Fun fact, this movie is well loved in Brasil because the dub team went above and beyond to integrate brazillian surfer slang, so much so that bilinguals find this movie significantly more funny and heartfull in portuguese. They also make brilliant puns using the names and locations in the movie.

The biggest lesson I took from surf's up as a kid was that what you do, you should be doing for the sake of it. Competitions are fun but don't become obsessed with winning no matter what. In the surf's up Cody's first impression is that in order to be taken seriously as a "surfer" he needs to win a competition. Big Z eventually teaches him that although competitions are fun, there's more to it. The heart and soul of surfing is being carefree, ideally with good people around you. Just vibing.

The late 2000's early 2010's cg animation was MARKED by existentialism. So many stories featured characters contemplating their place in the world, their worth as people and their own dreams and fears. The standard for animated films pretty much any other time is protagonist faced with a quest, they will question their abilities and worry about failure, but the quest itself is never a matter of question. Surfs Up, Kung Fu Panda, Megamind, Rango. These movies all feature stories which primarily derive conflict from within the protagonists own hearts, am I cut out for this? What even is my quest? What is my purpose? Why am I here? What good am I? There is certainly external conflict, but it is secondary to the characters conflict of spirit.
    Who am I?

Kung Fu Panda having one of the most important lessons: There is no purpose, no secret ingredient... the meaning is to live on purpose and align yourself with the Dao, which doesn't exist. Alan Watts wrote some great books on eastern philosophy but the long and short is that we are naturally unnatural beings forced to avoid hypocrisy in a world full of contradiction. It is often wise to surrender to the importance of willfully being free.

@@lukarikid9001 It can be said about anything in life, even in relationships. Don't chase the perfect grandiose moments of a Hollywood movie climax, enjoy the ride, appreciate everyday, the journey, the small things. If you will be stagnant in wait for your perfectionism to be sated and stars aligning, it ill never happen as nothing is perfect. And mess ups are just part of the learning process that for some reason we prioritize over what is DONE RIGHT. Flaws are picked up so much that people are just petrified to do anything. Experiments may not only lead in failure, but in something genius too, you just have to muster up the courage to try. That's all. Just try. No expectations for picture perfect. And with courage calling to courage of being unapologetically you, you'll grow the best circle of alike minds you could hope for.

To be fair , the moral of Surf's Up is very simple - it isn't about winning, it's about enjoying what you do (Cody), and don't forget down the line why you loved it at the start (Geek). This whole existentialism is kind of a more advanced or philosophical take on this simple moral, and I remember as a small kid I totally got the message the first time around. That's why it is one of my most favorite movies to this day. The other being its incredible execution of an animated mockumentary. It's genius :D

also the fact that the movie is disguised as a documentary with that real cameraman following the character ( even getting attacked by the native people at one time ) really make me really immersed in that world. it really has those quality of all those found footage movie that came out during that time like Rec, cloverfield, blair witch etc.

The biggest lesson for me is that we must remember to chill and not focus so much on paddling out so far, but rather focus on the good thing that a wave will surely be along to pick us up and us as surfers of life can just ride it. The main impetus of this school of thinking is that life is too short to get too hung up on the little things.

The part where you're talking about having too much freedom really resonated with me. My dad killed himself when I was 15 yrs old and my mom obviously devastated as well just didn't have any authority over me (altough she very much did try I'm just very stubborn and did whatever I wanted).
Everything always came quite easy to me, I have great friends, I'm smarter then most people and never put any effort into school yet was at the top of the class for most subjects. Those 2 things combined at now 23 yrs old have not done me any good at all. I feel stuck in place, I feel paralyzed. I have no discipline at all and I procrastinate everything to the point I just say I can't do it even though I know for a fact I can. I needed someone to give me directions and call me out on bad behavior (and actually punish me for it when necessary).
Having freedom is indeed a blessing and a curse at the same time and I'd go as far as say that too much freedom will have you fall into self destructive behavior most of the time.

But the friendship was short lived and I fell back to my bad habits. I thought I was simply lazy. I mean, I technically don't need them to succeed, but I kinda do. :/

It's eerie how similar your story is to mine. My dad didn't die but he did get out of my life completely around the same age and my mom did try to take full control by going "independent single mom" but truth is I needed my father more than anything because I needed discipline and push to become better than what he was. I've turned 23 yesterday and I've achieve many great things and failures but what I found is that the failures that comes from trying to get to a goal is much less painful and in fact it feels good knowing what not to do to get there. And that change happened when a I was around 18 after realizing that winning my classes is nothing but a narcissistic rush to feel accepted by your tribe or family. I was about to be a web developer, I was always at the top of my class, but then I stopped to do what I really enjoyed doing: music. I don't want to give details because it truly does not matter to anyone outside of me. I love music and I have goals and competitions to win. That's the suffering I've chosen. And I had to choose one. I couldn't wait any longer to feel like I've found something because I was young and I realized early work is rewarded greatly. So I've picked my then hobby and stuck with it. Now I can produce full albums, do vocals for it, mix it, master it, and promote it. all by myself. not to brag but to just tell you that it really doesn't matter how big your boat is, it's how you rock it.

