Part 48: Electronic Instrument Cluster Conversion - Part 2 - My 76 Mazda RX-5 Cosmo Restoration
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 23 окт 2019
- Well it's that time again. Yes, time for another installment of my '76 Mazda Cosmo restoration. In part 48, I continue the process of converting the old mechanical instrument cluster to a well integrated modern unit while retaining most of the appearance of that crazy time we call the late 1970s. TFT screens replace rolling odometers, stepper motors replace gauge movements and useless faux gauges which were nothing more than warning lights get turned into something more useful. Lots of tiny milling, lots of tiny hardware and some delicate welding. This finishes up the mechanical work on the cluster. As I predicted, there is going to be a third installment in which I design all the electronics to make the thing work.

Need...more...content....miss ya buddy. Hope life is good for ya
Can't believe I've been watching you work on that car for 9 years......and it's still interesting!
9 years I'm getting old
I can. It's like having a box of the best chocolate known to man. And being adult enough not to gobble it up in go, rather, one piece at a time. I mean,... it is how you eat an elephant, right? :))
Common Aaron been watching for 10 years, i wanna see this baby finished
I've been doing it for 10 years and want to see it finished. Getting closer to finishing the instrument cluster and moving on.
Can't wait for the next part!
Please give us another video Aaron!
Aaron Cake: - uploads a video -
My email: aaron cake uploaded a new video
Me: instant click
Same here
That's what she said!
hahaha YUP!
Personally, I won't click it straight away. See, a Aaron Cake video is a rare, special gem, not simply to be devoured for mindless entertainment. With Aaron, I like to take my time. Usually I wait until the weekend, order in or cook something nice, and enjoy the audiovisual extravaganza with a nice drink or two.
@@Shaibuli yeah... need to get the good pants on before clicking!
Dear Aaron,I really appreciate what you are doing, I've watched almost all of your videos for couple of times.
It truly brings high value both in educational sense and in terms of humor, but please return the nice lady from creepy hot tub room!
You upload so little that I've watched this whole series over 15+ times.(I am not exaggerating)
I'd like to more often but there is only so much time in the day. Plus the instrument cluster is probably the most detailed, intricate thing I have done to the car so it is taking a LONG time. Plus the delays in getting parts caused by COVID-19. However I am making progress and so far, everything has worked.
@@aaroncake just happy to hear your well, love the videos.
All great points, and I agree with them completely. I just like the great video screens in the new cars. Your point about reliability is totally correct. Get it going and maybe get fancy later. I'm looking forward to the day that you get it on the road. Don't give up, take your time and get it right. You'll wow the car shows for years. I'll be watching.
come on Aaron, now that the world is stuck at home, we really need an episode!
I'm trying...Being silly busy setting customers up with remote access for working at home has not helped the amount of time available. Problem is that even though I will finish the last major part of the cluster tomorrow, there is a 2 week turnaround to fabricate the boards in China.
Hey man, how's it going? Did you have time to work on it again? :)
Waiting for your next video.Always enjoyed your work!
Thank you for sharing your work and projects on your website and here in youtube.
Good stuff not only are you half of the Canadian version of Bad Obsession Motorsports you are the king if fiddly stuff
Watching you work and figure things out is very relaxing.
Aaron cake you’ve helped me so much with my endless rotary questions with old posts of yours on the forums. Currently doing 4 piston caliper swap on my base model fc using your write up. You’re the man, can’t thank you enough!
I started watching your videos when I was in the shop class in high school.....that was 10 years ago. Damn I feel old
You feel old? I've been building the damn thing crossing into my 30s, and into my 40s.
@@aaroncake upload a new video Sir, so us Torontonians have something to watch during this lockdown
I'm trying. I have enough footage at this point so am editing as often as I can. The cluster footage is hard to edit since a bunch of it involves syncing multiple sources like screen captures. I can't promise when, but it will be soon.
Thanks for the update man can't wait for the next installment, keep it up!
Thanks for another segment on the heels of the last one. Looking forward to the electronics!
How does this channel not have more subs? Fantastic, knowledgeable and just awesome to watch. Can’t wait to see this classic back on the road again.
I love this content. seen all videos, more people should see this!
uploads are rare, but worth waiting for!
Thanks Aaron!
He promised a video this year. promise kept well. Thank you man!
Welcome back Aaron! Excellent work as always.
Congrats for your super cool long term project. Saw them all, "That's what she said" :)
Loved everything about this video. As always top notch work! I love your commitment to the gauges I would have been tempted to put a screen in the whole thing but it wouldn’t be as awesome as this.
You are a fabrication god! Keep up the good work my Canadian brother!
cool, another video to see progress. keep up the awesome work.
Thanks Aaron always love a video from you. Hopefully I can scoop my repu project and use some of your stuff to my advantage!
I still love seeing your work
What! New video from aaroncake! I love this day!! 👍👍👍😊 Its like opening a christmas present😊😊
Horrible effin day but seeing the notification for a video from your channel just changed it to a great day
Right now mine is sucking. Migrating someone to a new iPhone. ITunes makes me want to punch babies.
