If people don't go out and buy these, this may be last new hot hatch we see in the US for a long time. At 30 grand for a 95% Type R you have no excuses.
Hyundai built a hot hatch with fantastic handling, plenty of power, unique styling, only sells it with a 6-speed manual, it's comparable to the Civic Type R but $6k (CAD) cheaper AND it doesn't have the build quality of cheap toy. That's a sentence that would've been a joke 15 years ago.
Honestly the new civic type r won’t hold a heavy resale value. It’s kind of just average right now. It’s been dominated in TCR class racing lately. not to mention dealer mark ups truly killed sales
Kooks Garage with later models yes they were all amazing machines but this new civic type R is really nothing special. Look at the ITR as a prime example held its ground and dominated for years. This new CTR really brings nothing new to the table other than it being turbo charged
Nick S nothing new ? How about the amazing suspension work done to the car to make it handle amazing stock? and the brand new motor thats already being swapped into older civics? Would i ever spend 30k+ on a civic fuck no because it defeats the point of a civic. But do i think it holds a good spot in the honda line yea.

Kaushik Krishna i paid MSRP (Plus Markup) for mine ...The car is limited production so negotiation was tough ...When I bought it the dealer had only one ...mine was the first sold by Hyundai in the state
Carlos Ramirez yes, I still have it. The “N” is the best hot hatch out in the market. The Reliability of the car has been great. The car is very rare, I have not put tons of miles on it.
And the thing is loud in person! Like seriously loud. We were filming it on rural areas, and you could here it coming through the woods from miles away.

Owned mine for a year+, LOVE it! I use the N mode for autocross, the rest of the time I use Custom mode with the suspension in soft. One thing to consider is the cost to maintain the car, only $70 for a full synthetic oil change at the dealership, and I've had zero maintenance issues.

Matt and Zack, you should each do a leg, so we get both of your hot-seat impressions. It'd make a good discussion, and you could easily justify a 20 minute video, every time.
I would also prefer a 4 door layout but for a different reason: I like storing stuff (backpack, camera bag, etc.) away in the rear seat, so having a door on the driver's side would be faster and way more accessible.
Such a fan of this powder blue color and the seat belts are effin awesome in the matching blue. Really want this car.. Can't wait to see what they do with SUVs... Japanese automakers have to watch Hyundai / Kia in the rear view mirror...cuz they might be passing them in the future
I’ve owned a 2016 Veloster turbo for 2 years now and the doors have never been a issue. It’s also funny to see people’s reaction to it for the first time.
The Mitsubishi and Genesis coupe both shared the same motor with slight modification. The G4KF block and the 4B11T block are identical. So you're right idk why the evo ended when they could've turned it into a hot hatch with the same engine since Hyundai still makes this motor for the G70 sedan.
@@ampiciline I wouldn't recommend buying a used one. Just imagine the driving on this. Ppl will push this car. But yes the warranty will help but better new.
@@SOLID117x that is probably good advice. I've had mines less than a year and I've never driven a car this hard in my life. That being said it seems to like it. This fucking thing begs to get thrashed! I say that I thrash it, but quite frankly I don't most of the time because I'd be in prison.
@@ampiciline the issue is the warranty gets dropped to 5 years for the second owner. And I don't know if that 5 years is from the purchase date of the first owner or 5 years after the Ownership is transferred
The asymmetric thing gets a lot of flack from reviewers, but I like it. It's unique. If you want a 4 door or a 5 door hatch, they have those. If you want a coupe, they have those too. The beauty of this, is that as a driver, as far as you're concerned, you're getting into a coupe. But for kids or whomever is riding in the back, they get their own door--on the correct, curb side. And it's the only car that offers this. Most of the time, that back seat will be empty anyway, but it's nice to have access when you need it. I am sure there are plenty of coupes where a child seat would fit in the back, but getting it back there--and the kid as well--is unlivable enough to make someone sell their pride-and-joy. If all of that isn't practical enough for you, then go buy something with more doors, a taller roof, where you sit upright, and no one will ever call it "sporty." You can't have everything, but the Veloster feels like a good compromise.
