I was 16, the local record store opened at midnight to sell this album the second that it was released. I was in line with about 50 other people and this was in a small town with a total population of around 10,000. I bought the cd and raced to my friends house and he and his girlfriend came running out. We all sat in my truck and listened together for the first time . We listened to it several times and then wound up driving up into the mountains and watching the sun rise with this as the soundtrack. Great night and great memories...

I was 14 in 1986 and had never heard of Metallica. On the day Master of Puppets was released, I just happened to go in a record store with my dad and saw Master of Puppets on display. The artwork amazed me and I asked my dad if I could have it. Wow. My first introduction to heavy metal and I never looked back. Amazing band.

This song really holds a special place in my heart. I learned how to play guitar by locking myself in my room and listening to Metallica spending hundreds of hours working things out by ear because we were too poor to buy those tabliture books and as I'm sure you know back in the 90s tabs online were never reliable. Anyway this was the first time I really got stumped trying to play a song. It was the opening riff and I remember it to this day I was 11 years old and I remember my mother coming in during my frustration and telling me just before I was about to give up "slow it down and dont come out till you got it" sounds harsh but it was exactly what I needed to hear. So yeah thank you for bringing this song up. It really is the Moonlight Sonata of Metallica.

Year's later I used this song as part of my wedding too, a few more significant part's of my life I'll always think of attached to this one as well, like learning why I liked or connected with this type of music when someone used this song to show me that song's are more than just sounds. I guess what I'm saying is that I won't actually be dead unless this is played at my funeral someday. Definitely a mind melter.

This song is one of their greats. I remember reading that James didn't intend for this to be a Metallica song. Michael Kamen (RIP) arranged the springs section.
This and "Anesthesia" are the only 2 Metallica album tracks that Kirk did not play on. James played all his parts on this track, not just the solo.
Please react and breakdown some of their more obscure stuff, which other reaction channels won't touch, such as Slither, Minus Human, Fixxxer, etc 🤘

The Orchestra was arranged by Michael Kamen.
He was surprised by how little the orchestra was present in the final song, and he asked them about it.
The showed him the "elevator version" of Nothing Else Matters, with full orchestra, and then they listened to the final cut.
All agreed the final cut was better.
The Elevator Version is somewhere around RUclips, you can look it up. It's beautiful, but amazingly, the less was the better.

Excellent video and I appreciate your take on this magnificent song! I was 21 years old when this album was released, living and working in the Atlanta, GA area at the time and working as a bartender. Metallica booked a show in Atlanta that sold out so fast that they added a second one the following night and I had the privilege of attending BOTH!!, They had no opening act, played right at three hours straight and just absolutely killed it both nights. I was tripping on acid the first night, went all by myself and chose a seat way in the back as far as I could get from the stage (and other people!) and I absolutely had the time of my life dude…such fond memories! I saw them most recently in Charlotte, NC back in 2018 and they still freaking kill it live!

I was 25, had two little kids aged 7 and 4, was married to my first husband, worked at a small electronics manufacturing company doing R & D assembly for the engineers, hanging out with my best friend Sue (she died from cancer almost 2 years ago, at the end of this month), and things were pretty good- till they weren't, later that year. But I got the CD when it came out, and I loved it. The two stand-out CDs that came out that year that I still listen to are the Black album, and Roll the Bones by Rush. A lot has happened since then in my life, but music is always there for me- it's why I got a treble clef tattoo between my shoulder blades- a symbol of that one constant in my life, no matter what else happens- as I recovered from being homeless and losing everything during my second divorce while also fighting crippling nerve damage following 6 back surgeries, disability, and chronic pain at the end of 2002. My memories from 1991 are generally good ones, and I've learned to let go of the bad ones as I've gotten older. It's easier now to let them go faster, since what I find important has changed a great deal over time- losing one life and moving into another in which I've chosen to be a genuinely happy person helped give perspective, and choosing music that has meaning to me will always help me to recall the good memories, and reinforce the lessons I've learned from the bad.

Myself and two other friends heard this album when it first came out. We played it so many time that summer. As young kids we lived life balls out and had so much fun that year. Shortly after school started I moved and ended up going to another school. I received a call from one of those guys to let me know other passed away. At his funeral they played this very song. To this day when I hear this song it reminds me of my youth and a lost friend, however myself and the other friend have remained best of friends. We are more brothers than friends. The Black album and this song in particular make a considerable contribution to the soundtrack of my life like so many others. But this one shuts me down and takes me back in a way like no other.

