How about thinkcar 689bt
I like it so far. Here’s my take on it: This is the scanner we've been waiting for.

Love these videos for the Tundra, I have 2017 Tundra and your videos have saved me a fortune in dealer
fees. Thank you!
That’s awesome! I’m glad they’re helpful.
Doesn't seem worth it if you work on more than 2 different makes of care, when you can get a xtools anyscan a30m with everything except the coding features with no subscription, or just upgrade to the x7 and have all the features for $10 more a year
Very informational for the vehicles now a days, much appreciated
Glad it was helpful.
I own a Autel MX808 which I purchased in 2018 that as autel stated wasn't bidirectional but I could do injectors, abs, E-brake, DPF, and several other functions. In 2020 I believe they unlocked the MX 808 to become "bidirectional" and could do headlights, vin and sum other hot features.
Awesome
Great info man! You really do a fantastic job at editing in some great angles and shots!!
Thanks Chad, this was a little bit out of my comfort zone. I was trying to make it less boring but I was worried it was a little weird.
@@ToolDemosnot weird at all
Thanks for the video! Having the ability to program my own keys is something I hadn't considered up till now. I could have purchased an excellent DYI'er scan tool for the money I spent on a locksmith's emergency service for a replacement key.
It’s great to have a whole set of new abilities.
Can the Thinkdiag 2 read Mercedes models from 2006 and up? including directional like headlights, ABS ...etc, and module ECU programing like key fobs? Thank you.
Thanks for the information. BTW, you had to work to get that oil filter out. On my Mercedes Benz, it's right on the top, front of the engine, and comes off with one 32mm wrench.
Yeah, that’s one of my least favorite parts of the Tundra.
Awesome video Steve. I love the break down. Thank you for sharing. I really like the fact that you can buy a very capable scan tool for a very low price. You may have some things that you have to get used to like short cable etc. But having that option without spending $1000's.
You’re always appreciated, Tony. I agree, these capabilities on an affordable tool were unheard of 10 years ago.
Yeah its crazy. I tried making a a comparison chart of just differences between launch models, theyre vague just says has x number more of special functions, couldn't even sort that out and that's only one brand.
Crazy is right, there are way too many options. It makes it confusing.
The AP200 is the cheapest tool for programming keys at $60. I dont think it can program smart keys but it can do everything else. If anyone needs a key made, the AP200 is the best buy.
Unless it doesn't work on your car, which you won't know until you've bought and installed it all, as there is no demo.
I agree. As long as your car is before 2019/2020. Autel doesn't seem like they will support newer cars. Also it's great for 1 brand, adding more brands is more $$ annually. I got my AP200 for $39. Paid for itself after one EPB change.
Know what cars this works on?
@@TheDajoca wrong, you can contact Autel and check prior to buying it. Free tip, try not to comment on things that you know nothing about.
Two important features/capabilities place it on my Do NOt BUy list
1. No topology
2. Not FCA/Autoauth approved. This means if you own a 2018 or newer FCA vehicle, it will just be a code reader, no active test capable. You're screwed basically
💯I agree, no pro should be without those features.
What’s a good option for a beginner who wants the ability to work on all types of cars?
Protool master license incredible value. Caution if you don't know what you're doing, stay out of expert mode, and you might need to learn a little German.
You can't operate without Topology??? FCA/SWG needs to be a MAJOR lawsuit someday soon!!!!
Probably a long shot here but does it list any Ford Falcons (Australia) Great informative video too mate.
It lists Ford North America, Europe, and Australia. I couldn’t get the Australia list to work, but European Ford coverage does have Falcon up to 2014.
@@ToolDemos legend thanks
Can you recommend other scanners like the ThinkDiag 2 that does not require subscription for home use when ever needed? Not a mechanic...
I’m looking into getting some to test. For now, the most popular is Autel MK808
I like the Xtool A30M. I have the Thinkdiag 2 and the Topscan Pro as well. They all seem pretty comparable in function but the Xtool has lifetime updates. It costs about $175, which is more expensive than the other two, until you have to purchase an update in a year. If you do not buy the update the tool will not do anything. They won't even read codes.
Great video. Expla8ned a bunch of code readers types and the ramge of capabilities
Thanks! More to come…
I purchased a ThinkDiag 2. After a software update couldn’t get it to connect to either my iPhone or iPad. Contacted support only to learn that the system is now optimized for Android devices. So, my device is no basically a paperweight.
