You can also use the mask on your wood BEFORE you engrave and that will keep the scorching off of the wood. You can do your spray seal before removing the mask. Taking off the mask on this engraving would be time-consuming but worth the effort. Beautiful work.
Hi! Thanks for sharing. :) I have used paper transfer tape in the past before though. I found I had to go ALOT slower to make it through the mask and to get it as deep as I wanted in to the wood. There was a considerable amount of smoke, so I'm thankful for my DIY enclosure and exhaust fan. :)
That's brilliant! Have used acrylic and enamel paint on laser engraving but really like the water color effect. I'm no artist like yourself but hope you don't mind my trying my hand at it.
Hello. West coast Canuck here. I’ve just decided to start adding colour to my laser engravings. This is when I came across your video. Initially I thought of using water colours for a faint effect on the engravings like to add a dull red to a heart sort of thing. Have you used watercolours on any of your work? Alternatively I would try water downed acrylic paint.
Hellooo fellow Canuck! I have not tried water colour .. yet 😊 I’ve found the acrylic craft paint is pretty versatile and I even air brush with it for a fraction of the cost of airbrush paints . I’m not sure how the watercolour would react to any clear coats especially water based . Poly acrylic would probably make it smear as it does with the craft paint . Varathane water based Diamond clear dues a wonderful job . I’ve even used food colouring on some cutting boards ( as long as it’s inside an engraving or it bleeds) and used cutting board oil after without it reacting . If you try it, let me know how you make out . 😃
Thank you and yes I did. Hand drew it, then took a screen shot to then draw it out cleanly into line art on my I-pad in adobe fresco. When that was done, took a screen shot and brought it in to my sign master software and vectorized it. It may sound like quite a few steps, but drawing it digitally is way faster and cleaner than my old pen and ink method, then scanning it , vectorizing and then spending hours of cleanup where the pen bled or un even outlines. This artwork is available on my shopify SHOP app. Just search up Wan-Di Designs :)
That is what I’m using is inexpensive acrylic water based craft paint just from the dollar store. I have found it has a pretty good UV ( sunshine) resistance as well with a good clear coat ) I have stuff from 10 years ago sitting on my porch with no fading or sun bleaching in the colours. You can also get outdoor acrylic water based paints like the Ohuhu brand. They have some beautiful pigment rich colours and can be watered down as well. 😊
If you mean artist fixative, it might. I find it very costly compared to a can of 2x Tremclad clear. That would work to. :) I just try and avoid the stinky stuff .lol
I looked up live edge on Facebook marketplace and completely lucked out on some very affordable pieces! If you’re are from Ontario Canada, check out Cambridge wood supply. Amazing store and affordable prices as well. 😊
I drew this on my I pad with Adobe Fresco and my apple pen. I'll then save the screenshot, import it into my signmaster program to trace into vector and voila. Gone are the days that I hand draw with pen and ink , then scan it and clean up all the inconsistent outlines or bleed marks! I really like to create my own pieces. :)
you can always try a google search of Alice in wonderland colouring pages, vector art, or black and white clipart in order to create something amazing for your niece ;)

I wonder if fixative would work

Never tried painting one of my engravings. Where'd you find the artwork? My niece loves Alice.
