Went to a jazz fundraiser in the 90s. Chevy Chase & Bill Cosby hosted their egos were so large that they filled the whole venue. Eddie just takes himself way to seriously!
It's a toxic work environment Jan wasn't nearly as bad as Nora Dunn. Jan led a very reclusive life after SNL I think she was too nervous to keep on working. RIP she was great on SNL and many other things.
You heard it from a jealous crazy right-wing christian-addled nutcase who speaks little but lies, especially recently. Jan Hooks was a genius, even in minor roles.
I always loved Victoria Jackson. She is such a multi-talented actress. The show never quite figured out how to use her. Hence, she was kept in the 'dumb blonde' role for ten years.
I'm not sure you understand the meaning of the word "drama queen". The only thing in this video is that Tracy Morgan didn't like him breaking up in sketches. That's not drama queen. Morgan has done Fallon's show over 11 times so obviously there's no drama there.
I never understood why they hired Victoria Jackson. She had absolutely no range. She played a dumb blonde in every sketch. At least Jan Hooks and Nora Dunn had some sketch comedy chops. Hooks was especially talented. It's a shame she died so young.
Anyone can have a problem with anyone. It's a stressful job and most people there have more cocaine in them than they have hours of sleep, but anyone whose name appears more than once on this list are probably the ones to blame the most
Cocaine was a big problem for SNL behind the scenes in it's early days, but I think drug abuse amongst the show's staff is less than what it used to be.
I watched SNL from its debut. Chevy Chase's self-satisfied, narcissistic personality was always on display. He was insufferable from the start. His perpetually smug face signals, in no uncertain terms his firm belief that he's always the smartest, funniest and handsomest guy in the room. He ruined every sketch that he was in with his outsized ego and minimal talent. The fact that he continued to be in movies and still have a career absolutely mystifies me to this day. Chase remains the only SNL cast member that was my signal to go make a sandwich or have a bathroom break. I'll never watch a movie with him in it and fast forward through any scene or appearance he makes on SNL.
I use to like Kattan until I watched him on a game show. Such a jerk. He repeatedly called the contestants dumb and stupid. Plus he wasn't steady on his feet. He was missing steps and generally off balance. He was high, drunk or both.
@@cathleenwilliamson6668 Somebody commented that he had (has?) drug problems. Not an excuse to be a d-bag of course, but I hope he gets the help he needs if he hasn't straightened himself out.
Garrett Morris was and has been an underappreciated talent. On the last year of the original cast guest host Strother Martin spoofed his Cool Hand Luke role as the warden of the county prison farm. Only this time it was a French immersion camp. Morris played a camper who had to "spend a night in the box" because he spoke English by mistake. Morris kept me laughing throughout the sketch. I could not stop laughing when Martin voiced his famous movie line "What we have here is a failure to communicate." I just lost it.
That's super messed up. But Belushi is right that Gilda was something else. Gilda had cancer and did line edits for SNL every week until she died. She stopped being a cast member in 1980 and kept editing sketches for 9 years even when the cancer kicked in. I also love Jane Curtin. She's probably my favorite original player.
Jane Curtin: MASSIVELY underrated. She was the female Dan Akryoyd; she was in every sketch, every TYPE of sketch, could play any kind of character. A GREAT utility player.
@@TTM9691 absolutely. Jane Curtin can put on any hat and wear it with confidence. 3rd Rock from the sun was about Aliens but Jane Curtin Steals every scene she's in. I forget Lithgow is even there.
This video didn't elaborate much, but Eddie's problem with the comment was that Spade (and by default, Lorne Michaels and SNL), were denigrating a successful alumni of the show, as if he were some hot headed, egotistical upstart. As was already stated, Eddie Murphy literally was the sole reason SNL wasn't canceled during Lorne Michaels departure. That doesn't mean that Eddie Murphy can't make sucky movies, but it's a low, unnecessary blow to to be called a "fallen star" by the show he kept alive.
