When to DRINK Coffee - Scientist explains (time of day)

- What is the best time of the day to drink coffee? Did you know that drinking coffee as soon as you wake up, isn’t actually that beneficial? When you wake up, you feel exhausted and groggy, but whether you have coffee or not, within 30 mins, you already feel awake enough to shower, get up, and get your day started, why? The beautiful stress hormone called CORTISOL. Caffeine and cortisol have similar physiological “awakening” effects on our bodies. Caffeine actually boosts Cortisol levels, amongst other things. Because cortisol peaks when we wake up, the effects of drinking caffeine immediately are partially negated. Instead if you wait till later when cortisol drops, you will feel the effects even more!

Let me know if you have tried this? There is some variation for each individuals so you will have to test it one. We don't know if this holds for shift work employees/night shifters but it would be interesting to know (seeing as so many healthcare workers love a good cup of #coffee).

😜
Thanks😂
You’re a hero
Love it! Been telling all my med school people to hold off on the coffee till later!!
sounds like you already knew!
This man needs more subscribers! Such great value and effort.
Maybe I should make more videos then
Been drinking between 10-11 or 3-4, because I feel the caffeine works best at these times. Didnt know theres a whole science based explanation behind it! Cool!
These are the BEST times👍🏼
At which time did you wake up in the morning, when you were drinking caffeine at these times?
I’d say it’s much better to drink your coffee around 10-11am and stay away from it for the rest of your day because it may cause sleep problems due to the fact that it takes about 12h for average body to metabolize caffeine. But everyone is different 😊
Half life is 5-6 hrs so yep! After 10-12 hours you will still have about 25% in your body due to first order pharmacokinetics
I learned this when I use to drive trucks. If you have to drive 700 miles starting at 7, you should wait until 12ish so it can work.
haha I use to do that when I would drive long distances for work! that first cup, after a few hundred miles, was clutch (no pun intended)
Watching this video at 10 AM with my coffee ☕ and thanks for such a straight forward information with less wastage of time!
Best coffee ever! Trinidad and Tobago’s Grounded Field coffee from Lasalle Trace, Biche. Boiled in an old time enamel cup, black! Now when you drink that! You don’t eat all day and you work with an alertness and precision 😮There’s just no other😊!
Wow 😯... small change up now. Was doing 9-11:30 and 1-4pm.
Gotcha...10-12 and 2-4pm.
The white board idea is lit!🔥
5:49 the vid starts
I know it's terrible, but my favorite coffee as of late is the instant coffee from Food City that I keep at work. I'll have it around 9-10 and sometimes a second cup around 230-3p. I guess I'm doing something right. Thank you for the video!
haha you already knew!
I developed my own method for brewing. I drink 186ml about 2 hours after waking. I sleep nine hours. Interesting video.
Man, really surprised to see that this channel just had about 2k subs, I thought i saw 2 Millions. But it will come since the content is so good :) Keep it up brother!
Sounds like I need to make videos again then 😂
Why have you stopped making videos? You were doing an amazing job. All the videos are very informative and easy to understand as you explained everything in a very good manner. You should start making videos and this time you should keep consistency. Consistency is the key. All the best 👍
Very great idea that no one talks about thank you so much . I'm excited to try this for the whole week ☺
Your video was very helpful. Keep making more. Loved it❤️❤️
I have also made a different video on coffee check it out some time ❤️❤️
ruclips.net/video/jzdS02rlEpk/видео.html
great vid man keep up the good work
I was just sitting here thinking I could use a cup of coffee, but I don’t want to drink it too late in the day. Thanks for hooking me up.
I’d love to see a video on the different types of caffeine from different sources, and how they differ in their affects on the body, e.g tea vs green tea vs cocoa vs coffee
That'd be a good one to do! Most of the differences are from the other ingredients in the drinks and not necessarily the caffeine!