No! That sucks 🤬
@@ToolDemos yeap, so just purchased a KingBolen device.
Thanks for the informative video 👍
Glad it was helpful, I appreciate ya.
The key saving just sold me buy one of these just for making keys way cheaper.
As long as it saves the 350 key charge the 150 tow charge to the dealer and the 100 over charge as they bend you over, I'll take the key that turns the engine over! No other scan tool gives you that huge key saving$$$ right at the get go.
Yup. Great feature!
Hello! I just subscribed and love your channel! I would like to know if this scan tool you recommend can re-program a rear SAM unit on a 2010 Mercedes c300 4matic if you could verify yes or no for me prior to buying one of these please! Thanks again keep the videos coming!
Thanks Dave and welcome to the channel. The ThinkDiag cannot even read the SAM module on that vehicle. I also checked the Launch tool and it’s the same story.
Assuming there are no mechanical issues or fluid loss, what is the advantage of using the scan tool vs simply measuring what came out? Legitimate question, not a criticism.
Using a scanner for me is just easier. The drain pan that I have always has oil another fluids kind of sitting at the bottom. I don’t feel like cleaning it out so I can get a proper measurement.
Thx for doing this! Greatly needed and appreciated!❤
Glad it was helpful!
Seems great, super interested. Does this or any tool do a/c diagnostic? My wife’s 07 v4 Camry has an issue that I suspect is one of the pressure switches, one of which is located inside the dash and it would be great to be able to check this without having to take the whole dash apart.
Thanks!
I just checked on a 2006 Corolla. It did not have any pressure data.
@@ToolDemos thank you for looking, seems great so I ordered it anyway!
they thought jacking up your car for no reason while talking to the video was going to contribute some kind of authenticity to this whole thing
Hello I have a 2020toyota Tacoma v6 will this Launch x 431 elite will it show my transmission temperature? I would appreciate your answer back thank you.
The orange LAUNCH tool should allow you to add additional car brands through the Mall. I have a Benz specific one that I was able to add Honda/Acura software to. They do come at a cost to add and I believe they require yearly subscriptions for the add-on vehicle brands.
Yes, it does. Pretty cool idea.
It doesn’t program your key, to the car but it programs the car to accept the key , as a valid and accepted device to start etc. The key is not programmable.
As long as it saves the 350 key charge the 150 tow charge to the dealer and the 100 over charge as they bend you over, I'll take the key that turns the engine over! No other scan tool gives you that huge key saving$$$.
Great Video. Thanks! Ok, my 2015 Volvo XC-60 has an intermittent overheating problem. Sometimes the car runs great, sometimes, it overheats and I have to pull over and wait for it to cool down. Grrr! I have 4 scan tools. There are NO error codes. Every scan tool, tells me my engine is overheating. Great but I already know this. Will this Diag2 interface with a 2015 Volvo XC-60? I need a tool that will monitor the digital signal from the Engine Control Module/Unit. Thanks again!
The ThinkDiag will likely give you the same information as your other tools. One data PID that I would recommend monitoring is the water pump command signal. I would make sure that the PCM is commanding the water pump to run and if it is - go and check that it’s running. Also check the power and ground to the pump to make sure it’s getting those signals. I hope that helps.
Please send me the information about that scan tool thank you very very much very informative thank you for being there
Lots of info on their site: shrsl.com/4dmxp
problem is both bluetooth scanners asks for payment after 1 year which doesnt make sense
True
Did you actually test the key copy feature? Found a video claiming that feature doesn't work.
No, I didn’t.
I have a Lexus RX350 and a Chevrolet Silverado Duramax diesel. My Silverado has some issues and what scan tool would you recommend?
I really like the TopScan, but if you’re looking for a budget friendly tool without the subscription hassle, I have a review coming on Thursday (June 13) you might like.

Thank you, subscribed! Recognized your voice from Techs talking shop also.
I appreciate that. Good ear, I’ve done several TTS videos.
If you don't keep the subscription for the Topdon OBDII dongle, will it not work at all? I assume it would still work just not have any new cars.
It works as a code reader from what I hear. Mine is expired now, I should take a look.
Which tool would you recommend for recalibrating the airmatic suspension on a 2003 Mercedes-Benz E320 4 door Sedan?
The ThinkDiag 2 will do the airmatic recalibration.