@@ericametzinger4061 He was hired for the 1980-81 season. He was the host of the Weekend Update, and was groomed to be a smooth, sexy type of TV actor. He is, perhaps not coincidentally, the only cast member to die by suicide (they found his body in a field, c. 2016 or so). RIP Charlie.
I remember that time period. At that time, the show was still a "boys club" and the women were mostly at the bottom of the pecking order. They could still shine (I mean, you can't hold back talent like Jan Hooks), but it wasn't easy. It got even worse into the early '90's when Julia Sweeney and Ellen Cleghorne held down the fort for a couple of years and a parade of other one-and-dones female cast members came and went. Those years saw the rise of In Living Color and then Madtv, shows with lots of female talent and more diversity.
If Tracy Morgan didn't like Jimmy Fallon, he shouldn't have "sold out" by choosing to appear on his (Fallon) show NUMEROUS times. Sorry, but I cannot respect Morgan for that.
People can work out their problems, and it seems like they did, bc the beef happened before the appearances. And I can see why Morgan would think this about Fallon, tho. I don't think Fallon's breaking was consciously a way to bring attention to himself, but you only have to watch some of his interviews and see how he often cuts off his guests to talk about himself to see he's a bit self-centered. That being said, it was kind of in poor taste that Morgan talked about it in his book. And also the way he talked about some of the other cast members. My guess: it was all for the sake of creating drama so he could sell more books. And that's kinda skeevy and sad.
Haven’t you noticed, SNL crew (ex and current) appear on his show all the time. Usually sounds like it begrudgingly. Almost like Fallon had good ties with Lorne Michaels or contracted or something. Even when Dave Chapelle was on it seemed he was making it clear it wasn’t for Fallon’s sake. Even made it feel he was there in support of The Roots more than for Fallon. “Yeah, last time I was he you were not nearly this famous”. You know sometimes when you just don’t like a guy……

Chase lasted all of season one and the fall of season two and he got the offer to do the movie Foul Play with Goldie Hawn, Dudley Moore and Burgess Meredith. His girlfriend was leaving to Hollywood so he followed her and decided to do the film. Meanwhile, Bill Murray was auditioned for the cast but either he was not picked or chose not to join. So he was on Howard Cosell's Saturday Night in primetime on ABC. It failed and was cancelled. He was asked to replace Chase and he did. He started in the spring of 1976 till 1980 but return one year later as a host in March 1981. Chase was a guest host a few times. 1978, 1982 and 1986 with Martin Short and Steve Martin. He also hosted in 1996 and in 1993 promoting his failed talk show of 13 shows. Bill also hosted in 1986, 1993 and 2009.
Thanks for the history lesson. Chevy actually won an Emmy c. 1976. In terms of his personal life, I think his girlfriend was in LA the entire time that Chevy was doing SNL, and that the stress of being on the other coast from her was one of the reasons he chose to leave NYC - and SNL. He was basically gambling that his growing fame would secure his future in LA, which is pretty much what happened.
All of the cast members were struggling comedians before being in SNL. You would think they could manage to get along with their co stars. Their egos suddenly inflated and there was no room for dissent. Big egos usually go along with small minds.
Also Jan Hooks, probably the second-best female cast member after Gilda. Or Julia-Louis Dreyfus, who wasn't really that funny on SNL but blossomed into a comedic genius afterward. Or, as a deep cut, the criminally underrated and underused Robin Duke.

I think women can be as funny as men (I.e. Kate McKinnon,) but Gilda was the Gold Standard of funny women IMO.
Went to a jazz fundraiser in the 90s. Chevy Chase & Bill Cosby hosted their egos were so large that they filled the whole venue. Eddie just takes himself way to seriously!
Its sad to hear negative things about Jan Hooks :(
It's a toxic work environment Jan wasn't nearly as bad as Nora Dunn. Jan led a very reclusive life after SNL I think she was too nervous to keep on working. RIP she was great on SNL and many other things.
@@erichaynes7502 I watched Jan when she was on a local sketch show in Atlanta, Georgia. She was very funny and likeable.

Somehow i am not sutprised that Chevy Chase took up the first three slots
Chevy turned 80, nobody noticed or cared...few cokeheads live that long.
