There are other versions of Romeo & Juliet. This 1968 version is to me by far the best. You can feel the whirlwind of emotions portrayed by the characters; the excitement, the anger, the fear, the love, the conviction. The other films just don't have that by comparison.
Michael B. you are so right the youth of today doesn't even know what a romance is im a 55 yr old who believes in chivery and courtship. A dieing breed.
My wife and I have been married for 35 years. When we were engaged, we had this movie on VHS tape. We’d watch it all night, with a jug of cheap red wine, until the sun rose. When we were Married, on our Honeymoon we went to Italy. One stop was in Verona, where we stood under the balcony of Juliet. That memory can never be taken away. I Love You! ❤
Anyone here in 2023? We watched this movie yesterday and i was in awe of how beautiful this song is. It’s so powerful, and emotional, and raw. It’s beautiful. I don’t usually like movies that are like this, but this was insanely good. The music, the lyrics, the singer... it’s all so beautiful.
Heartbreakingly beautiful and tragic. I saw this in the early 70's when I was a a teenager, with my first girlfriend. Almost 50 years later and it still affects me profoundly. I still love that teenage girl. Miss you everyday Val. Maybe we can make it work in the next life.
I think her reaction is genuine! She is not a child, but a beautiful teenager! I experienced a similar event, although I was younger (16), like Juliet, and the woman, who is now my wife of 47 years, was my Juliet, and she was 17. Unless you have experienced this, you have no idea how intense this love is! It has survived, in our relationship, for a lifetime! Don’t condemn, Juliet!
She is sweet and innocent! Your reaction shows your lack of sensitivity. I could say more, but I will refrain my comments. I saw this movie in 1969, when I was 15. I prayed for a Juliet….found my Juliet….and married my Juliet! We are now married for 47 years! You have a right to your opinion, but I have experienced this love personally!
This sounds so lovely that I can literally see it happen in front of me! I wish I lived back at the time and could have watched this in the theatres. It must have been an unexplainable experience! 🍃
that happened in my classroom with the 1996 version when Leonardo appeared. I was very much in love with both Leonardo and Leonard for years....I don't think I ever got over either of them...Leonards face is lovely, and his voice so gentle....
Best version ever made. In 1968,I was in high school, very much in love with a boy. I later married this boy and we have been together for 46 years. My English teacher took us to see this movie when we were reading Romeo and Juliet. I love the music even today.
me :) I remember i was a child when i first saw it, i was playing in the streets with other kids, when one of our friends opened the window and shouted out : why are you playing outside when romeo and juliet is on tv now? we said we didn't care. then she continued: Romeo is such a cute, handsome, sexy guy :) so we all rushed home to watch it. I was mesmerized by their beauty
The best love story ever written. If anyone had one chance to live anything remotely close to this story. we were blessed. I was ONCE. AND, never stopped loving my Juliet.
@@paulinaarteaga1720 I decided to check it because of people saying it's good. 5:58 in and I gave up. The movie itself is treated as a parody and tries to be fun in the dumbest ways. That's not what Romeo and Juliet is about. Ram and Leela: Love and Bullets is a better modern Romeo and Juliet adaptation. Why? Because it isn't treated as a parody of Shakespeare. I don't understand why Shakespeare should be boring and hard to understand when theater was meant for everyone including the illiterate majority, it is made in a way to be understood by everyone.
"Let's lips do what hands do" and "Give me my sin again." are the very best. (One) beautiful song. (Two) beautiful lovers. (Three) beautiful voices - Romeo, Juliet, and the singer Leonardo. A beautiful scene filled with beautiful details. Simply perfect!!!
especially the new one that was complete crap. they changed almost all the dialogue and even added weird scenes. i mean who does that? thats like slapping shakespeare in the face and being like "nope this is better" when actually its complete garbage
Well, the melody is indeed touching. Personally, tears come to me almost every time I hear the song. But considering lyrics I wouldn't say it's an anthem to love, quite the opposite. It's clearly a heads up to reality, reminding how ephemeral the beauty of youth and their passions are.
