Andre Leon Talley begins by talking about his family and how they defined who he is today. He mentions that from the age of 9 he was reading Vogue magazine, tearing pictures out and pinning them up onto the wall. He said his whole universe revolved around Vogue. After he graduated from Brown University he went to New York where the first person he wanted to meet was Diana Vreeland.
He made a surreal swimsuit out of metal discs for Diana Vreeland's office and was subsequently made into her assistant. He tells of many stories involving his time with Mrs Vreeland and he demands. He says that it was always a process of imagination pushing him to find a solution to all the creative problems he faced.
After working for Diana Vreeland he went to work for Andy Warhol at Interview magazine. He said work began at Noon and life started at 6 when he would go to all these amazing places with Andy Warhol's entourage. His first big interview was with Karl Lagerfeld in May 1975.

This man was a walking legend. A living library of fashion. People don't realize how fashion reflects history and the times we live in.
A LOT of people are walking libraries of fashion, and a lot of them are a LOT less self-involved. I always found him to be the Morgante of the fashion community, unaware of his role as entertainment for the truly chic. But anyway...
So amusing to wonder what these Oxford students make of Mr. Tally's wonderful stories from a world, I imagine, many of them consider to be frivolous and vulgar. Mr. Talley is actually giving them one of life's great lessons: one must discover the joy of living, the love of beauty, and uniqueness in people.
Well-said
Very well, indeed. Unfortunately...-or, fortunately, life is terribly more exciting than the bourgeois way at any rate. Hopefully, institutions such as MOREHOUSE, an Oxford or some tiny, tiny boarding school may just be poised to lead them down that path! #allegedley
Mr. Tally shows that one can come from any background and believe in oneself, persue ones dreams and begin at an early age to grow, and to prosper with a family be it small or large, rich or poor that assist in believing in those same dreams and supporting you and being there for you and telling you it can be done, that you are capable, that you are wise, that you can accomplish all that you wish to accomplish, that is how we as people make it. That is how we believe in ourselves. That is how we move forward in life. Sometimes we stop along the way, we take what I like to call detours, but we are still successful. Then we take up the fight and we start again. We remember our objectives and we fight the fight again. It can be difficult, but we don't give up, we know what our main objective is and we continue to fight. Their is no reason to quit, no reason to blame someone else, we know what we want to accomplish, it's our fight and we don't give in or give up. We keep on moving on no matter what, and the only thing that stops us is death.
@@riverruns477 happy to see an HBCU listed here!!
Probably not. He was very well respected in the fashion industry. I'm sure they loved his stories.
This was a great talk--an erudite discussion full of theatrics, pageantry, historical contexts, name-dropping, and life lessons. It was classic Andre Leon Talley. What a life! Rest well, fellow Brown Alum.
I could not have said it better!
"Isn't it fabulous? Say it's FABULOUS!" I'm taking that line and running into my life with it❤Rest in Style, Sir Andrê
An extremely well read, and principled gentleman. Style is a inherent quality - it cannot be taught ! It’s all about the person per se and nothing to do with race, colour nor creed.
We didn’t ask for all the extra shit you added on. This man was underpaid, overworked, and unappreciated within his respective industry…Had everything to do with his race!
@@miketyler346 absolutely. He has noone to blame but himself. Begging for Ana's attention to the bitter end. Sad.
What an elegant and incredibly engaging man. I could listen to his stories all day. Thank you Oxford Union for capturing this moment of his amazing life. May Andre Leon Talley always rest in style.
I can't believe people say such hideously rude & critical things. I LOVED Andre's book, his work, his stories, etc. He's amazing!
Ignorance
🇧🇦
Little minds. They are clouded with such negativity that they can't see his heart. No one is perfect.
One of my favorite moments with Andre! Rest In Power you absolute icon.
What I would give to sit at his feet and just listen to him talk! He’s such a marvelous storyteller and he has so much knowledge/wisdom to share.
Aweee
He's far better in this context than one would have expected---and his memories of Mrs Vreeland would have enriched the recent documentary film on her life, in which ALT was glaringly absent.
Relax.
agree he was so overlooked
I could listen to Andre talk for hours.
That was fabulous. I wish I knew of him when I was younger,. He has inspired me to be my best from this day forward! Thank you!
INDEED!
He remained proud of who he is and his background.....May his soul rest in peace.
It is to be admired of this man that of his public introduction, an acknowledgement of his team and the expression of his love for his grandmother, his family lineage and how the connection of faith and love inspired his life journey.
This was so refreshing to hear Andre's story I love him. I feel like I was with him in those days the way he told his story.
WHY??? I have stories that would make you NOT love him immediately.
@@bryantppierce Isn't that true of everyone?????
