It’s time for a FWD hot hatch showdown! Mat’s in the Renaultsport Megane Trophy, and he’s lining up against the Golf GTI Clubsport & Civic Type R!
So how do they compare on paper? Well first up we have the Megane, which is powered by a 1.8-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder to provide 300hp & 420Nm of torque. It also weighs in at 1,368kg.
Alongside the Renault we have the VW Golf GTI Clubsport. It’s hiding a slightly larger 2-litre turbocharged 4 cylinder under the bonnet, but its power output is down on the Megane, with the ability to deliver 300hp and 400Nm. It’s also slightly heavier, topping the scales at 1,461kg.
Then finally we have the Japanese contender - the Honda Civic Type R. It’s got the same size engine as the Golf, and however it’s slightly up on power, putting down 320hp & 400Nm. It’s also the lightest car here, at 1,358kg.
There’s one key differential here though - while the Megane & GTI are automatics, the Type R’s a manual! Will that be the key difference? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

I don't think I have ever seen the modern Renault sport Mégane RS on the roads. It's a shame that buyers have forgotten about Renault in this market, because they have such an illustrious history in the hot hatch market.

Doesn't really seem hard when they aren't being truthful with their power numbers.
Used to be that I could get an idea of how fast a car is by its power rating, now I gotta watch reviews since the Germans are competing with each other in rounding power down. This practice creates weird situations like the Golf R being faster than the S3 even though on paper they're almost identical. Someone who isn't an enthusiast will be misled.
There should be a standardized way of measuring power, just like there is with fuel consumption.
I would like to see the club sport vs the type r on a track....you know a real test of a performance car.

@@jryalls probably not a lot, its about 20HP and 20Nm torque in favour of the R and the R has haldex AWD allowing it to put down the power but also more weight.

I’m glad you brought up the fact that the Civic has summer only tires. Even the continentals on my CTR are sketch in the rain. I don’t drive it in the rain. And you didn’t get beat by anything Japan! The CTR is built in Swindon!
Should swap starting track positions after the first run, put the slowest one in the fastest position etc and swap drivers around that would help to eliminate track conditions, driver talent or lack there of and make things interesting. 😀

Swapping multiple factors would give no insight, you'd need to swap only one factor at a time either drivers or starting positions

That GTI Clubsport is getting stupid fast. In real life, probably among the fastest day to day car out there. Only beaten by its siblings the Golf R, RS3, the A45, and also crazy fast but “normal” BMW 340i.
The BMW’s aren’t the same class, even the older 1 series’s aren’t. Nor is the rs3, s3? Yeh. Rs3 no.
Golf R loses to Clubsport. RS3 and A45 are diff type. Clubsport in its class is the best

Stuff is easily accessible though. Remove the engine cover out of that Golf and you'll see it looks even worse than the Renault.

Yeah, having a diff is not really news is it. Fixed axle wouldn't quite work if you wish to go round a corner with your hot hatch.

The aero plays an important part as well, while Golfs always were fast in straight line, it will get beaten by both the Megane and the Civic on track.

Why ? There are two possible outcomes. VW delivers more than they promise or the others promise to much. But you would see, it's not the case. There is not much difference in horse power, more how it's delivered and the gear set up.

@@nathanrogers7887 it’s dull in comparison. The Type R is extreme, you either hate it or love it, but the Megane is different looking, a bit of creativity in its appearance. The golf plays it safe and to me ultimately, just doesn’t stand out. Prefer the mk7 though

The tires play a huge factor in the rain, it's pointless to test the cars performance in a pool... These hot hatches are built for pleasure, a car that is pleasing to drive, i suppose that the recipe is, a car that is fast enough, it's lightweight, looks, turns and sounds good. That's called Renault Sport.

You can have a 3l v6, but if you have it with a manual, a 2l 4cyl with a good auto double clutch, the gearbox will help it a lot, so the engine won't matter that much.
The Clubsport will easily win this one
new golf R and GTI seems to drop all their rivals without beaking a sweat, i wonder if anyone ever dyno'd one of those
.....that´s what I always say - those test cars from VW have always to spread minimum about 10% upward!
I have a mk7 Golf GTI suppose to be running 220bhp. Was running 266bhp on the dyno before it was tuned.

N’oublions pas que la megane n’a que 1.8l de cylindrée, c’est normal qu’elle soit dans les choux, surtout sur les départs lancés. Quand au freinage, les disques rainurés sont généralement les plus performants à chaud, à froid c’est pas les meilleurs.

Yeah, the conti's sport contact 6 which are on the normal FK8 would have been pefect for the conditions.
As much as I hate to admit it but with a 6MT you're basically fucked against the dsg anyway.
@@AlmightyJ97 The tyres would have made a huge difference, but against the DSG its hard to drag with a MT indeed. Thats where for me the difference shows between german cars made for numbers on the dragstrip and cars made for real driving. I rather see a Nurburgring laptime then a dragtime. if you put that against the cars shown here the DSG is no use at all vs the MT.
@@chantalslut yea i see where you're coming from, the main advantage of the Dsg is straight line speed. I personally don't like driving auto at all, but as you say, that's the direction the Germans are headed with their cars.

My pov is: Megane 4 RS are built for tracks, and curvy roads, not for straight roads...
Because, it is much easier (Imo) to pump horsepower in a car than to make a stable car at high speeds to save a second or two in corners...
Also, I'm a Renault Sport fan, driving a GT220 model - under the hood is original engine from Megane 3 RS (RS265) but only horsepower is not 265, it is 220

All these vag cars come with more hp than declared. Anyway with increasing traffic speed restrictions that fraction of a second faster quarter mile times are worthless in a street setting. The vw would get raped by the Honda and Renault in a circuit.

@@kmann4343 on a track? Last gen clubsport was quite a bit behind the trophy r and the regular civic at the nurburgring. I reckon the limited edition civic must be as fast as the trophy r, I don't know if the new clubsport made an attempt at the nurburgring yet.
@@King-Gilamashur2758 Exactly. Honda's are not made for dragracing.I had a NSX (14 years long) which was totaly crap at dragracing, but it blew all other cars of the track. So does the Civic Type R FK8. I have a FK8 now, but i liked the FK2 much better.
@@King-Gilamashur2758 BS. As a daily car on normal roads, the VW is by far the best. Driving there on the limit to make a difference is impossible, but a good start from 0 to 60 at the traffic light is just fun. The Honda and Renault in the city is just painful. The GTI is also the better all-rounder day by day.
I'd love to see the previous FN2 Civic racing the Golf GTI from the same time period. FN2 cops a lot of hate, worth giving it a good test.
FN2 was realy bad in performance. EP3 was so much better. I had 2 FN2's bought new. It was a great car though, but performance....nein.

Still take the Type R anyday of the week. Much better drivers car and satisfying driving experience overall compared to the other two.
Drivers' competence played a lot here , so it is Fairer & More Accurate gauge of a Car's Real World Performance would be having a Same Professional Driver test these Different Cars on the Same Track like the Nürburgring Nordschleife & timed them Professionally! Previous Test had shown that , the Renault Megane Sport Trophy clocked an impressive Track Time due to its Superior Set~Up! 🕯🌷🌿

Put it on the dyno and the golf will come out 30hp more because Volkswagen are big liars on the original power just like for the majority of German brands! They go faster because they have a lot more power than what is written on the paper