I am overjoyed every time I see this video! I am profoundly blessed! Not only did God grant me my prayer that I find my Juliet, I dated and married my Juliet and we are now married 48 years! I was 16 and she was 17, when we met, just like the 2 actors in this 1968 movie! And we dated at the end of 1970! My advice to parents is to don’t easily dismiss love at a young age! Everything was stacked against us! But we stayed together and thrived! To God be the glory! True love is love, whatever age!
Perfect. Flawless. He had his young cast spend a lot of time getting to know each other before filming started. And his famous attention to nuance...wow. Guy was a straight up genius.
My mother took me to see this movie while I was a bit younger than the actors in the movie. I was stunned by Zefferelli's cinematic touch. I still remember how it moved me way back in the late sixties. It was so different from American movies of the period to me.
Redcat S. That Leonardo was awful. Could never understand why that Queen and drug dealer was the black sheep, I mean he's not even related to either family, obviously
@shell When I first saw the 1996 version as a kid, I was confused why the boy (Leonardo) was so much more beautiful than the girl (Claire Danes) lol. I think it's because Leonardo's features were very delicate while Claire has more mature and broader features so she appears older so I was confused why the girl looks older than the guy (as I kid I assumed the guy was the older one, which is typically true). I actually thought the same about Leonardo and Kate in Titanic. 😂
This version is the most beautiful version ever and to see how love becomes real for them at first sight this is what true love is 😍and this song is sooo amazing especially the guy singing...

ugh i love it so much. i first saw this film in 8th grade I'm still obsessed and heavily adore and admire them both. this is my favorite movie and this song though!!!!!!! i love singing this song its so beautiful
I was 14 years old when I watched this at the theatre. My boyfriend and I resembled both. (the reason why I fell for him) lol.. The good old days. Thank you!
Cool. I have seen a lot of comments of people who said that they saw this film when Romeo and Juliet was in theaters with their boy friends when they were 14 or somewhere in their teenage years😊
I was 15, the same age as Olivia, when my 9th grade English class made this a class trip. We saw it at Essex Green Cinema, West Orange, New Jersey. I bought the soundtrack album and listened to it over and over again. I'd rerun the movie in my head to the soundtrack. Nino Rota also scored The Godfather, and you can hear his signature in this very scene. At fifteen, I didn't appreciate the costuming, but oh my, just look at the details in their full glory. I love the use of the reds for the hot-heated Capulets, and the muted blues for the Montagues. I have this film on DVD and it is the only version I will watch. It was the first time that actors played the parts that were more in line with Shakespeare's characters ages. This film is a masterpiece of sight, sound, and acting.
Saw in the 9th grade. They met that night, married next morning, Romeo is banished for killing Tibolt, that night Romeo & Juliet spent the night together. By the 4th day he thinks she's dead. He drinks poison & she stabs herself. All this took place in about 4 days. The movie is still a classic. I went &bought it, so I watch it a lot. I can almost say both of their lines by heart now. NO other movie can replace it. The remakes will never compare. There was never a tale of more woe than of Juliet & her Romeo. That's not the exact phrase. Peace & Love !!!!
What is a youth? Ask anyone who has lived. The attraction of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is that all of us can remember that moment in our young lives of that burning in your heart and soul for the first one you love. That First Taste of mad, crazy love never leaves you. Of all Shakespeare's plays, those filled with greed, cunning, avarice, hate and revenge there is nothing like remembering that first kiss akin to that shown above and the heart pounding excitement you feel of finally being alive and believing that this love was your purpose for living.
This is so wonderful! My wife and I met at the same age as these 2 actors, 16 and 17, although she was older and I was younger. I can hear her say some of these lines”Saints don’t move” and holy palms are for palmers’ kiss! We are now married 47 years in May! Who says that Romeo and Juliet doesn’t have a happy ending??👍
Me and my boyfriend also met at those same ages. 16 and 17. He was younger and I was older and although we are almost 22 and 23 I’m so glad we found each other. Though one thing we have that Romeo and Juliet didn’t have is our family’s support.
@@k8magic6 Glad to hear your story! We had family support from my future wife’s parents, but my parents were difficult. I think that the problem was that my mother was still very young when we first dated (42) and had just had her last child. My Mom was only 25 when I was born!
4:40 how captivating how the music reaches its peak, putting the viewer in a state of both excitement and fear. Heartbreakingly beautiful, watching the two seal their fate once they kiss.
