    • @zombywoof864

      Just like high numbers DO NOT mean it was good. This is a stigma that haunts the industry today. Just because alot of people happened to tune in or go to the theatres to see a film does not mean it was good quality entertainment. Hollywood doesn't get this nor do they care as long as something happens to rake in millions of $$. Which is why Hollywood is littered with reboots, sequels, and comic flicks these days.

    • @zombywoof864
      @zombywoof864 2 года назад

      Even the music side suffers this way as well. Did you know bands like the grateful dead and Jimi Hendrix were considered one hit wonders? All because only one of their songs were popular among mainstream and made it to the top 100 billboard charts. It's sad that numbers dictate what's good and what's not rather than the actual art itself. Who knows how many great musicians and movies we've missed out on over the decades from this stigma.

    Zappa, Berle, and Lasser all seem like casualties of the show being new in the 70s and still finding its way and no one understanding it at the time. If no one wanted Berle to do his old timey comedy act then he never should have been hired.
    It sounds like Zappa thought he could do it but it was too much for him and perhaps this made celebrities re-think whether they could handle live tv. Its one thing to pull off a great performance when you get multiple takes and another when you only get one chance on live TV.
    Meanwhile, apparently Lasser thought live TV was an invitation to ignore all the sketches and just do whatever she wanted. Its too bad this was early in the show's history because 20 years later the show probably would have handled her cocaine arrest with a funny skit about it rather than her going off script and sitting down and talking about it.

    Not sure why Hader is here. The ratings may have been lousy, but not the show. Some other rough watches: Tim Robbins had a heavy handed monologue, and looked disgusted to be there at all. Wayne Gretzky was awful. Andrew Dice Clay was a controversial choice, and sweated and twitched his way through the show. The episode wasn't all bad, but he was visibly uneasy just being there.

    I had high hopes for Patrick Stewart’s show after STNG ended, but it was mostly awful.

    • @tuttleberry

      I guess I agree, somewhat. It's like - Seagal just wanted the male cast to be stuntmen for him, so he could beat them up - doesn't matter what the stories of the sketches are. At the time of the episode I had no idea Seagal himself was so unstable, so I probably just chuckled a little at the episode. Now though, yeah, it's so bad it's funny.

They could bounce their humor and selves off him, and it worked. But i never thought of Milton as the front man or the guy in the spotlight. I feel the same way about Jerry Lewis and others. Dean Martin was the man in the spotlight. While Jerry was ok in some movies, really, was he that big star entertainer that Dean was? No. Milton, Jerry, etc were great backups.