Your real time clock/counter is a really cool idea. Glad to see this car is still getting done been watching for a long time now.
Something I had been messing with for about a year. Made up of an Adruino UNO driving 300 WS2812 LEDS in 7 strings via bit banging (someone else's code I modified) which is controlled by an ESP8266 which speaks to Home Assistant via MQTT taking commands for what to display (my code). 3D printed housing with lots of tiny screws.
aaroncake impressive. Most people don’t know you from electronics but I remember your website being mentioned by big Clive of all places. But was watching the build long before that.
Electronics is actually what got me into cars. Was an electronics hobbyist since about grade 3, then in high school got seriously into it, which lead to EVs, and back to cars.
Excited to see all the screens light up
Rob Dahm: "Next of the four rotor, billet gauge cluster."
Aaron Cake: "That's what she said!"
We might not get a video every week, but when we do it's worth the wait, thumbs up! ;)
Can't rush quality, obviously.
@@aaroncake True, the Sistine Chapel wasn't done in a day. ;)
Super excited for the upcoming electronics bit. Replacing small guages and such with LCD screens is a modification I'd like to attempt in the future and there's almost no information about it! Keep up the awesome work!!!
Thank you! Take a read through the comments because some suppliers of round screens have been posted.
Thank god was having a shit week a aaron cake video instantly made it a great week. Love the engineering and thought process that goes into your work.
Glad I could help. The last few weeks for me have been rather ridiculous as well.
Can’t wait for the next episode.
It would be nice to see a update video of the rx7 and shop and what ever else you got going on at the moment.
Been thinking about doing a shop tour with a certain special guest because I realized I never really did update anyone on the shop after moving into the new place.
Greetings from Estonia!
Tnx for new video!
Wooow!! Cake's back !!
Liked! Looking forward to watching the video!!
Such a cool and unique project.
Totally forgot I got to watch this a week ahead of time. Was all excited for a back-to-back release.
Welcome back Aaron!!!
Hi been watching this from the beginning and thought at one point it wasn’t going to get finished but I’m flag to see you back on her and you plugging away at her nicely, she’s going to be one hell of a ride your going to have to hold on with both hands, keep up the great work, markUK
Oh, don't worry, I won't stop working on the thing until it is done. Took almost 10 years to build my RX-7 and that was only about half the work I've done so far on the Cosmo.
@@aaroncake hi, thanks for the reply as a lot of people don't bother to do so. Now all this electric stuff is beyond me so I find it very interesting, don't get me wrong I also like all the other stuff you do so just keep going and by the time I'm retired you should have a smart ride, and that's what she said, thanks mark UK
Merry Christmas men just cheking here if you upload something,we miss you keep going foward but dont quit
Not yet, but soon. I have all the footage I'm just now trying to get it edited. And Merry Christmas!
You should've had way more veiws and subscribers Aaron. This is just FANTASTIC!!
I probably don't swear, act like a hoon and break stuff enough to attract subscribers.
Well, I'd just like to thank you for the wonderful design, fabrication and assembly videos over the years. I would think that the Arduino or Raspberry Pi would be a great basis for the instrumentation. You can even add GPS with off the web software for free. Make your own 1/4 mile timer, etc. Thanks again.
Duuuuuuuude! I'm fiending for new vids man.
Thanks Aaron! See you next time...
Keep em coming, buddy.
Damn cutting the cluster housing for such a rare vehicle you got some balls and alot more skill than I.
This is my favorite restoration channel on YT. But i am afraid i dont live when the car is finished.😱 I am 49
Excluding any unfortunate circumstances, I think you'll be alive to see it.
@@aaroncake 😂
great work as always
Missing your videos Aaron!
Amazing work!
OMG! Aaron! This upload schedule is killing me! I can't wait to see this dash working and the car as a whole!
Well, not so much the upload schedule but the work schedule itself. The videos are fairly close to "real time" and made as the work is completed. I have less time now to work on the car than a few years ago, and there have been some delays with the dash.
Oh man! I can't wait enough for new updates... Time doesn't pass in between updates!
All I want for Easter is an Aaron Cake update.
I want my instrument cluster parts and circuit boards from China... :-)
Ohhh how'd i miss this yesterday.
Hope you doing alright Aaron, and are well. Looking forward to your upload.
Cheers from Turkiye.
Merry Christmas buddy. Look forward to the next new video. Also checking for a new one.
Merry Christmas! (Should have replied yesterday on Festivus) Something tells me that you might see a new video in the very near future.
very cool now you can almost play doom on your instrument cluster
Will have to find out if it runs Crysis.
@@aaroncake Knowing you, it's gonna play a brutal game of Pac-Man on the fuel level gauge...:D *stares in Atari*
new a.c. video hell ya time to whip out the popcorn
I noticed that you a "Arduino guy." I was given a Raspberry Pi set for Christmas and found out that all my code will run on it and it vas NTSC and HDMI ports and WIFI. That could open the door to all sorts of sexy video displays, remote control, keyboard, e etc.. I hate to give advice, but you never know when it will be helpful. I've really enjoyed watching your videos over the years.