I agree with this. Honestly when it first came out I thought it was the dumbest thing in the world. But then I thought about it a bit more and it actually makes sense in the way that you describe. Most of the time I commute by myself and would rather have a longer door, a B pillar that's further back from my field of vision, and the weight loss from getting rid of a door that wouldn't be used most of the time anyway. Also, if I'm driving people around I would rather have them get in from the passenger side than mine because I'm too lazy to move my seat forward lol
I bought a used base N earlier this year before the lockdowns, its a great little car especially for the price paid. Obviously if you can get a PP (Performance Pack) and can afford it get the PP, the exhaust and diff will honestly make the difference, problem is they were being marked up a lot so it was hard to get one around MSRP. The base still handles really well, we have a super twisty road near me and it handles it great even without the lsd and bigger wheels. if youre not gonna track ir or autox it, a base is great, if youre going to do either of those things, id wait for the PP honestly
As long as Hyundai dealers don't gouge the price like Honda, I think this will become the new hot hatch standard. The car has so much personality, I think the three door configuration just adds to that IMO. Plus having the longer door makes it nice for hanging your arm on the door when cruising on a nice day and gives you better side visibility so (pros and cons). The question I have is when is this thing actually going to be available? They originally told us November 2018 and here it is Jan 2019 and they are still not in dealers yet as far as I know, and I have contacted a local dealer to let me know when they are getting one, and put myself on the Hyundai notification list. so essentially almost $10K cheaper than the Type R, better looking (subjective), Sounds way better, 10 year 100K warranty, and is arguably just as fun, seems you would have to be a true Honda fanboy to pick the Type R over this car. Then consider the English/american made Type R does not have the build quality of the typical Japanese car, there are reports all over the place of them overheating on hot track days, transmission problems, why exactly would anyone choose the overpriced Type R over this car? Seems like the Korean car companies are doing to the Japanese companies, what they did to the American car companies 40 years ago, gotta love it.
@@VaunShiz Try and actually buy one at that price. I walked into several dealers advertising MSRP but that is just to get you in the door. The price difference will be close to $10K and this thing doesn't look ridiculous like the Honda does.

12:00 that. I feel that. I'm a Honda Hoe for sure but The Hyundai looks wayyyy better to me than the Type R. The Type R looks like its holding pose awkwardly trying to appear more aggressive than what it is like a junior weight lifter trying to flex for girlies while the Hyundai is like "yeah, Im a cheap Korean car but I run good. Keep it simple". It's just so much cleaner and near as much in your face.... Also, I feel like the pricing value is much more relatable to Honda's base of inexpensive FWD sportscars. It's no longer a Korean Knockoff, they can stand alone now.
Just got a Turbo R.Spec Veloster and you're right about the driver side door being a bit large. I park in small, packed parking garages frequently and have to squeeze myself in and out and worry about scratching interior plastic. Minor gripe, but I also wouldn't mind a smaller door.
Want to like this Veloster n as the performance and handling look great, but can’t get past the three door setup, just looks awkward IMO..... prefer the i30 n for looks
First I wanna say, I LOVE the Asymmetrical doors haha I'm 6'4 tho and don't fit in the Type R nearly as well as I do in this. Also, I chose the N over the Type R for one huge reason, markups! Cheapest 2019 Type R I could find (and the 2020 was already out) was $40k!!! (msrp $34,700) and the 2020 was marked up to $48k!!! ($38,700 msrp) I got my Veloster N WITH Performance Package (msrp $30,500) for $28k and couldn't have been happier whatsoever Have an air intake and downpipe now too and even without a tune am already faster than a stock Type R for $19,000 less
I never cared for Hyundai, but they’ve made some huge improvements in quality, reliability and styling. I don’t love the doors, but the styling and price with that performance....can’t beat it. I actually hope this one does really well so it pushes others to follow suit. How is it that any performance hatch you actually want costs 40k? Keep it under 30k and you’ll sell a billion of them
Hands down the best Hot Hatch on the market, especially when considering the price! My neighbor has one and I absolutely loved whipping it around the neighborhood. Just wish I could have opened it up. That exhaust is insane, though I'm sure our neighborhood hates this car, lol.