Wow, this random Video about a movie I once saw as a kid and never liked got recommended to me 10 months after it got released and it is shockingly accurate now. At no point in my life I would've needed this video but now it's literally life changing.
I just turned 23 and I'm lucky to be working independently for a few months now and it's going great. But since a week I have panic attacks from a fear of death and I struggle to find purpose and to not waste my life. My family and friends are quite distant and no one believed in my idea. Everyone is just giving me this vibe of "Nice that everything works out for you now. Seems like you know how to handle things after all" but I don't. I'm good at math and planning but I just got lucky. I can do literally anything but it feels impossible to do the right thing. I never learned a job, it's impossible to secure this standard of living for the next 60 years reliably and I'm just trying to find a path towards something that matters to me. I bought an old Mitsubishi 3 months ago because I love cars and again everyone told me that this is a waste of time. >If I'm not working a real job, I should at least focus on my company and not waste my time< type of stuff. I spent the last few weeks modifying the car, planning on what events I want to attend and what sponsorships I could get to start a second source of income out of my automotive interest, just to prove to people that this is right or good or working. But thanks to this video I just realized, I don't care about winning a race or some competition. Thinking about earning more money, securing money, what could earn money and proving to others that I am capable of earning money is just depressing.
I like spending most of my time within communities that share my intrests, I like helping people with my knowlege and skills and most importantly, I love driving. It felt like everything that makes me happy is the opposite way of productive and therefore the opposite way of the "right" way. I don't want to think about my entire life right now, I just want to drive...
Thank you, TheFictionAddiction. Greetings from germany

As a kid who’s mother was emotionally unavailable in a single parent household while my dad was having his midlife crisis after his two divorces, I ate this movie up! I was kinda pushed to the side because I have my dad’s personality and I also looked like a girl version of him in a way so it made my mom like doubt me and my existence a lot. Basically I have been labeled a failure from a young age and I always knew I was the black sheep weird sibling, which is what Cody is. Everyone around me wanted me to fit in and act and react like them, but I couldn’t no matter how hard I tried just like Cody. This movie is for the weird kids that their family openly never had hope for. Like they never could imagine your future, but they knew you’d probably still be alive and that’s basically all they expect of you. Cody’s story is like that in a way. I heavily related to this growing up as the black sheep of my family on both my maternal and paternal side. Honestly now that im 22 and I’ve had my Cody moment in life, which is life has no purpose and you gotta be truly alive to truly live life, im not even that weird. My Cosy moment, In my eyes this means to enjoy life regardless of what you’re doing and thats quite similar to the message of the movie! I was just trying to enjoy my life and I did it differently and my family didn’t like it so I decided to keep doing what I enjoy just in my own space. I think this movie subconsciously influenced me growing up as I heavily watched it on Netflix during my crisis years of high school and it has been very uniquely inspiring and I now quote Chicken Joe on the regular as a bid I haven’t dropped in years. This movie helped little me realize what I think is cool isnt what evryone else around me would think is cool or want me doing, but it was okay for me to do it and there are others who enjoy this too. It helped me to realize I had meeting people like me to look forward to in life. I still haven’t met alot of people who have similar taste to me in my small city, but funnily enough my brother is a little weirdo too like me and became a fellow black sheep. People are weird and this movie highlights that too. God, I just love this movie and I was obsessed when it came out.

To be fair the majority of storytelling is about one form of self actualization or another. Most stories can easily be said to be about existentialism, because the struggle is often to find meaning, purpose, or happiness. To find where they belong.

    • @roberteriksen6434
      @roberteriksen6434 Год назад +6

99% of Disney in that era was:
      - Dad/family wants child to be one thing, child wants another
      - Child goes on a journey away from home in the first act after dad/family went too far about it
      - Child gets life experience on their journey and the self actualization to choose their own path in life
But that's not a good RUclips title, and its not a good video, so better just cram something in there that sounds wild cause it is. Never once did the main character have a sense of meaninglessness in their life, they just learned to love the activity rather than the acceptance coming from being successful in that activity. That's not existentialism.
Actual clickbait shit tier content, you're literally worse off and less media literate if you believe the video. As you said, by that token almost every movie ever 'is about existentialism' if this was valid.