I like the Raspberry Pi and have a number of them deployed for network monitoring and other tasks. Though honestly lately I prefer the OrangePi simply because of cost. The cost of the Raspberry Pi has been creeping up and now it is hard to justify the $60+ (Cad) for a RasPi vs the ~$15 for an OrangePi. That said, I've definitely seen some nice dashes made using a Pi. In my opinion that is best for a show car or demonstration. Having a full Linux computer means boot time issues, possible corruption of the system if there is an improper shutdown (even if running read-only), non real-time hardware access, etc. Something like a dash is best suited for a microcontroller application which is how I am going to run things.
my "aaroncake" and chill time is getting hard with these reruns, they are just too damn good, cant wait for you to be back....hell, id watch you change a lightbulb
Well i do have some shop lights that are going to need new ballasts and bulbs soon...
@@aaroncake Dude, hell yea!! I bet alot of us would like to see that, hope all is well, cheers!!
This is Christmas.
Greetings from France 🇫🇷
Was watching some Angel Motorsports video's and wondered what happened to Aarmon Cake, and the RX-5 Cosmo build. Slowly re-watching all the build to pass some time.
absolute badass!!
Patiently waiting but.....GET ON WITH IT!!!
I'm less than patiently waiting for parts and circuit boards from China. Which I ordered end of March and assumed shipped...only to receive new tracking information TODAY saying the items were just shipped. Sigh.
Watched both ads for you brother
Anxiously awaiting an new episode...
the amount of time and work put into this cluster is "mind bottling!" thats right
Cool! A new video!!
Men you are a cientific love your videos
U are back just before my birthday!!! I am too redoing the cluster like I said before with new digital and analog gauges from a 6 into one gps speedo ,intellitronix water gauge and testing a Ducati tach. Also the idiot lights are upgraded with new sockets with symbols and led illumination.
Good seen you again. PS gotta finish seen the video
Take care
Dz
Hey just finished my IP.
Just replaced the Ducati tach with a digital one and painted the cluster hosing matte black.
Next is installation process and testing.
i love seeing the 7 in the background :)
After almost 10 years since completion she needed some work. New injectors, flush the fuel system, better fuel pickup, filters, and some touch ups on the tune. Not making any more power, but easily 30% increase in fuel economy.
After years of bandsaw catching practice, you've gotten pretty good huh? Time to try out for the CFL.
You can always use the mill and spin the chuck by hand to tap holes
Every once in a while, i come check the newest comment to see if you've replied. People say Binky took long, but they've no clue on this wacky adventure. :))
When does the next one come out... im so pumped for that, cant wait!
So am I, so am I. I'm looking forward to be DONE with the cluster and moving onto other things.
@@aaroncake Atta boy Aaron! Been watching you for years bud. You are a true meticulous mechanical Master!
Very nice mod.
Aluminum magnet, that's funny!🤣🤣🤣
45:15 Star Trek Enterprise communicator ringtone in the background... More of a Next Gen fan myself haha Love it 🖖
It is the BBM notification tone on my BlackBerry.
24:15 oh thank god, he is back!
I was sorry to hear covid got u. U will always be in my dreams
In a way you are right. Because of the virus many of the parts needed for the cluster have been very delayed. I'm waiting on the controller PCBs that were supposed to have shipped in March however only shipped late April.
In the time it takes for a new Cosmo Episode to surface Devin Townsend has released 3 more amazing albums. Don't let Team Canada down!
Waiting for your next video.
So am I. Waiting for the necessary parts to arrive.
See you next year
Depends on how quickly I can design a bunch of electronics...and how quickly China can manufacture the circuit boards.
@@aaroncake Thats what she said
I did a double-take...it's Aaron Cake!
you're breathtaking =)
You're damn right.
I hope ur okay my dear .I miss ur videos. ♡
You have nice mill and good aluminium supplier, but to me it looked like great opportunity to design those brackets in CAD and 3d-print them :)
How's it going, Aaron?? I hope you're well and still working on the car. Can't wait to see the next installment!
I'm hoping sooner than later. The instrument cluster has turned out to be a highly complex project and just when I think I am close to done, I realize there is still more. And that's just the hardware.
back for my monthly re-watch
Hurry up man! There's like 10 days till Sema!
It's possible I won't make it...this year.
Patiently awaiting the dash to be finished so we can get the welder, hammers, and sheet metal back out.
Wow, kudos to the aluminum fabrication work. I wonder how easy a 3d printer would have come of use to create custom brackets?
hi Aaron nice work what you show but just a small note from a metal processor if you want to work aluminum on a lathe or milling machine or tap into it, it is best to use spirits as cooling or lubrication
Sounds like a good idea. Probably a lot less messy than oil as well. I'll give it a try!
just mentione d you in a a Fiero restoration video. Who would've thought you upload a new one.
also the next best thing of a passion project other than the Awd 4 rotor FD3S.
Hey man, any more videos coming? I miss your uploads
It's the Canadian Project Binky
....that's what she said
Not even in the same league......that's what she said
Exept i actually think project binky will someday be finished..
