Imagine living in a world ruled by a supertech alien force, that can trow off any tech created by the human race. Imagine living in a world where the air is unbreathable, where you are 24 hours being watched, where everything is either old and rusty, combine oppressive tech, wasteland, where a bunch alien zombies live, or where children can work in factories. There’s almost nothing to be attached to, the only thing certain is that you either die, or live long enough to see yourself become a stalker.
With bug fixes and some prematurely made assets its basically a game. It was just very buggy when the leak came due to a lack of textures and assets, but due to screenshots we was able to get some sort of textures back
The retail story is obviously much better and I'm glad they changed it, but there's just something so intriguing about this beta, I wish they made this into like a not canon spin off game or something.
Well, I for one think that one of the best parts of beta was the citadel. It looked so much bigger and more alien! I don't really like the new steel plate look. It also has some kind of blue goo leaking out which just makes the retail citadel look weird in my opinion.
Well, they didn't change the story because it was better (it was written by the same crew). They change it because it was too ambitious and too big of a scope. Beta 2002 (Depicted here) and retail are two different products, they did what they could deliver.
You folks just do it like I do, I always considered the beta city 17 to be city 14 in the Canon lore meaning most of the elements we see here work and exist in that locale somewhere on earth, obviously it's not a high priority citadel but it is a combine controlled city nonetheless.
The more I watch these kinda vids, the more I feel that the HL2 Beta should've been the real game. Part of me thinks we only want it 'cause we didn't get it ourselves. Maybe Valve saw something wrong with the concept and it had to be cut all together. One of those "It sounded good on paper" things. Half life 2 is already an amazing game, but could've it been better with this style? If only we knew.

I've been thinking about this as well, but in the end I'm glad Valve decided to change it to what we got. The retail version feels waaaaay more grounded in every way, and I believe that helps making the game timeless. Having said that, as of late I've been fascinated and enamored with this darker City 17. Helping those feelings are probably the fact that this version of the city never came to be, and it feels like peeking into an alternate half-reality. If a HL2 re-imagination with this aesthetic was ever released I would be so down for that!!

If the beta was the finished product and the concepts ended up being a part of it as well, Half Life 2 would've inspired more fps games with more darker perhaps mysterious narratives.
I'm glad that they chose the eastern european cityscape. It fits perfectly with what the game tries to convey. I also like what they did to Dr. Breen. Everything in Half-Life 2 (the way that it is now) is befitting for the scenario.
I suppose at the time, though, it was more original to get away from the Deus Ex, Blade Runner, etc type of dystopian vibe. In the retail version, it's more subtle and subdued; and also blended well within the backdrop of a former combloc nation. The beta and retail took fairly different approaches to almost every aspect of the game, though, so I can't really point and say which one is better when the story itself was revamped later on in development.

Also canonically wise most of the citizens in the game are meant to be different people from different parts of the world; they speak english with an american accent because it was allot easier for the devs to code in.
I do enjoy this very dystopian gloomy look with citizens being required to wear masks to conserve oxygen gives it some very brutal creepy vibes Though idk if that would have better in the end, what we got is a lot more disturbing imo since it's not as blatantly oppressive. Making your brain adjust to the gloom. feels like they're stripping down humanity not cracking down on it hard HL2 is is like sci-fi prison, what we got is more hyper extreme version of the warsaw ghetto
yeah, hl2 retail is more unsettling in the way that it makes you feel like you could live in that world, which is terrifying to think about, just slowly switching into the Combine's worldview and not seeing anything wrong with it.
hl2 beta looks like the hl2 game we get but the combine stayed longer so the world is more dark and polluted and more combine technologies, kinda cool tho

I remember having a streak of dreams at that all took place in a dystopian 1984 type world like this, where me and my friends had to save the word from the government. Very similar to half life 2 beta, I even wrote a comic about it.
If you have half life 2 episode 2, you can play raising the bar: redux. It’s basically a mod that recreates what retail half life could have looked like if they went along with the beta. Division 2 was released a while back, and it recreated the game up until the escape from the ravenholm mines. Give it a play if you haven’t yet.
The true citizen recognizes that the Beta was cut for a reason and Half-Life 2's storyline being like this would not have made it the great game it is today.

Damn, I get why they chose not to go with the whole "poisoned earth" aesthetic, as it's much harder to develop levels that take place outside with people in it (theyd have to get new filters somewhere), not to mention writing the story was probably more difficult when having to constantly ask how X scenario would work if the air was poisonous (for example, if Gordon was just dropped off at the train station, he'd be immediately poisoned as he wouldnt have a mask etc). Not to mention it probably helps to distinct the rebellion away from the combine if only the combine are wearing expressionless masks But goddamn, does it look way cooler and really emphasize the post-apocalyptic aspect of the post-apocalyptic dystopia that is Halflife 2.
I swear to god the beta would have been better than what they changed it for. HL2 Beta was going to be dark and 1984 like with a Future Retro style. Then Valve changed it to a Physics Scientist sort of style. Especially the Consul would have been a lot better than Dr. Breen.
it wouldnt, small aspects like characters or some enemies, yes. Valve deleted masks beacuse they wanted to focus on facial animation and later they deleted that whole dark concept beacuse there were too many problems with the story

While I'm happy we did get Eastern Europe in the final game as City-17, I would have loved to visit something more like this in terms of dark tone (I generally prefer darker games and having it try to out-dark HL1 which already had some pretty dark scenes would have been the natural evolution) maybe as a side-game featuring another protagonist such as maybe Adrian Shephard, also I do generally prefer this setting even if I'm happy Europe was picked.

They explained it was just far too much walking and scenery, not enough story or action. It was dark for the sake of being dark, there was no charm or meaning behind it like Retail HL2. Lots of them felt the plot was weak and didn't have any depth, stuff like the Arcade was dumb and the gameplay was just too "meh" and scripted. It looked nice on paper and in-game as seen here, but was boring and not really that good when you actually play it is what the issue was, and that's why it was all cut and rewritten. Just a *really* bad paper to play transition that needed to be back to the drawing board. And you can feel that if you play the leak or accurate restorations, lots of fan mods or restorations make it like Retail or their own thing. It's just missing something.

I think Half-Life 2 should have kept some of the darkest bits of the beta while keeping the more realistic down-to-earth general feel.