1991, I was 10 and discovered my brother's cd/tape collection of Metallica and I was hooked for life. This was the first song I learned on guitar, I only had the tablature and I self-thought myself how to play guitar on this song. I wanted to make those sounds myself so bad I remembered nothing but positive from this period. I didn't care about learning anything but the things I wanted, no chords, notes, nope! Just the cherry lane book, so I also learned how to play their mistakes.
The tabs were in a foreign language, with no internet, nobody to ask for help, nothing but my drive within me.
so I had no idea what distortion, palm muting, etc was for ages, somehow I figured it out and I owe this song everything.
in 94 I bought my first guitar (I had borrowed a horrible guitar till then), I worked all summer as a 13yr old making enough to import the first kh2 to my country, it was about 2000usd back then. So my playing took off when playing a proper guitar. It took 20 hours changing strings, I had no idea what I was doing, a common thread in my musician life, I just wanted to make those sounds myself.
I have to say that I struggled with writing this in a coherent matter, I just started to remember all the wonderful things from discovering music at the age of 10 on my own, with no incentive whatsoever.
btw I am currently high on memories, so my writing is just train of thoughts, no editing.
I still just play for the enjoyment, nothing more, no band, just a friend to jam with.
    Cheers.

I absolutely love this band, one of my favorites. Did several school projects on them. This song is a beautiful piece that just makes me want to grab a lighter and sway with the melody and get lost in the words. I feel that this song has a huge life lesson that, in a world full of internet drama over the pandemic, politics, and celebrities, we all need to be reminded of. Its a song about caring for others, especially those closest to you. What matters is what brings you together. You should not let the others bother you. Live and let live. "Life is ours, we live it our way"
When you have the chance please do either
    The garden of earthly delights
    Or
    Theatre of war
    Both by apocalypse orchestra.

I loved the comment about James voice. I love the power of metal, but the growling/screaming of most bands is a deal-breaker. James voice with their music works perfectly.

This is the song that eventually got me into metal. My big brother borrowed the Black Album from a friend, and I listened to it, going from Nothing Else Matters to a bit heavier, like The Unforgiven, and then to 'Wherever I May Roam" - and suddenly I was listening to "Holier Than Thou" and "Struggle Within". It made me buy more Metallica albums and BAM I was hooked, going down the Pantera/Machine head/Fear Factory hole. Now one of my most favorite bands ever is The Dillinger Escape Plan. All thanks to "Nothing Else Matters": Kinda crazy.

Where I was when this first came out? I was not even a thought yet, I'm 27. 😆
I grew up with parents with great taste in music, though. So I grew up listening to Queen, Dire Straits, Phil Collins, Metallica, Sting and tons of other great singers and bands from that time... So these songs are very nostalgic to me more than I associate them with a certain part of my life.

I'm just on a string of watching your videos - they are so cool to experience. I'm the definition of a "pure listener" because I'm not only completely aloof to the musical wizardry, but I'm not even very artistic in general!
From a compositional aspect, I don't know how deep the song is, but from a soulful aspect, I would love to hear you react to Chris Stapleton's "Whisky and You." He has other vocal performances that are insane, like "Sometimes I Cry," but I think that "Whisky and You" would be interesting to better for a pure listener to understand because it isn't his most amazing vocal display. It's just a somber soul-wrencher.

I was 17 when this came out. Already into Metallica from MOP and Justice, already hooked. I got a ride to my local record store and bought the CD and listened to it with the lyric booklet open as was my ritual back then. Like you said I can remember where I was and how I felt listening to this album for the first time. When Justice came out I remember riding with my older friends from school blaring it out of his convertible with the top down driving the back roads in the sticks during that summer. They will always be one of my favorites. Been lucky enough to see them 9 times in concert. Made it my whole purpose to see bands I loved every time they were within a reasonable drive. Music saved me and has always been a special escape. Especially Metallica, and I feel the same about James. He's like a kindred spirit to me.

No matter what the common opinion about Lars’ drumming is, the SOUND of the drums and the fills he does in this song here is what makes my face melt. Part of my soundtrack of life as well, along with some other tracks of the black album.

