On 2 June 2023, tragedy struck when three trains collided near Balasore, Odisha. Two passenger trains, the Coromandel Express and the SMVT Bengaluru-Howrah SF Express, collided after an initial collision involving goods train near Bahanaga Bazar station. At least 275 people were killed and more than a thousand people were injured. In this video, we examine what happened in Odisha, and why it happened. We also discuss the indigenous Kavach system as well as assess the IR, CAG, and NCRB reports to understand what's really wrong with the Indian Railways. Finally, we try to find solutions to avoid such national disasters in the future.

As someone who was actively involved in the rescue, I am grateful to the news media outlets for keeping their eyes away from us. There were a few reporters at the site, and all non-local reporters were a COMPLETE NUISANCE. They nagged people who were busy working and they kept getting in the way. Imagine what would happen with our national media.
Another point I want to make clear is that I was on the site within 40 minutes of the accident. By the time I reached there, local people had already started rescue and first aid. Police was nowhere to be seen. People of all religions and communities were helping together. Many, many lives were saved by the quck and fast response of the locals. We managed 3 compounders to deal with their injuries as much as they can, and we had only 1 ambulance to take victims to the hospital at Soro. So, we had to choose the worst ones that can still be saved, tough decision but what else can be done. But soon, with more ambulances, right wings of all religions came and opened their shops. Some of them were arguing with NDRF abour rescue tactics, some were just getting in the way of rescuers in their overeagerness to get into the camera frame, wearing skull caps or saffron shawls. Odisha, being a state that is neglected by the whole of India, is a very secular and nationalist state. Barring that one incident in Sambalpur, Odisha doesn't have any animosity between communities. But a tiny bit of exposure to Indian media was enough to irritate the locals. Thankfully the DRMs and Rail Minister arrived on the scene and controlled everything. The presence of the minister resulted in an increase in the efficiency of authorities, and the poor locals got some support in the form of medicines, bandages and other supplies. No media has reported this until now, but 15 locals have been injured in rescue operations, with 3 being severely injured through shocks and heavy things falling. Right wings of all religions came and left after doing their photo and video ops, but the locals have been again left on their own, with things like injuries, crucial articles like ladders, bikes, carts, lamps, utensils etc taken away and never returned.
And yet, if someone goes to those people and talks with them, all of them will say that they don't mind the cost that they had to incur, as long as Indian lives were saved. A sad one sided love story.
Also, thank you for calling Odisha as Odisha and not Udisa, or Urisa, or Udhisa.

I heard something really heartbreaking from one of my Dad's colleagues who was involved in the accident and was in the train returning to Howrah. He said that he saw some local people disguised as rescuers were literally LOOTING the dead bodies. They took away their watches, necklaces, rings and phones from the bodies of the dead and injured. Yes, there were people who were working hard to rescue them but there were also heartless people like them in the scene. This is just so sad and heartbreaking. Also a big applaud goes to their visionary CM who has led Odisha from poverty to a fast paced industrial and IT economy along with upliftment of poor...
And all this because Mr.Patnaik the CM has successfully managed to keep the domestic politics out of the national politics of communalism, casteism and hatred by staying neutral . and only focussed on development and development...

Well done mohak! The way you explained all the details one by one , it just shows how properly u have researched on this accident . Well, I am a resident from balasore and on the day of accident I was in my village which is bahanaga. When the accident took place, suddenly the whole bahanaga market & village people were alerted and even without prior knowledge , people rushed to that site and helped in rescuing of people for whole night. Many locals injured themselves while rescuing people. The accident took place near about 7:00 pm but it took 3-4 hours for the official NDRF team and others to reach at that spot. Even after their arrival a lot of people just sat over there and only a few people helped during the rescue process. I would say majority of the work of rescuing was done by local people of bahanaga and local club members from balasore. As a eye witnesser of that scene I can confidently say more than 1000+ people are dead and more than 2000+ people were found injured and rescued at the sight. But the govt. Is not revealing the exact number and due to which media personals are showing 300 deaths and 900 injured list. The real heroes are the people of balasore who came for donating their blood overnight just to save the life of injured ones and also the local bahanga people who tried their level best in rescuing the lives without caring about their own safety. They are the real heroes and definitely deserve some praise from the whole nation.

