The only problem with this is, that I like to drink coffee because it makes me shit well in the morning

Coffee dumps are the best. I get a lot of reading done on the porcelain throne 😉

azmanabdula But they already covered caffeine addiction is an earlier video, and I'm pretty sure they've already covered the sleep-wake cycle and if not then we can always ask down here.
The main problem with in-depth topics in one video is it becomes less fun to learn for the every man and the more fun it is, the easier it is to retain.

Yeah. They know how to explain things really well. I am grateful for that.☺️

I should try to get my mom to watch this. She's a nurse, and since they work twelve hour shifts, she drinks a LOT of coffee
***** wtf???????????????//
TWELVE HOUR SHIFTS?! In Norway you would go to jail for working so long..!
baryonyx31 I often work 14 hours a day occasionally longer.
baryonyx31 I've worked substantially longer shifts. Sometimes exceeding an entire day...
baryonyx31 In my country there's such a crisis for lack of doctors that the doctors constantly go through all nighters in the main hospital, they some times work 26 hours straight.
I really wish our country could invest more money into healthcare... Sadly, we need to invest most of the budget on essential things, which leaves no budget to improve the current system, and only enough to sustain the current situation.
Through many painfully non-productive days I figured this out. I replaced my morning coffee with a protein/fruit smoothie and green tea at 11:30am and it has made all the difference. Its nice to see a video confirming my theories. The great thing is when I have a day off I drink a coffee and since I haven't had one in a long time I really feel that happy coffee buzz on my day off.
Can you explain allergic reactions in a video?
Why can't they be more inclusive. "between 8 & 9 a.m." *Assuming you wake up at what time?! Assuming you sleep how many hours?!*
I agree
I think he meant the cortisol releases at those times, regardless of other factors.
Correct me if I'm wrong though, that's what I thought at least. :)
***** assuming your usual schedule doesnt involve going to bed at 2-3 am and so one
***** At 1:20 he explains that your cortisol levels and circadian rhythm in general are mostly regulated by sunlight rather than your actual sleep schedule.
mikei4455 and in all countries the duration of sunlight is the same? in some countries sunlight peaks at 10AM and in others, the sun is barely out for half an hour so apparently this is way too abstract. guys this is ASAPscience not a published scientific book, a lot of information on this channel is wrong and it's fine since it is free entertainment.

What is really the effect of violence in Video Games? I personally feel like it doesn't desensitize me to actual violence, but can you guys please answer this?
Violent video games don't desensitize you as long as you are able to distinguish that the violence in the game isn't the same thing as violence in the real world. Usually when people commit crimes or acts of violence because of video games their brains have become wired to believe that violence will make them feel good so they commit crimes to get a happiness buzz. This is because of the fact that when playing games you score when you do something bad and your brain starts to make connections tell you that doing these things make you happy. You try harder and harder to win and feel happy forming an addiction. This process is very similar to how gambling addictions form/work
zanzy654 Violent video games doesn't create psychopaths. Psychopaths play violent video games.
Shawna Kay Yes, the world is very peaceful now compared to earlier times in history.

Coffee actually makes me really sleepy :/
Thank you for including the bit about waking up very late or early. I tend to wake up later in the day than most people (around 10AM on a work day) so waiting an hour is much easier to remember than trying to adjust for time of awakening.
The art is just awesome! :D

You should make a video on does trimmin/ cutting your hair increases rate of hair growth
AsapSCIENCE
Sanjana Elangovan It doesn't, I can just tell you right there. It gets rid of split ends and fairy knots, etc. to make your hair look fuller (because usually the ends are see-through and raggedy when it's time for a trim) and helping you RETAIN length (not grow hair faster) thus aiding it making your hair longer.
Sanjana Elangovan that's a myth.
That i what I said, but my friends/ family don't believe me
My cortisol must be a troll then, the levels only peek AFTER I smell coffee brewing.
The Beauty Neuron That's placebo effect right there my friend.
Or if you've done it enough it could be your body expecting the coffee's effects. Although if that were true that's pretty sad, just saying

