Inside the History: Machine Shop on USS Massachusetts BB-59
Thank you guys for doing what you do to preserve our history. I've been coming to visit the Massachusetts for years. I used to come with my uncle when I was a teenager. Now that I'm older I come with my fiance. We try to visit the Massachusetts once a year or so to come and see the ship and spend some money in the gift shop to try to help a bit. We both work quite a bit but we always try to make an effort to go once a year. I know it's not much but every dollar helps we don't have a lot but we do try to spend a bit when we go.
My dad was transferred to the U.S.S. Lionfish from the U.S.S. Ray after his B-29 was shot down on a mission to bomb Oita airfield.
So that’s why you see the iowas during there reactivation, all of the gun houses removed and guns removed they were sent off to be realigned.
Thanks for this! - Sonar Tech, 1964-82, 23 SONAR and 114 UWFCS systems tech.
I never enjoyed being in Turret 3 powder magazine breaking out those antique bags. God Bless my 47 shipmates who gave all 🫡⚓️🇺🇸!
Needs some molycoat to get her moving. I am a GMM .
one of these days I hope, I dont care what battleship it is, but I am biased to the Mamie in fall river, the 16 in gun turret salute will somewhere be in "operating condition". Who cares about the neighbors, do it once a year and shake your house to check its structural integrity. Hopefully the Navy with their billions upon billions on top of other billions worth of funding can spare 2 million to make it happen (condescending joke towards the navy) to one of the museum ships. great video, Massachusetts is looking tired, unfortunately. I hope the boards can come together to get funding to make her look better.
Thanks for the video Tom. I noticed Dr. John Scholes in your mount doing the firing countdown. From what you said I take it that the mount can not traverse at present which I believe is done Electro - Hydraulic. Do you have any plans to repair the traversing equipment to make it easier to clean your guns ?
As a American citizen and mass resident I'm wondering if I can legally own a optional ww2 Era 5 inch duel purpose twin barreled turret?
Well , after Oct 23 when the sale of long guns in the State will be almost entirely prohibited and the new empty roster of what is "permitted" to be owned by the peasants, that would certainly be quite a surprise to many. Best of luck though.
Great video. Thanks.
I was aboard years ago and met a gentleman who was aboard during the war. He was moving spent casings from one of the mounts.
Thank you for the video, i always wonder what the clean up after the salutes was like. Also dang everyones secret wish to fire shells into Fall River has been thwarted.
This is so cool!
I thought i remembered the 16" guns being fired for salutes.... i must be mis-remembering..... hrrmm... Mandela Effect....
I have heard of that before one 16 inch barrel was fired once while the ship was at battleship cove i also heard a bunch of windows were broken at the same time i believe this to be a rumor You would have to contact the Fall River Herald News for more info
Appreciate you guys doing this video, thanks. It was interesting and educational
Where are the controls for elevating and rotating the 5 inch guns? I didn't see anything in the video.
the pointer (elevation) sits forward and to the left of the left gun while the trainer sits forward and to the right of the right gun loading stations. When Tom pulled the lever to drop the breach block he was right behind the pointers seat.
Thanks GM1 from an old FCC. Please do more videos.
Beautiful work with the lighting!
Is the fwd engine room opened?
You need needle guns.
Such wonderful stuff!
Paul does a great job in these videos. He’s informative, easy going and has a good on-camera presence.
Milyen zene megy alatta?
August 8,2024 a '44-'45 crew member of the Mass. passed on. He was my father. At battle stations my father handled powder for the forward upper turret middle 16in. gun. I learned this gun was first fired to verify accuracy. Dad I miss you very much.
Nice job! You young folks are an inspiration.
Those ladies did such a great job.
Looks good
Great job, glad seeing the younger generation caring about these beautiful ships.😊
Nice work, ladies!
Good job shipmates.
I have been thinking for a few months now that when my son goes off to basic training, I will hopefully have time to volunteer now and then. Thanks for the video
Nice follow up, been on your facebook page for some time and can remember the start of this project.
Great video
What an amazing crew!
I was reading a book not too long ago about DesRon21, called Tincan Titans and it goes indepth of how ships like O'Bannon, Nicholas and Strong operating in 1942 how their captains and XO's developed what would become the CIC and that war experience led to it being fitted to ships later on. Quite fascinating on how this room was developed
Such an awesome ship. Too bad she’s the only one left. It’s a real pity the Newport News wasn’t saved and turned into a museum in her birthplace and namesake city. But at least we have one Des Moines class cruiser left.
Outstanding video
Love these videos. Thanks Tom and Dr. Scholes.
My Dad served on USS Newport News 1954-1957 and told me that during that timeframe her sonar was removed
Interesting as always - thanks!
Such great work! Great to see the museum ships working together
Awesome video, always good to see the Salem!
Great video with superlative content .Dr. Scholes certainly knows his subject matter. I look forward to your next video presentation.
Since Tom has worked closely with both 16"45 and 16"50 turrets, I'm curious if there was much change between the two?
This is so awesome! You guys are great
Ooo, a Kilroy pass. Twice as nice at a nice price 😊
Salem's design and engineering is absolutely fascinating, she must have been the highest of high technology when she entered service.
As to the switchboard, I've never quite understood how that system works as a whole. It seems like the setting in any switchboard would impact every other switchboard(i.e. different switchboards set differently connecting point Z to both points Y and Z), or that there must be a master switchboard somewhere. The situation I see this becoming an issue is if a damaged area switchboard is set to one setting, and there being no way to re-patch the system, around the damage.
Odd to see such a big bench vise in an "electronics" space.
My uncle served on the Indiana, Gunner's mate have one of the anti-aircraft shells on my mantle he passed in 2018
