Great video, how have you got the app showing like that on the tablet, I have installed on a tablet and it only displays the screen size as a mobile phone. Thanks
I just got it today, my 06 scion tc has a rough idle and I was hoping to see which cylinders are misfiring. I would really like to see live misfire data but Im having a tough time figuring it out, when I click on misfire data its there but the button wont do anything, Im wondering if my phone doesnt have enough system memory.
Scan tools will only show you what the car will show the scan tool. Some with show misfire, some will not. I showed multiple vehicles to show they are all kinda different in what they show - I was nto very clear in pointing that out in the video. I have a different scan tool I'm using on my '61 Chevy that shows missfire detail, and I KNOW it's been misfiring, but nothing shows up on the (different) scan tool. It's not always the tools fault, but more the limitations from the manufacturer.
I saw another video of a guy using a totally different bidirectional scanner and he was able to run a test on each coil as he was trying to fix a misfire issue. I am wondering if this little scanner has a similar feature. Just ordered this to try
Sounds like it turns into a basic scanner at that point. I'm on the hunt for a full-fledged "pro" level scan tool that does everything, but needs no subscription. I suspect that sort of thing is on the way out - everything, it seems, needs a subscription nowadays.
@@GregWellwoodThe closest I've found with free lifetime updates is the Xtool A30M for $170 that I recently got but haven't had a chance to play around with much yet. I sent a message to Topdon about the Topscan and they said if the software is not renewed after the expiration date only the OBD function can be used.
@@GregWellwood I notice a lot of people want the free update's so you can buy a XTool A30M and get those updates free if you don't count the 4 to 5 time's higher price. To me its like paying 4 year's update's in advance. I do I have this wrong?
Yes. I got it for my 2014 Audi A5 for the rear brakes. Unfortunately, it seems to be incompatible for my Moto G and even my old Revvl 4 which both have Android 12. Google Play Store says "app isn't compatible with this device". So IDK what's up with that.
I'm playing with it, I'm showing you how I work my way through an app, I'm showing you how to learn. Any app should be relatively easy to figure out just by playing with it; if it isn't, I'm not interested in it. If you want a specific step-by-step process, this isn't the video for you. I teach my students to "get in there and figure it out" when it comes to apps and scan tools. The scanner cannot wreck anything, and every car will show different things - as I show you in these four vehicles; I'm playing with it to see what each car will give me. Even if I show you exactly what I do - your car will be different than the four different cars I show here. As for not being able to read the screen - are you watching this on a phone? Have a great day!
@@GregWellwood Interesting. I agree with the OP - too much of not much going on for most of the vid. Consider just leaving out everything that is not providing information of value. 😊😊
@@jonathanm9436 What would you prefer to see, in looking through an app and the options it provides? Scan Tools themselves are actually kind of boring.
@@GregWellwood Maybe a high level statement/diagram of the key features and their uses. Most people would be watching you to learn something new. Only you can make that call. All of the scan tools I have reviewed have their strengths. I try to test the product to show you what it can do, to help you make an informed decision. I would certainly recommend finding other reviews (not just mine) to help guide you.
Do you have to pay every year in order for this OBD reader to work ? If you dont pay does that still work ? Do you need to have internet to used it ? Thanks Greg, I keep checking, it looks like it has a lot more features than my old Maxi Diag and easy to work thru, using the tablet, instead of a smart phone. Read that easier for the old guy to see. Very nice!
I have an Android 11 phone and could not load the App, making the thing useless. Can't get a response from Topdon in a week so far. Trying to get a refund.
I believe it was initially the Lite version, but I had them activate the IMMO for me, which is part of the Pro version. I wasn't able to program the TPS, which is also part of the Pro version.

I didn't do that in the past, and it didn't brick when I diconnected the battery. Might have saved this time it if I had. Might not have. I will certainly be doing that from now on though...
Just got the Topscan, definitely the most capable Bluetooth dongle I've used to date. Thumbs up because I got a laugh out of PTSD Cruiser. 😂
Does the Topscan revert to OBD2 only, once the subscription ends, or is it fully usable, just without updates?
It reverts, confirmed in the Q&A section of Amazon and by emailing the company to ask that exact question.
Supposedly it will retain the bidirectional features, but no more updates as per some Amazon customers.
Great video, how have you got the app showing like that on the tablet, I have installed on a tablet and it only displays the screen size as a mobile phone. Thanks
I only installed it and it showed up that way. I don't have any magic here.
Just got one of these - one of the best Bluetooth dongles available -💯👍