Litagano Motscoud Yeah, the guy whose comment I replied too.
I love this channel, usually shared then on my FB! So good info!
You could address then, when will be best to drink the last cup of coffee :)
If you liked this video, you may also want to know that there's research out there saying that coffee makes heart and vessel disease (cardiovascular disease) worse because it raises LDL cholesterol, but that’s not the whole story! We now know that LDL particles can either be large and buoyant, or small and dense. When LDL particles are large and buoyant, they can help decrease risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). And coffee can transition LDL particles from small and dense to large and buoyant, decreasing CVD risk!
Really usefull information, thank you.
Hah, three pm is actually when I enjoy a cup of coffee. Sweeeeeeet.

Could you do a video on dreams and how even though they can be extremely vivid when you have them and first wake up, you can forget them so easily. Love your channel, I keep telling all my students about it.
As the summer holiday season is here and many people travel abroad can you guys make a video about coping with different time zones (like how to adjust with them quickly and avoid being sleepy during the day, etc.)? Thanks!
Coffee, energy drinks, anything, doesn't ever wake me up...
me too
You say Cortisol levels go up 50% right after you wake up, but you give no reference to how much they increase during those three times a day they do. How am I supposed to relate those? Also, an I to believe that cortisol increases in people based on the time and not at all in correlation to their sleep patterns? Does my Cortisol go up around 9:00 A.M. if I go to bed at 5:00 A.M. and sleep until noon?
We need a little more Science and a little less ASAP, because it is getting to the point where I feel like you are just trying to make quick topical videos and not actually educate or inform. I just feel like you guys should go a bit more in depth because each video brings up one good point, and then blathers on through the rest and only raises questions.
Barth Slung then search yourself, because i dont think you know how much time it takes to make a video.
That's what I am doing now actually lol. The problem is that these videos are essentially worthless because they don't take the time to do enough for it to be relevant or memorable. If you aren't going to spend the 80 hours to do it "right", then don't spend the 40 hours to just get something out there. At least with channels like MinutePhysics and MinuteEarth they are full of information and tie it together.
Barth Slung
yea but this channel is just about little facts imo
I'm aware. That is what I already said. I'm saying that is a problem. They could be so much more informative. As a teacher I'd love to use these in class because I knownthe kids would enjoy the drawings and the style, but I can't justify showing them these videos because there will be hardly anything for them to retain and no relevance to help them retain it.
Such little information in such a rugged package. It has a great style and could be so, so much more
I agree they should add a little more science and a bit less ASAP... They don't need to cover everything but they should cover their basics at least with a few common questions about the topic
You guys are the best! I am putting together a workshop in which students will analyze the caffeine content of beverages of their choice, and this video will be perfect to include in my intro discussion. Also, it turns out that, just by chance, I do happen to consume my coffee correctly most of the time. Who would have guessed that my kids are doing me a favor by waking me up at 5am? They give me a chance to drink my coffee around 6am so I am alert for my commute. Thanks for all the great videos!
ahaah well coffee is the reason why im up this late when i have school tmr (12:50am)
I really love AsapSCIENCE ur videos are really good and very helpful. luv ya guys
Question: Why can we consume some meats raw or partially cooked (rare) but not others?
I quit drinking coffee about 5 weeks ago and I feel much more energetic than before. I'm not sleepy at school anymore and my eyelid twitching has stopped too. It was one of the best decisions I've made in my life.
I'm pretty nocturnal, so I think I've been doing okay! But this was really interesting to watch - great job, guys!
Most of my coffee intake is between 5am and 9am most days but by that point I have been awake since at least 8pm the night before and will be going to bed from 11am to 2pm...I think I'm doing it right! I've always found that drinking coffee at the beginning of my day led to me feeling tired a few hours later when the effects wore off so I drink coffee just after the middle of my day to maximize it's effect.
What happens in the morning is your body is using your adrenal capacity to make cortisol. Cortisol helps to raise blood pressure, so when you get up you dont get a drop in brain blood pressure which makes you pass out. Having salt (0.5/1.0 teaspoon dissolved in a glass of water) helps your adrenals. One of the ways your blood pressure rises (aka morning cortisol production) is by changing the ratio of sodium to potassium.
So with all this said, please feel free to drink coffee after having your biology supporting cup of saltwater. ENJOI.

