P.S. freshly baked bread aboard ship, plus all the other “goodies” were a huge morale booster. I love the geedunk onboard BB-59! I’ve made multiple visits to her since she first became a museum. She’s a magnificent ship, and the peak of technology for her day!
I was lucky when I reported to my first ship. I was already an E-4 and did not have to spend my first 3 months or so working in the galley mess, but I did get to work for the Master Chief in charge of the entire mess for about six months. Doing his paperwork and organizing his storerooms. That was on a sub tender and it was great duty. The mess cooks have all my respect. These men/women work very long hours everyday to keep the crew well fed and happy. God bless our military & country. Great video on the galleys and what goes on. Visiting your area is on my bucket list to complete. Shalom
I didn’t mess crank, but did “coop” cleaner duty on my first deployment…The Navy was always a good feeder on the holidays. However, I flew two missions on Christmas Day off the coast of Somalia in 1992. I was an AW1 during that deployment. Still have Thanksgiving menus from underway periods ( 3 underway, plus 1 forward deployed in Japan and another in boot camp+Christmas. I have no recollections of boot camp holidays though.).