I admire that Tracy Morgan came out as Austisim Spectrum.
He is still kinda a jackass
The Word “Autism” in Autism Spectrum is spelled A, U, T, I, S, M.
@@blakerice6238 Wow, you’re so smart. We are all VERY impressed
I believe Chris Rock also spoke out on being diagnosed on the the autism spectrum as well.
On top of it, Tracy had a brain injury from a horrific car accident.
So, Chevy Chase doesn't play as Pierce Hawthorne in Community, he is the Real Life Pierce Hawthorne!!!
No! I hate hearing Jan Hooks was a s#@% disturber. She was great in everything she did.
Jan Hooks was excellent.
You heard it from a jealous crazy right-wing christian-addled nutcase who speaks little but lies, especially recently. Jan Hooks was a genius, even in minor roles.
@@Teelirious She was especially hilarious in 3rd Rock From The Sun!
If Jan didn't get along with Nora Dunn and Victoria Jackson, well THAT just makes me love Jan Hooks even MORE!
I guess that helped me understand my workplace a bit. Although it doesn't make going in any easier.
I always loved Victoria Jackson. She is such a multi-talented actress. The show never quite figured out how to use her. Hence, she was kept in the 'dumb blonde' role for ten years.
She’s batshit crazy though. Legitimately cray cray.
@@livingmylifeinmonotone8966 yep, she is insane.
She is a Right wing Christo-fascist, so yeah, dumb blonde she remains.
She and Farley did a great Roseanne and Tom Arnold impersonation
Her whole stand up routine was based on a dumb blonde character, though.
“Uhoh, I’m doing something called breaking!”

Remember when Chevy Chase ruined the show Community? To the point they had to end the show? Ugh still mad over that loss
It was more Donald Glover leaving than Chevy.
@@XtopherMartin he left BECAUSE of Chevy. He just didn't like the work environment any more
Victoria Jackson may think that backstabbing kept her in the background, but the writers wanted Jan Hooks in their sketches (with Phil Hartman).
Vampire in Brooklyn was dope
110%, great movie
No!! Say It isn’t so… Jan hooks was a nightmare to work with?! That is so disappointing.
That's according to Victoria Jackson who is a complete lunatic.
That's kinda what I was thinking.
No she wasn’t. It was Victoria that was the nightmare.
i buy the part on Fallon being a drama queen. when you watch the Tonite Show you get the same feeling when you watch his interactions.
I'm not sure you understand the meaning of the word "drama queen". The only thing in this video is that Tracy Morgan didn't like him breaking up in sketches. That's not drama queen. Morgan has done Fallon's show over 11 times so obviously there's no drama there.
This channel is a go-to for information. It's the best!
They hated Chase on Community.
He’s streets behind
I think Kattan was probably the most hated cast member.
So when chase was playing an a#$hole on community, he was just being himself. Chase couldn't touch bill Murray's comedy with a million foot pole
Chevy Chase , Eddie Murphy , Richard Pryor were great comedians but with it comes the egoooo
There is no better drama than comedy
The truly hilarious part is that David Spade made fun of someone else's film career.
Wayne and Garth hating each other? I can't wrap my mind around that.
They're actually friends again.
SNL is a mecca of great talent. They barely scratched the surface of the long list of alumni. Therefore this was expected. Very interesting though.
Chase was never that funny.
Wouldn't go that far.
Right
He had his moments---if nothing else, he was hilarious in Fletch.
One trick pony. He did the bumbling Ford routine and everything he did was just some minor derivation of that.
@@hamupinhere I wouldn't either. He's always been kind of hit and miss to me.
Have you ever seen his 'gerald ford' impressions, tho? They were brilliant bits of physical comedy.
@@wylier throwing oneself to the ground and getting up quickly acting as if nothing happened isn’t really brilliant comedy.