@@bryantppierce Spill the tea lol
Mr. Talley was full of great info, the audience.... Anyway he is a legend and should have been treated as such throughout his lecture. Thanks for posting this.
To have history taught by the man who had lived it is a blessing. At the Seat of my Elders.
That first shot of ALT shows him as he is - a larger than life fabulous God. Love.
Just amazing. To be regarded positively by ALT is a dream.
I would love for him to meet my family.
I don't know why a lot of people in this comment section are against the audience in this Oxford Union. If only you could pay attention to their body language and their gaze, you'd see that everyone there is very attentive and in awe to the stories Andre Leon Talley is telling and how he portrays them with his speech.
I love this man! So fabulous and he's lived quite the life!!
Seemed like a clueless and too young audience, his career is incredible. A true artist, the attention to detail and quality, impeccable manners, I think he is magnificent.
You haven't seen HardTALK interview on BBC. He is incredibly rude. Sickening to play the racist card to be nasty to others.
@@user-ut8gh7ww9y Bring rude is never right, but you don’t know what he dealt with prior to the interview with the BBC.
@@latoyahammond7229 still, he must behave or else stay at home.
@@user-ut8gh7ww9y I saw that interview. Andre got upset because the interviewer was trying to put words in his mouth. Almost as if he was trying to tell him what to think and say.
@@henrylockett2020 let him do his job. He is not there to please the guest. It is HardTalk. Else he should stay at home and remain shut.
I love listening to Mr. Talley speak about his life, influences, people, art, history! He definitely has STYLE! He is an INCREDIBLE storyteller! GIFTED GENTLEMAN!
I love him, I could listen to him talk all day...
A Brilliant man . Phenomenal raconteur and story teller . A Griot in the African storytelling tradition. RIP .
What an icon, he had a way of making the opulent sound so charming, just such an incredible storyteller
I could listen to him talk all day.
Not just fashion history is here... what a life he has lived!
The AMAZING Andre Leon Talley. Knowledge is power. What a treasure
From what I can tell from comments, it's either a love or hate relationship with ALT. It seems to be the same with Anna, Grace, even Diana Vreeland. Some people will always find it necessary to critique them! Loved his recount of experiences with Diana
I really enjoyed this. There was even a moment in which I teared up. The grandmother story was powerful. I did not meet my grandmother until after college. We were separated by a war--then an economic embargo--so I did not have that influence during my formative years.
Mr. Tally, an iconic fashion griot, a scholar, etc. I love this lecture! Thank you Mr. Tally for living your life true to Your fabulous Self! :-)
Very inspiring. Andre's address was spectacular. I love his mix of down-home storytelling and the fab life in New York, London and Paris; and just the monumental people he's known in the worlds of fashion, art, music, sports and pop culture. Kudos to following his dreams; definitely a life well-lived.
All this legendary fashion history!! Love Andre!!!
I loved how he rolled his eyes when the presenter, introed him. Its good to not be humble in places like this. Love andre!
Why did he roll his eyes? Was the intro bad?
Who could possible be bored in the presence of Andre Leon Talley whilst he tells story after story after story. May God rest his soul.
The impact Leon has on me, the way he inspires me just move me to the core.
Andre! ONE OF THE GREATS!
WHY??? I have stories that would make you NOT love him immediately.
Such a wealth of knowledge! His life story is a great movie idea
I have Love this Beautiful Man since I first saw Him !! He speaks so very eloquently and His story is inspiring ! He is Fashion !! I would give my eye teeth to sit and listen to Him !! The student's there are getting such a lesson, I hope they soak it all in . Andre Leon Talley, You are a Icon !! Bless You for sharing Your stories of Life .. Luv Ya !!
A true legend of hard work!
"Fashion is not art, it's hard work"
- André Leon Talley (1848 - 2022)
He should have had his own TV show with his fabulous friends as his guests!
Racist comments 😂🤣, these people can only dream to know the people he socialized with, to have seen what he has seen and lived like he has lived. He dethrones every stereotype with each poetic sentence he speaks,
# Unbothered.
I love his stories, he had a life I wish I could have had. Miss Vreeland was amazing would have been so awesome to know her. I am a nobody designer that is happy someone else lived my dream.
Wow! A lot of racists and haters on here, lol!! Don't be upset that this black man has had and is still living a life u only dream about, lol!. Seriously though, don't hate. Congratulate!!
LOL! Yes! My thing is, why are they here watching?
That's what racist do, lol they hate Black people but watch every move they make ,like they're obsessed with the culture.🤣🤣🤣
His life is one that I would not want! His life from a young age was nothing but living vicarious through the WASPY world.
@s 97 "Envy" is one of the most "DEADLIEST SINS".