Hey guys, I love your videos.. I have a video suggestion: The science of learning.. and techniques we can use to learn more efficiently.
thanks for this helpful video
when I wake up I don't think of coffee I think of more sleep It is because I am 11 years old
I was wondering why coffee doesn't work on some people, like myself. I'll drink coffee, I'll drink five coffee cups, and all I do is get sleepy. Even if I am energetic enough, and just drink some coffee because I like it, it'll make me sleepy. It's not just me, there's a whole community too.
Same I get tired as well. It fucks up my sleeping pattern as well. It's probably genetic why it doesn't work on some or chemically to do with our brains. Either way, I don't care for it and don't need it
Willow4526 Glad to see I'm not alone. I don't feel anything from coffee, I don't get tired nor am I more awake. Energy drinks on the other hand make me work much faster and be over all more active. I don't really get it since there's more caffeine in coffee, maybe it's the sugar :'D
Diana Nataly That's odd, it's the complete opposite for me. I ONLY drink coffee when I'm extremely tired or have a really bad headache. When I drink one cup, I gain energy an hour after or so, and as for the headache, it goes away in a few minutes - half an hour. Perhaps everyone is different and your hormone levels produce different reactions with the coffee.
Amalia Cimova getting a headache then coffee fixing it sounds like withdrawal ...... but any way :P yeah probs the hormones
Willow4526 Caffeine is used in drugs like Tylenol to help headaches. I'm also not addicted to coffee, I drink it 2-3 times a month - I strictly use it for extreme headaches or wanting to stay up. The "withdrawal headaches" definitely happen to heavy coffee drinkers which must suck.
Awesome video!!
That was a very interesting video. You did mention that cortisol levels are regulated by sunlight. Does that mean that cortisol peaks are variable in different seasons? For example in the UK there is a big difference in sunlight hours between winter and summer. Do cortisol levels change accordingly and therefore the ideal coffee hours?
I have a question.
How comes, whenever I try to run in my sleep it feels like there are weights dragging me down, causing me to run in slow-mo.
I know its to do with sleep paralysis, but I would love to see you do a video on it. Thank you. :)
Ditto.
It's tough for 9-5 workers. Anyway I have a nice cup of coffee when I want :P
I agree with this video. I used to drink coffee right after waking up but found I would be tired after 3-4 hours. Recently I have been delaying my first cup of coffee to 1-2 hrs after waking up and I feel a lot more energetic throughout the day and I don't have issues with caffeine crashes. Try it
I don't really drink coffee but when I do I put lots of sugar and a bit of milk to change the color.
Either way I still love the smell of Coffee as I walk by it in the supermarkets and such. such a sweet aroma ~
Is there an absolute hot? (Like absolute zero but in heat)
How ever got it was at the instant the Big Bang happened is as hot as it can get.
GhostKnight There is a temperature at which any body would produce waves with wavelength of Planck length. Bringing any more energy to these particles (increasing temperature) would make them emit waves with wavelength shorther than Planck length, which is considered smallest possible distance. You can calculate this temperature from Stefan - Boltzmann law or Black-body radiation laws.
Check the vsauce video how hot can it get
Yes. The temperature equivalent to all atoms in a structure moving at the speed of light. No idea how hot that would be but its safe to say very hot
UnknownXV Wouldn't you need an infinite amount of energy to get those particles moving at the speed of light? In that sense, absolute hot would be infinity (no upper bound).

