I’ve been a life long fan of the Zelda series so it’s fascinating to see two of my favourite creative minds, Miyazaki and Miyamoto intersect like this.
I didn’t click initially with the depths being a parallel for the underworld in Nausicaä but when you think about it, it’s a perfect fit. Even down the insectoid creatures that fly around.
A excellently crafted piece, thanks for making this
This video is so good makes me so sad it doesn’t have a million views already
loving the video! beautiful work. and I can't wait for the notes!
brilliantly done, joe! it was well worth the wait. plus, the unexpected cameo from supereyepatchwolf was a fun "oh, hey!!" moment haha. ^_^
Adding the stamina gauge to shots of Laputa is brilliant!
Link looses all his upgrades.
Samus: "First time?"
I really love your videos mate and was happy when I saw a new one this morning. Keep it up!
You never disappoint with these videos!
I've been playing totk this whole time putting off fighting Gannon. I decided this morning, today is the day!!
That was brilliant, thanks man!!
Another fantastic video as always, the voice guests were a nice surprise!
Amazing work! Loved it❤
Thanks as always for your hard work and heart, Joe. Your videos never disappoint.
Masterful once again my friend! Thank you so much for the amazing videos!
Astounding video here! Absolutely love your script!
This was BeyondGreat.
Thank you so much to all of you who made this video come into existence. I've always felt like Studio Ghibli Films have held a certain exquisite set of artistry for years. And to see The Legend of Zelda: TOTK videogame perpetuate such artistry is infinitely gratifying for all to see and experience.
Wishing all of you much love and much success in all that you do! 🙏😇
Just watched the breath of the wild one for the first time a few days ago, so stoked there’s one for totk now!
As always, I finish your videos quietly in awe, my heart overflowing with reflection and introspection, and I find myself inspired to use that energy to write or create in some other format. I think what I enjoyed most about this video essay was the discussion of the atmosphere, its sounds, and feelings, which I think are often overlooked. Whether it be anime or game, niche or commonly loved, I look forward to your next video!
That was beautiful. Thank you for another amazing video!
Bangers as always Joe! Love the work Saku did too!!!
your videos are always great works, but this one. This one takes the cake. What a wonderful experience!!!
This was absolutely wonderful. Thank you 🖤
This channel deserves so much more love. Honestly your essays are so inspiring and entretaining, thank you for this beautiful video!
Absolutely incredible work, sir @Beyond Ghibli. I've enjoyed your videos before, so much. These are the kinds of things I'm aspiring to bring to RUclips at this time, the thoughtfulness, care and tone of this is an experience. Please continue these good works. They're an inspiration on many levels.
