Part 52: Again With The Intercooler?! - Part 1 - My 76 Mazda RX-5 Cosmo Restoration

- In any long running project, and no one will debate that this is a long running project, there are always things that one looks back on and reconsiders. And for years, there has been a big one in the engine bay: the intercooler. I was never happy with the angular placement and the almost improvised look of the plumbing. It seemed as though it was an after market kit made to fit a space. It was at odds with the engine bay. It ate at me. And after the instrument cluster I wanted to cut and weld! So I made the decision to seemingly go backwards and redo work already done. It was absolutely the correct decision.
Авто/Мото
I have followed this project for 25 years give or take, looking forward to the result
I mean 1st cosmo video was 14yrs ago but the series started 11yrs ago lol

Of the hundreds of RUclipsrs I follow, I’m always looking out for your uploads! Keep up the great work!!
Agreed, he is the og. No fast forward video nor voice overs
I have always want to present the work as it really happens.
I have the same felings
aaroncake.... buddy, you gotta know your beloved by many. I liked the video before it even started. You do fantastic work, keep the mood light, most of all, you show you are truly passionate about this project. That makes it a great watch for us.
Thank you! And don't worry, the project won't stop until it is done.
@@aaroncake a project is never done, always something else to tweak, redo, adjust. But that fine, having that passion is inpiring. Keep it up......that's what she said...
Nah, she's never had to say that to me. ;-)
It wasn't an April Fools Joke. It was an April 1st miracle! I'm so glad you're still alive and kicking Aaron.
Aaron doesn't do April fools jokes. But I did like the fact that it was April 1st, and I posted a video showing work I'd already done.
Yeah ! I remeber starting to watch this build before the donor car used for project Binky was manufactured.
👍
been watching this build for 14 years now...... and I still watch all of your stuff!
I found you when you did the LED tail light build. It feels like that was ages ago. And it almost was... Always love to see a new episode.
It kind of was. And that project was chosen specifically because I knew I was moving and wanted the transition to be easy. Didn't need much to complete it except a bench.
I was mid 20s when you started I’m turning 40 soon 😂 but I’ll always be here watching. Please dude put some safety glasses on, you’ve been lucky for a long time but it only takes the once to loose an eye.
Where did I miss the glasses? I always try to wear them if there is a chance of something flying. Especially after getting metal in my eye a few years ago (even though I was wearing glasses).
Aaron Cake is back 💪🏽
🤘🤘 Think I'll rewatch the original intercooler video before I watch this one
Yes, good choice. The work I originally did on it has always bothered me.
Lol I did that too 😂
i have years of my life invested in this project lol
Well, so do I. :-)
@@aaroncake yes of course lol even more than me, if i ever come to canada, and have some spare time, ill stop by and assist if you like, i believe my ocd will assist in quality work
Oh joy .... the Cake is back.
The cake is not a lie.
"zed" here in New Zealand 😎 nice work Aaron, keep it up 💪🏻
Also here in NZ been following this build for ever.
Absolutely love it. Keep up the work man
One of the few realistic builds. Thanks Aaron
It's true. Realistic in budget, time and the fact I show the work an don't drone on for 10 minutes to then show 20 seconds of build. Thank you!
The RUclips gods smiled upon me and said “ Ye hath been patient, here is your next Aaron Cake video you have been waiting for.” RUclips god is good to it’s people!
man i remember watching your videos. and then it just kinda ended for awhile. glad to see something new. holy shit. just brilliant.
It slowed down, but will not end until the project is complete.
Blame it on Binky, but that intercooler bracket mount by the AC bracket is asking for some captive nuts on the bottom side!
Not a bad idea at all. I'll put some thought into how I can accomplish that.
the saga continues!
Nice to see your videos. Thumbs up from Lithuania!
Just wish your videos were more regular....there always interesting and fun and educational
So do I, so do I.

As I was getting ready to comment and tell you how this is my longest and most loved build on RUclips. Started watching your channel about 10 years ago I see how many other long time followers you have. Keep up the great work Aaron! I have rewatched almost every video quite a few times now lol.
P.S I see you still haven’t been able to find aluminum magnets at your welding supply store. What a shame.
Whenever I ask, they send the co-op student out to the back to look, and they always say "Out of stock".
YESSSSSSSSSSS HE'S BACK!!!!!!!!!!
Holy crap! Today is a great day! Thanks Aaron!