My English teacher made us watch this movie back in 10th grade in 2015, and ever since coming across this movie I have been so in love with this scene, its heartbreakingly beautiful, the attractive young casts at the time, the song, the lyrics especially, along with the youthful cadence that shivers the soul. It always touch me in a way every time I watch this scene while singing the song
sing with me fren What is a youth? Impetuous fire. What is a maid? Ice and desire. The world wags on. A rose will bloom It then will fade So does a youth. So do-o-o-oes the fairest maid. Comes a time when one sweet smile Has its season for a while...Then love's in love with me. Some may think only to marry, Others will tease and tarry, Mine is the very best parry. Cupid he rules us all. Caper the cape, but sing me the song, Death will come soon to hush us along. Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall. Love is the pastime that never will pall. Sweeter than honey...and bitter as gall Cupid he rules us all A rose will bloom It then will fade So does a youth. So do-o-o-oes the fairest maid.
I fell in love with this version of Romeo and Juliet at age of....I guess....13! It was a time, where were just 3 channels to choose on tv. My parents were at friends in the neibourghhood and I discovered it late at evening. From then on, I was a huge fan of that movie and of Shakespeare as well! I searched my whole youth for this film again, but can't found or missed it on tv, and just 5 or 5 Years ago, I ordered the DVD! Finally I'm able to watch it, whenever I'm in the mood! :-)
I'm with you. I'm in my mid sixties. I was a rocker, and still am to a degree and funk. I'm learning how to appreciate this type of music. I like listening to soundtracks from older movies.
Classic Movie and I absolutely love this song. This movie was introduced to me by my English teacher Mr. Calabrese in the 90s and it has stuck with me every since. I hope all is well with him. I appreciate him.💕
Balcony Scene probably will go in cinema history as an example for new young students to learn acting. How Zeffirelli pulled that out of these kids is beyond me. Unfortunately people seldom give credit to the director.
I love romances, but most aren't that interesting. But this performance is just brilliant! You can FEEL the jitter in their bodies and voices, they act like real damn teenagers in love!! AND GODS THE MUSIC!!
So beautiful. I'd been a bit stoked about the Julian Fellowes version, but when I watched the trailer it just felt wrong and made me want to watch this one again. Nothing can top Olivia and Leo... I don't even know why they try.
The best movie in my entire life - and I have seen almost all the masterpieces of worl's cinematography - I may judge it, more with my heart than my own brain - still I never get tired of it,...never,...
Olivia was so beautiful and her skin tone is so gorgeous! The love Romeo and Juliet had for each other was so special and mesmerizing! ❤️❤️❤️ I love this movie! ❤️
I remember watching this in high school (in the 90's). Thinking I was too cool for this movie but as I got more involved in the film I just loved this adaptation of this Shakespeare play. After seeing Olivia Hussey for the first time I was like.....whoa, she is beautiful....such a great film
Olivia Hussey RIP - my favorite R&J version ever!
“A rose will bloom, it then will fade…” Olivia Hussey will be greatly missed! Best R&J adaptation ever!
I love that in this version Juliet is kind of unsure about him until she sees his face and she goes "oh wow he's hot, I can roll with this..."
+lpycb42 No kidding. OMG he was so beautiful!!!
He was breath taking. Especially when Juliet saw him unmasked. Wow!!
The man who sings is not Leonardo.
Agreed

sharon dianne Spoiler alert??
HoyaSaxaSD, my thoughts exactly.
Scooter The Lost Duckling lol. If there’s a statute of limitations on spoiler alerts, several hundred years probably exceeds it.
And he's not a cry baby, either, like Leonardo s awful performance
Di Caprio,is incapable of delivering an awful performance,he's one of America's finest Actors. However,Shakespeare,is best done in an English accent...
By far best R&J movie ever made.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR BEAUTIFUL AND TRUE COMMENT
The master Zefferelli - there is no better.
I saw this in the cinema 18 times.
Wow
Wow wow
lucky
omg the moment at 1:12 just cracks me up. Idk... i just love the little exchange of glances between Juliet and the tall lady.
The tall lady is Emma.
Yeah it's a bit awkward.
what cracks me up at that second is the guy behind them in the red hat shifting his eyes XD !!