Frank Cusimano thanks for the reply, ahh okay I’m guessing it’s like the L-theanine in green tea working in sync with the caffeine etc?, also to add in another potential topic of discussion, I heard of a paper published a while ago (sorry I can’t remember what it was called) where there was a potential that sulforaphane and L-Theanine can increase the rate of caffeine elimination from the body, I think by upregulating the liver CYP enzyme group, which if true may be helpful for those occasions of later caffeine intake so not to affect sleep, is there any truth in this?
Yes please do videos on those topics 🙌🏻
haha they are on the list! Thank you
Great video!! Always great to see a fellow La Colombe Coffee lover. Would you mind linking the grinder + brewer/filter you use?
I love my chemex, you have to buy chemex specific filters but it's worth it. As for the grinder, it was cheap, bought it about 10 years ago, doesn't grind evenly. www.amazon.com/shop/dr.cusimano/?listId=29KLOWQK1FXFI&ref=cm_sw_tw_r_inf_list_own_dr.cusimano_dp_Wp2oTpiNPJFkg
Am I the only one still using a old school coffee maker?
A perker old still
Nope, thats what i use to
I have also made another video on coffee check it out sometime :)
ruclips.net/video/jzdS02rlEpk/видео.html
No, Sir! I use the regular old school one, the drip & an espresso machine. I take my pick each day. The old school is the least time consuming.
I use instant, but only really because I have a tiny kitchen so it would take up way too much space to have a big machine 😅 old coffee machines feel nice but they’re a pain

Thank you very informative! Please make more videos.
Will be doing more! Thank you!
Come to Miami and have a Cuban coffee . Great video I am going to follow you advise thanks
Fantastic video, thanks!! Look forward to new content 😄
Thanks for this video❤️love it!
You are so welcome! than you for commenting
Wow, what a great video! Very informative. Please, can you a couple of videos on the link between coffee (or caffeine) and cancer or coffee and male productivity?
Good video, but you should also mention how caffeine has a half life. Every hour, your caffeine level will reduce by half, which in the end translate itself to the following guideline:
Drink your last cup of caffeinated drink around 13-14h. Taking any caffeine after that (and considering you go to bed around 22h), will greatly reduce your sleep quality.
You will be able to sleep, but it will be "bad" quality sleep.
There's also a whole proven science about it that's quite interesting.
Thank you for the information. It was insightful🎉
Love the video keep up the good work
I once had a weird experience that after I drink some coffee, the effect is not obvious (still feel kinda sleepy) and if I drink more, I will pee more for obvious metabolism reasons. But I tried another coffee (together with my friend) we both feel that coffee is really effective, and interestingly, it does not make us wanna pee. Not sure why or how... the only difference is that the coffee I tried with me friend is freshly ground from whole beans, and anything else are just cheap columnbia ground coffee from Walmart...
Thanks for your information 🖤
I love this video, great help! May i please ask.. is our sleep affected by the total amount of caffeine in our blood or the time at which we had that caffeine?
So if i love coffee and i want it to effect me the least, I should drink it right when i wake up.
To explain, I absolutely love the taste of coffee but don’t want it to affect my sleeping or overstimulate me and inhibit clear thinking.
I get up at 4 AM every day so that I can be at the gym for a workout at 5 AM, and then off to work by 6:30 AM (5 days a week)
decaf...half caf
Right, wrong video for me...I just drink it for the taste...😂
If it were about caffeine I’d just go for pills. Better control over dosage.
But I’ll still consider your advice. Thanks for sharing!
I might be wrong here, but wouldn’t relative timing be a lot more useful than the strict timeline provided in your video since people wake up and sleep at different times of the day (or night)?
And to answer your question: my favourite coffee would probably be specialty coffee like Colombian brewed by using some pour over method.
I love the way he makes his video with coffee that’s wao
Can you please make a video on : " what should be an ideal duration between having water in the morning coffee and consuming milk after having coffee" and is it safe to have milk 20mins after having coffee ?
Please do pen down...
Coffee has been my ever favorite drink.❤❤❤
I have an question here
1.If I add fresh milk in my black coffee(/w no sugar) do caffeine still work for my body?
2.Do caffeine increase if u add sugar in black coffee?
3.Do you have any recommend % for coffee and milk?