Time to pour a beer and enjoy this
Strong stout I hope.
@@aaroncake this is creepy man... do you have cameras in my living room? hahaha Yes, a 12 % ABV Cherry and Vanilla stout I brewed 6 months ago!
Was with you until the cherry. ;-) Big fan of vanilla stouts and awesome you brewed it yourself. Will be having a bottle of Kentucky Bastard imperial coffee stout (Niklebrook brewery) this evening.
@@aaroncake cherries are not on everyone's taste. To be fair, these are dark cherries, which work better in stouts than the regular ones. Yours sounds delicious! Enjoy! And btw, great work with the car!
So cool to watch so much fabrication.
Next one is even better, in my opinion.
I've gone through so many project cars since I started watching this Cosmo build, wish I had the attention span to stick with one! I might have to go back to the first episode to recap
I guess that depends on what the project is. The Cosmo is open ended with some definite goals I have in mind. But other parts of the project just happened (for example, the electronic instrument cluster).
My favorite you tube channel,i been follow this project since 2015 and im stil looking always for the next video, keep doing your grate job, mabe i open a you tube channel one of this days when i start restore my Rx3
Let me know if you do because I'll certainly follow along.
I was waiting for this video for so long!😲
iv missed these so much, just joined patreon in hopes for more whenever you find the time, cheer brother
Thank you! There are a few small Patreon extras but mostly it is just more constant updates...however I admit that lately I haven't kept up. I'm trying to be be better about that.

Aaron thinking of you this christmas i so want you to keep going its a long hawl but just love the content and your Humour cherrs dave
Thank you! A little secret is that I was trying very hard to get another video out before Christmas but alas, stuff has taken me away from editing. So very soon in the new year.
Excellent work! I love some bracket building!
The world runs on brackets. And alcohol.
much better positioning for the intercooler, its coming together
Much, much, much better. Completely changes the entire engine bay and gives it the properly thought out look.
Coming along now...🏁
This is a litrle bit strange. Just yesterday I was thinking that Aaron don't sent videos a couple months. Nice to watch you. Can I suggest? Make more vídeos. We miss really good stuff.
Yay a new episode! I think those IC brackets are beefier than my engine mounts 😅
The infinite sadness when it was over
For the first half of the video i thought you might have finally grown up, i was really relieved when when i heard the first "Name of your sextape" :D
Glad your back, see you in a few months. Please never change!
I may get older but I will never grow up!
This might be the only video though that does not included "That's what she said".
*you're, Idiot
@@aaroncake yep i noticed that also, a bit disappointing :-) love your work.
I almost put that in the description.
Hi Aaron, hope you're doing well. With kind regards from The Netherlands!
Holy shit! April no fools!
I'd never do that.
It's great to see you're still plugging away at this project. Thanks for the update!
I won't stop plugging until it's done!
@@aaroncake giggity
liked, commented for the algorithm.
I'm not a big fan of that algorithm. It doesn't promote me because I have the audacity to have other things going on in my life so I can't upload a new video every 3 hours.
Finally no electrics, finally you've made a new video. Please a quick video of it started up, come on
Yeah, I'm sure everyone, including me, is happy about that. The instrument cluster was an absolute grind, though I'm sure worth it in the end. Very nice to be back cutting, grinding and welding.
Canada's own Nik Blackhurst well done sir.
I don't know, maybe reverse that because I started first.
Gotta love doing something you've already done, but it has been a while since you fiddled with it.
It was a difficult decision to seemingly move back when there is still s much to do, however it was the right decision. I could simply not continue with the intercooler the way it was. It was completely out of character with the rest of the build.
hey aron nice to see you again
intercooling setup looks nice , and its mounted in a way that it movs as one unit with the turbo and intake , you could basicly put v band clamps on the pipes and do away with the silicone hoses and end up with an even nicer looking setup
Great minds must think alike. Wait for the next episode.
IT HAPPEND! WHAT IS THIS MAGIC!
And just to be clear, are those brackets gonna hold the weight of the water to air IC filled with lead with another human hanging on to it?
because they look like they can be the towing point of the car with how overbuilt they are xD
Remember, it's not just the weight of the intercooler, but of the water as well. And cantilevered out from the engine. Since the intercooler must move with the engine there were limited bracket locations. 20 years from now as I drive over some bumpy railroad tracks I'll never worry about the intercooler brackets.
