Velostar N's debut is impressive to compete with Civic and Golf.
Will most likely be more reliable than a Volkswagen too.
Vernon Gamble VW tech here haven’t seen any issues out of the Rs thus far
Except for the guy who money shifted and over revved it and blew the engine buy that’s his own fault
I know some Hyundai techs and they replace engines all day long
R S that isn’t the case anymore.
Vernon Gamble NEVER😂😂😂 Hyundai is notorious for being shit lol
@R S just bought a veloster r-spec a few months ago, the warranty that comes with any hyundai is insane.
Really enjoyed this. Super content, guys! I bought a Veloster N last weekend because it is a great compromise between the Daily vs Track focused competition, AND because it's the bargain of the century. Have you heard that Hyundai has released notice to honor warranty claims even if the N is being tracked or auto-crossed? Bonus!
I have a Golf R, but I would happily own a Veloster N. Looks like a great car at a great price. I wouldn't touch that Honda for any price, however. Congrats on your cool car!
About that...did u have to upgrade to the next level of warranty for that?
@@shortroundChris no that’s factory warranty no upgrade
I bought one 2 days ago and I’m in love with it
The veloster’s suspension isn’t bad on the road. N mode is overkill though, even for most tracks.
Really is, I use mine in custom with the suspension on normal.

After owning a Veloster Turbo for a couple months, I was definitely rooting for the Veloster N in this video. Really surprised how closely it performed to the Type R! I just love how fun and unique Velosters are.
I dont have any of these but I love to see Veloster beating the VW!

What are you on about?
The Golf R is the most comfortable and easiest to live with... but the Veloster N and Type R show that FWD is not a handicap when it comes to performance. The smile I get when I push my CTR through a tight corner cannot be overstated.
Have you ever been on a road trip with a type r, it takes bumps like you are in luxury car in comfort mode. We drove it from Texas to Arkansas, and made 35 miles a gallon going 75 and 80 most of the way there, and the seats are so comfortable, but a little hard to get out of lol
It's so much fun. I want to daily mine so bad but I'm still on stock wheel and tires. Plus i work outside and I'm dirty when I'm done. Rather let my focus 3 door hatch 5 speed take the task. Its so boring though lol. CTR is too much fun
Fwd still is if you want much any more power than they come with, and test them out in say, rain or really cold when the sticky tires are out of there element. The golf still costs way too much though, even if it is the most "refined".
Golf R suffers from a lack of an LSD. those 2 other cars have them. Even the GTI has one. One reason why I went with a Canadian Performance edition Mk7 GTI with a tune. The R's AWD advantage disappears when exiting a corner when compared to a GTI with similar power and an LSD. If you're brave enough to void your warranty and install a wave track LSD on the Golf R it will hang with the Type R and Hyundai with ease.
@@drepop803 maybe bring a change of clothes to work? lol I would find a way to be able to ride the CTR as much as possible
I bought a Veloster N a month ago. Tried the civic type R, drove a GTI rabbit but no Golf R. Honestly, on the road the veloster was far and away the most engaging to drive. Civic type R was great but the dealer wanted 38k for the civic and 28k for the N. The civic just wasn’t worth the extra 10k to me. For 33k it would have been a serious contender though cause I loved the seats and driving position. N is better than GTI, no contest.
Congratulations man! I was hoping to get the N before the type R too! Honestly the amount of performance it has and it costs wayy less is amazing. Unfortunately I recently found out I can't fit in one cuz I'm like 6'7 at least and it's way too uncomfortable for me :(
Aamir Khawaja I’m about 6’3 and it’s a bit snug but I have a long torso and shorter legs. 6’7 is bit tall though, look at challengers if you want a sports car you can fit in. Crazy amounts of space for tall guys
Aamir Khawaja Not as much fun, but an RWD Stinger GT rings in at 36K and should fit you just fine.
