Best putting story I ever heard was Ray Floyd saying how he changed his stance and stroke because it made his back hurt when he practiced. He said that practicing is so important, that you must have a stroke that you can repeat over and over on the green. His book is great.

I love that you can now add "playing on tour" to your disclaimer! For me, it doesn't matter that you aren't a coach; what I am learning from you is approach and attitude, not fundamentals. We should all think and smile more on the course. Sadly, I know what kind of putter I am- overly emotional. I can sink putts and put long ones within a foot or so on the practice green, but when I am on the course, I leave them short or miss low because I'm nervous to go as high as I read.

A fun game my instructor gave me is a progressing scoring game. To start, a round is 18 putts, and it's 2 strokes to par. Level 1 is to complete a round of 18 putts at -2, all putts are 10 footers. Level 2 is to complete a round at -6, all putts are 10 footers. Level 3 is to complete a round at -1, all putts are 30 footers. This is the level I just got to, but after that it starts moving into chipping, where you start 20 yards away and it's now 3 strokes to par, and you have to finish +9. It progressively gets further and further away, increasing the difficulty every time, but it's been a really fun way to practice the short game.
You may not be a "personal coach", but having watched and enjoyed many of your videos, you have a terrific short game, and ANY advice you can offer is much appreciated. It’s not often that I watch an instructional golf clip to the end, (which might explain why my golf is so rubbish) but with your putting synopsis I was fully focussed and concentrating. More of these please. Move over David Ledbetter.

Solid advise...consistently practice consistency
it was around 1995-96 I switched from holding the putter normal to left hand low spent 2 winters putting inside, it greatly improved my putting. My buddy thought I was a good putter before and thought I was crazy, within two years he was saying you are a way better putter now. I found it took away all the bad putts and just made me more consistent and gave me more feel with the line and weight

98% of short putts don,t go in
My opinion is that green reading and speed are the most critical components of putting. I've played golf with technically correct putters who can't sink a putt and the gifted putter who can't miss a putt but is technically all over the place. The gifted putter can read greens and sense the speed of the putt.

I've never heard of the ear to ear thing before, ill give it a try. My putting has improved this year just by copying your stroke and putting on my mat while watching t.v. thanks Gen. Hope your game gets back on track today in Beaumont.

2.)Consistent and smooth stroke tempo.
3.)A putter akin to Thor's hammer.
I know I said hammer but you most definitely dont want a heavy putter cause putting is all about feel/touch.
If nothing else go to golf store and spend a hour or two just stroking putts. Different shaft bends, weights, shaft lengths, head designs and configurations, putter grips. Which one feels like it belongs to you, buy it. I believe there's a putter out there for everyone that once in there hands they will feel as if any putt is sinkable!

Chees Gen, we learn stuff from all over the place, for sure teaching pros are the best option but generally speaking we watch to learn, then practise wat we've learnt We just need to make sure w practice the right things, not what Fred or Anne said down the golf club

The actually is on the face of the plane and only appears on the ground which is an illusion. All strokes putter included take place on an inclined plane. As a result the putter head never travel “down” the line. It’s always on plane. Even the putter must accelerate through the ball. You will always feel the lag pressure.
A pendulum occurs on a vertical plane ; putter is on an inclined plane. A pendulum does no work and therefore is not a machine.
The incline plane is in itself a simple machine.

Great lesson Gen but how about talking about green reading skills. Lately people have been using aim point but I've played a long time and know that green reading is more important. Grain impacts speed and speed impacts your aim point. Uphill and downhill impacts depth perception of length plus most people have one dominate eye and the other has direction distortions that impacts your aim point also.

Yes.
People should look at Isao Aoki. The toe of his putter was way up in the air. His stroke was wristy. He hit every putt off of the heel of the putter, but he knew how his ball rolled.

How many golfers need to spend time on putting? All of us! How many actually spend time dedicated solely to putting? Very few. I am just as guilty!

Scientifically, the direction of a putt is 84 percent determined by the putter face angle at the moment of impact, and the direction is only 16 percent determined by the putter stroke direction. This ratio can be rounded to about 90 percent vs 10 percent. That is, the direction of a putt is 90 percent determined by the squareness of the putter face at impact, while the direction of a putt is only 10 percent determined by the direction of the stroke direction.
This means that if a putt is missed left of the hole, it is 90 percent sure that the putter face is closed at the moment of ball impact. If a putt is missed right of the hole, it is 90 percent sure that the putter face is opened at the moment of impact.
Most putter instruction deals with improving the putting stroke. Since putting stroke direction is only 10 percent important, working to improving putting stroke only improves 10 percent of directional accuracy. There is a need to improving the rest of the 90 percent by spending 90 percent of the time and effort in improving the squaring of the putter face at impact, as the squareness of the putter face at impact 90 percent determines the direction of the putt.
There are many ways to perfect the squareness of the putter face at impact. The first way is to determine the average squareness of the putter face at impact. Starting at a foot from the hole on a flat spot on the practice green, and make five putts. Continue to move farther from the hole until less than 4 out of five putts can be made in a row. Use the formula 10 divided by the distance from the hole when putts starts to be missed to determine the degree of error from perfectly squared putter face at impact. For example, if putts start to be missed at 5 feet, 10 divided by 5 equals 2 degrees off. That is, if a golfer starts to miss 5 feet straight putts than the golfer cannot square the putter face within 2 degrees from square at impact.
If putts starts to be missed at 10 feet, 10 divided by 10 equals 1 degree. the golfer cannot consistently maintain the putter face within 1 degree from being perfectly squared at impact.
If putts starts to be missed at 20 feet a lot, 10 divided by 20 equals half a degree. It means the golfer cannot consistently maintain the putter face within half a degree from squared at impact.
By getting the putter face less than half degree off from being perfectly squared at the moment of ball contact, long putts will start to drop at amazing frequency. However, putting distance control is also important, specially for breaking putts. That is another long story, which will not be covered here.

@@LightningDogg Long ago when I first stated to use the ball-name-label as guide-lines before guide-lines on the ball became widely used, by first pointing the ball-name-label-as-guide-line at the hole, and later having the label perpendicular to the hole to help increasing the precision of squaring the putter face at impact, one day one of the playing partners, who was a stranger, turned to me after his putt and said "it really works!" He was observing my experiments, and decided on his own to try and adopt the technique. Once in a match play against a fine player, I hit a low zooming tee shot to the par-3 that landed straight at the flag 30 feet short that checked up without releasing, and the ball did not roll up to the hole. The playing partner competitor started to comment to me about how the shot should had been played. After rolling in the 30 feet putt, the playing partner never said another word for the rest of the round. Mathematically, using the parallel lines axiom, a 30 feet putt is theoretically almost as easy as a 3 feet putt, if the putter face is perfectly squared at impact. This applies to chips and short pitches as well.