生きとったんかワレっ!待っとったぞ♪
Yes...... ZED.
Today I was doing a YT cleanup of my playlists and I stumbled on part 12 that I saved 10 years ago. Back then the notification bell didn't exist but I did subscribed to your channel. Glad I took a look back and that you still work in it. I'll enjoy seeing your content in the notifications now! :)
Back then it was great, because a new video meant all my subscribers got an email and there were 5K views in the first hour. Now of course no one knows until they log into RUclips or the app notifies them (if it ever does). Anyway, glad you are still onboard and the next one finishes off the intercooler (again) to show the re-do was absolutely worth it.
@@aaroncake Still have a looooooooooottt of catch up to do hahahahaha. But yeah...notifications really sucks now. I have a few ones that just dont show up and I find them in the recommended section instead. I miss the good ol' days.
One of the first vids i watched of yours was you originally doing up that cooler! Good to see the progress👍
Excellent! And it has come full circle. The next video finishes it off and the redundant work was totally worth it.
@@aaroncake awsome to hear! Keep it up the work you do is incredible, blows my mind actually 🤣🤣🤣
you need to have a bracket making contest with project binky because i KNOW you watch that :)
It's one of the few automotive channels I do watch.
Misses this channel ... and couple of episodes ... strangely dumbtube didn't indicate much of his videos that i saw before due to some error and also not notify me at all for years ...
James May of Canada :)
Wonder if he builds a Watch ...
This is like the space shuttle project :) The 2th longest run for car building on dumbtube was Project Binky ... 1st was your Cosmo :)
RUclips doesn't promote my videos because I upload infrequently.
@@aaroncake I see ! Thanks ! Happy April Fool lol .
Yay!
I love Cake
Keep going :-)
Aaron, get it running, on the road without protection and let it suck up the salty seeds of Canadian winter roads. There! I felt angry all day and you took the brunt. Thank you, Aaron, I don't really want your car salt dipped, I just needed to off load.
Oh no, the car will never see the winter. Actually first thing I will do after getting it driveable, have tuned it, and all debugged is to have it fully oil sprayed. Can't be too careful. The only car of mine which sees winter is made of aluminium. My next car will be stainless steel.
Missed you, Aaron! Glad you're ok & still going, so nice to hear from you.
Thank you for the video.
I hope Lynnette is ok, please tell her I said hello, and I still occasionally think of her.
Oh don't worry, I'll tell her so she'll be suitably creeped out. And I'll still be going until the car is done!
@@aaroncake Creeped out?
Why? I have nothing but good intentions. I just thought she was pretty,
that's all. Nothing to be "creeped out" about. Is she one of those
women you can't compliment? Sorry.
@@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP Did not mean that to insinuate otherwise, was just trying to be funny. I don't speak for her but knowing her as I do, I'm willing to be she's fine with the comment.

LoL this project is going to be longer than project blinky :D
I am ok with that
I use a saturn astra hydro/electric powersteering pump on my is300 drift car, works great, closer to the rack the better, if you plan on having a pump in the trunk or something, i wouldn’t suggest an electric steering column as you loose a lot of road feel, but my guess is you’re going either one of those two, keep up the great work, i know how hard it is to keep things going
That's sort of what I'm already looking at. The Volvo pumps are also very popular. There's a perfect spot to mount at the front of the car near where the intercooler water pump is already located.
@@aaroncake volvo pump is another option but i’ve heard it needs a specific can signal so speed to get 100% out of the pump, just giving power will get a max 75% flow, that’s what i’ve heard anyways, im sure you’ll figure it out
@@TalkTime4 If the CAN messages are available/documented, that might be ideal because I could then adjust pump to vehicle speed.
A week ago, I was wondering how Aaron Cake is doing... :D
i just get a hunch and most times he just posted somethihg a few days ago. last time i was three hours after it was put up.

Hope the next episode takes less than 6 months!
Definitely less than 6 months. Definitely.
@@aaroncake thanks dude. Hoping to see the engine turning and firing someday.
Hi Aaron, long time follower of your work (back to the teamfc3s forum days), and I love watching your videos, but please for safety's sake stop using a drill chuck to mill with. I think you'll find a collet makes the cut much easier and cleaner.
I was waiting for someone to point that out! Yep, if I was doing work that required more precision I would absolutely use a collet. For quick and dirty, the chuck does the job.