Excelent choice 👍
9:05 - just gotta comment on the absolutely stunning background scenery of this track; those windmills really add to the aesthetic
I look forward to all up the work you guys do. and I generally trust you guys more than most of the other journalists / car reviewers. This was excellent. It's pretty much what I expected actually. I didn't think the manual golfer would launch that well though.
Look, some of you have laughed at Hyundai for a long time. Meanwhile, as an "old head", I have been doing my research. Since the beginning of this century, Hyundai has been slowly and quietly working it's way into the lineup with top-name car companies. They have their own foundry, and they also spent almost 200 million on metallurgy. I first bought a brand new top-of-the-line Sonata back in 2006. It had the 3.3 liter V6 that was pushing 237hp. It even had a sport-shift feature, but it would only make the shifts near redline. It could and would beat a base 525 BMW that had 227 hp. The ex traded it in with almost 140,000 miles, and it still ran like brand new. I currently have a Accent GLS as my daily driver. That one is about to turn 200,00 miles. It doesn't burn oil and it runs like a top. Due to the mileage, it was time to renew suspension, timing belt, and ignition parts. Now it's read for another 100,000 miles. I am currently at adding another high-performance compact to the garage, and all three of these cars are on the list. The bang for the buck is the N. Plus, if I want to void my warranty, I can do a few minor upgrades with the money saved, and beat BOTH the other cars. Don't sleep on Hyundai.
The Hyundai is cheaper and has a manual handbrake. That alone makes me interested. But the type r is supposedly more comfortable. That electronic brake makes me skittish even though I drive a regular civic right now.
Maybe Hyundai's sports cars are good but every single person I know who got a Hyundai as there first cars because they are dirt cheap all suffered greatly, the accent after only 90 000 had issue going up a normal uphill road barely making it ar 70km/h. Back suspensions just broke on all 3 of them one was my sister's, an other my cousins and last one was one my friends accent. There cheap, bad reputation is deserved just as much as any other car company because all of them have there faults.
@@Speedether Probably because they do not maintain them. I'm on my third Hyundai and never had any major problems. Letting things slide can do that.
@@pointsur67 you can think that but looking online and peoples opinions it's very clear that you are the exception.

The Veloster actually has closer to 290hp.
The Hyundai engineers designed that GDI engine to be able to take advantage of running 93 octane.

Love the channel and your insight! Purchased a Veloster N recently and it was a fantastic decision. Thanks for the help making that choice 🙏🏻
How is it a year later? My wife has the 2.0 Premium but wants something faster.
I had the pleasure of renting a Type-R (Euro spec, +10 hp!) for 4 laps of the Nurburgring. Not only was I blown away by the entire experience of driving all out on a proper race track, but the Type-R was SO much faster than I expected! Hondas aren't really my thing, so I was out of touch with what the car might be able to do, but it was literally the most fun thing I've ever done in my life.
Note: I went there to rent a Renault Megane, being in my price range and one of the few manual gearboxes. Track day came and they said it wasn't available so they upgraded me for free to the Civic. I was disappointed at first, but it was ~$200 and 50hp worth of upgrade, so I didn't complain.
You did well, Honda type r is such a better car than megane and more power too..
Hondas are the real deal my friend…
The veloster for the money and overall a fun quick car !! Love it !!!! 😎💪🏼👏🏻👏🏻

@@Newzchspy My last car was MK7 GTI with APR stage III w/Golf R turbo. Great car, fast, not as fun as Vel N. Rattled and squeaked everywhere. Vel N may look and feel cheap inside, but at least it's built solid. I am very happy with it.

Still have my reservations :-)
I owned an MK7 Golf R, and a Focus RS. The Golf was more practical, comfortable, and reliable. But even with mods it was just boring. It's a very clinical car that is good, but doesn't seem to have a soul. The Focus RS was so much more fun but very unreliable and it will likely be my first and last Ford. Right now I have a modified (tuned, exhaust, coilovers) ND Miata Club that may just be the best car I have ever owned. But as a complimentary car I'm really thinking the Veloster N would be a perfect garage mate for the Miata... hmmm..