@@chikovida10 Is he really though? Let's do a brief summary of some of the films Disney was putting out in the era, shall we?
Hercules: Young man discovers he has a greater heritage but isn't sure he can live up to such massive expectations. after many trials and tribulations, he takes his place among his family as an equal
Treasure Planet: Young man with a missing father figure becomes a delinquent due to lack of discipline and strong fatherly role model (that one aged pretty well for today) joins a crew on an adventure and finds father figure replacement. While betrayed by said father stand-in, he takes the lessons to heart and becomes a better man, joining the Navy.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire: Seemingly obsessed Archeologist is determined to prove mythical city exists and clean his families name from mockery and ridicule, by chance his grandfathers old friend is willing to fund and support an expedition to do just that. As it turns out the city is real, but is in danger from treasure hunters who were also apart of the expedition. Man helps natives repel hunters and save the city, and thus their civilization.
None of these have anything to do with or even remotely deal with existentialism so much as it is varied versions of the hero's journey and the main characters growing and becoming their actualized self through hardship and experience.

And, at the beggining, I had this idea in mind, that "this has to work out" or "I have to get rich doing it", just to compensate the fact of quitting or to show my family that it was a good decision. But after a while, I began to think that it's better for me to focus of the craft itself. I should focus on getting better at making videos, and put my best effort in every single one of them. I people like it, then that's an extra.
In this journey, Marcus Aurellius "Meditations" is helpíng me a lot. And I'm really loving the way I see the world right now because of stoicism.

The true reason evil exists is because people often forget that they are not the center of everything and human life is rarer than the very diamonds we have in the universe... What a pity that humans try so desperately to seek blindness from reality

Big Z in his prime was the highest ideal for Cody, Tank is what he would have become if he held on to the need for validation and won, and older Big Z is what he would have become if he lost. Meanwhile Chicken Joe embodies the highest ideal and sets an example for Cody. While it may not have been conscious, chicken Joe befriending Cody also impacted Cody to the point where after Cody’s transformation to a good surfer thanks to Big Z, when he sees Tank going for Chicken Joe in the climax of the movie, he finally gives up his dream of winning the competition in order to save Joe from a wipeout caused by tank. when cis people hear the word "transgender" they think of genitals, when trans people hear "transgender" they think of this. Existentialism, Authenticity, Acceptance, the desire to be happy in a system that works against you. People want you to be and act a certain way, but the expectations set on us at birth are not who we are, we are more.
I'm sure someone will complain that I'm another queer person making everything about being queer, but I don't care about those people, this movie is literally so trans, Cody is so trans. Not because of his penguin genitals, because he has to choose himself, fight for it, and learn how to find happiness.
Great video, I love when people explain philosophy and ask life's questions by analyzing children's movies. Just because it was made for a younger audience doesn't mean it can't have anything good to say. It should have something to say, kids are smarter than you think. They might not consciously notice the lessons these movies teach, but their brains will.

I've been battling trying to find my way ever since then. I'm almost 30 now. Anyways around the 1:34 mark I'm sitting here all baffled by the similarities and I quite literally yell out "what is happening right now" and almost as soon as I open my mouth a bunch of totes i have stored in the other room fell over seemingly out of nowhere. After i check to see if it ended my cat I notice she was in the living room window I go to say "thank God you're alive" she jumps through the blinds and lands hard on the floor and is now roaming as if she's looking for something as i type this out. This all happened in a span of 15 seconds. It was put chaos and I don't know how to feel about it.😅😅😅😮

I think what people seem to be missing here is that existentialism is not moral realitivism. It doesn't mean that its not wrong to murder, steal...etc. Existentialism means that your destiny isn't picked out for you. You aren't "taking the wrong path" because the path doesn't exist until you create it. An eraser doesn't HAVE to be an eraser. You can use it as a door stop. It only has an "essence" of an eraser because we decide it does. Existentialism says "You decide what you are because you ARE "

In this case I think Cody was just looking to be respected and not be a “bum” in everyone’s eyes, but he was chasing his passion not because he was trying to prove something with it, it is just what he loved doing, and that love for surfing is his purpose in life.

I've loved this film as a kid, simply because of the style of this documentary group filming everything with the interviews and everything while still being a regular film with a good story that is easy to follow. Other comments have pointed out the humour brought in some synchronisations, which is also playing a huge role in this. But this philosophical aspect shows, that the film is even better because it is enjoyable at every age. Alongside Rise of the Guardians, this is one of the movies not many people I know have watched, so I would call it underrated.

Gotta agree to his view "the literal meaning of life is whatever youre doing that prevents you from killing yourself". We all just do what we can do best, like and how we can help our closest to have a life we feel fulfilling and just. Its always a tiny tap different for every human but grant scene is the same