@@Thedirtyginger yet it was good enough to earn Chevy an Emmy. :-P
I doubt that's the reason Farrell stopped talking to Kattan. Kattan was a known skit stealer and a bad person to work with
He and Oteri both
Jim Breuer pretty much confirmed that about Kattan, claiming he was a victim of his theft
I use to like Kattan until I watched him on a game show. Such a jerk. He repeatedly called the contestants dumb and stupid. Plus he wasn't steady on his feet. He was missing steps and generally off balance. He was high, drunk or both.
Looking past everything about Kattan in this thread (which I agree with)..............................he JUST. WASN'T. FUNNY.
I could not stop laughing when Martin voiced his famous movie line "What we have here is a failure to communicate." I just lost it.
i wanna see chevy chase and pete davidson duke it out.
Pete Davidson: Chevy is terrible, my Boss, Lorne Michaels, who literally just hired me, is a SAINT!
Most of the feuds involve Chevy Chase and Chris Kattan. The world missed out on a Chevy vs Kattan feud. Could have been the big one Elizabeth.
David Spade said nothing incorrect, too bad Pluto Nash hadn’t come out yet.
Without Eddie Murphy singlehandedly saving SNL during the early 80s David Spade would never have had a career.
@@DrRestezi Lorne Michaels returned and saved SNL.
@@RyanB1987 SNL would have been canceled years before LM returned had it not been for Eddie Murphy. Facts!
@@marcusj4641 Lorne Michaels didn't hire Eddie Murphy so that sense of loyalty to Murphy was never there, which is unfortunate.
I’m a huge Norm fan, but he does have a streak of meanness.
This Norm fella sounds like a real jerk
He is Hollywood
It's easy to look at Norm and Chris and assume Norm was the bully, but...who knows?
Gilda was a badass.
That is all.
Belushi didn't want to admit that Gilda was the funniest thing on original SNL.
Chase is like Bob Hope where they could be funny in movies but outside of that not a funny bone in their body. And who the hell is Charles Rocket?
I know him from Hocus Pocus and Dumb and Dumber.
He is a good comedic actor but he is not a comic. That's why his talk show was total crap.
Rocket was a snl member in early 80s I think
@@ericametzinger4061 He was hired for the 1980-81 season. He was the host of the Weekend Update, and was groomed to be a smooth, sexy type of TV actor. He is, perhaps not coincidentally, the only cast member to die by suicide (they found his body in a field, c. 2016 or so). RIP Charlie.
After the third Chevy Chase case I couldn’t finish the video lol
Thank you for saving my life that day.
Oh please. Victoria Jackson calling out Jan Hooks??? Jan Hooks was actually talented. Victoria? Not so much.
The problem was definitely Victoria, not Jan or Nora.
Chevy Chase's self-righteousness has its own ego that is self-righteous...

Jim Breuer's Cattan/McDonald standup is a laugh and explains way.
I remember the very first show . We had a party for it . I also remember how bad it got in the 80's . I quit watching it for about ten years until the Farley/Spade/Norm group in the 90's. I don't think he was without talent, he just wasn't cut out to be the leading man of the show, nor was he a fit for some of the roles they put him in like Ronald Reagan. I think he would have been fine as a utility-guy, sort of like Chris Parnell or Tim Meadows, with a better ensemble around him.
Oh my gosh, I love that Dr. Evil tidbit!!
Chevy Chase is literally the worst person alive. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard messed up things he’s done.
Chase the worst person? Not as long as Ted Cruz draws breath.
Chevy is really Pierce Hawthorne in real life.
I think the writers even admitted to this..
All of the cast members were struggling comedians before being in SNL. You would think they could manage to get along with their co stars. Their egos suddenly inflated and there was no room for dissent. Big egos usually go along with small minds.
If only John bulushi could see Kristin wiig she's the best male or female
Wonder what he would have thought of Julia Sweeney's PAT
Also Jan Hooks, probably the second-best female cast member after Gilda. Or Julia-Louis Dreyfus, who wasn't really that funny on SNL but blossomed into a comedic genius afterward. Or, as a deep cut, the criminally underrated and underused Robin Duke.
He'd still say the same thing.

Poor dude? It's his choice to be a jerk, and people dislike him for a reason.
