As an American who has been in choir and sung our national anthem I loved how she performed it. So many artists over sing it. She kept it pure and lively. Gave me goosebumps and brought me to tears. Just perfect.

Then, her escort said, "Right" and moved her upper arm forward, as she couldn't see the steps, and there was the "Right", Pause, "Right" all the way down the stairs. Gutsy, Gaga always makes her performances even more challenging for herself and all other singers.
So when you add in the difficulty levels: the cold, the pressure of having to at least be as good or better than her previous performance of this song, the dress and going down the staircase, and the fact that she did NOT lip sync it like other people have, it was truly a sensational performance. Georgina, I agree with all you say. And how many people would have dared to wear that voluminous dress and walk down a staircase?
I think you're right about the emotions of the moment. When she sang "The flag was still there" she turned to looked at the Capitol flag which was still there. Even after the insurrection that occurred at that very spot two weeks ago. But that flag was still there. I also heard it is very hard to sing outside in cold temperatures. Also one of the hardest songs in general.
Just like the times that song was written in! Those men holding up the flag died and risked dying to keep that flag standing up!! (There’s a great video here on YT that talks about it!)
We can't forget that it was absolutely freezing, so the intakes of such cold air would immediately restrict her and make this so difficult. It wasn't a perfect performance, but considering the weather, coupled with the sheer pressure of singing *that* song, she did great.
She is such a great vocalist and obviously really passionate about this particular performance. I do think we can kinda hear her nerves here, she sounds a bit sharp on certain notes and as you said, a bit muted sometimes, but who can really blame her? This is THE most high profile gig any musician can ever have. If anything, i commend her for actually singing this live. Even Beyonce, the personified self-confidence, lip synced during Obamas inauguration. Not blaming her at all either. Just goes to show what massive balls of steel Gaga has. Iconic, honestly!!

To the untrained ear she sounded amazing but I can see how she might have been holding back a bit, I've definitely heard her sound better. Her rendition of the national anthem at the Super Bowl a few years back was better. She was probably very nervous and emotional, not to mention it was cold. Not the best conditions to give an optimal vocal performance. She still did amazing though.

This is the best National Anthem performance I’ve ever heard! She is classically trained, and she respectfully stuck with the tradition version. Her voice was so powerful and strong! I am an American and I can tell you that we here in America are so very proud of her. She was obviously so proud herself for this opportunity, and it gave all of us goosebumps. The whole arrangement was changed. The song is normally in 3/4 time, and she kept changing the time signature with extra beats to the measure and it worked very well. She uses her body to act out the song. Turning to face the audience, looking at the flag when she said "our flag was still there.": I bet she directed her whole segment and likely helped rearrange the music. Wonderful!