I know you guys both have busy schedules but really cool to see a review with both of you guys. Thanks for all the amazing content you guys do. Was nice to see your take on the N package
I was selling Hyundai when they came out with the 1st Veloster. This new version is miles ahead if the original. Taking it off the Accents platform was key. Albert has really done a great job for Hyundai. I hope they put the new 2.4 T motor in this car. I hear they now have dual injection in that new motor. Both port and GDI!!!
What an entry from Hyundai. Sounds great! I think the only major flaw is the gearing...that 3rd gear is just a little too tall. They should have kept the 2nd-3rd ratios closer. But perhaps you can reduce the drop in power with tuning.
How did it ride compared to the Type R? I’ve heard from a lot of different reviews that the Type R’s suspension is very livable compared to most of the other hot hatches. The type R is also more practical on the interior. I do agree though that the N looks better.
They should bring the I30N to the US. For nearly 30k i'd expect a sunroof option, different interior colors, soft touch armrests and blind spot monitoring since the rear pillars are massive
How reliable are these things actually tho? Ive heard nightmare stories about the velosters blowing up. I bet parts are pretty affordable but whats the point if you gotta fix this thing all the time
Hyundai is doing some good stuff lately! The N needs a little bit help in power, brakes and some other little stuff but for the price it definitely tickles the giblets for the fast car enthusiast!👍🏿👍🏿
We need to help get you guys past a Mill Subs... agreed on the comment below indicating a preference to have both of you guys reviewing at the same time...
*Fiesta ST isn't really a serious performer though, but a very fun daily commuter and amazing to toss around in back roads. The Recaros might be too tight if you're not on the slimmer side though, but it's definitely a great car with decent potential to make more power*
@sneeky7 *I should have clarified. I meant more in terms of racing on track where higher end cars go, not parking lot cone racing. In autocross, this car no doubt shines, along with the MX-5's and BRZ's. Those were pretty much the majority of the cars I saw when I last went to one.*
Ironic that today you post your review of the car and Hyundai Finally has it on their website (it was saying coming soon for ages). That's gotta be some clever marketing done well. Matt, did you notice your foot hitting thaw wiring harness still? My buddy has the R and my size 14 was kinda locked in place between the clutch and the wiring harness. Also the top of my feet would sometimes hit the dash. This is deal breaker level stuff
Definitely want it for the price, but I just can't justify a manual daily driver in New Jersey. Our traffic with a manual is brutal, why I went with a DSG GTI.
If people don't go out and buy these, this may be last new hot hatch we see in the US for a long time. At 30 grand for a 95% Type R you have no excuses.
Ken Cavallo with a better exhaust and reliability! Less power and speed though
So, how much does the "R" costs in US?

Want to like this Veloster n as the performance and handling look great, but can’t get past the three door setup, just looks awkward IMO..... prefer the i30 n for looks
I sure wish that the i30 was sold in the USA.
YasumotoUS the regular i30 is being sold in the US as the elantra gt sadly there isn’t the N variant
Yup , Matt was dead on, 3 doors are stupid!
Angelo F I wish they’d come out with all these performances features on an elantra. I love the look of my elantra sport 6m
Hats off to Hyundai for this one. I'd get the i30n if I could afford one.
($38,700 msrp)
I got my Veloster N WITH Performance Package (msrp $30,500) for $28k and couldn't have been happier whatsoever
Have an air intake and downpipe now too and even without a tune am already faster than a stock Type R for $19,000 less
As a Korean I used to hate Hyundai but thesedays I can see they r getting better.
I agree with what others are saying. Having both of you in the car reviewing is awesome.
More fun than a GTI, less expensive than a Type R, man, I really like this car
I never cared for Hyundai, but they’ve made some huge improvements in quality, reliability and styling. I don’t love the doors, but the styling and price with that performance....can’t beat it. I actually hope this one does really well so it pushes others to follow suit. How is it that any performance hatch you actually want costs 40k? Keep it under 30k and you’ll sell a billion of them
I would agree with the driver side door being bigger than it needs to be. But I still like the 3 door layout. One of the more unique cars out there.
god i really want one, but it'll have to wait a few years.
Will be cheaper by then to. Just gonna settle for a motorcycle for now and by the time I pay that off, these will probably be way more affordable.
