When I was still in the military, I was in an airport in uniform and these two guys walked up to me, and the heavier set of the two stuck his hand out and said, "Sir, thank you for your dedication to freedom and your service to our country." It took me a few seconds to realize who he was (cowskin cowboy hat was a bit of a giveaway) and it turned out it was Vinnie Paul, traveling with his legendary brother, Dimebag, to play in the area. I immediately replied, "I recently picked up 'Reinventing the Steel' and I want to thank you guys for your dedication to kick-ass metal."

In my opinion Dimebag Darrell was one of the great visionaries when it comes to guitar. All over the works of Pantera are so many really fascinating things he does that are still amazing and fresh to listen to, even all these years and decades later. And I'm not only talking his killer riffs and solos, but also the quieter, almost bluesy stuff he mixes into the sound sometimes. RIP

I had this cheap stereo with a dual cassette deck and basically side B of VDoP in the first slot and side B of King's X Dogman in the second lived in that thing FOR MONTHS (VDoP eventually wore out, they always do) and while you could have the thing play both sides of a tape, when I got up in the morning to get ready for the day I'd be running those sides sequential then making it run the other sides back sequential if I was having a fine enough morning that I just felt like it.
At least 6 months in that configuration. I think it got bumped when I got the Allman Bros box set (yes on cassettes). :-)

    • @russellzauner
      @russellzauner 2 года назад

I would actually suggest that if he's got a discord people suggest bits from vulgar videos if he really wants to see exactly what it was like being anywhere near Pantera :-) if you are old enough and went to enough shows in the 90's you probably drank with at least one of them without knowing it, unless you noticed, in which case you noticed it and kept drinkin - I mean, they're basically like the stoner band geeks you hung out with in high school, or at least the ones I did. :-)

    • @williamcozart8158

I always loved the writing on the Trendkill, although Far Beyond, Vulgar and Reinventing all had more polished and "well rounded songs" that are probably more memorable for new listeners, but at the time the record came out... being a pissed off kid in middle/high school, the Trendkill was what hit me the hardest.
It had such raw aggression and also deep emotion, Phil isolating himself away from the rest of the band to record vocals, in his own words, "oversang" the first track, then goes way dark later and back to the aggression, and as a former opioid/benzo user can imagine Phil going through a few cycles of substance abuse, detox and withdrawal, back to using heavily again while making the record..
My favorite song off TGSTK was The Underground in America, and then the last song Sandblasted Skin was like the nastiest thing I could imagine when it came out and we knew EXACTLY what Phil meant in the lyrics and concept behind Sandblasted Skin and The Great Southern Trendkill.
My friends and I HATED all the pussified, weak assed music that Phil was bitching about and Pantera were purposefully trying not to sound like, they had to out due them in heaviness and aggression, originality and realness, not softening their sound just to get radio play or get laid or make record execs happy..

There's an interview with Terry Date, that legendary producer for a lot of mainstream successful metal albums of the 90's. This interview is about his memories on this album (considered one of the most important in metal history, being one of the heaviest to debut at number 1 on the Billboard list) and he doesn't mention a double tracking but he does mention that this was obviously done way before protools and Vinnie and Dimebag would usually work by themselves on the solos and usually splice them from 3 different tapes. He does mention they were so much perfectionists that they ended up doing like 200 different versions of A SINGLE FADE until they found the perfect one.
Anselmo's growl was surely not the first, growled vocals come more from Death Metal, and these are derived themselves from the gruffy vocals of Thrash Metal, so there are a lot of examples that pre-date Anselmo's, but surely his vocal delivery is one of the most known due to their huge mainstream success.
Anyway, great reaction Geebz it's a pleasure seeing you re-discover all these classics for a lot of us and giving us these little pearls of wisdom from your experience. Thanks for the video! I'm still here! 👍

With the drums, Vinnie would actually play with the handles of his drum sticks, and search for just thicker drum sticks. This is why the drums sound so full and punchy, he would just abuse the heck out of drums and sticks. Loved the just punch that Pantera always had. There was an interview long ago where they showed the dented cymbals from Vinnie because he loved that hard hitting sound. I saw them in concert a few times long ago, and really miss the feel they had. There were a lot of good songs on this album and on their other albums. This just brings me back to an amazing age.