I use to slept late, like I sleep from 3.am~8am and I have my black coffee(w/ milk)at 8:30am, every time I started to feel sleepy after 12am, so I usually take a nap for an hour. Even I took a nap I still feel sleepy, as a graduate student I dont really have time to waste, and caffeine is just what I need!!!! Please give me some advice.
Ps: Sorry I am not a nature English speaker, if there is any Grammar issues, I apology's
Last but not least , I like your video, thanks for the effort.
I actually include all of your answers in detail in this video about coffee watch it sometime and let me know what you think
ruclips.net/video/jzdS02rlEpk/видео.html
Sometimes i love expresso coffee.🥰thanks for sharing tips
That is interesting news, when I was on day 6 of swapping Teeccino herbal coffee for real coffee someone offered me a black tea I drank about noon, that night I was exhausted - fell asleep early, slept like 11 hours. But mostly just giving up on coffee made my sleep better and feel deeper
Excellent informative video!
Very long video for such info, I wish u share the info in the intro and save our time and focus
Definitely should not be consuming caffeine after 12. Caffeines half life is 6-7 hours, so the quarter life is 12-14 hours. This seriously messes with derp and rem sleep
I do like just a simple Americano, medium to dark roast is my preference. At home I use the French press which is quick and easy. Both I like to drink black and it seems I’ve been having mine an hour too early 🕰 even though I wait at least two hours after getting up to have my first cup. Starting tomorrow I’ll try the 10-12 window. Thanks :)
Love me some black coffee! French press and all. As long as you wait a few hours after waking up, you should be good! Let me know how it goes!
@@FrankCusimano what if your wake time is 4am does this change the time I should drink coffee?
@@triniguy88 yes, adapt for your wake time and personal circadian rhythm
I grind beans from my friends at Mahina Mele farms in Hawaii, could prob use a better grinder! French press every day and save some a.m. brew for an iced coffee after lunch. Great video, thanks!
Wow Frank; a doctorate in Nutrition and Metabolic Biology, is passionate about all things science, art, medicine, nutrition, and fitness. So awesome!!!!
First off, my favorite coffee? Well, lately I've been buying/drinking a organic cold brew named, Bizzy.
I have a question about wine: So, because of the alcohol, it's actually unhealthy for us, correct?
I drink all the time
I'm actually watching this video because I'm 30 years old and I've never had coffee and I don't drink alcohol but I'm starting to wonder if maybe coffee could help me improve my life because I feel tired all the time so I thought I'd check this video out
how’s it goin?
I drink cofee to study for exams and it really makes a difference, but also when i'd drink it in regular days it made a boost for my productivity
I wake up at 4:30 am for work. I’m still so sleepy at that time no matter what time I go to sleep. Coffee doesn’t help at all. Any suggestions?
Take cold shower
Awesome!!! Thank you
absolutely! thank you so much
Simply put, have breakfast before your have your coffee. Or after any meal at that.
Nice video, coffee doe not work on me. I could take it at 10pm and still be able to sleep, no effect during the day either :) I wanted to suggest you the Illy Coffee (Espresso) try that one if you didn't yet, the taste of that coffee is the best (but you have to prepare it in the Italian way). Also might I ask the software you used to make the graph animation on your computer desk?
haha that use to happen to me when I would drink a lot of coffee. I use to like Illy a lot, until in the US, it was bought by walmart (what I heard). Did all the editing with adobe premiere pro and adobe after affects.
Black coffee and calcium especially calcification is tissue ie ""in~flam henceforth inflammation!😮
I have a feeding tube my time for my coffee frappe blend beverage venti Starbucks.
Would lovee to see more fitness related videos from you
Why would you recommend having caffeine at 4pm? That would disrupt sleep in most people. Even having a coffee at 12pm would mean a quarter of that caffeine is still circulating in your brain at midnight
How about a video on all the fancy gizmos you used to make your coffee, at the start of this video, ( :41 ) and how you use them?
AND you made it proper!
Machines SUCK!
Thanks 😊
It's ture.... Full power information....
Yup. This works.