As a person whose father works in the construction department of railways, the point about overworking the staff and lack of staff is absolutely correct.
My father works almost all day and night, even sometimes in the midnight. Sometimes he is not even allowed to come home during festivals.
He too mentions that railway is in loss because many passengers don't even bother to buy tickets,
in case of any rallies or protest many citizens tend to destroy the trains as a sign of protest ( we often see it on tv), they also block the track which delays the train thus faces huge losses.
    The solution?
First of all Us citizens of india must not destroy any public property just for the sake of a protest because it again directly impacts us.
Second - dear goverment, please recruit staff as early as possible and focus on maintaining the older trains than focusing on trains like Vande Bharat.

Some of my classmates those used to brags about how they travelled without buying tickets are now posting stories why there was no Kawach" system installed on the trains. Irony!! I myself seen geneal coaches filled with people without tickets, TC also rarely checks the General Coaches.
One day, i wasn't able to get a reserved seat because of heavy rush so i thought to buy a ticket of general coach. The way general coach works is that "Who comes first gets the seat, given that person should have bought the general coach ticket". I reached the coach and asked a girl whether she has the ticket to which she replied "No", so i asked TC that a girl sitting their doesn't have a ticket but i have, he said me i will check tickets later till then you can stand but no one came to check for 8 hours & then the girl without ticket just walked out happily whereas me with ticket have to sit on floor.

Accidents wouldn't be inevitable in any case but the damage wouldn't be this much.
(Kavach system only in 1445 km and total railway lines are 68000 km at this rate it would take a lifetime to implement it. But in this case the kavach or no kavach accident was bound to happen)
In the span of 2017-2021 more than 1127 derailments occurred and in most of them their enquiry report was delayed. How come security systems never improved even after so many accidents?

As a regular railway traveller, one thing I always noticed that railway has less ticket revenue but trains, specially sleeper class coaches always carry more than double passengers. Same scenario contributed to the huge no of death in this case. Its not that people wants to travel free of cost, but the no of trains in some busy tracks are very low.

I think it's not that people are not travelling from train it is the opposite. There aren't enough trains for all the people. That's why we see so many passengers especially in Mumbai just hanging onto the train on the outside cuz there are so many people who all need to get to work.

Thank you Mohak! This is one of the most sensible video I have seen on our recent train tragedy. I completely agree on this that, we still lacking behind in terms of safety. I frequently travel long distances via Indian railways, and I must say that services are improving, but the imrpovement is mostly focused on premium railway customers. As you mentioned that, number of rail passenger is declining every year, becasue Airlines are very competitive now a days. Still, for Indians railway will be one of the major choice. What I have seen is that, in terms of services and hospitality, a sginifcant improvement has been done in upper class coaches only. What about the passengers, travelling in Sleeper (Non-AC) or General class? How railway is thinking about a sustainable and holistic development approach for customer satisfaction? Now a days it is really a challenging to get a confirmned tatkal ticket, if you are traying it by yourself on IRCTC App/ website. Last year 2.7 Cr. people were in the waiting list, and they could not get to travel by train. Railway must think about the semi high/ high speed trains (e.g. Vande Bharat) in India, but our focus should be on a holistic development of sleeper trains, which travels for a much longer durations. I have seen, people travel in the general compartment with so many propblems. Railways never tried to ease their journey or comfort them with any facilities.

I am extremely proud that our country is developing and we are getting trains like Vande Bharat but the major point is that people who travel frequently by train(their niche consumer) are not the people in Vande Bharat but the people in General Class of a passenger train so these issues should also be rectified

The fact that In generally boggy many people even don't bother to buy tickets resulting in loss of revenue . It's a compete ecosystem. Trains have to be more clean , safer , on time etc so that people will travel more coz even today affording a plane ticket in not possible for everyone's wallet .
