When Downey was on, SNL was at its worst. Not Downey’s fault of course, just odd cast choices at the time. The cast was comprised of mostly established actors with zero skit, standup, and writing experience.
SNL really traumatized these amazing actors and actresses but they also learned to better their craft after leaving and I’m happy to see some of them return
Chevy leaving allowed there to be focus on the rest of the cast and for the show to evolve as a whole, so it worked out best for everyone. Similarly, Paul and David Letterman were a perfect team and he was better off there than on SNL. "Creative differences; I was creative and they were different." is an amazing line 🤣 And Norm's firing was the worst decision NBC ever made - his Weekend Update tenure was absolutely legendary.

Leslie was easily one of the WORST cast members ever. She played the same character 99% of the time. She wasn't fluid with lines, she mumbles half the time, and she never really fit the roles that other actresses could have easily filled.

Did I miss the reason why Al Franken left SNL? Billy Crystal did stand up I believe on the very first season. He told a story once about Gilda Radner, himself, and SNL, but I never heard the whole story.
Many of them start in stand-up comedy, which is a very individually-creative genre. They may not necessarily fit well into sketch comedy, which usually involves group presentations and according to scripts written by other people.
Leslie Jones wasn't terrible, but she didn't have a lot of range and usually just played loud and angry characters. Honestly was glad when I heard she was leaving the show because it just means they can replace her with someone better.

But Farley and Sandler were so successful they had no choice but to keep them on but once ratings started to slide... bam, kicked to the curb.

Leslie Jones is gone? I can finally watch again! The character they created for her (if it wasn't her actual self) is incredibly unfunny to me. I found her very annoying and she rarely added to a sketch. But in fairness: it wasn't all terrible. I did laugh at a few of her jokes, like in the escorts sketch.

He appeared on a talk show in the 90s (I think it was Charlie Rose?) and he went on a mini-tirade naming folks and ranting about his apparent lack of good quality work... and the host tried to get him to back off because comments like that can easily torpedo your career. But Chase didn't stop, and the host seemed genuinely disappointed and sad when he did his sign-off. He just saw a man cut off his own head in front of him after trying to stop him.