I'm wondering if this is the same for people who chronically sleep and wake up later. I sleep around 1-2am and wake up around 9. Are the windows the same for me, or is it the time intervals that stay the same, as in, 3-4 hours after waking up?
I wanted to know how some people can have coffee and go to sleep straight away. I have adhd and rely heavily on coffee, but I can never have it at bedtime and be able to function the next day.
Nothing better than a good cup of coffee except A GOOD CUP OF TEA!!! 😂 😂😅
i only allow myself to drink coffee immediately before going to the gym and that'll usually be anywhere from first thing in the morining to mid afternoon. Any later and i might screw up my sleep.
you should have continued making videos
I like my coffee via v60, favorite origin so far is ethiopia masha and their SL varietals
Nah, I need that cup first thing. It’s my comfort food ❤
oh mannn i wish you explained if it's okay to drink coffee after a meal? lot's of contradicting articles online, hard to make your own opinion about it!
I wake at 4.15am but don't drink coffee until after 10am
Does it work only when you sleep a healthy amount of time? I’ll probably sleep 2-4 hours today and the idea of not drinking coffee at least 20 minutes after waking up just makes me feel faintly lol
What time should people who work 3rd shift drink coffee just curious? And thank you for this amazing video 😌👏🙌🏼
very nice
Wasn't your dad Tony Soprano's neighbor?
Missed talking about having coffee on an empty stomach or not
Tl;Dr: between 10 and 12 am
And between 2 and 4 Pm
Awesome!!🧠💖
Thank you 🤗
What if you workout soon after waking? Are there benefits to drink coffee before the workout or would it be best to hold it until 10-12? Thank you! I like your style of video.
??
Instant coffee is my fave 😅
633 subscribers? Now you got 634 bcuz I’m sub
But having coffee around 2-4pm would mess the sleep cycle?
Hi thanks for the video, loved it. So the cortisol drop in the morning happens exactly at 10AM or ~2hrs after waking up?
hey good stuff
My hand keeps on shaking I drink 2 Turkish coffee cups a day
Oh geez, how long did it take you to type this?
please make more videos on coffee!!!!
if I’m working a night shift from 9pm to 7am when’s the best time or time to drink coffee to ensure I stay awake and alert during my shift but can sleep after it ends ?
Can't take coffee while I'm sleeping bro (10-12)
Do you have a professional mic? It seems like there's an echo in tthere.😊
I never have Black coffee on empty stomach and i never drink coffee after 4pm and i Dailey have Black coffee after First meal @3:40am
Drinking coffee could be more beneficial on an empty stomach or full of stomachs?
What type of coffee should we drink? I heard that mixing milk with coffee is not healthy, can you talk about that?
Yes excellent information, thanks so much Frank I am really into your content as I have been Plant based Whole foods for many years now and it cured my Type 2 diabeties. My Doctor was astonished as he had no idea Type 2 diabeties is 100% curable as quoted from Dr Jason Fung. As for coffee I ensure I only drink Organic coffee as I read some time ago that coffee is one of the most sprayed crops in the world.. Grant from South New Zealand
When are you allowed to drink coffee? I am addicted to coffee but my parents aren’t letting me drink any xD When can I drink coffee? Also amazing video!
This is from Time Article: 'The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that kids aged 12 to 18 consume no more than 100 mg of caffeine per day, which is about the amount in a single 8 oz. cup of brewed coffee. But the impact even this moderate amount of caffeine has on young people is less clear than it is for adults.' Hope this helps somehow lol 😂😂💦
Should we drink coffee empty stomach????
Aero press, French press… I have been getting up recently between 4 and 5 o’clock in the morning to exercise and meditate. I was getting up at 6:00 before to just go to work.Doesn’t that make a difference on when my cortisol levels go up and down?
thank you doc!
if you're drinking coffee for taste and not for energy, is it crucial when you drink coffee? i wake up at 6 and don't take my first sip until around 7:30-8. My favorite coffee is a cappuccino! but daily I make coffee for my husband and I in our Moka pot. I also can't handle a ton of coffee, i have about 2 fl.oz of strong coffee a day and that's good for me!
all the time :D coffee is like tea for me haha :D
