In a fan of the 7 for the more recent gen’s but the mkIV R32 has a special place in my heart. I got to drive an 02 big turbo r32 for my first gti and it was insanity. 500whp is more than enough in something that small and a manual trans. 1-3rd gear were almost useless lol.

Working in a VW dealership my current demonstrator is a MK8 GTI Clubsport & i completely agree with Matt on the handling, it drives brilliantly.. GTI CS over the R every day!

Would love to see drag races of the same car of the same generation with the full lineup of the different engine choices for that car - petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric - to see the differences and gapping between the options.
Not only does the the AWD add more weight but also means more drivetrain friction loss, which means less BHP is reaching the wheels, hence the 2WD pulled away from the AWD.

My Mum had the 2007 Gti 30 Edition 2 door all black,car,wheels and tints. With a tune, motor and DSG it had 221kw something like 307hp. Was fast back in the day,that’s like 17 years ago. The tuner said the Gti’s were all boost limited till 3rd gear so would always be slower around town or from a launch,the R isn’t. Mum drives a white R these days, think it’s the mk 7 or 7.5 and loves it.
Clubsport is actually a 45th Anniversary model, no extra performance to a standard Clubsport, but worth saying still. Quite unique for both the 7.5 R and the CS45 to have Cup 2's on as standard, they usually ship with Continentals or Bridgestones. Really cool to see this line up though.

12.8 is bang on for the DSG 7.5R. Most testers insist on using the manual version for drag racing rivals, which is bizarre to me as it is markedly slower than the DSG. This test puts all this right.
Had a chance to drive a Golf 7 R pre facelift once. It was a blast. It drove good in every situation, rainy fast Autobahn drive felt very stable and safe, cornered well, nice feeling of the Interior. Such a good car. And compared to the s3 8v it already had a Touchscreen which is really nice for that time. If you want a fast fun daily the golf 7 r was or is the way to go.

There is always a mistake with golf 7/7.5. In this video is Golf mk7.5 from 2016/17, but you present it as golf mk7 from 2014....
Well in the USA, the MK7’s are 2015-2017 and the MK7.5’s are 2018-2020. We didn’t get the Clubsport here in the USA, and I know the MK7’s started earlier in other parts of the world too.

My experience with the EA488 engine in Audis and VW's is that it takes many miles/km's to free up fully. perhaps the 8.5 needs more distance under it's belt.