A RACIST'S ideology is founded and based on this disturbance
of Psychological imbalance !!
Oh no Black people is one of my pet worships in life, I'm white I would like to be Black. racism is my pet hate.
An amazing story teller with an incredible memory. He lived a full life. RIP
I adore ALT. I listen fully to every word of his..
That was absolutely fabulous. I loved it. Thank you Andre.
He never bores, I listen to him for hours. Wonderful.
Andre is a true style icon and abetter of fine taste. A self made man who came from nothing and shoed how with hard work and passion, he overcame so many obstacles to get to where he is today. Andre is laser sharp, well versed on everything and speaks like a Duke.
This bring a new meaning to, ‘never believe everything you see on tv’ and for the better.
Love his clothes! He really looks like the Pope of fashion or something like that! So elegant and soft yet authoritarian! N he is an authority in fashion! All those ppl he met all the places He went to! What a wonderfull rich life! This man has live his life to the fullest and is so inspiring! I would have spected more reactions from the public but life aint perfect...his speech though i think it is! Bravo!
ALT is the ultimate Vogue. I love how his experiences are ultimate!!
The world's most interesting man. Unique.
WoW!! I love this life. I can hear him talk for hours.

1:35 André Leon Talley: "I´ll try not to bore you..." AS IF
Great man, not a negative word about anyone. So positive, love his attitude. Love him.
Someone should've asked the lady coughing to leave...

This is prue Brilliance, Mr. Tally is a living jewel.💖
He commands the room, and the other people in the room are just lividly upset, kind smile, but uuuuughhhhh! Bravo Mr. Talley you are a black icon, and we thank you for sharing your story. I will be showing it to the kids that I tutor, they need to know that dreams do come true, if you are true to yourself!
a prophet and a poet. a walking piece of art.
What? No Q&A footage? T^T Need More!
Absolute icon! Rest in power sir!
What a wonderful hour plus! I too as a little girl fell in love with fashion, however I was a tomboy and kept that part hidden. For me it was the Charlie perfume campaign and model. Rip🙏🏼
Most Sophisticated ! Pure Inspiration
He said "Isabella Blow was full of demons, but she had such a big heart". So oxymoronic, but the statement so defines the fashion industry!
The culminating is the X factor:
"No matter what you are and what you do in life, if you have a dream, pursue your dream, stick to your goal, even in Oxford; just be you, be what you are and be an original and someone will relate to it and respond to it and it will take you very far in your life".
Finally, SIP Andrea!
Loved this
Such a beautiful man. Rest in peace.
What a BRILLIANT MAN!!!!!
LOv e love love!!! A true Legend !!
Excellent!
Wow! This dude LIVED!!!!
i love this passionate talk...very natural..
I happen to learn about Andrea Talley while paroozing through "Garden and Gun Magazine." The centerfold article couldn't have come at a more perfect time, as I'm taking a "Cultural Studies" class for which I'm having to do an essay that presents "Discourse" or "Detourment" concerning Afro-American Legal Scholar Kimberly Crenshaw lecture about "Intersectionality."
In addition, there is a chapter in the textbook concerning "Racism" that ABSOLUTELY OFFENDED and ENRAGED ME, to the point that after reading about Andrea Talley, made me KNOW what I would be doing my final essay and semester presentation about! Andrea Talley is the PERFECT ROLE MODEL, as he is the COMPLETE REVERSE to what and HOW the two authors of the textbook "Cultural Studies" portray Afro-American men as.
THANK GOD the text book is at least 10 to 15, if not 20 years behind in contrast to the change seen in the Afro-American society, amidst the full scope from family life, to faith, to academic and financial career stability and success that Afro-Americans live today. Andrea Talley is remarkable proof of this, that it left me honored to get permission from my professor to do my class final about Andre Talley.
So thoroughly enjoyed. 🦋❤️👑❤️🦋
Bravo !
Talley never used the label ‘gay’ but essentially confirmed that he was bisexual and open to romantic relationships with anyone.
Clean white sheets drying on open air. If there’s a theme for Margiela’s Replica perfumes that is it.
Amazing Presentation…simply amazing 💥💥💥💥💥
I just love this guy, watching the doc and listening to the Audi book
Great history and experience always from Andrè. I must correct a comment though Travis Banton did the magnificent costumes for Cecil B DeMille's 1934 production of Cleopatra. Talley states Adrian as designer and film year 1939
I think he was talking about a theatre production, whereas you mean the movie?
Beautiful rip Andre❤
Magnificent.
i saw him in his fall collection "rain attire"... it looked like he was wearing a tarp for a Volkswagen!
MADE ME SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO INSPIRED!!!
