I have only heard about leaking issues from the B48 and B58 Engines. But for others here is a list also with part prices in USA
    1. Plastic coolant tank pipe can leak (30 USD) -> Is known to crack and leak even before 60k miles check that one out
    2. Plastic Oil filter housing on the side can leak (issue with cracking plastic) (300 USD)
    3. The Water Pump can leak coolant and fail (tbh almost any German vehicle has problems with failing water pumps at some point of time) (176 USD)
    4. The plastic coolant flange on the side of the engine can eventually leak coolant too (2 Reasons either it cracked or the O ring gone bad) (19 USD)
    5. If you realize none is leaking and you have disappearing coolant level then check the cap of the coolant tank, that one can be faulty and leak air. (22 USD)
    6. Of course Valve Cover Gasket. But this of course will fail according to how much heat you give it via driving hard. Still this is a wear item and it will eventually fail. (55 USD)
So if you have 600-800 USD on hand with tools and you trust yourself in repairs, an used 330i or any 30i Engined BMW since 2015 can be a good purchase if the price is good and all the conditions above are already repaired or met upon.
I can say though, a friend of mine drives his 530i xDrive very hard with 0W30 Oil every 6-7k miles and it still didn't have any issues with the aforementioned issues.

At last count my 2011 135i, price $47K, has $60,000 in repairs. That includes the old sheared VANOS bolts migrating to the oil pan requiring a 2 week engine rebuild, the starter started electrical fire burning out every single electrical component in the car, and the typical $2K, oh, every other month or so. It needs a new top, as the shit fabric has disintegrated with dozens of slits, the AC has given up the ghost, the rear main seal is gushing oil, the oil pan gasket is leaking from at least 5 places, requiring disassembly of the tacked-on X straps and dropping the front subframe, and the 6MT pops out of 3rd. The pleather seats are both ripped and thr entire dash is delaminating. I could sink another $30-40K in repairs into it, but its only worth $2K on a great day, so no. Shittiest car on earth, worst ever, absolute turd engineering.

Not exactly true, my brand new 430i has weird issues like random loud banging when braking in the reverse gear or engine being randomly loud for a long few seconds after a start. Contrary to the test drive car, the gearbox doesn't shift quickly, while sometimes even doesn't lock the hydraulic clutch, the issue is with decision time, I press the throttle and it takes a second or two to reduce a gear even in sport mode. It has just wound 2000km on the odometer and I have not revved it over 3k RPM, I have actually treated it with the ultimate care. Not to mention 2020 models lacking rear floor mats. That's a bummer.

I disagree. BMW, much like other manufacturers started quoting ridiculous lengthy service intervals (20,000 miles) only as selling points. Sadly, these lengthy service intervals were and are arguably the cause for many of these catastrophic engine failures such as chains snapping etc. So, I do agree with your point regarding maintenance, but it is BMW's fault for falsely guiding people on maintenance, which they did to increase sales. The second reason behind many of these engine failures is poor quality and engineering. This of course does NOT apply to all engines BMW has or is making, but there are a handful of engines BMW made that are simply poor.

I agree my mechanic told me the same thing. The owners lease them and have them washed and detailed so the outside looks pretty, but when it comes to maintenance he says they want to put in oil that's not recommended for the car and they want to use cheap parts for maintenance. He said once the lease is up and they trade it back in it's a ticking time bomb for the next owner who buys it unfortunately. He told me if you get a BMW either get a newer model and also make sure you get an extended warranty to cover all the expensive and necessary repairs you will eventually have to deal with at some point.

The B46/B48 is more than just more reliably than the N20, its smoother, more refined, and generally just better. Its closed deck, the lifter and injector noise is all but gone, and the new balance shaft has made it almost as refined as the B58. Thats on top of fixing the oiling and timing issues of the N20. I've still not seen any real reason the B48 won't be a very solid engine in the long run. The counterbalance shaft recall ended up affecting a handful of G-series cars, and that was that. None of the early F-series B46 and B48 engines got recalled.

    • @ECPP

This is a known issue for the b48 and b58 engines but generally coolant consumption comes in one of 2 ways. It either drinks it or leaks it and finding the source of this can be very difficult. Many people see this to some degree in these engines but there is an answer and it should not consume more or less based on level of spirited driving.

I prefer the 2000s decade when it comes to BMWs. The N52 naturally aspirated 3 liter straight six is bulletproof but, skimp on oil changes you will be sorry. N52s still have plastic valve covers and intake manifolds but, have metal oil pans and all metal oil cooler. There is nothing wrong with plastic oil pans if it’s designed properly though. Some parts such as the oil cooler are not meant to be made out of plastic unless it’s PEEK which is cost prohibitive or be used in an EV drivetrain or for the transmission fluid instead of the oil in an engine.

You know that the B48 is a modular engine right? So the B38 3 cylinder and B58 6 cylinder would all have the same issues. Everyone across the world with actual mechanical knowledge has said these generation of engines are vastly improved and the issues of the N motors banished.

The 3 cylinder and 6 cylinder will have different balance shaft arrangements due to different vibration characteristics, in fact the 6 cylinder probably doesn't have one at all.

Yes it refers to the production method and the fact they share the same bore and stroke, as well as a few design characteristics. What did you think it meant?

Well not everyone would have an issue, the internet tends to distort the truth. But the 3 cylinder, 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder versions are still massively different in many ways. They just have to be. For example the 4 cylinder has a balance shaft, the 6 cylinder doesn't. The 3 cylinder has an eccentric flywheel to counter the front to rear rocking motion which is a charicteristic of that type of engine. The 4 cylinder isn't just a sawn off 6 cylinder..

Its small problems like these that give bmw a bad name. Just like any other engine out there have its problems. The only difference is that Mark always hightlights the faults of BMW engines. Mark you should send BMW a list of problems experience so they can fix it. Can you make a video of the problems they fixed in the 2.0lt N46 and well as the 2 different versions of the B58. Earlier versions as well how it compares to TU version

Im pretty sure it's big problems like your engine blowing up from rod bearing failure is what gives BMW a bad name.
not to mention no oil dipstick.
I actually had the electronic oil level meter fail and the car would keep reading empty even though it was just filled.

I have the N46B20 engine and I want to upgrade, I am looking at the B48 right now, even the B38. The N46B20 is a decent engine, it's not a smooth engine, sounds like a diesel and if you don't put new original dampeners it vibrates a lot.

For about 5 months I had a 2017 911 S4. In that time, with less than 30K miles, it went through a water pump, left side muffler assembly, clutch pedal assembly, fuel tank sensor, all of which would have cost over $9K if it wasn't for the warranty.
      However, it drove!

It is a legit issue, but it didn’t affect more than 200-300 cars built in 2018 and 2019. And they were all recalled and fixed. So this is not a common problem at all.
