When people are in extreme pain and, if taken by ambiance, have been given strong drugs, then unfortunately you will get some kickback. Is a hazzard of the job. If you are getting grief from people who have been in hospital a while and are stabilized then you should report them as this is NOT ON. i was in hospital last year for a back opperation and witnessed a nurse being abused by a patient from the middle east that had no respect for women. She took off straight away and a short while later a group of 3 people came by his bed and gave him a good talking too. It didn't happen again.

I've been drinking iced coffee since middle school because I was so lethargic- I'm in college now and my morning hasn't started until I've had my cup of iced coffee in the morning. I try not to have too much though, one cup a day unless I go out to treat myself. High schoolers having coffee is such a normal thing for me that I was actually surprised to hear him advise against it.
@@ImADolphin True, education is more stressful than ever. I just wished I would have learned to go to bed earlier when I was younger because it is much better in the am.
One thing I find interesting is your advice to see your doctor when you’re sick (which is sound advice). As a Norwegian that would cost me approximately the equivalent of $15, regardless of the nature of the problem. But in the US it is so insanely expensive, particularly if you can’t afford insurance.
It's just been a month, I've started following this channel.. mann everyone's so positive in here. I like the vibe , I like Dr. Varshavski. Great job. Lots of loveee 💋
To the person with occasional chest pain - I also experience this. It's kind of a sharp pain mixed with a tightness, and as you inhale - it gets worse, to the point where it stops your inhalation. I have noticed no patterns as to the trigger / cause. I have however found over time that if I relax myself and inhale very slowly, it will often go away after 2-3 slow breaths. Don't know why it happens - don't know if what I'm doing helps. Just wanted to pass on the info.
@Cory Norell @Wickara It is usually an extra systole. Happens more commonly in women than men, but men with benign arrhythmia may also experience it. What happens is that your heart has an extra beat or skips one due to irregularities in stimuli from the Sinoatrial node (or a stimulous that comes from other electric point of the heart); very common when you sleep less or change your sleeping pattern, overxercise or are on your period (hormonal changes impact electric function). This may be followed by a sharp pain over the heart or chest area. As it forces to beat out of rhythm (I can't for the life of me know if I'm writing this word correctly), you heart needs to reset back to normal, so this contraction will be way more stronger than usual and the next ones may also feel forceful, creating a feeling of tightness. The rest of your chest muscles may compensate and also tighten. This leaves you out of breath (because you respiration is usually in pair with heart beat), it feels like you need to make you work really hard to even get a bit of air inside. The best technique is to not fight it. If you do not relax, anxiety and panic sets in, leading to tachycardia. This means that after the extra beat, your heart will beat faster and faster and get you tired and out of breath. This is a cycle: if you can't breathe, you panic, and if you panic, it is harder to breathe. I've heard about people actually passing out from hyperventilation and anxiety attacks following and extra systole. The best course is what Cory said. Try to relax; the heart resets itself back to normal. The calmer you are, the less likely it is for you to get a new out of place beat. Stress, anxiety and tiredness (as well as being late in the day) are all triggers for extra systoles. Sit down in a comfortable position (don't lay down because it makes it harder to breathe), inhale as if you were smelling a flower (very slow through your nose) and exhale as if blowing a candle (not too forceful, but quick). To me, it also helps to do some chest stretching afterwards, because it feels like I have a contracture over my left chest. You could also have an arrhythmia, but if that's it, you can usually feel your heart beating slower, then very faster, then a lot slower. It also causes pain, tightness and discomfort, but usually doesn't make you unable to breathe because it's less forceful and sudden. It's more like as if you got scared or an adrenaline rush. Anyway, you should check it out at a doctor in case it is a symptom for cardiac disease. But it is usually nothing to worry about. Source: I'm an EMT who also has sharp chest pain occasionally.
@@sorayaimperial Fantastic write-up considering this is a RUclips comment section. Thank you very much! It's always bothered me not knowing what was happening. :)

