    Interesting interview and very watchable. This interviewer is better than most I've seen. She's a throw back to old-school journalists who kept their own views to themselves - she asks great questions, and lets the guest talk. This is a style lost on most journalists today. Well done!

    I LOVE that he remembers the chic of people who were not just luminaries but also high school friends. What touches me most is his memory of his influential French teacher...and her dress...and her trips...and her slides. I have been lucky enough to encounter a hand full of great teachers who really were inspirations--sometimes mentoring directly, sometimes mentoring simply by example--and it really molded me! I had a Spanish teacher for two years. She was not a native speaker. But she and her husband were truly life long dedicated teachers who were interested in that life as a career that would make a difference. Every moment in her class was electricity. I knew they were not important classes in the grand scheme of things. But they were my treat--that little morsel of chocolate you keep hidden in your knapsack to get you through the hardest part of the day!

    Re: Diversity. I love how Andre Leon Talley said that we did not think of “Black versus White or any ethnic group” in the 1970s; we all mixed together and “just did what we did.” It is terrible how the focus today is on color and race versus “the work.”

    • @Hammerton32
      @Hammerton32 2 года назад +2

      Today's focus is on color and race versus the work? On what are you basing this?
      ALT may have said that he did not think of black versus white, etc, but he was well aware of color and race, or at least others' awareness of his color and race, in some of the hallowed halls of fashion and culture, in spite of his manners, in spite of education, and in spite of his work, and has documented such.

    What on earth is André Leon Talley wearing? He is a 1966 Hillside High School graduate in Durham, North Carolina raised in the Hayti section in the Bull City. However, his being a feminine gay man growing up in Durham in the 60's had to be very difficult in Durham because the Durham black community was very homophobic. I cannot imagine André Leon Talley dressing flamboyant at Whitted Junor High School and Hillside High School in the 60's because he would have been bullied and beat up. He never mention the name of the church his grandmother attended in Durham. Most of the well know Durham natives are buried in Beechwood Cemetery on Fayettevile Street in Durham. He seems like a very funny man and he would be the life at any party.

    Biiiiiitch!
    I was poised to follow closely on his footsteps. I was 18 and ready to leave ABQ.
    Out of my way, perras! One way bus ticket to NY!
    I was ready to fight for it. Claw my way to the top! The more people I had to step on the better. Exercise, bitches!
    But love showed up first in the form of Alan. We married. Had children. And lived happily ever after. Until not.
    But I digress. It’s not bout me.
    It’s about Leon.
    I forgot that it was an interview. It was awesome. He told us a story, gave insight, reflected. Approachable. I never heard him speak, just bits of stories from when he was on America’s Next Top Model.
    Inspiration is a catalyst to ideas, thoughts, actions. And he was able to pursue all 3...Adversity can make you or break you. What marks the person is how they deal with it.
    And you dealt with it with one big word SUCCESS.

    He has really changed since the 90s and i mean his personality because when i lived in Paris and met him on a regular basis, he was far from the gentleman he seems to be today . Every time i saw him, he was either drunk, high or just angry and blaming everybody for his problems or mistakes . And as for his manners with young boys like me (at the time),... well, let's put that on the fact that i was really naive back then, because if anyone did half of that to my son today , i'd have him skinned alive. He didn't molest me,don't get me wrong, there was never any sex (i was not THAT naive or hungry), but there were attempts to get close, and i was 17, fresh out of scouting and knew nothing about this world.
    This guy was obsessed with my family, because it is old French , British and Russian aristocracy , he was obsessed with the fact that one of my ancestors was Ninon de l'Enclos and Madame de Montespan and that this was the closest thing he had ever been to someone linked directly to Versailles and that my mother's maiden name is Rochechouart-Mortemart De la Rochefoucault (one of the oldest French family name) .
    Back in those days he was also very different regarding the US and African Americans .
    It is very interesting to see how his discourse has changed, but then again fashion has always been a reflect of it time and i guess he doesn't want to not be in vogue anymore. Pun intended.

      @morganolfursson2560 4 года назад

      @@rosnenu8148 Obsessed no, enamoured, yes, why wouldn't I be ? It is an exceptional lineage, one i am extremely proud of. Ninon may have been a woman of pleasure but with impeccable aristocratic lineage , and Madame de Montespan has a lineage and a status higher than the one of the Bourbons dynasty so not exactly a prostitute, just a courtesan of the highest status.
      I haven't mentioned even once my son's sexuality, maybe English is not a language you are comfortable with, but i suggest you read my comment again.

      @@Kaymeron No it is not, it is called humour. You people who get offended by everything are so damn hilarious. I'm inuit and Icelandic and gay and my name is Olafursson (nicknamed Olaf), you have no idea how many time i was told jokes about sucking a Mr Freeze or licking an Eskimo or do you need a carrot Olaf or called Elsa the snow queen. That's fine, that's called humour, and because i do have a life and do not enjoy whining i just ,.... wait for that one,.... let it go.

      @Angeliquelovely My mother has a few nicknames and she couldn't care less, she is not shallow like Andre and she has a far thicker skin. And more importantly, she has a life so she has better things to do and care about than what people call her.

      @Tony Turner This is not my aim at all. Quite the contrary. I value anonymity, it is a rare privilege among the truly wealthy.

    Europeans are not the only ones that pay great details to burials garments / rituals Africans traditions are beautiful and detailed as well , My issue with him is that he really acts like EUROPEANS are the epitome of class when it comes to this fashion thing smh . R.i.p

      I want to say, that he linked the European tradition to the African tradition that came up through the Diaspora through the Southern USA. But you’re right, he acts like that, but he’s not denigrating the African tradition. That’s just what he chose to study. It’s hard to nitpick, when he’s sitting there in his kaftan, like an elder griot in his boubou. 🤷🏾‍♀️
