It's a shame Lars and James don't like bass much. It's always really down in the mix, with the exception being The Black Album. Their other instrumental, "Call of Ktulu" has Cliff doing some wild things on the bass with his wah and effects but a lot of it is drowned out in the final mix.

Geebz, do yourself a favor and look up the isolated bass track for this song. It’s on RUclips, and it shows the incredible range of sounds and textures Cliff contributed to this song. A lot of the portions I assumed were guitar are actually Cliff’s bass.

@Big Homie Steve The Metal Head Death Magnetic is in a weird place in their discography. After the last few albums had just about demolished their legacy as an epic band, this was the first step on the path to redemption. For all its good songs it still couldnt erase the disgust people had for St. Anger at the time. Even now when I think of that phase of their career i still have trouble separating it from the dogshit they had been putting out for the last 20 years lol

My absolute favourite Metallica song, also a classic in making people go “wait that’s not a guitar?”
The intro is either a bass, or an organ/synth, there’s a lot of debate over that, but it’s apparently Cliff either way
The lead line at 3:20 is Cliff
The clean interlude starting at 8:00 is Cliff
And finally the solo at 13:34 is Cliff, this song combined with Pulling Teeth really makes it clear why he has inspired so many people to get into bass

Even though Orion is a masterpiece and extremely important song to me, my dad and my relatives, you *need* to listen their other fully instrumental piece: Call of Ktulu (Cthulhu is mispronounced intentionally).
Both versions, the original and the S&M version which was performed with SF philharmonica so insanely intense and creates the perfect atmosphere when the inspiration for the track is H.P. Lovecraft's pantheon.
EDIT; At the end of the song you said how the Orion must have been a blast to see live. Well, they played it first time live waaaay way after. Robert Trujillo was the first bassist Metallica gave permission to play it live. Personally I've seen Orion once live and I won't be lying, I cried.

Yeah as pointed out they have an instrumental on the Ride the Lightning, Puppets, and Justice albums. For me Orion is an example of the more grand composition style that was basically the entire Justice album (my favorite incidentally). That whole album is song after song written almost like concertos with movements. And in Orion you get the exposition/statement of the theme, then the slow movement in a triple meter, then recapitulation.

So particularly when playing content or playing a video game the volume is so low I have to turn the volume all the way up to hear the dialog or song, and in the worse cases, their dialog is too loud then. So kinda dumb but I really appreciate your well balanced volume.

I've no doubt you've already been informed that Cliff was a virtuoso and scholar of fine music. About as talented and brilliant a musician as you'd hear of any genre...
I listen to vast array of music from metal to electronic and dub, to straight rock, but Orion is, was, and will always be my favourite tune from any band or artist, ever. The very soundtrack of my life. Just a brilliant piece of music, composed by a brilliant musician.

They did 3 others instrumentals : Anesthesia (Pulling teeth), Call of Cthulhu and To Live is to Die.
To Live is to Die is actually a tribute to Cliff, released after his death. The song has a heart-wrenching middle section, very melancholic, that Cliff is said to have written but never recorded (hence the tribute from James, Lars and Kirk). I would strongly recommend you check this one out !

Great analysis. Cliff was extremely talented, taught the rest of the band harmonies and structure. Metallica's music was never the same after Cliff died, until Robert joined. And, Lars is a good drummer, not great, but good.

One of my favourite Metallica tracks from my favourite Metallica album, there’s a couple of pieces in this track that people don’t always realise is actually Cliff playing on the bass, I’m pretty sure there is a quote from Cliff where he talks about the base solo he plays right after a guitar solo and how he thought probably no one will notice it but it’s there.

You brought up that "artifact" during the low swing of the song. Yeah, I think that is, in fact an artifact of cliff's fingers gliding over the strings. Very glad they didn't remove that sound in post-production. Also, you may want to check out "Call of Cthulu". It's not on the level of Orion, but cliff really brings the aquatic wail of Cthulu to life!

The real shame about this masterpiece of work, is that Cliff never actually got to ever play it live, because I know it would have been killer.
For a great, and clear, example of cliff's talent at what he can make the bass do, check out "(Anesthesia) pulling teeth" or the tribute version performed at S&M2 (Symphony & Metallica) by Scott Pingle, where Scott used an electric symphony bass, and recreated Cliff's pedal board to achieve a true sound to the tribute he performed :)

Orion is far and away my favorite song from Metallica, and I will always maintain it's criminally underrated.
I love when Cliff comes in with the bass solo and what I can only describe as the crying guitars after the little drum build up.
It still gives me chills to this day every time. Hearing it, playing it, doesn't matter. I just love it so thoroughly.
Edit: I also feel like this sorta jamming thing and layering and building the sound so organically while never having the song be predictable is what laid the foundation for bands like Tool to really thrive and put it all out there and experiment like they do on their later albums.