I have a 2017 Golf R and I completely agree with you that it's clinical, to use your words. But I happen to love that about it...? But I would happily save close to $10k and own that Veloster. The Honda is just too damn ugly to be seen in.

I drove a Veloster N today. My friends keep saying the interior looks bad, but I didn't even notice it while driving, the experience was almost overwhelming because it touched all my senses. And the shift lights, you have to experience them to believe how cool they look when you're ripping it. It was my first time driving manual in years, but I didn't stall once (rev matching off), very forgiving car.
I test drove a manual Golf R and it was the first manual I have driven in a very long time. It also reminded me how bad my knees are, and how any enjoyable driving engagement wouldn't be worth the amount of pain in local traffic. Ended up buying a Veloster N DCT. I love the interior personally. Very minimalist.

@@TWOhype23 It is, I just wish it was cheaper. I’m looking at getting a new car. Manual with AWD. But the Golf R starting at 45k I can’t do that! Especially with the ridiculous APR.
I’m looking into a new WRX Premium. 34k with all the options I’d like. Not a Golf R. But it still gets the job done!
@@destruxandexploze2552 yeah they are definitely expensive but they also come loaded compared to a WRX from what I’ve seen. Although I’ve never personally driven a WRX myself, so I can’t say how it rides.
I currently drive a 2019 GTI Rabbit Edition. And although it might not beat everything on the road, at least I can say I have 1 of 250 (in my color & transmission) in the world.
I have no doubt the Type-R is brilliant on track but they come from the factory with much stickier tires than the other 2.
I would love to see all three on a control tire to see if and how that changes the results - if the Golf can make better use of its AWD, if the Honda still takes it with its focused suspension and lighter weight and if the Veloster can take (even) better advantage of its further weight advantage.
This is the perfect idea! It would actually let the cars shine on an even playing field for what they are. But the stock tires on a golf R are complete trash. Not sure what comes on the Hyundai but it probably isn't what the Civic is working with.
VW is to blame. Why they pick the craziest tires for all their cars is beyond reason. My R32 came with some Dunlop AS that were sheer trash. Terrible performance and bubbles from every possible contact with any curb. The type R is the best car as this is how Honda intended it to be outfitted.
most channels and magazines get these test all wrong because they try to hold up the std of "from the factory" all the damn time. These are most of the time press cars and many people get to flog them. All VW and other companies need to do is offer a package with good 180-200 TW tires. But yeah. add some tires and a track alignment to the Golf R and it should not be loosing by much to the Type R.
veloster has the best tires
Type R comes on ContiSportContact 6 which is a road tyre equivalent to the Pirelli P Zero on the Veloster. :) The Golf R would come with the ContiSportContact 5P which is the same SportContact series but an older model, or sometimes the Potenza S001 (VW have a tyre 'lottery' system, where you don't get a specific tyre, but instead a random brand depending on production cycles).
And to think the golf is even FASTER with the automatic. What a car, man
Did you watch the part on the lap times? LOL

The Civic Type R would get more love if it wasn't so over-styled and goofy looking. My eyes! Good thing I never go to a racetrack, so I can buy the Golf R and be more than happy in the real world.
Agreed, track comparisions are very overrated for real life driving.
Put a bigger anti sway bar on the Golf R, done. I have a 2008 R32 that plowed like a dump truck in fast, tight turns. Put a bigger anti sway bar on the rear, now the car is perfectly neutral, going very fast in tight turns, with nose turn in off throttle. Completely transformed the car. It just needs about 100 more horse power because it is really heavy. Really like that Civic Type R though.
Imo, I would take the N
Just a tune in the golf r and its hunting super cars! You guys should have tested with the dsg and launch control, it's quite a bit quicker. That EA888 platform is amazing!