Hi aaron, i saw your FC in the back. would you like to show it to us in more detail? there is a short clip of it on youtube but maybe you would like to tell all about it, how you got it and how the project came to be. cheers from the Netherlands!
Just Google up "aaron cake project tina" and you'll have more than you ever want to know about that car. There are also some older videos of it down lower in my RUclips video list. It is actually the first car I ever bought when I was 19, drove it for year stock, then did some minor mods and painted it. Then decided to turbocharge the NA engine, and drove that for a year until I roasted the clutch. At which point I pulled most of the car apart and built it.
I check RUclips Subscriptions tab every day just to see if there's a new aaroncake's vid
Would be nice if RUclips still emailed out subscription notifications. But they stopped that years ago to try to force people to use the RUclips app to receive notifications. And I saw my views drop by 75% on release day.
@@aaroncake yeah it sucks, but at least I get that dopamine fix when I see a new upload haha
Keep going Aaron you rock!
Salute from Spain
"If I have time...." Wait does this project have an end date?
Of course it does! The date is: when it is done. Sometime in the future.
@@aaroncake as Doug feom SVSeeker would say : "tuesday" 😅
Nice one.just a suggestion looks like ur AC balance is way to high causing unfocused arc, hope it helps.my 2 cents
For some reason RUclips censored your comment, so I just saw it now. EconoTIG, baby! Big old transformer and no AC balance adjustments.
What do you get if you have a welder a electronic guy and a mechanic. 1976 Mazda
I love teasing you so here it goes: By the time you finish this car, the People's Republic of Canada will ban gas cars in favor of electric. But fortunately they will accept your car as a free donation to the museum of automobilism.
Haha! Well, I look forward to the day when gasoline vehicle production ends and we are all driving clean electrics powered by clean nuclear power....but I think it will be long while before gas vehicles are banned, if ever. And plus, the classics will always have an exemption.
Whatever happened to the break in that happened a few years ago?
Basically, I spent a week off work, then several other weeks of my life cleaning up and securing the shop. Follow ups with the police revealed there was no and would be no investigation. I was something I really didn't need at that point in my life.
Has it run at all yet?
Nope. No point starting the engine until the car is ready to be driven.
So many TWSS opportunities missed in this episode. lol Edit: Expected references were at the end. haha
Yeah, I know. I honestly don't know how that happened.
Aaron's arms looking bigger, been workin out bud?
Ugh, I wish. I've just gained weight. Since I bought this stupid house I haven't had time to get the exercise I used to, nor the energy. I'm actually in much worse shape than when I fabbed the intercooler the first time. Something I intend to rectify this summer.
@@aaroncake i think everyone has since the pandemic, now drop and give me 20 😅
What went bleep at 38:06?
Email notification of a message from my website.
76 isn’t the year the car was built, it’s the number of parts in the series
Would be funny if both were true.
@@aaroncake I won’t be complaining, I love this series. I cannot predict how the car will look in the end, but the quality will be superb
It took more than 31 minutes for the first true aaron joke. And still no, thats what she said. Are you ok ?
Why add an intercooler to a naturally aspirated engine?
Naturally aspirated? Did you miss the GT30R in the engine bay?
@@aaroncake I thought you were using a 6-port 13B.
6 port 13B, turbocharged. 6 port lower with functional actuators, a custom middle manifold which bolts to an FD upper manifold. Runner lengths for miles.
Chief of police of Halton Hills in 2036: «He did had a hooker body storage sign on the door for all these years but sadly nobody ever took it seriously. So many lives could have been saved. »
I got the sign from "Speedcult" in Detroit at an Autorama years ago. A recent year in the before times, I was there and we were discussing the sign as one of the employees had seen it on my video. He mentioned that they also have a "Live Storage Sign" if I want one. I looked at him square in the eye with the most indignent look I could muster and asked "Why would I want to store LIVE hookers?".
That intercooler can't weigh all that much...why not just two quick and dirty tabs off the radiator or radiator support??....those brackets you made are strong enough to hold a 70s console TV.
As Scotty once said, "It's not just the Whales, Sir, it's the water!". The intercooler itself weighs about 6 pounds, and I'd figure that at least doubles when full of water. Keep in mind that it needs to be well supported over any sort of terrain, for as long as the car will be on the road, and has to move with the engine (you'll see why next episode).
@@aaroncake forgot about water weight......that's what she said.
