But Smith stays my favorite doctor, as I said, Capaldi is brilliant in season 9 and has some of the best episodes ever (heaven sent, the Zygon Inversion, ...) but Matt Smith was consistently great, even on his very first episode, where he got one of the best ever moments of the show (the dialogue with the Atraxi), when you add to it the speeches of Akhaten and the Pandorica, River Song (even if, and I admit it, River's best episode is with Capaldi), he also has my favorite episode of the show : the 50 years anniversary.
David Tennant is overrated. He benefited from good stories and tends to grandstand. Peter Capaldi shone even with bad material. I'd also rate Matt Smith a little higher than David.
His 12th Doctor role is the best by far. What I love about Capaldi is that he is so good at acting that he makes everything he's in feeling so real. Even though he's quiet popular, he's still underrated.
To me, his defining role is Malcolm Tucker. An absolute pinnacle of British comedy, and manifests cynicism and ideological tit-for-tat which definitely has a place in British politics. Not to mention the greatness of the character, from his intensity, to his genius, to his reputation in Westminster, to him essentially owning and operating the Labour Party through fear and ideological purity. The character of Malcolm Tucker is legendary, and Peter Capaldi executed it perfectly.
This is an actor with absolutely brilliant range. He's proven he can do comedy, action, drama, tragedy, villainy, heroism; sometimes all in the same role. 1:22 - Capaldi as anything...Yes, please!
have you seen his letters live, theres 2 one responding to a letter from a muslim leader, which had me on the floor laughing, it was that good, the other was a captain in ww1 sending a letter home to his family, the night of the Christmas Armitise, that had me in tears, go look them up!

He is only seen as the best when he had finished his run. In series 10 he became the possibly the best doctor, if not the best. He is my personal favourite. He has Tom Baker inside of him but a but of John Pertwee and Matt Smith too.
No mention of two of my favorite roles of his: Jim in Aftersun and Mark Jenkins (Side's dad) in the first series of Skins. He's just perfect as middle aged guy having a midlife crisis and manages to be absolutely endearing while he's doing it.
As a Matt Smith fan, it did take me a couple of episodes to get used to Peter in the role but he was an amazing Doctor and leaves behind a great legacy

Even though capaldi is a underrated doctor. That still doesn't mean the entire fandom loves him. In my opinion, David Tennant will always be my favourite but , proformance wise, Capaldi gives everything that he has got and it shows. The Doctor really has the whole package. My favourite moment was when he had to get through the wall by punching a material harder than diamond and he did it for 2 billion years. That is a lot of time and patience. If I could live that long I would just give up instantaneously.

And while I didn't see The Thick of It or his portrayal as the Cardinal in the Three Musketeers, ( maybe I should....) without ?..... seriously, 12 is the one role we will ALL remember him for. No. Frobisher is still top for me. I still don't think they would've brought him back for the 12th doctor if Torchwood hadn't had him for Mr. Frobisher first. His performance was so powerful that I've even had trouble accepting him as The Doctor because of it. I will never, ever forget it. (nor should anyone else, imo)

So, even though I agree Tennant was definitely the most "human" Doctor compared to the others (he was still decidedly alien imo), I see that as a strength rather than a weakness of his portrayal. Plus, Tennant's performance and the quality and consistency of the writing during his era was just too good for him to be that far down. If you like your Doctor to be more overtly alien, then I can totally see why you'd not rate Tennant as highly as most others do. The trans woman he played in Prime Suspect deserves a mention. Her ending made me cry, thanks mostly to Capaldi's heartbreaking performance. I loved him as Charles I as well.
I preferred Capaldi as Richelieu than the Doctor. He had better material that enabled him to show what an amazing and charismatic actor he is. What Moffat gave him in Dr Who was an inconsistent mess, it was like the writers didn’t know what they wanted 12 to be like.
I didn't even remember it was the same actor. I remember the Caecilius character was the same actor but Forbisher(sp?) was such a dramatically different character I didn't even make the connection.

WatchMojo UK there's another thing that you probably didn't know about Peter Capaldi, he also voiced rabbit on the live action Winnie the Pooh movie Christopher Robin.
I believe he fairly did a great job at voicing rabbit, one of the most memorable but some people hate character of the Winnie the Pooh franchise. Especially when he originated from the original Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin AA Milne books

Joshua V. Harding I kinda see what you're saying. However, that same humanity is what made him so appealing, relatable and accessible to so many people. So, even though I agree Tennant was definitely the most "human" Doctor compared to the others (he was still decidedly alien imo), I see that as a strength rather than a weakness of his portrayal. Plus, Tennant's performance and the quality and consistency of the writing during his era was just too good for him to be that far down.
If you like your Doctor to be more overtly alien, then I can totally see why you'd not rate Tennant as highly as most others do.

The trans woman he played in Prime Suspect deserves a mention. Her ending made me cry, thanks mostly to Capaldi's heartbreaking performance.

I preferred Capaldi as Richelieu than the Doctor. He had better material that enabled him to show what an amazing and charismatic actor he is. What Moffat gave him in Dr Who was an inconsistent mess, it was like the writers didn’t know what they wanted 12 to be like.

I had totally forgotten Capaldi played Frobisher in Torchwood.
I didn't even remember it was the same actor. I remember the Caecilius character was the same actor but Forbisher(sp?) was such a dramatically different character I didn't even make the connection.
@@kathyoverton998 Which only proves how brilliant he is as an actor. Happened to me as well. Had to look him up when they introduced him as the Doctor and could not imagine him playing it.
What about Peter as the angel Islington from Neverwhere?