An engine tune is not going to make the Golf R handle better! You need to rework the swaybars, the dampers, the springs, wider wheels, the R doesn't have the aero (the splitter & rear wing) which the GTI Clubsport has, you need the Recaros from the GTI Clubsport too -- it's a lot more than a retune needed to bring the Golf R up to spec.
You guys do great work and give great consumer advice for these types of cars. Keep it up
Amazing video guys! Great sense of what factory spec cars can do. It would have been nice to see them on control tires though. The Type R’s sticky rubber contributed to the blowout on track. It also contributed in that turn in you praised so much, but you can’t argue that it isn’t the most potent car here. I’m also a firm believer the Golf R’s secret sauce is DSG and that it simply can’t be beat as a daily.. Period. Put some sticky rubber on it and it’s a legit weapon. Lastly I’m stunned with the i30N. I love that Hyundai was able to put together such a raw driving experience in this day and age. Keep up the good work fellas!

It's a very good seat for dailying (even though it's very basic fabric) and it breathes well in heat. The electronic lumbar support in it makes a huge comfort difference, and it's decent bolstering for performance driving. That said, the CTR's seats are so much, much, much better for performance driving. The more I watch their videos the more I like them ! Because I drive mostly (like most of us) in daily mode, I would buy the Golf R but god damn I love the sound of the Hyundai, I would love to test it one day. I’m not a fan of Honda but I have to admit, it’s really a great machine and it’s about time they bring back a real sports car.
Thomas is a beast of a driver. Absolute monster.
Hyundai would be my choice, they really out did themselves. 1st time out and they are being compared to some of the best. Albert really did a great job for Hyundai.
Glad you actually chose all of the cars to be properly manual unlike most videos featuring golfs. It must of been a properly long day of filming and editting going out on multiple laps on the circuit in each car. Right as Thomas was prefacing the Honda Civic Type R's best lap time, I was expecting it to come out last because of the aforementioned less than ideal/poorer grip conditions on this shorter circuit track, but to hear that it was Five seconds faster than the awd golf r almost sounded silly at first. Good shout from the both of you and it really puts into perspective the huge amounts of effort and hard work Hyundai and Honda put into making fully realized livable and practical Manual FWD racecars. Especially now more than ever because the Subaru's WRX STi and Focus RS/St hatchbacks are gone, and Any performance Mitsubishi Evolution or Mazdaspeed dreams are long dead in the water. Toyota also doesn't look very interested in beefing up its lukewarm Corolla Hatchback into a true Hot Hatch halo car fighter either.
No, supposedly Toyota is doing a proper Gazoo Racing version of the Corolla within the next couple of years.
I just bought a 2016 Veloster turbo and it is fun to drive with 201 hp I can imagine how the Veloster N is wow
I was a Honda guy growing up (Thanks Dad!! RIP 2023), and as exclusively a Coupe driver (Also, thanks Dad), I am going with the Veloster N for my next car, as it is the only FWD Coupe in this video (suicide door doesn't count).
I currently drive a 2016 Kia Forte Koup SX (essentially a better Honda Civic Si), but went from a 2003 Civic LX Coupe (my first car for 7 years), to a 2012 Civic Coupe EX-L (my dream Civic. Metallic Gray, added Fog Lights, and Interior Lighting myself. Totaled in a damn blizzard), to a 2010 370Z, to a 2016 Veloster Turbo for a month (Totaled. Not my fault), and now my 2016 Kia Forte Koup "Si".
I baby my Forte SX like crazy, but am SO looking forward to buying a Veloster N here in the next few years.
2 doors is all you need, and if someone says otherwise, tell them to buy a fucking minivan.
Looking forward to a Golf 8 R comparison!
Golf 8r is amazing it has a drift mode
Awesome comparison. So glad you got the manual transmission in the Golf R too, proper comparison. Hoping for a Porsche track video soon!