Thank you for your help !!! I really appreciate it!! 🤙😎
For a Mercedes CLK 2007, which tool should I buy? Any conclusions on Innova 5610? Many thanks
This tool can read 9 modules and has the ability to bi-directionally test 7 on that CLK. Looks like a couple dozen special functions too. Haven’t tried the innova yet, but I might before the end of the year.
@@ToolDemos Thanks, much appreciated!
Thinking of buying this to chase down some SRS lights on my 2012 nissan armada, also need to program a remote for a 2012 dodge caravan. What limitations would the thinkdiag2 have for these vehicles?
It’ll do what you need with the Nissan SRS, but not the key fobs in your van.
@tooldemos
Love your videos, very informative.
Where can I buy the fill hose for transmission? ty
At WalMart. Made in USA, Hyper Tough brand. They put ‘em next to the oil.
What's with the jack? Upgrading the firmware?
I think I would call your "compromise" tools something else, like "cross-over" or "hybrid" since they seem to offer the better traits of the low price and advanced functionality. "Compromise" sounds like, well, compromise.
I like the ‘hybrid’ description, but maybe for an intermediate (between 2 and 3). I say that, because I’ve been testing one that you’ll get to see in the next video. June 10th.
Does the ThinkDiag2 scantool do Range Rover Sports? I've heard its very difficult, unless you pay about $400 or more for bespoke Range Rover diags, AND you have to lock your VIN to it?
Yup Range Rover Sport 2005-2022
This is a great video... I was really indecisive with what kind of scan tool to purchase. Appreciate the info Thank you!!!👍
I have a 2010 Honda Accord EXL V6, would the thinkdiag 2 work good with capabilities like live data info, active testing and everything else...etc?
Which scan tool is better in your opinion, Thinkdiag 2 or Xtool A30M?
Thanks
To answer your question about which I like better, the ThinkDiag or the Xtool - I have to tell you what I don’t like about the Xtool.
First: they have an interesting subscription idea where you can just buy the cars that you want, but nowhere on their website or on Amazon or on the App Store does it tell you what the subscription prices are. It’s always been my thought that when a company won’t tell you the price or it’s very hard to find, you’re usually not going to like it.
Second: check out the App Store and look at the ratings on the app. They are terrible. It seems like that tool is very buggy. It would be very frustrating to use.
Hope that helps.
I checked out the ratings n it wasnt really good, maybe a few were ok but overall negative feedback. Thank You!!!👍
hey what scanner is good for my 2022 ram limited 5.7 gas.
FCA (Dodge) products are some of the more difficult ones to work with. They require you to use authorization to get past a central gateway in your car’s network. To do that, you have to have a subscription to Autoauth that will provide you with a password. Then you need a scan tool that will work with Autoauth. There are many that claim they can do it, but I only currently trust Autel and Launch scanners for that.
Hi, I'm looking for a scantool that will reset the dfp eolys liquid levels after refill for a 2014 Citroen c4 1.6hdi. I've been recommended the topdon ArtiDiag pro but not sure about this facility.
Must be as cheap as possible but this reset facility is essential. Thanks
@@Michael.Huxley I found a Citroen C4 PICASSO (B78)- two diesel special functions:
1. Diesel particulate filter regeneration and reset.
2. Diesel additive maintenance.
Thank you , I hope someone replies who has actually used it to reset the fluid levels. Thanks again @@ToolDemos
You say in the video that this tool can program a new key, how do you get the PIN number for programming? I cannot find any info or videos that show a successful key program because the tool will not supply the PIN.
Something like that will require a specific key programming tool. This one is limited to cars with less security.
Wouldn't a J2534 pass through tool be the best bet cause you can scan, run test, and reflash ECU's and other modules?
You would be able to do more, yes. But, you gotta pay thousands to get that.
Will the tool you recommended work for programming 2014 SUBARU Brz push to start remote. I lost my key fob a month ago and had a locksmith come to my house and make one it cost me 1400$ now it worked for a few weeks now my cars not recognizing it. I have 2 Subarus and I am upgrading a lot in the brz and don't want to pay another locksmith for his year in upgraded software.
No, it doesn’t. But… if you are willing to take a risk, it does register keys in Toyota 86s.
Thank you!!!
At which price level can I get abs and steering graphing. So I can analyze which wheel sensor. Or electric steering function? 2011 Toyota venza.
The ThinkDiag2 will give you live data from both of those modules.
