What does a greenhouse cost? A DIY greenhouse can be as little as a few hundred dollars, while a kit starts at a few thousand dollars. But the kit is not the only cost associated with the greenhouse. My greenhouse kit ended up being less than half the total amount I spent. All this to grow some winter vegetables! I definitely still think it was worth it, but I wanted to share the true cost of a greenhouse if you want to have a winter garden and you don't want to go beyond cold frames or hoop houses.

Totally agree i bought my small green house, took me 4 weeks to assemble and bought around 300 extra screws to make it stronger plus built a new sliding door as the frame they supplied was too flimsy, i than built my own automated roof vents as it came with just 1, silicon all panels, raised beds, stone floor, fans ect. a small $600 green house has cost so far around $1300, great video mate Australia

Great Video! I watch this saying to myself "I'll be that's almost twice the cost now with supply and demand, and the rise in prices for everything under the sun including greenhouse supplies etc.
I did build 2 24x60x132 hoop houses last year (2021) and luckily bought most of my materials early in the year, and watched the price in some cases double for ALL the things I purchased to build them. I opted out of using any kits. It was a lot of work (about 7 months) but I saved a ton of money going this route.
Also, another option rather than auto-vents/windows would be a greenhouse exhaust fan with a thermostat switch.

I wish I had seen this video before I installed my Sungrow! I opted for growing in the ground and used the anchors that came with the kit. IfI could do it over I would opt for a base. The main complaint I have concerns the doors. The guys who put mine together are good builders, they have built houses, but they struggled with the instructions. The doors don’t look nearly as good as yours. We ended up having to buy tuck tape. Yes, automatic windows are a must.

  • @healingbygrowingfarms8578

I agree with you! We bought the 10x13 and it has taken a team of highly functioning farmers and engineers experienced with building high tunnels and greenhouse as part of their everyday lives; it took a very long time.
The instructions can certainly be better and they didn’t have anyone that would come to CT. The videos are helpful but stopping for each step is time consuming. As you said the screws are tiny and horrible to install.
It’s beautiful for sure but had I known how long it would take and it’s complexities I probably would’ve opt not to buy it specially for the high kit price. Thanks for sharing your experience and for your transparency! Blessings

I bought the same brand of greenhouse. Everything you said was true. It was a nightmare, particularly with the gasket which is poorly designed. The additional supports needed to be stressed into place. The peaks didn’t exactly align but the roof cap covered that up. The side panels needed to be trimmed to fit. You are totally right about the directions. At the end, it is a solid greenhouse. I did make a small work table out of the pallet

Just came across this video. I am currently putting together my greenhouse from a kit. (Looks like the same company). I am retired so have lots of time. As I was a mechanic my whole life I didn’t find it too difficult however I won’t be as polite as you and the say the instructions (or lack of) suck.
I took down a pergola which I hated and so I used the pressure treated 6x6’s off that as my base. I also had some pressure treated 2x12’s from a raised bed I took down and so transferred those into my greenhouse beds. So not counting my plants I would estimate it cost about $1000 extra. That would be for tax, delivery and extra soil I didn’t have. I managed to get it all done myself.
If you are not a diy and mechanically inclined person I would pay to have it installed.

I have purchased the same greenhouse as you, and have the end walls assembled in my garage......waiting for the next step. I wonder if you could explain (or show) how you fastened the greenhouse frame to the wood base if you have the time. Hey Frank, yes we're neighbors :) I know what you mean about attaching the frame to the wood base. I spent ages asking everyone I could for their recommendations since the instructions didn't include anything about this. I ended up using regular L brackets all around the base - so on the sides I screwed them into the metal hoops, and on the front and back I attached them to the metal pole at the bottom. Does that make sense? Time will tell whether this is a good long term solution, but so far so good. Glad you found the video helpful!

Though we check eggs daily, they can go for several days if we go out of town so long as it isn't going to freeze...don't want eggs to freeze because they crack and then the dogs get them. And besides the corner brackets you used did you secure the wood frame to ground in anyway? One last question (sorry) I was wondering if I need that tape you were talking about ? I haven’t seen anyone else mention that. Thanks AL

Hey Al, Very exciting about your new greenhouse! I dug down probably a foot or so for the crushed gravel, so not too deep. The base has stood up well, even in a few high winds its shifted maybe a cm or 2 over the past year I've owned it, but it's HEAVY, so at least where I live there was no need to secure it to the ground. But it really depends on where you live and how exposed the area is. And for the tape, Planta didn't include it, so they must not think its needed, but I'm glad I used it. Good luck with the build!

Great video! You are spot on with your cost. I purchased the Planta 10’x13’ Sigma greenhouse kit for $2,600. Electrical cost for conduit and labor $3,500. The inside is totally water proof with 6 receptacles incased as well as 3 water proof lights. Exhaust fan on one end with 2 intake shutters on the other end that automatically open when fan turns on. I have 2 small electric greenhouse heaters to keep greenhouse warm. Electricity was well worth the cost. Purchased a 40% shade cloth to fit over the greenhouse so the fan doesn’t run all day, even with both doors open. The reason I purchased this greenhouse is because it has 2 door that helps with ventilation, plus my garden is on one side and my small orchard is on the other side. Like your cost for framing, stone, brackets, screws, etc all are additional cost. My total was just over $8,000. And yes, you need and extra person to help with the build. Lucky for me, my retired next door neighbor who is an engineer volunteered willingly to be my project manager. If you don’t have electricity, you can’t control the cold or the hot weather. To do that their is a cost.

Thank God I don't live in Canada! Those prices are mental. I think you also went overkill on some things and made extra work for yourself too.
My tunnel that I'm constructing admittedly isn't as big as yours. It is 4mx3m and cost €680 including delivery & taxes. It would have cost an extra €300 for the supplier to assemble.
The kit is supplied with sub-ground anchors which, if used are cemented into the ground. (I'm using them but burying them in the loose stone base I've created with blocks holding them in place.)
The construction looks similar to yours (obviously shorter) but took me on my own a day & a half to assemble the frame. I'll get help to put the poly on from a mate.
I don't know why you didn't build it in situ, ie. on the base? And finally those beds!!?? I know you admitted they were unnecessarily large, but lord!!! Oh, and incidentally I've ordered some automatic openers that fit on to the door windows. They can be unclipped to allow the door & window to fully open. €40 each. and I thought Ireland was expensive... 😉

First if you paid that for a 10x20 you got ripped off. You can get a kit and plastic for around 1250.00 US dollars.

True - I've seen greenhouses for 1/10th of this price... I've even bought one of them. I chose a higher quality, more expensive greenhouse because I wanted a guarantee against high winds and snow, two issues that I face in my area.

is that Canadian prices you quoted for this same unit Bob. Where might I find one for that price?

BoB is incorrect. While you can buy a 10 x 20 for $1,250 it will NOT even be close to the quality of the greenhouse in the video which has polycarbonate skin rather than just plastic. Nor will the frame be as strong and wind resistant than the one in the video.

well maybe-you were sent all the right parts!! we were not and we still don’t have everything! Good fro you! Buying this green house has been a night mare and saying you like yours don’t mean anything to us, it sucks and I hope nobody buys one!!,

"the first cost of buying a greenhouse is the greenhouse" 🤦🏻‍♀️

If you have someone do the work then yeah, I poured a concrete base level and square and erected it with friends. The Planta 10 x 13 is the perfect size for backyards. Yours looks nice but cedar? You should have used pressure treated for cost saving. What $1800? Yeah its all about DIY.

Planta greenhouses are rippoffs. Extremely complicated to build and took me an entire year to build it. Pain in the ass.
