Any scanner below a 5610 Innova. It's like a code reader only. You need to read and see every sensor that's working. Like for the automatic transmission. You need to see the speed sensors and you need to see if the solenoids are working correctly. And the transmission temperature
Got a check engine light a month after my car passed the emissions test. Then the sudden engine cut off while make a left turn. I panicked but luckily I was in the supermarket parking lot, when I it happened. Put the car in park, waited about a 1 or 2, car started right up. Before we go back to the dealer (car is 2012 Chevy), I wanna have some info before hand, not being a mechanic or a person.
Got an engine management light on my car about 8 months ago. Bought a very cheap scanner from a reputable High Street store, easy to use. P0171 code, lean fuel. Looked into it, common fault with my make of car is a faulty PEV. I took a chance and bought a replacement online, got a mechanic that i know to fit it, the light went off. £20 scanner, £20PEV and £10 to fit it, £50 in all. I know someone who was charged £70 just for the scan at a local garage.
And that's a very good point.. most of the time you won't need it by directional. If you can see that all the sensors are working or you can see that one sensor is not working. Like specifically the first O2 sensor upstream from the catalytic converter. Should have a clear signal that you need to know what it is to understand if it's good or bad. That would be a code p0420. Insufficient catalytic converter efficiency.
All of them do small limited specific amount of scanning of the engine operation. Only the real expensive scanners code readers will cause cover every aspect of every vehicle. A sensor may not work because it's dirty or it has a broken or loose bad electrical connection

Remember - anything 'free for life' is their life, not yours. They change their name, close down for a month and open back up with a new name...
Could still happen even if you pay for it
