I just got my Veloster N a couple days ago. It's such a unique car it's hard not to be impressed by this thing every time I fire it up. It's far from the most powerful thing you can drive but the way it dives into corners and grips is absolutely insane and that total opposite experience of the BMW 335i I traded in for it. My BMW was a monster but I honestly believe the Veloster N would give it a run for its money on a road with a lot of bends. Who knew my first M car would be a Hyundai!
Yeah, simple format, intro cars, lead/chase, roll race, lap time, summary. The hosts make the channel, they're fun, knowledgeable, and don't over hype. Great videos!
I just gotta say, you guys are awesome. In every video you have such fun, authentic interactions and truly seem like you're having a blast. My favorite channel on RUclips. I just want to hang out with you! 😂
Awesome video showing the extended capabilities of both cars. I love my N...the CTR is kickass as well. Anyone considering a fun and relatively affordable car should definitely take both for a spin IMHO.
@@VaunShiz The Veloster N has faster power deliver than the CTN. Lots of drag races have shown that, where the N ends up several meters ahead of the CTR in just a second or 2. The CTR just maintains its velocity for longer while the Veloster N starts accelerating a lot less past 3rd gear.
My friend has one and it's amazing. Don't know what to say it's just a fun quick little car and when I drive it (he's brand new to manual) I get STUPID gas mileage like probably 30-35 MPG
I like this comparison. Somehow people still think that the Veloster N isn't a real hot hatch. This just confirms how potent it can actually be when driven hard and making small alignment changes that help improve track dynamics even more. This is even with Honda's trick front suspension geometry that almost eliminates torque steer. Both cars are impressive. I do prefer the looks of the Hyundai better than the Honda. However I have always been a huge fan of Honda's so normally I would lean my bias toward the Honda. This makes me look at things differently though. Simply because I really enjoy the looks of the Veloster more. I also think the Civic is over styled, over the top and bit of a spectacle rather than an actual beauty. I think it isn't going to age very well, but I could be wrong. Still, I would love to have either car. I just wish that Hyundai would bring over the "i30 N" instead of just giving us the Elantra Sport with the 1.6 turbo. Incase anyone isn't familiar with the i30, it is just the Elantra with a different name in other markets. However, the i30 N gets the same blue paint highlights that the Veloster N gets and it comes with the same engine as well. So imagine a Elantra Sport Hatchback with the same performance as this Veloster N. That would be a much more direct comparison to the Civic since both would be 4 door hatchbacks and both would be turbo 4 pots pushing great numbers compared to stock, using mainly tuning and a couple small upgrades for flow.
Awesome video. You guys have quickly become my favorite channel. I'd love to see a budget (sub $5K) car battle using cars from the early to mid 2000s. A lot of cheap fun out there. Here in CT (along with other states) the annual car tax and emissions testing keeps many folks out of more modern/higher dollar car scene. I always find myself scavenging the interwebs searching for a different favor of fun over the usual Miata or Subaru build. Something that's engaging from a visual and engine sound perspective as well as driving experience. Maybe a VR6 VW test vs ...?
It’s kinda weird how people want fast track focused cars like the type r when they are going to drive on public roads 99% of the time. You’d want a street car like the Hyundai with a thousand configurations and that exhaust note.
The Type R can also be a daily family hauler as it will comfortable hold 4 full sized adults, has more cargo space and has a much better ride on the streets.
They both are pretty equal as far as the track and street aspects. Both turn up and down well enough with the suspension and engine modes, even with the limited settings on the type-R. The only thing with the Type-R is you don't get a loud option, where the Hyundai is always loud (unless you get the performance pack with the active exhaust then it's whatever you want.. which is why I got that one). Really though, you can't fully use either car on public roads but you can use enough of it that they're worth having over a lower model if you like driving more than you like being comfortable.
@@doublestack0053 the type r rides like shit on the streets. You almost have to change it to 18in rims. At least where I live. No one here can run stock rims without destroying their back.

What was the CTRs alignment? Stock alignment vs track alignment on the N (~3 degrees up front) is literally no comparison. This is a big difference I think should have been further addressed in the vid! Especially on a FWD platform where understeer is the bane of speed
I was actually thinking the same, that corner entry isn't directly linked to that alignment? aggressive camber, and perhaps a tad of toe out? Then again I'm a rather newbie at lapping.
@@abhisheksakpal484 I am still in the break in period , but I am impressed with the DCT so far. I have a good friend who has a 19 N and I had a chance to get a few hot drives in the Mt roads and I love the way it carved up the roads. The thing that is a different is the way that I am noticing that I am doing 70-80 mph and it is completely different from the Abarth at the same speed. At 70 you feel like you are going 70 . The N at 70 I feel like I am going 45-50.

