Welcome back to Little Mountain Ranch! Today, we're diving into the aromatic world of homemade spice blends and the therapeutic art of soap making. Join me, Chelsea, as we explore the secrets behind crafting your own chai, pumpkin, all-purpose, and apple pie spice blends from scratch. Whether you're a seasoned chef or just beginning your culinary journey, these spice blends will bring warmth and depth to your dishes.
We're also going to make another batch of lovely bar soap. It takes a few months, from start to finish to make soap, so we're getting ahead of future needs by getting more made now.
And, of course, it wouldn't be a day at the ranch without a visit to the barnyard.. We're on "lamb watch," eagerly checking to see if our ewes have welcomed any new babies into the world. Will we have new additions to the Little Mountain Ranch family? You'll have to watch to find out!
    Thanks for watching!

Hey Chelsea - if you add some turmeric AND a bit of ground black pepper to your chai spice, it's spicier AND it helps your joints feel better. Turmeric is the magic but there's something funny in black pepper that activates the turmeric. Indians are wise folk. Also it's SAY-lon cinnamon. I love that stuff!

Hello from Texas. I just ordered your cookbook as a treat to cheer myself up a bit. I struggle at this time of the year, February 2 was my son’s third birthday in heaven.
I enjoy your videos so much. I grew up in a family of 11 children. We grew huge gardens and raised animals to feed our large family. My mother was a talented cook and master at canning and preserving. You remind me of her. ❤

Hi Chelsea. I have successfully overwintered rosemary for several years but have learned that it needs lots of supplemental light and counter-intuitively, lots of moisture, even misting. Even though it is a "hot, dry" zone crop, it doesn't do that well in our artificially heated homes in winter. I do prune it back quite heavily when I bring it in and dry/grind the dried leaves. I keep it near all my other indoor gardening so that I don't forget to water it. The advantage for me is a bigger plant overall but that may not be an advantage if you have limited space for winter growing of a large plant. On another topic, you are so good at talking to the camera as if it is a real, live person! Good job!

Did you say that you took an inventory before the pantry challenge? Do you keep track of what you use when you use it or are you going to make another count at the end? Are you going to allow yourselves to "cheat" once and a while and go to the grocery store for something you really want/need? What about illness like colds or fever? It seems like it would be so tempting if you had to run to Walmart for a birthday present and not grab a few things while your there. This is a great idea, I'm going to do the same after fall canning.

Rosemary in my south facing windows always survives the winter. It needs regular watering in our rather dry living room air. My rosemary is in bloom right now. Third winter for two plants . Both plants go out in late April.. Eastern Ontario here. Envy for your arkansrum. I'm a sour dough baker. I appreciate this machine. I do fold and stretch by hand. I also make soaps, creams and salves.

HI, I"m enjoying your channel very much, and learning a lot about canning. I see that you've been making soap and wondered if you had ever heard of the hot process method? The soap cooks for about an hour, and is ready to use immediately, although it benefits from waiting a couple of weeks. It has a rustic look, and works best as a large bar, cut into slices (It sets up quickly, so does not do as well in molds). You can make several batches, pretty quickly, and get it all cut up and stored away in a much shorter amount of time. It's easy to get a year's worth a soap stocked up using this method.

Hi Chelsea, I make homemade soap also. One tip that helps me in the kitchen is to set the soap bar on top of one of those Scrub daddy's & set that into a small bowl. I wish I could send u a picture of the set up. The scrub daddy keeps the soap out of the water and the bowl catches any liquids. I use the sponge in & around my sink & it always has a smidgen of soap on it that is used. ❤❤❤ Adore your channel 🤗

Have you ever put a dollar amount (what it costs you) on your garden for your 1 year pantry? Seeds, starts, water, electricity, compost (if you ever buy that) and anything else you have to purchase to have a successful garden? I wouldn't include your time because that's priceless! But I'm just curious what that 1 yr of garden pantry costs you. I know it's pennies compared to if you had to purchase all the produce.

I bring my rosemary in to my unheated mudroom. It gets some light but not full and I only water when it starts to feel dry. The room does get pretty cold. That works best for me. I used to keep them in the house and they would just dry up and die from the dry forced hot air system

Hey just fyi. I make homemade mayo but I use 1 cup avocado oil, 1 egg, 1 T lemon juice and some mustard usually fresh. I put everything together in my jar that fits my immersion blender. Place the blender at the bottom and press start. DO NOT I repeat DO NOT lol lift the blender up until you see the ingredients change to mayo. Do it for a little bit more than slowly lift blender a bit to mid the rest. No more pouring oil slowly or wasting egg white. Of course totally up to you. I make a chia tea liquid concentrate that is really good. I use 18 decaf black tea bags- Tetley is good, 12 cups of water and add whole spices in a square of cheesecloth- depending on what you like- I use 2-3 cinnamon sticks, 5 star anise, a teaspoon each of whole cloves, grated nutmeg, fennel seeds, allspice, peppercorns, and cardamon. Place the tea bags and spice bundle in the water and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove the tea bags and simmer another 20 minutes. Makes about 3 quarts. I grab my favorite mug and fill half way with tea concentrate and half with milk. Heat back up and add honey to taste. Delicious!

"right in the thick of winter" is when you are supposed to be eating through your food stores. You store up during the growing season to eat during the winter.

Question: what is the purpose/benefit of canned vs. stored potatoes? I have been curious about that for awhile now…. Love your channel and have learned so much from you and your family!

My rosemary survives heavy frosts, but you could maybe plant it where it's a bit sheltered and put a white cover over it to keep the snow off? The white colour gives it some light, might work. Maybe plant an extra one and experiment with cover?

Or maybe put it in the greenhouse buried in the ground? I put mine in my greenhouse and it’s doing great., zone 7.

I have avoided adding salt to beans while pressure cooking them because I thought that would prevent them from getting soft enough. Have you always added salt when cooking?

Instead of putting the cupboard doors back, maybe Dan could make a small sliding barn yard type door, repurposing wood from somewhere?❤

What is the temperature of your pantry? I have never canned anything. Why can’t you use used lids to can?

I used to kill my rosemary plants every year. For the last 2 years I have put a frost bag over the rosemary plant and it has survived the winter and is huge. Hope this helps:)

Can I suggest putting your lye in something with a lid as you wait for it to cool. With how many kids and animals you have running around I worry one might spill it, eat it or something. Royalty Soaps here on RUclips has a video on the basics of soap making and safety if interested.