It would be cool if you guys could do a video on something about how we see ourselves in the mirror being different to how other people see us. Something about perception maybe? I've always wondered if this is actually true! By the way I love your videos!!
yes but what about times past 11:00 pm?
Is there a scienctific reason why we like and dislike certain things?
Isha Hussain That's a very stupid question. Too broad.
Isha Hussain Yes, I believe it has something to do with the reward system. I may be mistaken, though.
what i know is that your cravings for specific foods can mean nutritional deficiencies, for example if you constantly want to eat oranges all the time, your body can be asking for vitamin c. it works a lot like being thristy.
another thing is that if you usually eat a lot of carbohydrates it can be because of a serotonin deficiency. carbs relax you and you feel satisfied. thats why anxious people can use food as a compulsive behavior to treat their anxiety and racing emotions.
and yes if your reward centers in the brain are not working correctly you would unconciously do activites to naturally activate it like eating, sex, gamble.. anything that increases dopamine really
Daniel Idk i was just wondering since i am always happy at school 😊
Thankyou all!! 😛😄😉
The circadian rhythm varies from person to person although external stimuli (daylight) affects (and adjusts) it you can't deal with absolute times here since they can vary even in a daylight synchronized state. And then of course there are distortions, especially since modern times (artificial light, we stay up late to watch tv/internet, get up earlier than we would naturaly, jet lags..). So you have to find your own time to drink coffee.
StYxXx and: When sleeping your room is most likely darkened. So the sunlight can't have any influence then. Meaning you sleep schedule can of course affect it. ;)
Hi, could you do another ' amazing facts to blow your mind' video or answer the question 'what would happen if we stopped eating?' Thank you and I love your channel ☺️💜
Is it true that you should allow ur phone battery to completely die before recharging ur phone? Or is it just a myth?
Added on top of that is it best to let it fully charge before removing it from the charger? Or can you remove it before 100% without negative affects on your battery?
Ansh Bhatia Every once in a while you want to. Modern batteries need that full recharge every once in a while to calibrate so they can accurately measure how charged they are. The best way to get the most life from your battery is to charge it at the 50% to 75% range. You also want to avoid leaving it on the charger when it is fully charged since fully charged batteries have a higher voltage, and keeping it at higher voltages lowers the life of the battery.
You can remove it before 100% charge without negative effects. You would still want to do a full charge from dead every once in a while in order to keep the battery calibrated correctly. As to how often that is needed varies from different sources, but at least once a month is preferred.
Myth. I've always done both and my phone battery life has remained relatively the same for the 4 years I've had it. It lasts anywhere from 4-5 hours of use time. Any drop in battery life is probably just due to age, as batteries become less effective over time.
zanzy654 I read once that fully discharging or charging disrupts the chemical balance that usually goes back and forth. So plugging out before 100% is better. But dont remember for what kind of battery this was.
Ansh Bhatia
For modern Lithium Ion batteries, it's a myth.
Interesting to know ;)