This means no Type R even SI!(expensive asf). Then I found the Veloster's 'new, clean/sharp/trim' after ignoring the Fugly prior version from 2013-2016. U MUST at least get the turbo trim, it looks and comes with more features and amazing warranty which i use alot. I get 28.8 Mpg, after 6.8k miles (trip) from average to rippin it ;) but without using sport mode/high revs easy 36-42mpg. Why is it everyone on RUclips like to give the Civic an advatage all the time. It would seem to me that giving both cars the same hp and tires would be more even. It would show how good the chassis work. Honda with a 70 hp advantage on this comparison with a huge brake upgrade also made to the Honda also is a joke. Maybe the same brake upgrade done to the Hyundai, instead of talking about a brake pad change.
People can't handle the embarrassment. Its a buncha keyboard warrior nonsense, the veloster N had way less money in it and all you hear are excuses driver, camber cry me a river. Funny because a stock ctr doesn't seem to have much push , understeer. But hey everyone knows the Hyundai whooped some honda ass.
This comparison has already been done in road & track last year ... R&T issue where VN won PCOTY award. The VN also beat the STI in the same article. Neither of the Subarus turn in nearly as well as VN. The VN was engineered to be an entry level track car ... not just a hot hatch.
I agree 100%. My wife has a type r and we both hate the clown car wheels.... looking to correct this with some 18’s (although I’d rather go with 17’s....) just concerned about potentially inducing torque steer with the smaller wheels.
Robert Rishel it’s not bad, if you run Hondata it really helps with the torque steer. 18’s would be the way to go. 17 will be too small, a lot of people go 19’s as well. Just to get more meat on the ground.
You do have to keep the offsets in mind if you want to replace the stock ones. Road and Track did an article on how the Type R's front suspension is dependent on having wheels with the right offset in order for it to handle well. Going lower can make it worse and introduce more understeer. www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/buying-maintenance/a25683452/smaller-lighter-wheels-hurt-handling/
Adz1086 h huh, stock yea but modded those flat engines start blowing up, go to a track sometime and you will see, they are probably fine on the streets
I didn't mention stock Frs, modded ones hold up really well, full bolt ons n/a, my 2013 with 60k miles is full bolt on & e85 w/oil cooler, gone to Sebring and the Firm here in Florida countless of times and have had 0 problems. Even boosted they hold up fine as long as you don't go past 350whp, speed academy's Frs is a good example of it, they've had the same car since 2015 if you've been following them for a while and the only problem they've come across is the blown diff they had recently and that's done countless of laps on TMP as well
you do a track alignment on the type r as well and i feel like this would be a lot closer. that N transitions so well. I would be curious for @speedacademy to test the type r with this set of tires and the OE continental. see if there is a special noticeable difference!
Modded cars are always tough to compare - especially when put together by individuals of varying skill/resources/experience. Glad you mentioned the meth injection at the end. Big helper for consistency on turbo cars running pump gas. Hard to draw too many conclusions since the variances between cars (brake pads, meth, alignment) are significant for track use and could sway the lap times in either car's favor. Still, the N is a great value and Hyundai has come a long way - don't think it knocked the CTR off its perch yet though.
They purely doing an underdog slower car support thing here.. it's not cuz its better or faster. also hard to make a fair comparison once people start doing this many mods.
If you're buying a brand new car you're doing things wrong to begin with. Buy something a year old with 1500 miles on it, like I did with my Veloster N and my Focus ST before that, and you'll save a ton of money and you can do more mods! 😊
People don't give the JB4's enough credit.. As a piggy back ECU it's totally legit and just remove before dealer visits. The JB4 in the stinger / G70 makes them a monster (+100 hp / 100lbtq) as well as the Supra (+80hp/+80lbtq).
I would like to see what having way more front tire and aggressive offset would do for the Type R - my guess is that you could go significantly faster - like a 265 Hoosier A6 on a 10" rim
Thought you guys should have swapped cars and rerun the lead/follow runs. Sorry to say it, but I think JP is just a better driver as seen by the Type R's faster lap time.
Oh come on you can't deny 70 more hp and only 4 tenths of a second faster. Swapping or not the veloster N has done very well and a piggyback system he can still keep his warranty. If he does a hybrid turbo upgrade that type R is beat even in the roll race.
@@nstylemotorsportsracing1471 i The N has 30 more ft lbs of torque though and TMP is tight enough that you won't see the benefit of that extra hp. In the end it doesn't matter though man. I think the N has more potential to be a better car when modded. That's why its TCR form performs so much better than the competitors. For the Type-R, it looks like it has the perfect balance in its stock form and that's where it shines the best against the competitors.
The TCR cars are heavily regulated for weight power everything, they are intended to be close so it's more driver, they have also poured tons of money into everything else, where I live TCR Honda's are outperforming the Hyundai's The Honda is way ahead as a factory car.. i have seen many now totally ass wiping similar tuned i30's at the track as this video shows... its no contest.

