  • Can the Honda Civic Type R see off the Hyundai i30 N and Audi S3 in a head-to-head track battle? Steve Sutcliffe sets a lap time in all three to find out.

    The 2021 Honda Civic Type R (FK8) is one of our favourite hot hatches of the moment, thanks to a super focused chassis, a rev-hungry turbocharged motor and one of the best gearshifts in the business. However, both the Audi S3 and Hyundai i30 N have the potential to cause an upset. The Audi brings brutal straight-line punch and imperious four-wheel drive traction to the table, while the i30 N comes equipped with a new, quick-shifting dual-clutch gearbox, which should shave a few tenths from its lap time. Does either have the talent to overthrow the Civic Type R?

    The Civic here is definitely the best drivers car, but I was looking for an auto, something that wasn't designed by a teenager and a car that I could order and not have to wait a year for so I ended up getting the i30 N DCT and love every bit of it.

    Great video but I'm courious if the driver used the NGS button on the straights or out of a speed bleeding turn when in the i30? Which mode did he choose? Which options did he pick or did he turn everything off? The i30 time could have been shaved by at least a second in my opinion.

    There are many straight acceleration sections on that track circuit. Therefore, a vehicle with high engine output (power) has an advantage in lap time. So, the i30n, which has the lowest engine output, seems to be a great vehicle with the most kinematically set-up. If... the engine output of the i30n was the same as the Sijik Type r with 300-320 horsepower... the i30n would have the fastest lap time. I think the i30n is more technically good and nice car.

    The awesome Civic Type R keeps winning track battles but haters/Fan boys keep making excuses: "yeah but, but...". Just accept that the Type R is a track weapon! That being said, it's not all about numbers - and a front wheel drive manual isn't as quick in a straight line from a standing start compared to dual-clutch auto AWD, we know that; you can't have it all - but the Type R is also a fantastic car to drive on the road. These battles are just a bit of fun - although, it is great to see a car you own do so well at them - but they are also an indication as to how well they go on the road. The CTR is great on the road, handles well, is so precise, comfortable and plenty quick. And engineering masterclass. And that gear-shift is outstanding. I couldn't care less if a car is front, rear, or AWD, it's how it drives etc that's important. If you prefer other cars. Great! If you want an AWD dual-clutch so you can race people at traffic lights. Great! Enjoy. The CTR is a great car to drive. The end.

    Tests should be done from a standstill at the finish line and to go for 2 laps (and then get the average) , that's more fair, as passing through the finish line at speed can vary depending on the car/driver, unless when passing the speed is the same for all cars, which may be the case but I dont know.

    Where can you get an S3 with comparable equipment to the N for the same price? The S3 costs around 60000€. The Type R GT costs 43500€. The N costs with full equipment 37000€ with DCT and as a manual 34500€. So Honda and Audi already suck at the price. And for the N DCT, there are also enough performance upgrades with TÜV, which are in the range at around +80HP for 1200-1500€. So you also outperform both competitors in the driving performance and still save a lot of money.
    Not to mention that the Civic drives with the better tires here in the test. The N and the S3 would certainly come close to the Civic by another second if they all drove PS4S.

      Hyundai use the softest of the 3 damper settings at the nurburgring and I was told by one of their track day instructors who has coached all the way up to F1 that the only circuit in the UK that you might find it better in the firmest setting is Silverstone due to it being pan flat for the F1 cars.

      @@bat33.12 What about on road, when you need to fully send into those corners, would sport or comfort be better for suspension?

    • @bat33.12
      @bat33.12 2 года назад +1

      @@hyphed4196 it really depends on the road surface if it's really smooth like well laid new tarmac then the front turns in quicker on the firmer damping settings and is more responsive but if it's a bumpy UK style B road then I would leave it in normal mode as it will hold it's line and not be deflected by bigger bumps. You have normal/comfort, sport and full N damping to pick from. It flicks nicely through roundabouts in firmer settings and the mid/sport setting feels close to a Renault Megane on cup suspension

    Love these track battles. Interestingly, same driver, same track, new Cupra Leon 300 posted an identical 45.7. Would have expected Civic to be slightly faster so maybe sport line trim does make a difference....

    • @Autoexpress
      @Autoexpress  3 года назад +7

      It should be noted that the Leon 300 posted that time on a different day - there can be a surprising variation in track grip if it's been raining beforehand, or if the surface has been rubbered in by other cars!

      I bet the CTR is faster round here than the Cupra, as it’s just more seriously track focused. The Cupra is a nice car though, and for daily usage I would choose it over a golf any day.

    Have to say i prefer the older shape i30n. I don't like the new rounder shape front end and headlights, the pre-facelift is such a handsome and agressive looking car. And manual gearbox please.

    bet he forgot to use the NGS though on i30N which should have given it more power and torque overboost.

      NGS only works to 4700rpm torque band you'll be sitting above that 90% of the time on track.

    i30N did terrific for the price. It is not 'similarly priced' to either the Honda or Civic. In Australia, they are 10s of thousands more. They SHOULD be better. They should be better by a larger margin considering the cost differential.