In reaction to "artificial" caffeine, an interesting fact is most of this actually started out as coffee. Various coffee companies sell the caffeine collected from the decaffeination process. This is how most soft drink companies add caffeine to drinks. Just an interesting FYI. No question that energy drinks or "pre-work out" drinks have other chemicals that our bodies treat as stimulants - none of which are regulated.
This is what it sounds like to me when he answers some of these questions 😂: “Hey Dr. Mike I broke my leg over the past year (haven’t gotten it checked out) its at a 45 degree angle and have been having constant headaches, I cough up blood 24/7 and can barely see out of my left eye, this all started a few months ago, should I go see a doctor?🤔”
I was eating lunch at home while listening to this video, and I randomly turned to look at that screen by pure chance. Long story short: choked on my pasta.
I actually did a small research project on this and most of the evidence found focuses on using screens at night time and how it affects our natural circadian rhythm (our sleep cycle)
It shouldn’t be harmful, but may mess with your sleep. In short, don’t lie in bed, in the dark, on your phone. (Unless the brightness is really low) It causes eye strain because your eyes dilate in the dark, letting in lots of the light.
Hey Dr. Mike, do think you could do a video about therapy? I’ve been considering it a lot lately and I think it’d be great to see a video about to help me get more informed
I'm in college now and I used to complain about sleep deprivation in high school and I wish I never complained. If I had better time management skills I could've gotten 7 hours every night. It was on me. To be fair, I had a circadian disorder of delayed sleep cycle onset. But also, once I was diagnosed, my school would excuse my tardies because of my condition. Again, not their fault a student has a delayed circadian rhythm. And if you're taking 5 APs and have extracurriculars every night, that's on you for overextending yourself, not the school. Sorry for ranting, this comment just reminded me of my past self and past me loved to blame my high school instead of my own time management and not taking responsibility for my condition.

To the girl who asked the question about sore throats every morning: @emmamorrow In high school, i would wake up every day with a sore throat too! I went to an ENT and discovered I had a deviated septum, which caused me to mouth-breathe all night leading to a dry, sore throat in the mornings! I had surgery to correct my septum & the problem is gone. Not saying this is what you have, just an idea!
5:35 I literally experience this everyday for years now. I tried looking at my throat in a mirror, it was just very very dry every time I wake up from long hours of snoring, its like a dried leaf. And a glass of water would fix it everytime. So any of you experiencing this, try fixing the snoring first.

I used to get severe headaches, migraines. Lasted days. I finally went to the doctor. She gave me naproxen, ordered an MRI and told me to drink more water. I have been drinking more water and no more headaches. Never had to use the naproxen and MRI was good.
Being a junior in high school I can say energy is non-existent in my school. With AP classes, extracurriculars, homework, and so much more the teachers have more energy than the students 😂
4:00 also make sure you look under and around your finger and toe nails!!! Melanoma can grow in those areas! Recently got my first skin cancer check and learnt this! Stay sun safe people!!
I second his advice of not doing a lot of caffeine when younger. I didn't do coffee, but I was self medicating my depression with a ton of chocolate in middle school and high school. Besides the weight issues that resulted, I built up a tolerance to caffeine and now have to drink more coffee to get any effect.

Doctor Mike, I know you're an advocate for exercise, but what would you recommend for people whose anxiety severely increases with a raised heartrate (regardless of cause)? Thanks, and I love the show.
KT a good way to start out could be to do some breathing exercises that helps cope with anxiety and panic attack. Just search google to find some and try them out :) If you have a goal that's related to exercise, I would recommend you to slowly build your way up, starting with a slightly elevated hearthrate, and stay in the state, getting used to it, feeling your anxiety subside over time. Then slowly, at your own pace, go higher and higher. This can be difficult on your own, so a good therapist that works with exposure therapy, could really be worth a try. Hope that helps :)
Adjusting the pressure in the ears: yawning will open the passageway that normalizes pressure. When I was in my 20s, I took a scuba diving course, and I don’t remember exactly what they taught us, but I was able to learn which muscle to move just by thinking about it and now I can pop my ears just by thinking about it.
I asked Dr. Mike about that on twitter too, hope he does a video on that someday. I used to have them, until I found out what it was and because I no longer feared them, they stopped coming. Unfortunately my daughter has it too now.
While you are sleeping, your brain released a chemical to paralyze your muscles so that you don’t act out your dreams in real life and injure yourself. Sleep paralysis occurs when your mind wakes up prior to your body and your muscles are still paralyzed, causing a lack in movement. The reason it feels like there’s a weight on your chest and you can’t breathe is because your chest muscles are paralyzed. People often hallucinate because you wake up mid REM sleep (very deep and vivid dreams) and your mind is still racing. This typically wears off within a few minutes and typical causes of sleep paralysis is high stress levels or not enough sleep, or both. I hope this answers your question.
There is no way to lose fat in your face without having to lose weight everywhere else at the same time. Eat healthy, drink lots of water, exercise, and get plenty of sleep. You will slim down all over.