You're absolutely right. Phil was one of the pioneers of the mainstream power growlers on vocals. He made it so mainstream that groups like Slipknot made their whole career out of the power growls and gutteral singing techniques thanks to Pantera making it a mainstream style of vocals. Other bands were doing it, but they weren't as mainstream, they were more underground genre until Pantera made it popular! Then they started coming out of the woodwork like copycat roaches lol. Thank you Pantera for being 20 years ahead of everyone else. They're still playing catch-up with Pantera to this day. And Dime was such a guitar God/legend, that everyone wants to be like Dimebag Darrell. They still buy his signature guitars, but they don't realize that just because they have a Dimebag Darrell signature guitar means they'll sound like Dimebag Darrell. He played with his heart and soul, his hands were just the tools he used to express what was in his soul!

There used to be a ride in Seaside Heights, NJ on the boardwalk, it was basically an indoor Scrambler but the name escapes me... Tip the DJ a buck and you could request songs to play while you were on the ride. This was one of our favorites to request... Needless to say, it brings back a LOT of memories! As always, your reactions are awesome and I love when you hit classic hitters like these.

Great video! Still watching brother! Do Floods by Pantera for your next video. They have many more popular songs, but that is revered as Dimebags best guitar performance, solo wise. So please, if you read this my good sir, take that song into serious consideration for your next song of theirs. I think you’ll enjoy the journey the song will take you on, and there is a VERY familiar melody hidden within the focal part of the song that I know you’ll dig very much.
Thanks for the great content my dude!

Not sure about the doubling on Dime's solo, but if that's the case, just adds to his legend. Being able to rip that out almost identical is amazing 🤘🤙

Keep in mind, Pantera only had/needed one guitarist. And also, Anselmo's growl singing was untrained. He literally ripped his throat and vocal cords apart doing it for as long as he did. He still does a Pantera tribute concert occassionally, but it has taken a long long time for all those wounds to heal.

    • @jasondurden7384

Bro, a reaction channel covering PANTERA?! Not only that, *BUT A GREAT CHANNEL COVERING PANTERA?!* I knew subscribing here was a good plan when I found you months ago!
Pantera will always be near and dear to me. I was introduced to them as a kid by my older brother (who was big into metal and country - in his words, because he "didn't have to change his hairstyle" since 80s/90s metal and country had a lot of long hair lmao). Pantera was the first concert I ever went to when I was 12 (thanks older brother for convincing mom!), and in total got to see them about 2 more times over the years before Dimebag's tragic death. Pantera contributed a lot to who I am in good ways, and helped me balance some difficult things along the way. My appreciation for them doesn't have a ceiling, and there are still a bunch of Pantera songs that scratch that spot that very, very few other bands reach for me, personally. Very excited to hear that Pantera has a place in your history as well!

"Finding the metal that's in my blood" - this is a badass experiment
One of those songs that makes you squint and scrunch up your nose like taking your first bite of a really good steak. Maybe it's just that I was 16 when it came out, but the whole album is SO mean soundwise. It's that Whammy(Digitech) pedal putting out blended dry and pitch-shifted signal on an expression pedal in the solo though, holy crap what a sound. I bet Dime kept Digitech in the black as a company just being associated with that thing.
Suggestions... A New Level, By Demons Be Driven, Walk, No Good(Attack the Radical), Heresy, Domination, Medicine Man, The Art of Shredding, 5 Minutes Alone. That gives you the first 3 major releases and a different feel to each album. 3 different producers? They just kept getting heavier with each recording.