I think that tall woman who exchanged looks with Juliet is Rosalind. One of Romeo's love interest but she is not really into him.
That lady is incredibly beautiful.
Frida, you're right.
Absolutely friggin love this song AND scene!
Some movies and songs never die and they keep our feelings with them.
BEST MOVIE EVER HANDS DOWN NO QUESTION!!!!!!!!
It's just perfect, isn't it?!
This is a Masterpiece! No other rendition of film has ever matched it... in my opinion. Thank you for posting this exquisite Art!
I sat at a desk in 1993 when she asked me if they were in love. I have never forgotten this track nor this scene. I was asked to read his lines.
Me! It's 2016 n they both still take my breath away. Favorite movie ever!
The best Romeo & Juliet ever. Such a shame Leonard and Olivia didn’t have the careers Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes had .
I cry every damn time!!!!
4:40 how captivating how the music reaches its peak, putting the viewer in a state of both excitement and fear. Heartbreakingly beautiful, watching the two seal their fate once they kiss.
Totally disgraceful that Nina Rota did not win the Oscar for best music in 1968, he was robbed. The complete soundtrack is just so beautiful.
My English teacher made us watch this movie back in 10th grade in 2015, and ever since coming across this movie I have been so in love with this scene, its heartbreakingly beautiful, the attractive young casts at the time, the song, the lyrics especially, along with the youthful cadence that shivers the soul. It always touch me in a way every time I watch this scene while singing the song
sing with me fren
What is a youth? Impetuous fire.
What is a maid? Ice and desire.
The world wags on.
A rose will bloom
It then will fade
So does a youth.
So do-o-o-oes the fairest maid.
Comes a time when one sweet smile
Has its season for a while...Then love's in love with me.
Some may think only to marry, Others will tease and tarry,
Mine is the very best parry. Cupid he rules us all.
Caper the cape, but sing me the song,
Death will come soon to hush us along.
Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall.
Love is the pastime that never will pall.
Sweeter than honey...and bitter as gall
Cupid he rules us all
A rose will bloom
It then will fade
So does a youth.
So do-o-o-oes the fairest maid.
Thank you for this😊
I fell in love with this version of Romeo and Juliet at age of....I guess....13!
I picked it up yesterday at a Charity shop,for a quid.......What a bargain...
BRAVO I LOVBE SHAKESPEARE TOO AND THIS FILM IS UTTERLY TRUE TO HIM AND SOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL
zefirelli was a genius
Forever in love with this movie
I'm with you. I'm in my mid sixties. I was a rocker, and still am to a degree and funk. I'm learning how to appreciate this type of music. I like listening to soundtracks from older movies.
Classic Movie and I absolutely love this song. This movie was introduced to me by my English teacher Mr. Calabrese in the 90s and it has stuck with me every since. I hope all is well with him. I appreciate him.💕
So beautiful....the film, and of course both actors of Romeo and Juliet!
Yet, I never saw a man of such a beauty!
My heart both aches and smiles when watching this. Such beauty
Ageless...Timeless.
Balcony Scene probably will go in cinema history as an example for new young students to learn acting. How Zeffirelli pulled that out of these kids is beyond me. Unfortunately people seldom give credit to the director.
I love how Lana Del Rey's Old Money is based on this!
and Rue's whistle from the Hunger Games....
agenttheater5 damn, i knew it reminded me of something!
she actually wrote the song not knowing she was referencing this at first
@@agenttheater5 whaaa omg I didn’t know this
I love romances, but most aren't that interesting.
I AGREE
The best movie in my entire life - and I have seen almost all the masterpieces of worl's cinematography - I may judge it, more with my heart than my own brain - still I never get tired of it,...never,...
LOVELY
My favorite movie song ever since i was 11 years old!
One of my favorite movie scenes ever!
This song gets to the point of the reality of life quite plainly
So perfectly acted, far beyond the diminishing returns of distant countenance.
Yes I still watch and cry, it is Beautiful as always. I saw this in a theatre when I was 14. 💕🌸❤🕊🦋🌺👍🏻😊
pure art
PERFECT FILM! Thank you Maestro Zeffirelli! Thank you Maestro Rota.
This song is the only reason I could watch this movie.
As the young man sings, everyone is so happy and ready to fall in love!