Dont forget. These vehicles have a nearly 10k difference in out the door price 😉
That price difference is insane regardless of how many goodies the type R comes with. It cannot justify that much of a price gap.
@@jerbsherb4391 I called local dealers about the CTR and they all said they wouldnt accept offers of less than 55-60k after markup (For a base model). So i ended up with a VN and love it lol. So realistically in some scenarios were seeing a $20k+ difference in these cars out the door lmao
@@tedweiss5702 Lol what, 50k+...? Even with the inflation in prices for all vehicles atm, that high of a markup is not really happening that much anymore. There are many ways to get these around msrp, people aren't truthfully trying hard enough to find them.
@@TeamFoxGG I literally called my local Honda dealerships to get an idea of pricing two weeks ago. They said they have at least a 25k markup on MSRP and they wouldn’t accept any offers under 55k. I also made sure to ask “this is for non LE models correct?” And they told me yes

Custom intake and downpipes looks like someone spray painted PVC and clamped it together. Love it. Track cars yo

I am still in the break in period , but I am impressed with the DCT so far. I have a good friend who has a 19 N and I had a chance to get a few hot drives in the Mt roads and I love the way it carved up the roads. I am coming from a Fiat 500 Abarth tuned and suspension tweaked. The N is a much better platform . The thing that is a different is the way that I am noticing that I am doing 70-80 mph and it is completely different from the Abarth at the same speed. At 70 you feel like you are going 70 . The N at 70 I feel like I am going 45-50.
@David King interesting, I read at other forums as well that it may seem slow because it is so composed. Which explains your experience with it.
How about the pops and crackles, are they still there? Manual has it more they say. Asking only because I fear the dct is too muted?
@@abhisheksakpal484
I have heard that the DCT model has a different source for the exhaust system. I believe that the design is the same but it is made in a different place. Wierd, I am not noticing that the exhaust is as pronounced as the Abarth with the Superspint turbo back with high flow cat.
I bought a 2020 CTR no test drive offered, drove it for two weeks (was unimpressed considering the hype and cost), made the dealer take it back due to no test drive. Two weeks later bought the Velo N. The N is a better overall car. All you silly kids that leave uneducated comments drive both hard and then get back to me. N. delivers more smiles per mile. Way better value and they don't burn a single drop of oil no matter how hard you bounce them off the rev limiter. Hyundais USED to suck. They don't anymore. Be ready to shed more tears as Hyundais up coming performance cars start embarrassing established manufacturers.

With all the WRX rev-hang tuned out, of course...
I have a 2016 WRX and I'm considering a Veloster N. I really wish people would compare the two but no one is.
This comparison has already been done in road & track last year ... R&T issue where VN won PCOTY award. The VN also beat the STI in the same article. Neither of the Subarus turn in nearly as well as VN. The VN was engineered to be an entry level track car ... not just a hot hatch.
Those big ugly 20 inch wheels on the type r are so limiting. 18s and bigger tire will prevail
seton sieracki agreed, it was the first thing I changed with my type r, 18x9.5 those 20’s are a road hazard....

Would love that
Frs has no reliability when modded neither does the rotary engine s2k wins by default

Well, if the Civic needed a suspension tune, the Veloster should also get better brakes.
@@davidharris2147 problem is its not a apples to apples comparison. still fun to watch though!

Torque was the difference on this and I think the Veloster was set up better all around.

Civic type R front end is so nice but that rear end ruins the car. Looks like a 15 year old boy designed the rear and.
With the way Hyundai is developing I see the new veloster N out performing the Honda’s and growing rivalry with the two pushing each other
I would like to see what having way more front tire and aggressive offset would do for the Type R - my guess is that you could go significantly faster - like a 265 Hoosier A6 on a 10" rim

From my experience owning both a type r and N, the N feels like so many corners were cut in production. The type r is far superior in every aspect. If you’re thinking to get an N, just spend the extra money and get a far superior vehicle.

Suspension should be set to the same as well... as the Veloster had a more advantageous front camber, as you had said :).
But wow, the Veloster is still a beast :)
Send alignment money, these are other people's cars....

As you can see, if you combine the price of all these mods with the cost of the car (I paid $38K CAD out the door, all taxes/fees included) it's still cheaper than a bone stock brand new Civic Type R.
It's official....The classsik SAAB 900 Turbo has been dethroned as the most torquey 4 cylinder ever as a street tuned car. That Hyundai N is putting out some serious twist.
“Man it’s close”
*Meanwhile the type-r pulls a football field*
Exactly! Put them on a highway and the Veloster wouldn't see where the Type R went.
It better with 70 more hp
I think it’s more driver if anything but I really like the veloster but I’m still a Honda guy at heart