I have an IUD and have tried multiple birth controls and nothing seems to make it better or worse. Multiple doctors have said this is my “normal” but I feel like something worse is going on. Could this be endometriosis? Or something I should continue to see a doctor for?
I used to be in the same situation as you (4 years of horrible periods) but then it randomly disappeared. Tylenol also works the best for me and birth control messed me up a lot
That might be Dysmenorrhea since I experienced it too when I was 11, and it was VERY Painful, when I had Dysmenorrhea I ate less food and didnt eat food most of the time since its my habit to eat all afternoon but since I had Dysmenorrhea I couldnt eat the whole afternoon and instead of 3-5 days it was somewhere to 1 week and 5 days or 1 week and 2 days... And Dysmenorrhea isnt as serious as Endometriosis... Edit: This only happened for 2 days for me, but if yours was....???? More than 2 days.... Yeaa... Talk to the doctor...
I had severe deja vue on the throat pain question. I had this for several months and went to my family doctor. He looked, couldn't find anything and referred me. I even had a scan and a blood test, but they couldn't find anything. Then after a year during a inspection at the dentist, my dentist expressed concern about the bad shape of my teeth. The enamel had completely withered away on some teeth and she asked if I drank a lot of soda or fruit juice, which I dont. After some talk and hearing about my sore throat (don't remember how that came up) she made the link and concluded it must be reflux. Now here it is Dr Mike's 2nd suggestion. Seems taking some time hearing out the patient really helps.

I think he has talked about it before when reviewing a few of the med tv shows

I struggle to wake up, but I have plenty of energy once I get going. I've never even tasted coffee before.

Cory Norell thx will try next time it happens
@Cory Norell @Wickara
It is usually an extra systole.

How harmful is blue light coming from gadgets?
I actually did a small research project on this and most of the evidence found focuses on using screens at night time and how it affects our natural circadian rhythm (our sleep cycle)
@@SianPressly Agreed. Typically harmless as far as the layman knows. Just don't let it fool your brain into thinking the sun is still up.

@@SianPressly can you share me your research?
It shouldn’t be harmful, but may mess with your sleep. In short, don’t lie in bed, in the dark, on your phone. (Unless the brightness is really low) It causes eye strain because your eyes dilate in the dark, letting in lots of the light.

Do you think high school students are chronically sleep-deprived? (taking into account when we go to sleep and when we have to be up for school)
im a highschooler and i know i am lol

To the girl who asked the question about sore throats every morning: @emmamorrow
In high school, i would wake up every day with a sore throat too!

Doctor Mike,
I know you're an advocate for exercise, but what would you recommend for people whose anxiety severely increases with a raised heartrate (regardless of cause)? Thanks, and I love the show.
KT L theanine, Holy Basil leaf, Ashwagandha, bioavailable magnesium, lemon balm, etc.
You can try going hiking, slow or short jogging or if you're looking for something more casual, long walks are amazing as well. :)
I don't think you need to start your exercise regime with hiits or 5 mile jogs
michael polites I like magnesium but I feel like it makes me almost to relaxed, almost slows down my heart rate too much? Anyone else have that issue?
KT a good way to start out could be to do some breathing exercises that helps cope with anxiety and panic attack. Just search google to find some and try them out :)
If you have a goal that's related to exercise, I would recommend you to slowly build your way up, starting with a slightly elevated hearthrate, and stay in the state, getting used to it, feeling your anxiety subside over time.

Could you explain sleep paralysis because I find it hard to explain to other people. You are the best ❤️❤️

Loki's Scepter I get them around 4 to 5 times a month
You can find it in Wikipedia
Just nothing I know what it is exactly...I have it and I just need a simple way to explain it
While you are sleeping, your brain released a chemical to paralyze your muscles so that you don’t act out your dreams in real life and injure yourself.

I have had super painful menstrual cycles for a long time, to the point where I am missing work, curled in a ball on the bathroom floor crying, or vomiting from pain. I have an IUD and have tried multiple birth controls and nothing seems to make it better or worse. Multiple doctors have said this is my “normal” but I feel like something worse is going on. Emma also try a humidifier. Your bedroom could be dry due to the seasons.