Parker Walls me
Too lol
I have a 2013 civic si and that 2nd gear crunch is a huge pain in the ass. Especially when you’re blasting onto the highway to cut someone off and second gear is all “nope”
Really good stuff. Loving this format.
Easily the best car review channel on RUclips. Proudly Canadian!
For how much less it costs, I'm surprised the Hyundai was only 3 seconds slower than the Type R. That's pretty impressive.
3 seconds slower is a humongous difference on track. If they run 10 laps, the Hyundai is a half a minute slower
@@poolplexer facts.
3 seconds on a track is still big. And besides there are other little things that justify the Type R's cost over the Veloster N....like it's race style seats, Brembo brakes, chassis design/engineering, etc.
@@fsdude77 true but I look at it from the point that the Type R is bracket (basically) to compete with the Focus RS. The Velestor N, isn’t. So for not really being in the same class I expected it to do worse than it did. If they added features and engineering and ended up bringing the cost of the Velestor up to $40k like the RS and Type R, I would expect more out of it. I expect a more costly performance vehicle to perform better. If it doesn’t, everyone that buys it is getting ripped off. The Type R doing that much better justifies the cost if someone is looking for that level of performance.
@@caps741 no, rs and everything else is built to TRY and compete with the Honda type r..
I fucking love your channel my dudes! I watch your uploads as soon as I see them. Your content deserves many more views!
Thanks!
I've got a 2017 Golf R. It's a heavy-ass car. With the AWD and the higher quality interior and tech, I'm sure the Golf R outweighs the Type R by a couple hundred pounds.
However, it's worth noting that the DSG transmission on the Golf R would have made for an even more lopsided drag race, and would've definitely shaved a couple seconds off of each lap. The stick shifter in the Golf R is mushy and useless. That drag race was already a murder fest by the Golf R, but with a DSG and launch control, the gap would've doubled.
Furthermore, while I know every car can be "tuned", it's important to note that a simple ECU tune takes the Golf R from 288 BHP to 350BHP on pump gas. It transforms the car into a completely different car for under a thousand dollars. We're talking 0-60 in 4 seconds flat. And yes, I'm sure the Hyundai and Honda have tunes available for them as well, but I know for a fact that the Honda engine is just about wrung out for as much juice as it has without adding hardware, whereas the Golf R magically unlocks over 60BHP just by sticking a laptop into it.
Price... My Golf R was $40k USD. The Honda is stickered lower by a few grand, but I'm still seeing markups on them that make them more expensive than the Golf. The Honda is an absolute bargain at sticker, but over $40k is stupid for that car.
Styling... My Golf R looks like a $20k car, which is exactly why I love it. Hell, even the $25-30k GTI looks crazier than the Golf R. But that's not what the Golf R is about. It's not trying to win over STi and Type-R fans. It's a baby Audi (identical drivetrain to a $50k+ Audi S3). It's low-key, refined and unassuming. The Type-R is just too much for me in terms of styling. I love the Hyundai and I love the STi, so I'm A-OK with crazy looking cars... But the Type-R took a huge leap from "crazy" and face planted right into "ugly". The fin is atrocious, the fake vents are stupid and worst of all is the 3 asymmetrical exhaust tips. It makes me want to vomit every time I see it.
All-in-all, I agree with their fine assessment that the best overall value is the Hyundai and I would happily own that car. I LOVE my Golf R for being the best all-rounder (and the red light king of the bunch, especially with DSG). I bet that Honda is an absolute blast to drive. In fact, I bet it's way more fun to drive the Type-R, especially on a track, than my Golf R, and for that reason, I can understand why some people love the Type-R... But we don't live on a race track. We drive city streets to work and back home 5 times a week, and that's when the Golf R shines. But yeah, to save $7k+ and have a handsome, manual Veloster N would be just fine in my books.