Here is my question on the think diag 2: I have a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a p0440 error code (evap leak), I am going to put a smoke machine in to the evap system to test it, but apparently I need to close the vent solenoid with a bi-directional scanner. Is this tool capable of doing that on a 2000 chevy Silverado 1500 LS 4X4 extended cab please?
I can’t see exactly which controls the scanner has for that car. If you want to close off the system though, an easy way to do it is to pinch the hose that is connected to the vent valve.
@@ToolDemos thankyou.
Will it work on a 2014 Dodge Ram and a Nissan Pathfinder 2013.
Yes it will.
If I have a 03 toyota matrix. I need to change the abs controller and reprogram it. You are saying there is no way to reprogram that module without the 5-10k oem tool?
Right. Assuming you do need to reprogram it, that must be done with a J2534 passthrough device and access to Toyota Techstream.
do you know what scan tools will do transmission relearns for a 2015 hyundai veloster?
The ThinkDiag shows ‘resetting auto T/A values’ - ‘AT adaptation mode’ - and ‘DCT learning function’
Can you explain how required the subscription is? Is the tool totally useless on old models even without it? So if you rarely use one you still have to pay subscription even if you don't use it? That's crap if so. I can see paying to update to newer models but paying just to use the tool you already bought is crap if that's what's required. If I use it twice in 5 years I just paid $650 to read my car twice if it's $100 a year. Can't believe so many companies scam people like that.
That’s right. It is time based, not usage based. Also, even older models get shut off when the subscription expires.
@@ToolDemos guess I'm not interested in one then. Most DIY that work on their own vehicle needs usage based. Ridiculous the scams they pull after you already paid a premium for the device because of the software
@@ToolDemos you think you could make a video comparing the best you've tried that have no recurring subscriptions required to continue using them? You'd think be a lot of diyers that work on their own car when it's down that would be interested. Thanks for the videos
@@jackle842000 thanks, and yes I’ve thought about it. I think I found a tool that fits that description. If I like it, you’ll see it before the end of the year.
@@ToolDemos that's good, needing to order one this week though. Would you mind telling me which one it is you're testing so I can add it to my options to consider? So far I've only found a Toyota specific launch but rather pay more and use on my other cars too. I got a bluedriver without looking into anything because all those raving reviews claiming it does so much. It didn't do much at all to me. I was hoping to be able to program an extra key and other functions but at a min read the transmission temp to be able to accurately change my fluid in the 2018 Camry. Bluedriver can't even read transmission temp on the car. They're offering to return it I think but I'm nervous. They contacted me based on my Google Play review and wondering how I'll know for sure I'm getting my $ back. I get nervous cause so many scammers these days.
I am a diyer but I want a bidirectional with topology mapping. Any ideas best bang for the back
Yes, you’ll see that next week on this channel.
Got a recommendation for a bi-directional scanner for a '97 XJ Cherokee Sport? It has the 4.0l inline 6 and AX15 manual trnasmission.
No, sorry. This one only goes back to 2014 on the Cherokee. Grand Cherokee back to the ‘90’s.

Will Thinkcar 689bt work on a C8 Corvette....
Yes, I looked and 2024 is the latest model year Vette covered. It can access 24 modules on that car and can bi-directionally control 12 of them.
Do you know if immobilizer function will work with 05 civic . I ended up installing d17a2 vtec motor and need to change ecu to take advantage of this and need to flash key to new ecu ? thanks for your time bud !

Good day to you. Does this code reader program replacement parts like cam shaft sensors to a vehicle that it is going on? I had replaced a faulty part on a Hyundai Sante Fe & still had an issue.
It can do some coding and recalibrations but no programming.
The "iLink 400 vivent" is $156 brand new and works great for doing crank shaft relearn procedure on the GM vehicles.

With the thinkdiag2 program the immobiliser/key for nissan pathfinder TI 2011?
No. It can’t do immobilizer programming for that car. The closest it can do is remote fob registering.
Will this code Mercedes headlight modules? Also will it do after collision engine start disable/non disable for bmw Mercedes? Will it read fuel pump?
I checked a 2018 E class. It has Xenon lights coding. For a 2018 BMW 5 series it has a function called ‘reset starter lock’ could be that? And also has fuel pump data and active tests.

subscribtion is one time payment only?
@@alexpetrut09 the first year is included when you purchase the scanner. After that, you have to purchase another one year subscription.