WRC records telling us a lot of reason why Hyundai is giving us so much present these era
Best sounding four cylinder from the factory there is out there👌🏽
Really considering one of these
Kevin Calderon I am too, but dealers are marking them up in my area. At least for the blue ones with the performance pack.
@@justluna1656 hey I'm new to this and I can't do big cars or trucks should I get this or Jeep renegade better
I got mine under Msrp and it was a performance pack, keep looking
John Mcclane this 😂100% more fun
Actually sounds great. Very cool exhaust note.
i love the way the car sounds inside and out !
I have driven many of these cars at work, and it is a different monster than the base model and the 1.6 turbo.. Love the N..and the sound....Awesome
Always a pleasure to watch! You guys Rock!
Hands down the best Hot Hatch on the market, especially when considering the price! My neighbor has one and I absolutely loved whipping it around the neighborhood. Just wish I could have opened it up. That exhaust is insane, though I'm sure our neighborhood hates this car, lol.
Great to see you back Matt
I maybe a fan boy. I've been looking at this vs the type R for a little bit now, but I think you guys really gave it a fair assessment. Good job guys.
Finally a Veloster N on this channel!
They should bring the I30N to the US. For nearly 30k i'd expect a sunroof option, different interior colors, soft touch armrests and blind spot monitoring since the rear pillars are massive
It sounds sooooo good!
That has to be the best sounding car for the money.
That car changed my mind about Hyundai. They just need to update the Ford looking cheap interior
Wow, that lake scenery is stunning!!!
I love the One Take videos!
Props to Hyundai. They have come a long way!
How reliable are these things actually tho? Ive heard nightmare stories about the velosters blowing up. I bet parts are pretty affordable but whats the point if you gotta fix this thing all the time
i hope these follow other hyundai trends and end up 10k under msrp a year after they leave the lot. this car kicks ass
Hyundai is doing some good stuff lately! The N needs a little bit help in power, brakes and some other little stuff but for the price it definitely tickles the giblets for the fast car enthusiast!👍🏿👍🏿
Great review! They went into details on the driving dynamics which is what I like to see in a review.
Car sounds pretty darn good, and Matt you look like you have lost some weight. GJ sir.
Only one question, could it fit a 6 foot surfboard inside, maybe fold the passenger seat down?
Zack holding on to the door handle for dear life.
Very cool car indeed. Impressive to see this kind of driving mode flexibility for such a car!
I own a veloster and really like the asymmetrical doors.
How does is compare to the i30 N? Does its drive the same? Love the scenic drive :)
Definitely enjoy both of you together
How does it compare to the Fiesta ST? More fun?
We need to help get you guys past a Mill Subs... agreed on the comment below indicating a preference to have both of you guys reviewing at the same time...
Both of you in the same shot is great!!
Omg finally a video with you driving! Good shit
I love those blue seatbelts.
Finally a one take with Matt...
BEEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!!!
Dual clutch coming in 2020 and with a tune = awesome daily driver w/o the $$. Matt how's the weight loss coming? I know you were down 2-3yrs ago.
Any chance we'll see something like this but AWD? I'd like an AWD Elantra N. I feel like they can do Subaru better than Subaru at this point.
seems like Hyundai is finally delivering on their sporty promise with the Velostar. Looked like it was being flogged pretty well!
This cars actually pretty sweet. It sounds great too. But I love my wrx.
Yeah, I've played around with the idea of selling mine but never pulled the trigger on anything
R.I.P. Rev Limiter lol. Btw Matt you're awesome! ✌️
So the question is, which is more fun, this or Fiesta ST?
Fantastic exhaust note
Nice vid, thank you !
Now I really want to watch that offroad drive you mentioned, I hope it's another long video .
I wonder if changing the shocks setting would have helped with the understeer... you were kinda moving out there. Really digging the blue color !
Looks better than last gen
If only it had 3 seats in the back. Could call it a family car. That exhaust note is the best
Definitely want it for the price, but I just can't justify a manual daily driver in New Jersey. Our traffic with a manual is brutal, why I went with a DSG GTI.
Wait for the Veloster N Optionfor the upgraded materials, braking, wheels and interior.
What is the background rattle? The noise that sounds like backfire