2- it protects your body cells from cancer

1) Apple is better than Coffee for that.
2) Citation needed from reliable source.
Shubham Gupta I think people drink it because they get addicted?
Yuuki Hamasaki Why do they drink it in the first place ? :P
How accurate is this, really? I mean, doesn't a person's peak vary by their internal clock? More specifically, wouldn't it be different for people based on the time they awaken? If one person normally woke at 5:00, another woke at 6:00, another at 7:00, and so forth, wouldn't that mean they had different peak periods? If someone starts their day at 2:00 or 3:00 am and finishes their work day by 11:00 am, wouldn't they have a different peak period than someone who starts their work day at 9:00 or 10:00 am? I normally have a very early work shift and am often finished before most people even start their work day. It sounds to me like you are basing this on a very specific wake up time and work day, which really is misinforming people whose lives don't fall into that pattern. If you were more general, or rather more specific, in your terms by saying something like "a person's peak period begins when they wake, lasts for an hour and repeats every three hours", this would be a statement that would be more measurable and infinitely more useful to the general populace. I thank you for your endeavors. I just wish they were more flexible so I could apply them to my life.
thats why he said at the end part that wait 1 hour regardless of the time..
can you talk more about short-term/long-term memory? why some people remember better than others? or perhaps dive into photographic memory
Haha, yes, Bingo! My coffee drink plan is right!
I've been drinking it at the right time ever since. No wonder if I don't have any sleep schedule problems. (except when I feel depressed, of course, I'm also a human). I'm probably addicted but I just love to taste many different kinds of coffee brew.
An hour after waking up, (assuming Americans woke at 8 or 7:30, that's 9 after an hour, while I wake up at 5 and drinking it at around 6 and 7 after breakfast) check.
After the noon break, check. Break at 12-13. After it? I'm not drinking it except for overtime. Sleep at around 20-21. With a cup of milk, and then I wake up like a baby.
Caffeine last for 5 hours, and I'm not drinking more than a cup of coffee a day, of course except overtime, or probably sometimes, a tea time.

Wow, this is pretty interesting. I've been drinking one cup of coffee (about an hour after waking up) every morning for the past 10 years and I've never felt like I'm dependent on caffeine the way some of my co-workers are when I see them arrive to work at 8 AM, looking like 0:55, and making a beeline to the kitchen for that pot of coffee that the secretary made that morning.
You explained in that other video about the build up of these receptors in the brain. How long does it take for these receptors to start building up? Of course I am aware that it very much depends on the dosages, times, personal reaction etc, but just approximately?
And how long would it take for them to decrease again when you stop coffee? Approximately of course.
Thanks for the great vids by the way!
I love ur videos

Hey AsapSCIENCE! Great video, thanks for sharing. But one thing did jump out at me. You mentioned all the other times throughout the day which cortisol levels are active/released, due to the presence of sunlight/daylight? I work in sort of a basement area, with no windows (only florecent lighting)...is this affecting my natural cortisol levels? Sometimes I do go for a second up for coffee during the day (double shot even) but I try never to have more than 2 short blacks!
YES!!! I have been drinking it correctly!
Hi!
Your videos are awesome! Very creative!

i only occasional have drinks with caffeine. i mostly drink water, because it doesn't do much for me because i rarely feel tiered, unless i have only had 3-4 hours of sleep in the week. then i feel tiered. it helps that i don't like coffee too though
i think this all has to do a lot with time perception as well! i stopped drinking my morning coffee last week and my days went by WAY faster. i would drink my cup around 3 and the last 2 hours of the day flew by! ^_^
I have two questions, one if cortisol affects your fight or flight reaction does that mean that coffee can make you more or less brave and two (I read this online somewhere) do you actually see yourself 5x more beautiful then you actually are?
Does the cortisol/adenosine peak adjust with an individual's circadian rhythm? For example; when working 3rd shift regularly for a prolonged period (decade or two) the circadian shifts accordingly, can we hypothesize the corticoids will peak at the same intervals in relation to sleep/wake?
Also, how do temporary variations effect the levels (vacation, shift changes, caring for a newborn when there is little REM achieved)?
Hello, this was really super informative. Any chance you can share the software you used to make this cool video? Thanks.
If you found this video informative, you may also want to know that there's research out there saying that coffee makes heart and vessel disease (cardiovascular disease) worse because it raises LDL cholesterol, but that’s not the whole story! We now know that LDL particles can either be large and buoyant, or small and dense. When LDL particles are large and buoyant, they can help decrease risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). And coffee can transition LDL particles from small and dense to large and buoyant, decreasing CVD risk!
When I had a job last summer, I often found midday was the time I would become extremely sleepy and I needed an energy drink to keep going.
