Vinland Saga - Those Violent Delights

  • Vinland Saga is a phenomenal piece of Viking fiction - packed in equal measure with kinetic violence and beautiful humanity. Over its fifteen years in publication, mangaka Makoto Yukimura has given us one of the medium's best works - one that has truly earned the saga of its title.
Vinland Saga was originally recommended to me during 'Patron Picked Purchases' over at the Beyond Ghibli Patreon - an annual event where I'll read and review a manga of your choice! For the month of March we're doing PPP again, and anyone who pledges $5 or more can do just that. It's part of a pledge drive to tip us over the edge of a stretch goal we've been on the cusp of for ages - a deep-dive into all things Full Metal Alchemist. So if you want me to read your favourite, consider supporting me on Patreon:

The manga section in the middle of the video was edited by the talented Lines in Motion - a wonderful manga and anime analysis channel that you should absolutely check out!! Their work can be found at / @linesinmotion

There are two kinds of Vinland Saga readers:
    1) Those who realize the tone shift in Volumes 9 & 10 is a brilliant piece of writing which allows Yukimura to let his series take a breath, give his main character some crucial development, and clarify his themes.
    2) People who are wrong.

@@SerRemiel I normally find pacifists in anime and manga to be annoying, sanctimonious twits, but I make an exception for Thorfinn. Rather than the universe bending over backwards to show how “right” he is, Thorfinn has to wrestle with how best to live with his ideals in a world that doesn’t care about them. There are points where he even admits the old code of violence and honor his culture lives by does have a certain logic to it, even if he doesn’t agree with all its conclusions. As the story progresses he has to reconsider and sometimes modify the practice of his ideals in light of life experience. It makes him so much more relatable than your typical “violence bad, sob, cry, why can’t we all get along?” anime pacifist.

Yes I completely aggree. After all the violence and nihilism in the earlier volumes, showing the reader there are ups in life and it isn’t always bleak is honestly amazing. I’m sure the series will go back to some deeper themes but let’s just give Thorfinn a break for once. He deserves it

One of my favorite moments in the series is when a nameless Viking is dying on the battlefield, and he is excited to see the Valkyries and go to Valhalla and... nothing happens. His vision goes dark, and he realizes there is no afterlife, that his entire warrior life was a lie, and then he dies, one among thousands. It’s a harsh moment that represents the series’ realistic depiction of violence and its consequences.

Makoto Yukimura said in an interview that his goal is to build a story with a non-violent hero, yet keep it as exhilarating as a more standard action driven seinen. In my opinion he's doing this and more. The story itself has an intriguing plot with no lack of emotional depth, and the artwork (if the video hadn't demonstrated it well enough) is some of the most technically impressive in the industry. I can't wait to see the future of the series.

Got caught back up with the manga recently, and it feels like the series could end at any time now. It's exciting, and definitely a little sad; but it definitely feels like the series is going out on Yukimura's terms.
I'd also strongly recommend his other well known work, Planetes, in either its manga or animated forms. It on its own stands as a wonderful crunchy scifi about a team of space janitors clearing errant debris from earth's orbit, but also pairs well thematically with Vinland Saga, as a story of unpacking the real drives behind it's cast and a shared humanity in a world rapidly shedding national borders as it reaches starward.

Yukimura has announced that Vinland is moving into its final arc, but given how this man dedicated 1600 pages and 54 chapters to his prologue, the manga likely has several years left to run.

Fantastic video! One thing i'd like to add though, is that alongside all it's other qualities, Yukimura has stated in some interviews, that all the major beats and twists of the story were planned out from the beggining(something that's unfortunately rare in long running manga) and one thing this adds is some AMAZING foreshadowing and dramatic irony to the prologue/earlier chapters in general, it's impressive the first time you read it, but i really think it takes at least one Re-read to realize just how deft yukimura's hand was when crafting this story, it's some truly phenomenal stuff, and especially seeing how the chapters being published right now can already be considered the "Final Arc" of Vinland, i can't wait to see how this story will wrap up

Thank you for distilling one of the important aspect, the core theme of this narrative, which many readers over look. I may have been enthralled by the notion of violence 15 years back when my brother bought the first volume in japanese. But as the months passed by as the chapters gradually built up, and the years went by. I finally understood, what the author meant to imbue in this story, the story he needed to tell beyond the violent prologue. A story of a man who saught true peace, and without those early chapters, his, Thorfinn's pledge wouldn't have held the weight that it does.

Personally, I don’t think I’d have bothered to look into the Vinland Saga manga, had I not decided to check out the anime. This is because, usually stories like this wouldn’t really be my thing. I decided to check out the anime since I’ve heard good things about the source material. The anime’s beginning was a bit slow but the soundtrack and animation kept me intrigued. Once I good to a certain part, that became the narrative hook and that’s when I was on board. Having consumed the anime adaptation and enjoying it more than I had originally thought, I am probably going to check out the manga itself now

I can't help but wonder if Yukimura is using the Norse in Vinland Saga as a way of contrasting how his own culture tie violence to honor: Both its historical use by Imperial Japan (leading to horrors such as Nanjing, Unit 731, Kamikaze pilots & Hiroshima) and its effect on Japan today (such as the very high suicide rates). To break the cycle of violence, through compassion, empathy, forgiveness and repent, is a universally strong message.

Vinland's saga compiles a lot of beautiful segments and also illustrates how Yukimura as a mangaka has fully infested his time in creating a masterpiece. I Hope for Naoki Urasawa's works to be told on this channel in the near future.

I've never read a Comic or manga like Vinland Saga.
Almost every later chapter has a panel with such beauty, that I had to stop reading and just looked at it for several minutes.

It just felt like Violet Evergarden, when I read this manga even if they aren't the same. The war after feeling is there.

I really enjoyed the anime - complicated characters. I wonder how much they evolve and change vs how my perception of them evolve and change.