Throttle House, I doubt you read all that, lol... But once again, you guys are my favorite car channel on all of RUclips and I especially love all the hot hatch segments! Cheers, guys!
Great job. I love the hot hatch category. You guys took what would unconveyable by reading specs in a magazine and conveyed the visceral part of it which is what it's all about. Thanks guys. When my 2011 Mini Cooper S bites the dust I'm buying a Veloster N. Just wish the dash was all analog.
Veloster n is really incredibly surprising me.
Best sounding stock hot hatch made I would say, but I own a 2013 R that I can't let go lol
Do another with the new Wet DCT VN and you’d be even more surprised , it’s fast than the manual especially with NGS engaged
Hyundai did such a good job with Veloster N. They should make more N cars in their line ups. I want to see Genesis G70 N in manual.
Why haven’t Honda fixed the gearbox issue on the 2019 model!?
ITs not an issue, let it bed in, unlike the dsg issues and gearbox issues on every golf
Frag Zilla lol there’s no such thing as bedding in, the gears are build to mesh with each other. It’s an issue and should be resolved. I don’t know of any manual car that requires a “bed in” and at 40k it damn well better not need too
That velostar n stock exhaust is just such a winner
I’m surprised that you were able to get a drag strip win out of the Golf R mt. Congratulations on that.
I’m in the process of buying the Veloster N right now and I can’t wait to drive it!
@2:04 thought it was a supercharger whine for a sec 😂
Golf R for sure!❤
Watching videos like this right before I go buy my Veloster N really get me even more pump up
Did you get it?? I’m looking into buying one too it’s just hard to find them here in California!
@@supertin32 yes! Definitely a neck breaker since people don’t know what it is
@@supertin32 There was one in Gilroy California
I wonder how people will look at these cars in 10+ years. The old ek civic type r and dc integra type r are iconic. The resale value should be good with the current type r
The Veloster N really is the best bang for the buck Hot Hatch on the market- You won't be disappointed at all-
thanks fellas, that was fun to watch! cheers
Thomas and James rule!!
Love my Veloster N ,great job 👏 fellows
I’m curious if the Golf R could’ve kept up if you threw the same set of tires on the Civic TypeR onto the Golf R 🤔
I definitely think it could
The Clubsport S would have been a better rival to the N and Type R.
Clubsport S isnt available in North America
I never thought I'd consider the Golf a good looking car...until it was next to these other two.
I still dream when I can find the white type R.... but the Mk8 golf is coming and I think VW should be able to learn from focus Rs and type R
VW doesn't need to learn shit about hot hatches. They INVENTED the hot hatch and every other car is an imitation.
Civic type r is more practical, easier to maintain, the same if not better comfort than the golf R, just a lot faster on a circuit.
Golf R however has a very powerful engine especially with tuning.
I own a Gti and I don’t feel any more luxurious or more comfortable than when I was in a Type R.
nathan langford no they don’t need to learn about hot hatches, they need to learn to build a fast car
@@natelan69420 Rubbish, the Alfa Romeo Alfasud came out before the Golf GTI. :)
@@TassieLorenzo Ahh, yes, they very well known and loved Alfa Romeo Alfasud... The origin of the hot hatch, as everyone knows...
/s
Just make sure you get the manual transmission in the Veloster or you’re gonna replace the DCT every 60k miles.
You guys nailed this! Bravo.
Just buy the GolfR and live happily.
...while it's under warranty.
That Hyundai with an xtra 25 hp might give the Type R a run for the money. Maybe also with the same size rims and tires as the Type R it can match it
No one can compete with the Type R
Golf R insuperável 👏👏👏👏👏
Great content guys !! I'll be watching more of your stuff 👍
who is the third driver?
golf R 👍👍
I'd buy the Golf new, or the Hyundai used in a couple years. If you're the kind of person that buys a new car every couple years, the Golf may actually be the cheapest TCO, because of the much higher resale value.
