The turbo and wastegate sure sounds sexy as hell but the rest of the engine really doesn't sound so good. That 2.0 is a good engine but the sound it makes isn't one of its strong points.

You can't compare with the Seat Cupra due to the tyres. At least put on the better and optional S007 Bridgstone tyres on the Trophy. The S001 aren't really good track tyres. I don't get how the S007 aren't fitted as standard on the trophy. They seem to be great, but you can drive them pretty much like normal in the rain. And they were made specifically for the trophy and trophy-r. Seems strange to me. The S007 should be at least 1 - 1.5 seconds quicker on a track like this.
Videos are always good with Steve 👌 Totally agree re the TCR DSG box, why can't they calibrate it to stay in gear when in manual mode, it has a bloody rev limiter to prevent engine damage! The track prepped cars we had were on Cup 2's and had incredible front ends for a fairly heavy car 👌 Good to see Renault back at what they do best, that's a lot of hot hatch for less than £32k, I need to get my hands on one. Impressive laptime, but only equal to a 6 year old M135i...
Joe Achilles after comparing these back to back with the type r the golfs are super rare with the cup 2s as they only come on the Pretoria wheels. A couple a round I’ve seen advertised most come with the cheaper wheels on this one with p zeros.

Tbf The Golf has more BHP and is AWD, the TCR is meant to be a track car and looks the part but so much depends on the driver and the track but imo it's no surprise it being a bit slower than the R. I've got a mate who got rid of his GTI PP that's similar to this for a golf R, because he just couldn't put the power down properly setting off, it was really hit and miss and a nightmare in the wet or damp. Saying that I wonder how the Golf GTI Clubsport S would have done around this track compared to the R having more power. Also the Megane 300 has been sent around other tracks faster than the old 275, saying that it was a great car the old trophy 275 and again just one run to decide which car is fastest around the track, doesn't really prove that much especially when the times are very close.. I look forward, because i can't find it to see how the new Megane R.S. Trophy-R goes around the track, that thing is 18 seconds quicker around Nuburgring than the Leon Sub 8. Also the Honda Civic was 14 seconds quicker but it's slower around this tack, just shows you track testing isn't really the best way to judge a car.
@Andreas Brekke ah ok. No wonder. I thought they had replaced the diverter valve with a wastegate. I know my GTI sounds nothing like that from the cabin.

I was half an half between these two for a track car. The onboard footage of the vw shows what a pig it is in the corners. Megane in a class of its own
If I'm honest all VW feel like a blunt instrument on the track, good road cars! If you can get over the looks, the Type R has to be one of the best Trackday toys out there at the moment.

MQB is meant to be cheap, light and modular, it simply doesn't have the necessary qualities to make a good performance platform. If you look at all the MQB-based hot hatches they all lack in the track performance department.
Fantastic job from Renault with this RS generation 2 seconds is a lot. Maybe the base RS with CUP package, can be faster than Golf too. VW since years is only for those who wants a badge and a logo, there are many nice hot hatchs in the market for not to buy a Golf GTi.

Doesn’t help that reviewers advise to buy the standard RS with the Cup pack (so the ‘RS Cup’) instead of the Trophy, which is not quite hardcore enough on the track yet less comfortable on the road.
You check how cheery Mr. Steve is at the wheel of the various cars, and know how they rate for sportiness and handling. He was so happy in the Hyundai i30N video 😁.

Love how VW go on about the uprated brakes.. but its still a shitty floating caliper system. The 370mm setup from the TTRS bolts straight on to the mk7 uprights. I've no idea why a hot version of the golf has never included decent four-six piston fixed caliper brakes such as are available elsewhere in the VAG lineup. As we can see here, better chassis, better brakes, better engine. time to genuinely up your game VW
The RS3/TTRS brakes may look like they could handle some heat, but actually they don't. Everyone who's even a bit serious about tracking a RS3/TTRS will get rid of those brakes. That's why you can find them quite cheap on various platforms. Unfortunately a lot of VAG cars have horrible brakes, but that can be changed. There are a lot of good brake systems available from the aftermarket. Some of them can actually handle track usage without any issues.
@@Chris675R i hadn't realised this had been responded to. The issue is mostly crappy standard discs and factory pads on the TTRS setup. The calipers themselves are perfectly capable. Get some decent discs, and some RSL29 in them, and they'll cope with most punishment.
I was quite lucky, I own a Meg RS 300 and got a Golf TCR as a loaner car after I was rear-ended. But after having the golf for a while, I prefer the meg

Stephen Wood the TCR has the R engine. I think all the VAG hatches use the same EA888 but turbos and guts differ. And tuning