The arrangement was done by Michael Kamen, who happens to also be the one who did the arrangement for comfortably numb. I was 17 hanging out on one of the piers of seaside heights, nj, and sad but true and this song played on one of the rides there.

I honestly don't remember the first time I heard this song, but I remember learning to play it at about 12 or 13 years old. I was just really struck with how simple but effective it is. I honestly looked at my guitar instructor kind of confused when he said that those first 6 notes were all open strings (6, 3, 2, 1, 2, 3). Really enjoyable to play, and really requires being in touch with an emotional calmness.

Slept out for tickets for the Black Album tour. Still got kirks pic (Plectrum love that word)....
Although I'm a bit of a purist, this album still rocks. Can't deny that.
And James's lyrics (as always) are deep, heavy but with that silver lining. Underrated.
Michael Kamen did a great job on the orchestration. Didn't know the band at all....
And James's solo, boy that Man's got some feel!

This album is amazing! Not comparing it to Master of Puppets, they would be unfair, but it is such a staple. Such a beautiful song. Been binging your channel lately. Started with Tool breakdowns, then Mudvayne, now this. I appreciate the way you geek out.

My brother had just gotten home from basic training with the Marines. We walked several miles to the local mall and he bought this album. Shortly after is when they dropped the VID for Enter Sandman. It took some getting used to but, it's up there in the best of list. This seemed like a time that several "staple" metal bands came out with albums that pushed boundaries from where they had come from. I think this is when Metallica truly hit the ground running. Still an In Justice for ALL fan. My favorite album. However, the production really took it somewhere new.

I was 12, staying up late (as per usual), watching Headbangers Ball on MTV on Saturday (and playing video games). Thought it was odd that a ballad like this would be on the show, but it was Metallica, so who cared, they could do no wrong (at that point). Already had the cassette (...and had almost played it to the point of breaking lol), so a light song didn't surprise me.
Metallica was my first concert (even though James had to stop to cuss at everyone for tearing up and throwing sod at the new amphitheater they were playing), parents let me choose a show for my 15th bday (which started my life-long obsession with concerts, in my 20's you may as well as listed my home address as a concert venue), also my first foray into metal as a kid, doesn't matter how long it's been since I've heard a track from them (pre-Damage, Inc.) that I immediately remember every note and lyric for it, probably has to do with falling asleep constantly with one of their albums playing lol.

I was 15. I was living in Monaco, my friend just got MTV, the first week-end he got the channel they planned the Metallica week-end. We were in front of tv, eyes wide open, amazed by the songs. I just started playing guitar and i worked so hard to learn this song. It’s been the first song that i taught my son when hé started guitar two weeks ago. This song means more to me than any other song. My mom could tell when i was sad, happy or mad, playing that song. This song is my go to when i need a « home » song.

Metallica was the soundtrack of my pre-teen and high school years. They were the first band I ever remember really getting into (got my dad to thank).
If you love the strings you should check out their S & M (Symphony & Metallica) album. Michael Kamen, who did the arrangements here, added an entire symphonic arrangement for a whole live show

I was in high school, and I lived near the beach. This reminds me of driving to the beach with a pile of surfboards tied to the roof, shooting pool in my buddies garage, and enjoying my last summer of high school (it was one of the best summers for me). I remember hearing this song for the first time a few years ago when I was first getting into rock. It was on my phone as I shared an account with my dad and he had this song downloaded. I was on a trip with my church and we were stopped outside of a store at night for a break. I had been listening to music and out of curiosity I listened to this song. I wasn't familiar with the group either. It hooked me in and it was so beautiful and enriching to my ears that it felt like a warm blanket wrapped around me. By the time the solo part had ended and it was closing out, I was so entranced by such musicality. About 4 years later, here I am recently having listened to the whole album for the first time and wow such a cool album in general. Definitely takes me back 💕

I was 13 and was in my 2nd year of high school. I remember seeing the music video for this tune and was taken away when I first heard. I'm a musician and an avid listener, so when I bought the album and played it through my headphones, the dynamics blew me away. My father was a creative director in advertising, as well as a musician and he was just as impressed. I got my ear for music from him. He passed away last year from Covid and finding your channel has reminded me of the countless times we'd sit and talk music. Thanks again !
