*These cars don’t even compete with each other. The type R is in a higher class than the Hyundai.
*For anyone complaining about styling of the Type R, Honda is working on a civic hatch trim with similar range power output to the type r but with much more subdued styling. Most likely the wing will be toned down or removed. IMO I like the current one just fine, it’s a hot hatch, it’s supposed to look different. And the fact that the aero is functional it’s great.
*if they make the type r awd it would have some positives and negatives, when launched it will probably do 0-60 in under 5 seconds but I really do believe lap times on a dry track would get worse because of the extra weight. One thing the type r has over its competition is the weight. It beats the STI,RS and Golf R on the track, this has been tested by multiple media publications. I do think they should offer it though for the people that want it, I think it would increase sales a lot.
Final note. As much as people love to hate on Honda these days, they still make very competitive products, pretty much all their models are in the top 3 in their respective segments in terms of overall NVH,value, resale, power to weight and mpg. Each model is usually really good at doing what that segment requires of a vehicle.

I am also very certain that adding AWD to the Type R would not only increase weight but price as well. I don't think anyone would buy a Civic that is 40 grand, even if it is a Type R.

But what I find kinda funny about car people is that we say “ohhh the Lamborghini Huracan Performanté, Ferrari 488 pista, Bugatti Chiron, Pagani Zonda etc. are amazing looking cars and others and that aero, spoilers, wings, front splitters etc. are masterpieces, but let Honda what many would call “lesser car brands” make something crazy in its design everyone says it’s ugly like the type r, it was even the case with Lexus LC500 concept car and even the full production version, we all have opinions but anyways I digress 🤷🏾‍♂️😁

The mastermind behind this (Albert Biermann) including his team of engineers have executed this well on a first attempt. In his own words its about “good dynamic response” rather than outright speed/or impressive power figures . “Speed is just boring. It’s about the corners,” according to Albert Biermann. I'm a Type-R person, but that Hyundai is brilliant I'm really excited for the next evolution of it. The Civic impressed me in the wet too, it's the lateral grip that works wonders. You have to cope with more of the front wheels spinning if you put down too much power, but it won't let go in the corner in the way some would expect of something not AWD that will just bully the road until it lets the car go forward :)
I'm really delighted for Hyundai though. It is refreshing that, first there are new entrants to the hot hatch class, and second that they are shaking up the establishment.

I think this is one of the most relevant comparisons to date. The Hyundai is an amazing car, it's consistently out ranking cars in its class, and in some comparisons it's chosen ahead of the Type R because its performance is somewhere between the Fiesta ST, an amazing car btw, and the Type R. If you remember that you can tip the Fiesta ST into a roundabout at normal speeds and mess around with a bit of lift off oversteer, you can see the benefit in the comparison. The Type R is way to planted to be playful at normal road speeds. The Hyundai is also a lot cheaper. More on that in a bit.
The Type R though is magic. Literal magic. I get slightly annoyed when reviewers take something like the Focus RS (also brilliant) and like the fact it's skittish, unstable basically. The Type R is planted. It's also a nice place to be. It's not Audi RS3 quality, although the seat position is better, but it's 15k less than an RS3 if you want optional extras like windows. It's lap times are also much closer to the RS3 than the Hyundai is to the Type R. Even here, the RS3 is quicker in a straight line, but it's not quicker through corners.
And this is the thing about price. I have the Type R. I could afford an RS3, but would I enjoy it 15k more? That's 30 track days. 10ish nice holidays. I'm not wealthy enough for that to not be a consideration. So you can make the same argument for the Hyundai. Is the Type R 7k more fun? Is the Hyundai 5k more fun than a Fiesta ST?
The Type R was always going to win, but they are two cars I consistently hear people looking for a new car compare, and it always does a great job at representing itself against cars that are significantly more expensive.

My hope is that Hyundai builds a Veloster N and i30N tier designed specifically to compete with the CTR. If Hyundai did this, I think it would disrupt the existing pricing-performance ratio currently within this and similar segments. Further, Hyundai's willingness to warranty their track-oriented cars even with amateur track usage may result in other Makes reconsidering their warranties to our benefit.

I like where Hyundai put it, which is right in that sweet spot. If you're shopping for a new car it's just a bit more than the other models on the lot. Attainable. The problem with the arms race is that the R, RS, STI, and Type R, are that they are laughably expensive and complex. Wife recently bought a GTI, and it is just a fun car that she enjoys. It doesn't have to be crazy fast and insanely expensive to be nice & fun.

I'd have to literally lose my head to fit in (assuming the Type-R interior dimensions are the same as an Si - couldn't even find a Type-R to sit in when I was new car shopping). Here in the States, used Type-Rs are still going for $2-3K over MSRP!! I'll be settling for a used RS or STI for an $8K savings for similar or superior performance.
